"Here's your dreamer stamp, sir. Have a great time at UNOVRCon, I hope you enjoy your stay!" The receptionist at the front desk of the hotel smiles at him, and he resists the urge to smile back. Usually, he's prone to small talk, ever charismatic, but today there's no more than a quick 'thank you' muttered from behind a black mask. Amber eyes fix on her for a second, warm and bright, but just like that, he turns away, tucking his phone back in the pocket of his hoodie and walking to the elevator where a stern woman awaits — not even a trace of a smile on her face.
"You should have let me do that." She reproaches, following his movements from the corner of her eye. He's too busy staring at the Stamp Album he had insisted on getting at the Hydance kiosk in the San Francisco International Airport. She sighs, pressing the button for one of the higher floors.
"Hm?... It's fine, It's not like anyone will recognise me like this."
The elevator goes up.
In part, he's right, the world is used to seeing Martín Marzán in elegant suits and ever stylish outfits, not hoodies, joggers, and baseball caps. Still, it's pretty much the most basic celebrity disguise out there. They both know this, and that's why they had agreed that he won't go to the convention dressed like that. He's not planning to go the convention at all, in fact.
"Still, if someone were to recognise you, the whole world would be going on about how you must play UNOVR."
"True. I could always say I'm here because of a niece or something, people love stuff like that."
"You don't have a niece."
"Hm. Godchild?"
"Too religious."
"The kid of a friend?"
"Not enough of a relationship, many would say it's creepy."
"And if I admit I play, people won't stop until they find my character. Ah, there really is no winning."
He sighs, dramatically, and it's then that the elevator reaches its destination. She waits for him to step off and then follows behind him.
"That's a lie, all you ever do is win."
She's right and they both know it. After all, if she weren't, he would have never managed to convince her to do all this. He had won, and now Ariel will stay at this ridiculously fancy hotel room and go to UNOVRCon for him.
That's not all, though.
She's reminded of the worst part when seeing the black garment bag that awaits her in the room.
