OUT OF THE GAME cw: vague mentions of child neglect, road accident, physical injury
Jack grew up in Essex in the U.K. within the shadow of his perfect older brother. Never able to live up to the high standard that his brother had set before him, he quickly took to acting out in every way imaginable, from screaming to throwing to punching to smashing to whatever he could come up with to get some form of attention from his parents. They persevered until he was sixteen years old and then kicked him from the house the first moment that they could do so.
Surprised by the sudden ejection and with no better plan of action, Jack travelled to Italy with the help of some school friends to reconnect with his mother’s side of the family, the Riccis, who he had been close to in his youth thanks to frequent vacations to visit them. His aunt took him in, no questions asked, and Jack did his best to adapt to his rather sharp change in circumstance.
Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and Jack maintained his troublesome nature and desire for attention. With no friend group established all the way out here, he found himself drawn towards the sort of dangerous peers he would have associated with back home, eager to get involved with their late night drinking and general disregard for the rules. One stupid stunt led to another, and within only a few months of moving out to Naples, Jack’s recklessness had him involved in a road accident where he was thrown from the back of a new friend’s motor scooter.
It left him with an injury to his spine that affected his ability to use his legs. He still had feeling right the way down to his toes and could slowly move his muscles with a lot of concentration, and the doctors were hopeful that he would be able to regain a good amount of mobility… but it would be a very slow and difficult process. Months of hard work and effort and he might be able to hobble again. And hard work had never been Jack’s forte.
Needless to say, it was a lot to cope with, and Jack had never had particularly strong coping mechanisms in general. He had lost the life he had grown up in and felt as though his chance at a fresh start had been snatched away from him before it could even begin, and the only thing that he could think to do in response to it was give up. He had no real friends all the way out here besides his family (with his new allies quickly disappearing after the accident), no clubs or groups or social hobbies to fall back onto, and he was barely able to leave the house now, so it was easy to sink into a gloomy depression and to see no light at the end of the tunnel.
It was a cousin of his who brought over the Nintendo WorldScreen. He’d gotten it for Christmas the year before but had gotten bored with it quickly and thought it might cheer Jack up. Jack had very little experience with any sort of video games, but he humoured his cousin and let him teach him all the basics of VR. Surprisingly, he found it quite entertaining, especially the new Pokemon game that he was introduced to as well, and happily kept the console when his cousin left it with him.
Already feeling cut off from the outside world with the limitations of his injury and finding no motivation to try and improve that situation, he found himself quickly falling into the virtual world of UNOVR. It could offer him the fresh start the he felt robbed of in the real world after all, plus he could walk again without having to put in any effort, so why not pour his whole self into this alternate reality now instead? What could possibly be wrong with that?
| INSIDE THE GAME Nero comes across as your classic emo-styled edgelord. On first interacting with the in-game persona, one might assume the player behind it is some thirteen year old kid - and that’s kind of the point. Jack is desperately trying to claw his way back to the golden days of his youth, throwing away the maturity he’s been forced to adopt as the real world has shoved adult problems onto him far too quickly for his liking.
In general then, Nero will come across as sarcastic, grumpy, and apparently far too cool for the likes of you. He likes to talk as though he’s some sort of dangerous rebel with a dark past, despite his actions showing very little evidence to back that up, and his story falling apart quickly if you try to press him on it. He can be snappy and irritable and not always good with first impressions, though he’s never down right cruel. He often shows flairs of temper, though any aggression or violence that might come from those is always aimed at nearby furniture or structures - he’ll punch a wall in frustration but never anything that could feel it.
One noticeable quirk of Nero is that he seems particularly active at any given opportunity. He will run, jump, climb, and more at the smallest provocation, eager to be moving constantly, and often in particularly athletic ways. When in the company of others, he’ll do his best to act as ordinary as possible, but if someone happens to see him alone, they’re likely to notice this constant movement. With Jack currently housebound by his own condition, it’s easy to see why such energy and the lack of any obvious limitations is greatly appealing to him.
Jack’s inexperience with these sorts of video games does shine through occasionally though, and for all of Nero’s cocky confidence, there are obvious moments of him struggling. He’ll never ask for help if he can avoid it, and tends to get offended at people who offer it anyway, but it’s not uncommon to see him frozen in place or staring off into the distance for a significant period of time while his player tries to figure out what to do. At first, it can make him appear broody and even more like some mysterious loner - but on closer inspection, it’s clear that it’s just him being uncertain about the game. | FACE CLAIMS IRL CHARACTER
