❝You're my what?❞
❝My rival, duh! And because we've locked eyes, that means we gotta fight!❞
❝Seriously?! I'm a very busy man, you know!❞
❝Too busy to fight me? That's ridiculous!❞
Comet let out a groan and covered his face with his hand. He had just gotten the item he needed to go to the corruption zone, and then out of the blue this mf showed up and was barring the way! He knew that rivals were a part of every Pokemon game, but he didn't think that the tutorial quest would come to him rather than him trying to seek it out. Wait, this was a tutorial quest, right? He checked the UI to be certain, and sure enough there was a pop up explaining what was going on, as well as an...interesting prompt.
Comet huffed. ❝Killjoy.❞
❝Huh? Is the rival battle supposed to be that difficult?❞ he supposed that if it were a double battle, it would make sense to need a partner, since the catching tutorial was supposed to take place last. He wondered what was going to happen: was his location being broadcasted to other trainers nearby? Well, he supposed he could wait.
❝Are you gonna wait with me?❞
The RIVAL NPC shrugged. He supposed the AI was rather flexible with this until the next requirement was reached.

Why was there a... ping on her mini-map?
Odile looked at it curiously; she had been doing some 'inventory management' as she had put it in her mind. It was more so rearranging her Pokemon and some of the menu features, not including any actual inventory but one day she'll have some neat stuff to organize. One day. Swiping a hand, she moved her map to the front and center, where a quest marker popped up.
Her rival? Since when?
—Oh, oh! It was one of the tutorial quests, right right. She did see this on the quests tab. Well, no better time than now, right? That ping must be this Comet then. Alright! She can do this! Can't be that hard, especially with another player by her side. He wasn't even that far. New friend time! New friend time! With that little zip in her step, Odile was off.
True to her thoughts, the two weren't that far. Sticking out from the background, the ping on her minimap growing stronger. "Hey!" Odile called out, a hand shooting up in the air to wave. "Need help? I got ya! You're Comet, right?" She slid herself next to him, offering a smile. "We can take him down together."

RIVAL (NPC) was actually the one who reacted first. Maybe the game sent him a head's up that the next requirement was already ticked, and that meant he could continue on his spiel of being a pain in the ass. He pointed at the new arrival, challenging her to a battle, and meanwhile, Comet decided to go ahead and name him ASTER because if anyone could be considered a rival in his real life, it would be him. Sort of. It wasn't like he was going to notice nor care.
❝Hey, yeah, Odile, is it? This guy's being a dickwad. We should totally show him a thing or three.❞ considering that she hadn't completed the tutorial quest, he wondered if this player was super shiny new or not so new at all. Well, time would tell once they sent out their Pokemon.
❝You're being a...a jerk!❞
Comet wanted to gag. That was the most unconvincing comeback he had ever heard. He supposed that the NPCs were also limited by the profanity filter. Looking rather miffed, said AI sent out his Pokemon, ready and primed to fight. Immediately, Comet recognized right away that it was a Chimchar and a Blitzle. He pulled out the UI to check on the stats, and they were actually pretty high. If he was unlucky and they focused on Kimchi, he could get knocked out in two turns. Well, they were going to play fire with fire!
❝Do you have something for the Blitzle?❞ he asked Odile before he studied the stats once more. ❝Thing is I only really have one Pokemon, but he packs a punch! No need to worry, I can carry my own weight.❞ grabbing the Poke Ball from his belt, he chucked it in the air and let out his Cinderace, who landed on the grass with steady feet. He crossed his arms to look cool, but he was thumping his feet on the ground, unable to contain his excitement. <A real battle, Comet?> he let out a chuckle. <Finally.>

"Is he?" Odile looked at the rival, the name Aster highlighted above his head. Aster? Well, it seemed to fit him. Not like Odile had any real ideas on what to name him, and Comet was here first, so he got first dibs. Her hand reached down, clutching a Pokeball tight as a Chimchar and Blitzle was released. The zebra neighed and dug a hoof into the ground, taking a fighting stance. The Chimchar did similar, fists closed, ready to rumble.
Okay, she actually did have something for this. Good thing she traded away the Patrat.
"Oh yo, a Cinderace? Already?" A grin rose onto her lips, impressed. Looked just as cool as she thought it would be, standing before her. "H-Hey! How do you have one already?" Aster asked, clenching a fist, not unlike his Chimchar. "If you don't think you can win, we don't have to do this." Odile chimed, and Aster grimaced. It seemed like the thought of backing down of his challenge was a tad bit too much for him. "No! We are! Evolved Pokemon or not, I'm going to win!"
Well, that settled it. A good toss made Odile's Pokeball soar, and when it opened, light collected around until a Mudbray appeared. "Hm? What's going on?" She asked, moving head slowly as to observe. The two Pokemon in front of her, and the Cinderace she was next to? That told enough. Battle time.
"Chimchar, blaze it up! Blitzle, rock their world!"

Blitzle used Shock Wave! 1d50
Madge whined as the flames licked away at her own hooves, but stayed sturdy, the Shock Wave bouncing off of her like it was nothing. "Those little attacks won't phase us! Bulldoze that Chimchar over Madge!" The Mudburay neighed, before she began to first trot, picking up speed until she met with the chimp, hooves pounding the earth and shaking it all around. Its flame flickered, the monkey shaking and wobbling from the force. "Nice one!"

That grin was still on Odile's face as she turned to look at Comet, waving her hand as if to invite him to the battle. "Come on! Let's see what that Cinderace can do! I'm sure he's got some sick moves to him."

❝Sure is.❞ honestly, he was just being mean because this was meant to be the rival character, and he was trying to act tough. Of course, Comet couldn't help but feel his chest swell up with pride when she commented on his Cinderace. It was, after all, the product of frantic researching (rather than grinding, because he just used his starter currency to beef him up). He couldn't help but snicker at the RIVAL (NPC)'s reaction too, and Odile also had a good comeback. He gave a thumbs up for his support.
She then pulled out her Poke Ball to reveal what she had for the battle. ❝Woah, a Mudbray? Not bad, horse against horse.❞ He lucked out today! This battle should be a cinch, provided that the fact that he completely ignored upgrading HP wasn't going to curb stomp Kimchi before he had a chance to attack. RIVAL ASTER did have the advantage of starting first though, with flames licking the field followed by a powerful electric attack. Kimchi barely felt the flames, but the lightning that sizzled his skin did hurt.
❝You okay, Kimchi?❞
<Just peachy!> the Cinderace had certainly gotten comfortable in his new form quickly, Comet realized.
❝Awesome, take down that Chimchar with Pyro Ball!❞ his Pokemon didn't need to acknowledge - the fire rabbit immediately kicked up a pebble from the ground and juggled it with his feet - three tosses were enough to build enough flame around it for the Cinderace to have enough firepower to toss it up in the air and send it straight to the waiting opponent, who looked none too pleased that it was being targeted.

The Chimchar didn't stand a chance. He was immediately whacked away by a fiery ball almost its size, sending him to a nearby tree and leaving a large scorch mark with the fainted fire type. RIVAL ASTER was definitely shaken up by that, but even with gritted teeth, there was always a chance to take down the Cinderace before this became a sweeping victory.
❝Blitzle! Hit 'em where it hurts!❞
The electric horse let out another whine as it raised its front hooves up in the air, charging up electricity before sending it back at the party.

—Oh damn, that Chimchar never stood a chance. Odile had to feel bad. It was already a bit weakened by Madge's attack, but she was beginning to think that maybe that damage wasn't even needed. "Jeez! Bit mean don't you think?" She spoke in a light jest, still smiling, if not on the ever so slightly strained side. Yikes. The Chimchar probably didn't deserve that. But well, that was battling for you.
"Alright Madge, don't be outdone! Another Bulldoze!"
"Got it." There was not too much emotion in the Mudbray's voice, only determination as her hooves clopped against the ground, exposing the earth underneath as the Blitzle watched the fellow equine Pokemon come on over. White and black legs braced themselves for impact as Madge slammed in, making the Blitzle skid across.

The Blitzle neighed, electricity firing off from the pointed white horn, glowling a bright yellow before he swung his head, letting the Shock Wave rip.
Blitzle used Shock Wave! d50Once again, Madge just seemed to absorb the wave like air, only snorting a bit. Cinderace though... he wasn't looking so hot.
"Ha! Looks like your Cinderace is all burnt out!" Aster exclaimed, a grin on his face. He even did an air riff, simulating the sound a real guitar would make. Only really badly. "That Mudbray is next!"

Comet was keeping an eye on the UI the whole time, particularly on Kimchi's HP. He knew that there was a big chance that he would be knocked out the next turn if the Blitzle got an average roll on its attack. In truth, since he already knew it was going to result on a loss there, he wanted to withdraw his Cinderace or even step in to avoid him getting hit. There was no point in needing to knock him out if he already knew they were losing this particular match up.
But just as Comet took one step, Kimchi immediately turned around and shook his head, raising a paw to gesture that he should not move any closer. This made the trainer flinch and purse his lips, but there was a steady look in the Cinderace's eyes, like he knew what he was thinking of doing. Was this another advancement of the AI algorithm? He wondered how in such a short amount of time, this Pokemon seemed to know him quite well.
Those thoughts were quickly dispelled when the Shock Wave landed, forcing his Cinderace to his knees before he collapsed on the ground.
❝Nooo, Kimchiii!❞ Comet ran to him and cradled him in his arms, looking rather distraught. ❝You're too young to die!❞
The Cinderace groaned, clearly still conscious, <I'm not dead.>
❝You will be avenged! I will get the Avengers and you will be avenged, Kimchi!❞
❝Uh, are you done?❞
❝Can a man have a meme moment in peace?❞ he retorted, accidentally hugging his Pokemon a little too tightly, to the fire type's protest. ❝Oh, sorry.❞ he then turned to Odile. ❝I ran out of money to upgrade HP so...it's up to you now! Kick that horse's ass. Hey that reminds me of another Youtube short--❞
To the mercy of everyone else present, Kimchi quickly put his paw on his trainer's mouth.
