#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png The Artist Corner was an elaborate trap and he was a helpless fly in its maw. But he would not fall victim to its wiles (again). Today he had an objective: obtain the PAINTER stamp from the kiosk and make a break for it before any crane games snatched his wallet.
But he found himself here now, standing by a booth. His eyes were caught on the collage posted outside, a conga line of meticulously-applied ink on skin.
He rolled his lips inward, some voice in the back of his said (sounding suspiciously like his mother) saying a very stern NO.
He moved to turn, and the voice shifted, sounding younger, male, and mocking.
Course you wouldn’t, you fucking chicken.
And he made a swift ball-jointed pivot, heading straight in and asking the artist in charge:
“Could I get a tattoo?”

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg If you want to find the place where geek culture and tattoos enthusiasts meet, look no further than Oz and his collection of elaborate tattoos with discrete references to his favourite franchises — a veritable gallery of proof on his skin. Gamers love tattoos, and so, a tattoo booth at the first convention thrown by an extremely popular Pokémon VR game? Profitable as fuck. Let me tell you, Oz sure is glad that he took his friend's offer to come help with the booth, even if he had to pay for his plane tickets — mortgage for the next few months is covered, to say the least. Now, here he is, having just finished cleaning up his station after his last tattoo. He takes a seat at what's meant to be a front desk, fiddling with a design on his iPad's Procreate app while waiting for his next potential customer to arrive. He does not expect it to be someone he actually recognises, however. "Yo, it's you! The kid from the parkour game." He laughs, greeting Saint with a smile. What had he called him back then? "Birdie! That's the one... 'Course you can get a tattoo. What do you have in mind?"

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png Angelo blinks, surprised to be recognized—kind of.
“Birdie?” Now that did ring a quiet bell, but he still couldn’t pinpoint them meeting. He mentioned the parkour game—Midas Rush? “Sorry, I couldn’t really pay attention to the other players.” He gave a tight smile. “Too busy trying not to die?”
The stranger seemed quite friendly, though, happy to offer a tattoo. It was a little intimidating. The guy was cool. Tattoo-artist-makes-manbuns-work-chainsmoker-voice cool. If this wasn’t already a Pokémon event, Angelo would feel like a fish out of water. He distracted himself with the designs on the wall.
“I don’t really—have much of an idea. I’ve just always wanted one.” He frowned. “I can’t have one that’s too obvious, though.” A voice in his head mocked him. Why not? Only doctors need to cover up their tattoos. It sounded like his own.
He kept pushing, knowing if he stopped to hesitate, he’d chicken out. “Maybe on my back? I like how the geometric ones look.”

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg "Game sure was a rush, eh?" Oz chuckles, the oh so stereotypically Canadian interjection escaping his lips naturally. "Lost a couple of lives myself, but man, it was a blast."
Still, his attention turns back to the matter of tattoos as soon as Birdie's does too, his gaze wandering over the designs pinned to the wall when the other speaks of his preference.
"Totally fair, a lot of people get tattoos that they can keep hidden 'cause of work and all. You could get something small and discrete... If you want something more geometric you might wanna look over here." Oz gestures towards a set of designs, deviating slightly from his usual illustrative style by experimenting with angles and lines. He has always liked that sort of stuff; doomed from the day he first got a compass set for Geometry class.
He looks at Birdie then, tilting his head slightly.
"Hm... You got any favourite Pokémon? One you vibe with more than others?"

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png Listening to the small talk, Angelo adds ‘Canadian’ to the increasingly long list of attributes substituting his name. When Mr. Canadian-tattoo-artist-makes-manbuns-work-chainsmoker-voice tells him to check out a different set of designs, he does so, and his eyes brighten at the sight of clean lines, intricate patterns, and the juxtaposition between an organic canvas and inorganic shapes.
“Pokémon?” That’s not too surprising, considering this event. A lot of the tattoos here were of the theme, but Angelo fidgets a little. “I guess my favorite would be… Primarina.” He already liked it from the games, but after playing UNOVR and getting his silly starter, he’d grown to love the Popplio line all the more.
He frowned, looking at the geometric designs on the wall. “But that might— not be such a good idea.” His face grew sour. “If I get a mermaid dog tattooed on me, my roommate will never let me hear the end of it.”

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg Realistically, this "kid" probably isn't much younger than him, but with the more they talk, the more obvious it is to Oz that they're two completely different people — different lives and different approaches towards life too. Not something particularly rare for him, but still, it makes him want to offer a word of 'wisdom' or two (if these words are actually 'wise' is debatable).
"So? Who cares what your roommate thinks?" He tells him with that smile, as if it really were as simple as that. Oz is well aware that people can often be overly concerned with how they will be judged for their tattoos, especially those who are getting their first one, and while there's nothing wrong with having those concerns, he has never been one to shy away from encouraging others. "When you get a tattoo, you do it for yourself, not for anyone else. It's your skin, your body, and your choice. Unless you're getting something that is meant to be offensive or disrespectful to people, they shouldn't get to have an opinion."
Is it really as simple as that?
Maybe, maybe not, but Oz himself knows there was a time when he too worried about people's judgements and could have benefitted from hearing those words. So, he gives them to this person whose actual name he doesn't know.
"Not sure if I have any Primarinas there, but there's a few water types. Let me know if you like any, yeah? Oh, I'm Oz, by the way."

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png The tattoo artist has no obligation towards him. They’re strangers to each other, and it would be all too easy to think of their encouragement as just another sales pitch.
But Angelo wants to believe. He’s had enough of life’s cruelty and just wants to believe that some talented stranger wants what’s best for him—even if it’s only for the ink on his skin. He doesn’t know if they’ll ever see each other again, but he wants to be grateful to him.
It wouldn’t be so bad, having this guy give him his first tattoo.
“You’re right,” he says, albeit quietly, not quite feeling it with his whole chest, but enough to push through the urge to run away. Enough not to let his fears of what Finn or anyone back at his college might think take hold.
“Ah— I’m Angelo,” he said, smiling a little. “It’s nice to meet you, Oz.”
He nods, looking through the available designs. “Doesn’t seem like there’s any Primarinas, but… this Gyarados one.” He pointed at it. The Pokémon was a common enough favorite that it had a few alternate designs—one being abstract enough to pass off as geometric.

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg "Cool."
A single word, but meant to its fullest extent, and coming in company of an approving smile and everything. Yes, it's what you'd think he says to most clients, but Oz himself is all for dragon designs — as one elaborate sleeve tattoo would make clear to anyone — and out of all Pokémon, Gyarados is just about the only one who really fits that vibe. Plus, gotta love playing with geometry and weird angles, right? It's not for him to judge his clients (even though he totally does), but in his opinion: a solid choice for a first tattoo.
"I'll prep stencils in a couple of sizes, so you can get a feel for what it'd look like and pick. Read and sign this form for me, yeah? Typical consent stuff, you know how it goes." A clipboard is offered to Angelo, along with a pen. Yes, Oz is well aware that he doesn't actually 'know how it goes' and that this is his first tattoo, but he also seems like the sort of person who has a good head on his shoulders and that can figured out that as much as tattoos are easily done, it's also a delicate procedure that is not to be taken lightly.
His attention turns to his iPad and to the stencil printer, setting up the samples, but he still calls out to Angelo:
"Let me know if you have any questions or anything about all this. Getting your first tattoo can be pretty damn intimidating, but I've always found that knowing about the process helps. Demystifying it and all that, yeah?"
Plus, 'Birdie' here sure seems like he could use a topic to take his mind off whatever else he must be thinking about.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png Damn, this guy was chill. Angelo was thankful for this, for he was a deeply unchill person. He nodded, listening to Oz’s instructions and taking the clipboard. He was a bundle of nerves walking into the shop and making this permanent impulse decision, but being around this guy had gradually melted that away.
’It’s probably why he works here,’ he thought as he read the waiver. He couldn’t even be mad; if his tattoo turned out anywhere as good as the winding dragon on Oz’s sleeve, it would be well worth it. He signed his name in a neat, swooping cursive, his decision locked in ink.
He’s trying to peek at the stencil process when Oz called out again, for questions this time, and Angelo did have one that was buzzing in his head. “Is it all getting done in one go?” The tattoo he chose didn’t seem too big, and if it was, he’s certain the artist would’ve advised otherwise, knowing it’s his first. But he’s uncertain of his pain tolerance.
There was also… “And what about maintenance?” He took out a little pocket notebook, realizing he should take this down. “I’m guessing I won’t be able to let it make contact while it’s fresh, so lying on my back, heavy clothes… but what about cleaning? Applying antibiotics?”
He frowned. “If it’s on my back, wouldn’t I need help with it?”
Who the Hell would he ask?

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg Oz's gaze is fixed on the iPad, fiddling with the sizing of the image, but it's not as if he needs to look at his latest client to be able to answer these questions that he has answered dozens of times already at this very convention:
"Ye, one session. Should take...couple of hours? Three at most? Not a big fan of rushing my work, and trust, you never wanna work with a tattoo artist who's in a rush." He shrugs, but it's simply the truth. There are tattoos that can be done quicker than others, considering size and level of detail, but worrying about how long it might take is never a good idea when it comes to any tattoo. "All the designs we brought here are small enough and simple enough for that. Usually when you have bigger one that take more sessions, you'll wanna wait at least three weeks or so between session so the tattoo can heal, and that's just not doable when you're at a con since most people come from all over the place. My studio's in Toronto too, so... yeah."
No, all that extra information wasn't needed to answer the question, but Oz likes making conversation and he especially likes making conversation about his work with people who care enough about their tattoos to ask these questions. Plus, Angelo here seems like the type who likes to know details about things. He even has a cute little notepad and everything!
Maintenance, though? Make contact while it's fresh? Antibiotics?
The sound of the stencils printing overtakes the booth, and as this happens, Oz glances back at Angelo, now squinting as if to get a better look at him.
"...You in the medical field, kid?" He asks, completely serious, and then he laughs, all seriousness gone. "Sorry, sorry. Most people just don't ask that stuff with those terms, ya know? I'll hand you a care pamphlet once we're done, go over all of it with you in case it isn't clear enough, and also link you my site where I also have all that info, no worries."
He cuts the stencils, gesturing for Angelo to take a seat so that they can begin, but as this happens, he gladly keeps explaining:
"I'll send you home with some adhesive bandage on it, so don't worry about it touching anything. Kinda like Saniderm? Medical grade stuff. You'll take that off after the first day, and from then on, you'll want to use a non-scented soap, gentle one, yeah? A few times a day is ideal since it's an open wound and you don't want it to get infected, think every three to four hours. You'll want to keep it moisturised too, so always use a non-scented cream after cleaning it. Keep it out of the sun, and things like antibiotics usually aren't needed but obviously go to a doctor if it looks like it isn't healing well, eh?"
Standard stuff, but all important to know. Oz isn't the kind of idiot who takes his tattoo aftercare lightly. While he talks, he sets a stencil up for Angelo as an example, being incredibly careful despite his ability to just go on and on and on while working. It's a learned skill, well-practiced.
"How about that size? Check it out in the mirror and let me know if you like the size and placement. We can make it a little bigger or smaller too."

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1107895957519081622/1145884362253021254/200_casual~png As Oz worked on the iPad, answering his questions without missing a beat, Angelo furiously scribbled in his little pocket notebook, diligently taking down the answers as if a scribe to the tattoo artist’s holy gospel. “Ah, no, it’s—I don’t mean to rush you. I don’t mind waiting here for as long as you need, so please take your time.” Although it was already getting late, and by the time they would be finished, the streetlights would have already been lit.
“Toronto, huh?” Angelo mumbled, taking down the session details, wondering if he’ll ever get more. One on his back seemed plenty enough. “You really flew out here. I’m glad. I mean—I wouldn’t have met you otherwise, and I think I’d be a lot more nervous if it was anyone else, so—uh.” He peered at him from behind his notebook. “Thank… you…”
Death by tattoo gun. Death by tattoo gun.
But the weird sappy awkwardness slid off Oz like water off a duck’s back, the man even making a friendly jab at Angelo’s technical ramblings. Angelo flushed, and though he was still shrinking behind his notebook, now it was to hide a smile. “I’m not, but I’m studying for it.” And it was silly, but there was the slightest bloom of pride in his chest, being mistaken for a professional he dreamed of being.
“That would help a lot, thank you.” The mention of the care pamphlets and even Oz’s site took a load off his shoulders. Having a solid reference point always did, and if the man had a site, there was a chance he could contact him again, if he ever wanted another session in some far-flung future.
He took as seat as instructed, still listening to Oz’s explanations about maintenance. It was mostly sanitation, though he mentally noted he’d have to buy some decent non-scented soap and non-scented cream. It’s not as if he’d be able to raid argent’s trove of skin care products.
Angelo brightened at the sight of the stencil, the design he had chosen now fitted and ready to be placed. Held up to his chest, he could gauge how it would look on his back, and found himself nodding.
“No, I think this is enough. Big, but still easy to cover.” It would rest between his shoulder blades nicely. And he didn’t say it aloud, but he hoped it would suit him in the end.

#s://i~imgur~com/4ChbxJs~jpg "Ha, yeah... Kinda crazy, right? My friend's a local tattoo artist and got the booth set up, but since he needed an extra hand and knows I'm kinda into gaming, he asked me if I wanted to fly down. I had just started playing UNOVR too, so it all worked out." Saying that he's "kinda into gaming" is a bit of an understatement, honestly, since games have always been a huge part of his life and thus have also influenced both his own tattoo choices and his art in general, but maybe Oz has gotten used to wording things in such a way for people who are... well, not gamers.
The conversation ends up striking a point of pride for Oz himself as well; knowing that a customer feels comfortable with him and that his attitude eases their nerves is always a great thing, and it's reassuring to hear that they value his approach to things. Anyone should be able to get a tattoo if they want to, but from what he knows, it's not rare for people who are new to all of this to feel nervous about approaching tattoo artists, so he has always aimed to be welcoming.
"Most people get back tattoos 'cause they can cover them for work and stuff, no worries. Lie down, get comfortable, and we can get started." In Oz's mind, the only rush here is finishing before closing hours, but that's easy enough. He has done this for long enough to have a relative timeframe in mind, accounting for how fast or slow he might be able to go depending on Angelo's tolerance and if he'll want to take any breaks or not.
He sets everything up while Angelo gets ready, snapping on a pair of black nitrile gloves and then preparing the ink, tattoo gun, and other implements. Once everything is done, his attention turns to the stencil, carefully placing it.
"Wanna have a final look before we get started? Since it's your first tattoo, I'll start light so you can get used to the feeling, but if at any point you need a short break or anything, just let me know, yeah? We go at your pace here."
