FREEFORM BATTLE
Kasey had done a lot, in California. They met up with Tuesday. They found Saint. But... there was still a friend they hadn't reunited with, despite him having been there the longest.
He was also the most shameful. Silvermoon's actions had gotten him- both of them- killed...
Would he even answer? They had no idea, but- but they had to try.
Hi Kazuki Silvermoon is typing...
What.... were they even supposed to say? "Come help me train?" "I'm glad you're not dead?"

For once, Kazuki was resting.
He lay under the shade of a tree in Birchwild, fishing pole propped up on the edge of a nearby river. It had been a long time since he had a fishing day. He could hear his team splash around and cause trouble with each other (Pansear was training the fire types in the art of arson; Gyarados was being hugged into submission by Steelix; the Support team losing sanity.)
The sound of a notification opened his eyes. Waffle was still asleep on him, face planted in the middle of his chest, softly snoring. He quietly reached up to open his messages, wondering if this was another hunting request from M'Foxy.
Hi Kazuki Silvermoon is typing...
He stared at the chat window, the Silvermoon is typing… that seemed to go for-fucking-ever before he got fed up and beat them to the punch:

It was several long moments before another message came through.
We were in the carraige ride together. [tangent=You spawn in AREA 1: ASPER, the forefront of a growing civilization. Your body feels strange, calibrating in sta…] Intro to Asper.[/tangent]
And then there was some wall mural ghost monster.
Silvermoon sat by the pool, knees tucked to their chest. Kintsugi was laying beside them, eys closed. Would he even show up?
Would you be willing to come to the Arena? I want to show you how much stronger I am.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmWould you be willing to help me train?
Silvermoon waved away the UI, and buried their face in their arms. Maybe they should just. Log out. And try again tomorrow.

His eyes were threatening to droop closed by the time the response came. Responses, rather. This kid—Silvermoon—yeah, that was a hell of a name, he could imagine himself making fun of it.
It’s at the mention of the ‘mural ghost monster’ that it finally clicked. “Huh. Damn,” Kazuki muttered, realizing just how long ago that was. Months. More than half a year, really—he’s amazed and a little disturbed that the kid even remembered.
Waffle yawned, stretching over his chest. <Pawzuki?>
“Hey, do you remember the kid from the cave?”
Waffle tilted his head. <Cave?> He looked down at his paws, focusing very hard. <Cave… Oh!> He grinned. <You mean the warm person who gave me my first hug?!>
Kazuki pursed his lips, staring at him. “Yeah. That one.”
The kitten began bouncing in circles on his chest. <Oh! I haven’t seen them in ages! Where are they? Can I see them? Can I get another hug? Let me at them! I’ve gotten super good!>
“At hugs.” Kazuki placed a hand on the sprigatito’s back to settle him. His eyes moved back to the chat window still filling with messages. He snorted, seeing the string of m’s and the immediate silence that followed. Right, that spineless brat—
I want to show you how much stronger I am.
Well, then.
_____
The sound of a fast travel teleport announced his arrival.
Kazuki stepped out of the light, eyes roving first over the arena—spacious; it reminded him of the underground cave of water he fought Verai in—before catching sight of the small figure hunched by the water’s edge.
<INCOMING!>
Waffle pounced off Kazuki’s shoulder, doing a fancy little flip in the air before landing in front of Silvermoon. He scampered up to them excitedly, tripping a little over the pesky vines sticking out of his coat, and heedless of the imposing Kintsugi by their side.
<It is you! Hi! Do you remember me?!> Waffle babbled, purring up a storm as his trainer sauntered over to join them.
“Well, this is familiar.” Kazuki stopped, arms crossed and eyeing them from above. He was already weighing them in his head. It didn’t seem like much had changed—save for the fancy billowing cloak and the guardian by their side. “You crying again, kid? Need another session with the cat?”
<My name is Waffle!>
Kazuki sighed. “Need another session with Waffle?”

Silvermoon took a deep breath, to try and stave off the overthinking. It wasn’t working- They’d progressed to maybe just returning the game and headset and- and- they didn’t know. Maybe do what their mom had always said, and go back to college. Just live in debit and a boring job like everyone else.
Until there was a sharp cry- Silvermoon jerked their head up, just in time for Waffle to land before them, eyes bright and smile brighter. “Ah- Sprigatito!” They gasped, reaching out to pull him into their arms. He was warm and purring, and there were a few brambles and branches in his fur, but he was soft beside.
Silvermoon looked up at Kazuki, blinking a bit. Slowly, they gathered to their feet, Waffle still in their arms. “I’m not crying.” They said, frowning at him a bit. Silvermoon looked at Waffle, and gently kissed the top of his head, letting him jump down to the ground.
“I- I want to fight you.” They said, looking unflinchingly at Kazuki. The creature at their side- whatever it was- moved to stand in line with them, dark, glowing eyes fixed on Kazuki.
<Trainers cannot refuse battles in the Arena. Isn’t that correct?> He asked, voice a low, echoing rumble.

Kazuki snickered at the rebuttal. “Small miracles.” It had been a long time since they last spoke, but the speed of their response was a little refreshing. Perhaps this would be different after all.
Waffle purred louder as Silvermoon kissed his head, ears folding down for a second before he’s released. He shook out his coat and hopped back to his trainer, trying to weave together the man’s ankles. One scoop under his belly lifted him back into Kazuki’s arms.
“Who said anything about refusing?” He chuckled. “You said you got stronger. I’m here to see you prove it.”
Waffle was placed on an elevated jut of stone, right under a nice spot of light peeking in from the pockmarked ceiling. With the cat settled, Kazuki turned back to Silvermoon, taking long, confident strides.
“Fighting weaklings is a waste of time and an insult, but that’s a mean-looking beast you got. I’m guessing that’s what you’ll use.” Despite how long he’s been playing, it’s the first time he’s seen a creature like this. It looked like something that belonged in Ostellia—an otherworldly hodgepodge. It looked like it would hit hard.
"Come at me!" Kazuki slapped his chest and grinned. “Hit me with your best shot.” He stood under the arena’s archaic canopy, at home even in such a small platform, at home even in the gloom. After so long, his skin was singing for it—the fight and spectacle you can only experience in the arena of your dreams.
(And if it was a little off-tune, he’d just have to make it a quick song.)

Kazuki, despite everything he did say, wasn’t rude. He agreed to fight, and was even letting them have the first blow. Silvermoon nodded, taking further steps back, closer to Waffle’s little platform. Kintsugi positioned himself fairly to Kazuki, eyes bright, claws itching eagerly at the ground.
<Kazuki... Silvermoon has spoken very highly of you. I hope it's something you live up to.> Kintsugi said, dipping his head respectfully.
Greeting given, he bolted forward, mismatched feet gripping the ground easily, slamming his bulk into Kazuki’s chest, scarcely giving him a chance to breathe before rearing back to slam into him again.
“Good job, Kintsugi.” Silvermoon called, watching the fight a bit anxiously. They were worried- both for Kintsugi, but also for Kazuki. Hopefully neither would get too hurt…

Waffle began hopping excitedly as Silvermoon drew closer to his platform. <Hi!> he mewled. <I’m not fighting today, so I’m gonna be… the referee! Welcome to the show, have a seat, friend!> There were no seats, and a good chunk of the floor was submerged in water.
<Now onto the match!>
Kazuki was shaking himself out, psyching himself up. It had been so, so fucking long since he fought in the arena. Even just being here invigorated him like nothing else.
Just a quick fight. Just a little bit more.
“Did they?” he snickered. “Not what I’d expect from someone who was scared shitless of me, but I’m touched.” He punched his palm, fire burning in his eyes at the offered challenge. “Now let’s ditch the flattery and get to the assault and battery.”
WHAM! The collision was instant, Kazuki barely having time to plant his feet before Kintsugi rammed its bulky helmet squarely in his chest. The vibrations racked his sternum, spreading outward and knocking him back.
The second hit landed, and Kazuki slammed his palms down to grab Kintsugi by the horns. The beast was his height and a hefty chunk of pounds more than his weight; it was like trying to stop a bull covered in armor with his bare hands. The jagged edges of Kintsugi’s helmet bit into his skin, and Kazuki grinned wide.
“Not bad, that hurt like hell! Let’s see what else you can do.”
<Two direct hits from Kintsugi! OOF, right in the heart!> Waffle’s voice bounced off the enclosed walls. <And now Pawzuki is pulling him into a hug!>
Kazuki was pulling Kintsugi head under his arm, body pulsing faintly with FIGHTING SPIRIT, intending to crush him against the ground in a SUBMISSION.

Silvermoon watched the fight anxiously. It wasn’t that they didn’t trust Kintsugi- they did, they trusted him with everything they had. It just-
Kazuki was monstrous, violent and malevolent. What if he didn’t know enough restraint? What if, what if, what if.
They reached, and gently picked up Waffle, holding him gently to their chest, even as Kazuki grappled with Kintsugi, crushing him.
Kintsugi hissed, a soft, muffled noise, green eyes flicking over the Fighter. <You're very talkative.> He observed, struggling just enough to keep air in his lungs. <Are you that confident? Or insecure?>
He took a breath, magenta light shimmering out of him- before it wrapped around Kazuki, fixing around his chest and limbs, imprisoning him securely. Kintsugi sucked in a deep breath, backing up a few steps to face Kazuki head on, head lowering.
<Silvermoon considers you a friend- Are you worthy of such a title?>

Despite concentrating on the task of crushing his opponent like a walnut, Kazuki laughed at the verbal jabs, Kintsugi’s crown cutting him as his chest stuttered. “Could say the same thing to you,” he hissed, flexing to shatter the beast’s armor faster.
He built his own prison then, as a bright light shimmered from the hodgepodge shell and chained him in place. Kazuki cursed, struggling on instinct, but the IMPRISON kept his arms fastened to his chest. Kintsugi simply waltzed out of his grip, but it’s not until he heard what it had to say that he stopped trying to gnaw through psychic energy like a feral animal.
“Have they ever told you that you’re full of yourself?” Kazuki chuckled, dripping venom. “Talking about how I should be honored and worthy when I never fucking asked anything from the brat.” His tongue flicked over his teeth like a flint. “You’ll give them a heart attack putting them on a pedestal that high.”
The sound of Waffle’s voice was cut as he’s plucked off the Pride Rock and held like a child’s beloved stuffed toy. <Oof—Kintsugi has escaped the hug—but now I’m in one!> An ambush from behind, how dastardly! <I will not be defeated! Take this!> At last, it was time to get his revenge. Waffle revved the motors to full power, purring up a storm. <Whoa! Pawzuki can breathe fire?!>
The FLAMETHROWER seared the inner lining of Kazuki’s throat, unbelievable heat in his mouth as he blasted flame at Kintsugi.

Kintsugi watched Kazuki, eyes bright from under his helm. He paused to consider the words. Was he putting too much on Silvermoon?
But his musings did not distract enough from the flick of spark in Kazuki’s mouth, Kintsugi springing away, doe-like, from the intense blaze. <If you think what I’m saying is undue, you’re sorely mistaken. I have been with Silvermoon since my birth- I know their character, and what they’re capable of. It is incredible feats, of both strength and kindness. I recognize the value in their friendship. I’m grateful it’s been bestowed to me.>
He closed his eyes, energy forming at the tip of his crest, swelling and splitting into three- eyes blazing open as each beam struck at Kazuki, flame and frost and lightning alike.
Silvermoon just held Waffle, squeezing him tighter as he started to purr. It helped a little, but… “Waffle… what makes a trainer ‘good’?”

The flames subsided, Kazuki coughing, burping smoke. “Ha, shit— really? Never would have known.” His tongue swiped over his ash-stained teeth, watching Kintsugi prance about, still singing Silvermoon’s praise. It came as no surprise. Most pokemon were smitten with their trainers; they were built to be.
Most of them.
The elemental beams struck, a cascade of sensation, synapses firing to connect input with memory: his skin burning, bursting into boils that were slathered in subzero ice, sparks jammed into his bloodstream and seizing him.
His mouth pulled further upward, eyes open to it all.
This is what makes this game worth it: the fact he could feel this, and still be alive.
Waffle stopped purring, peeping open his pink irises at Silvermoon’s question. <Mmm, I dunno!> he chirped, ears brushing their sleeve as he tilted his head. <I’ve only had one trainer!>
His eyes returned to the battle. <But um, I think it’s good when trainers give us hugs. And treats!>
From his eyes reflected a scene: The barrage subsiding to the charred silhouette of Kazuki, rising from where his feet were planted, body torn and seared and battered— and smiling.
<I think it’s also good when they try.>
Kazuki leaped, leaving snow and smoke in his wake, his hands clasped together tight as prayer, high over his head—
<When they try very, very hard!>
The ash smeared over his skin hadn’t left a single grain behind— clinging to him— embracing where his injuries patched screaming sinew to indestructible bone— a living patchwork that spilled from his palms in shadow sparks as he hammered his fists into Kintsugi’s skull.
