Verai had gone back to the Steppes. Even now, with the knowledge that Zapdos was nothing divine, was nothing that could give him absolution- The lands were familiar, and comforting. The smell of rain and ozone soothed him, every rise of metal known to him intimately. It was here, that he'd found the Prince. It was here, that he'd found himself.
It was here, that he'd found the two of them, together.
He slipped on at late hours- after the kittens had been put down, after the lights had flicked off downstairs. He managed, even, without his daughter's help, to find the way to set his status- invisible. Offline. Undetectable, save for if one physically wandered into him. But most were avoiding the Steppe for now. Maybe the raid had been enough for them, for a few months.
The Steppes held what he needed- storms and ore and heat. He plied himself at his craft, working until he was soaked through, hands raw and aching. There was a method to creation- Could he have purchased any of these things, already made? Yes. But they would not be the same, would not protect as he wanted them to, would not express what he needed them to.
So, the work was his alone- the forge and metal heated, worked by hand, strike and strike to fit it to shape. Each one imbuing a feeling, a prayer, into the hot metal.
May this protect you, Shield you from pain and torment. May this imbue you, Bite those who come far too close. I give all my strength to you.
Verai carefully folded the final edge of fabric, the parcel neatly wrapped and tied. The smaller bundle was wrapped in soft green silk, leaves and flowers swirling over the threads. The larger one was a blood red, tiger-like streaks and stripes running down the length of it. They had both, very carefully, been kept free of dirt and ash, and Verai allowed himself a weary sigh.
He stood, from where he had been kneeling, wavering a bit in place. The forge nearby was hot, the work small and delicate, leaving him bent over and focused.
Carefully, he picked from the cavern, stepping out into meager sunlight. Water was pulled from his inventory, and quickly drained. Kitten was outside, sleeping on a flat rock. As was Miyuu, thought the absol was attentive, looking out over the Steppe.
A slow breath. Another. Verai pulled up his UI, going through the options.
Set player status visible? >Yes | No
That done, Verai set the parcels neatly on the rock next to Kitten, and waited.

The wind whistled by his earâ ripped past his skinâ and threw him back down to earth. A crater. A metallic roar, screeching rails, the sound of artillery. He got up despite the pain, the sensation of it an echo â separate, alien.
A shadow loomed overhead. Wingless, smaller, covered in metal instead of plumage; it bore no resemblance â yet it was an enemy all the same. He did not remember why he was fighting yet his blood roared to continue, spurned by snippets of memory: an impalement, thundering screams, a view of the crashing sky framed by black feathers.
A notification popped into the side of his screenâ and he remembered.
âThatâs enough!â In an instant, the ground settled. Steelix froze arcing over debris, and Waffle on a ruined obelisk stopped his barrage of seed bullets. âTime to go. Get over here.â
He caught Waffle as the cat leapt down, placing him on his shoulder before turning to Steelix. âShut the fuck up,â he told the behemoth, who had said nothing (and had done nothing wrong in his life, ever), but was staring all too knowingly. Steelix narrowly crushed him with his tail in an attempt to pet him before he was returned to his ball.
Kazuki made his way up the path, already knowing the destination by heart.
It had been a while. Whether it was because of Veraiâs other obligations or Kazukiâs shifting schedule or both, the sight of his silhouette at the mouth of the cave felt like coming home. A grin pulled at Kazukiâs lips and his strides grew longer, so fixed on his target that he paid Miyuu no mind. Waffle hopped off his shoulder, predictably returning to Kitten.
âWaiting for someone?â Kazuki purred, slipping his hand around Verai and leaning in, only to pause at the sight of the distracting packages, the silky green one already being chewed and pawed at by Waffle. âThe hell are those?â
<Mmf mrrup!> Waffle chirped in agreement.

Verai took a slow, deep breath, letting the smells of the Steppe rejuvinate him. It was only an instant, and Miyuu was scraping her claws against the stone, a low growl sounding in her throat, causing Verai to straighten a bit, eyes opening. "Mm. Thank you, Miyuu." He hummed, listening to the crunch of grass move closer.
He heard Waffle jump down, little pawsteps on the rock, and then Kazuki's hand was on him, grip winding around him and pulling him close. Verai felt a calm wash over him, a familiar relief in the puff of Kazuki's breath against his skin.
But Kaz pulled away, leaving Verai to catch his tongue between his teeth, and try to remember why he'd wanted the other man to come at all. "Why don't you look and see?" He said, offering nothing, and leaning back against the stone, eyes sliding closed again.
The bundle that Waffle was playing with was falling apart, loose knot untangling easily, revealing the flash and gleam of metal. It was a close replica of Kitten's own armor, though with a greater soft padding underneath to better suit the longhaired kitten. There were delicate swirling vines and leaves etched into the metal, gemstones a deep, rich emerald.

Kazuki perked up, like a dog who just heard the treat bag. âA present?â
<A PRâ!> The excited shriek was cut as Waffle remembered Kitten napping nearby. <A presentâŚ!> he says, excitedly whispering instead. He bent down to nudge the armor onto him and managed to get it to about half-way, backwards, before he turned to his trainer. <Pawzuki, I donât have thumbs!>
âRelax, youâre gonna kick it off.â Bending down, Kazuki began fitting it on the tiny cat. The padding helped fill out Waffleâs shape, reinforced his tiny frame and looked badass to boot. Waffle puffed out his chest, gleaming under the sunlight in swooping filigree and emeralds rich in luster.
âThatâs not too bad. You actually look like a warrior now.â Kazuki chuckled, sitting cross-legged as his sprigatito began modelling on the flat stone. Itâs a definite improvement from the haphazard armor they wore during the raid. He turned his head to the remaining package, grinning at Verai before grabbing it and peeling past the vibrant red tiger stripes.
He already had an inkling, but seeing it under the light was something else entirely.
Kazuki stood back up. âShit, seriously?â He was still ecstatic, though disbelief lined the furrow of his brows as he regarded the armorâhe has never seen anything like it in the game, everything carved with a precise hand. He doesnât have to put it on to know it will be a perfect fit.
He turned to Verai. âMind showing me how to put it on?â he asked, eyes shining with intent. âLast time I wore one of these, it got fucking obliterated, so clearly I didnât know how.â

Verai laughed softly, listening to Waffle try (and only moderately succeed) at putting his armor on. But Kazuki was quick to help, getting the sprigatito all set up. Kitten stirred, finally, yawning widely- <WHOAH!!!! Waffle!! You look so cool!!!!> She crowed, running circles around him.
Ver could hear the excitement in Kazukiâs voice, a smile on his face. âItâs for you.â He confirmed, a bit of pride rising in him. This was something⌠he had done. He had made this, and made it well. For Kazuki. âHm? AlrightâŚâ He didnât need sight to hear the tone in Kazukiâs voice.
He moved over, hand skimming over the pieces of armor, kneeling down before Kazuki. âYou can put most of this on yourself, but-â He paused a moment, to be sure he had the right one, reaching to close one of the armor pieces over Kazukiâs calf. âGreaves first- make sure they donât catch on your pants, and buckled securely.â He repeated the process for Kazukiâs other leg. âThen, cuisse- theyâre meant to tie into the bottom of the shirt, but youâre not wearing one, and they donât⌠do that here, regardless.â He said, maybe grousing a bit, the armor simply⌠settling where it was meant to be.
Verai stood, hands then finding Kazukiâs hip. Maille, hooked to a belt-â His voice trailed off, hands lingering. âAnd finish with the vambraces..â

Waffle pinked with pride, smiling so hard it threatened to pop off his face. Kitten called him cool! <Iâm a warrior now! A warrior and a cat!> His eyes shined. <A warrior cat.> Letting out a ferocious âmyu!â he launched, pouncing the spinning Kitten off the platform and into the grass in his excitement.
He was not the only one preening like a cat who got the cream.
Despite being undeserving of it and not needing it in the slightest, Kazuki was spoiled rotten by Verai, and this was a prime example.
Kazuki leaned back, resting his palms on the stone platform as he watched Verai kneel by his feet. He hummed as Verai felt about for the right piece of armor, in absolutely no rush whatsoever as he happily offering his legs to the demo. He was also paying close attentionâ though Veraiâs words appeared to be going from one ear out the other for the most part.
He chuckled as the videogame logic bristled what was clearly Veraiâs special little interest. âYeah, I didnât wear an undershirt during the raid either. Game armor wonât chafe, but Iâm still fucked if it gets too cold.â
It still felt strange; he spent the game exposed and uncaring about it for so long that he wasnât sure if the armor was supposed to feel this heavy, but it was a comforting weight. Encompassing.
Hands settled heavy on his hips and the smile on Kazukiâs face stretched wide. âThat all?â His leg slid behind Veraiâs, locking him as his hand held the vambrace by his hip. He tilted his chin up to observe the look on his face. âSure you didnât miss a step, Ver?â

Kitten yelped, shriek-laughing as she was tackled into the grass, instantly wrestling with Waffle. <Noooooo! I'm gonna get you!!!!> She batted at his face, lunging forward to tug on his ear, metal clanking as she did so. <Thubmit!!!! Mor elsh!!!!>
Verai assumed Kazuki was distracted- he held all of Kaz's focus, but that wasn't the same as listening. Proven when Kaz pulled him closer, hooking their legs together- purring as he implied Verai forgot something.
"Did I?" He murmured, lips moving as he went over his work- Kaz needed no breastplate or pauldrons, and certainly not a helmet. "... ah. Is it your sword you're worried about, Kazuki?" He asked, tease pulling at his lips. "I've not forgotten." He reached for Kazuki's hands, sliding on the vambraces-
And then reached towards the cavern, expectant. And it was not Ya'ath who drifted forth, but a single Honedge, eye bright and crystalline- floating not to press grip to Verai's hand, but to lay flat in Kazuki's palms, quiet and expectant.

Kazuki snorted at the innuendo. âYeah, sure, my sword. Glad you got a handle on that.â Hands slid across the metal of his vambraces, Kazuki leaning up toâ
âbe met with a sword.
He drew back, blinking as the Honedge obediently floated itself into his hand. âWhatâ you actually got me a sword?! My birthday isnât until March!â Right, it was like the dual swords Verai often wieldedâ a younger version.
The Honedge didnât react as he took hold of it, its single eye gazing blankly forwards. As his hands closed around its hilt, the ribbon moved to wrap around his wrist. The Honedgeâs eye slowly shut.
âIâm amazed.â It weighed perfectly. He lifted it with no issue. âAfter all Iâve done, all the shit youâve seen me pullââ
The blade was turned to Veraiâs throat. âAnd youâd just hand me a weapon,â Kazuki laughed, grinning sharp and wide.
His other hand moved to take Veraiâs shoulder. âYouâre ridiculous.â He pulled to close their distance, stopping a breath away, in soft and quiet wordsââThank you.â
Behind them, screaming in delight, Waffle and Kitten wrestling for dominance. <Never!!!!> he roared, trying to fight for his earâs freedom. Through the dim light, the pervading scent of storm, the clearing in the Steppe was peacefulâ the air filled with laughter as Kazuki kissed the man who continued to give and give, more than he ever needed to.
