The stars twinkled above in the night sky, endless like the grains of sand beneath her feet. It was quite simply awe-inspiring. And then her gaze would drift over to some of the apartment buildings blocking her view, and frown a bit.
It was so easy to forget that this was a place that humans had long since abandoned, or been forced to leave. She didn't quite know the plot of UNOVR, not super well anyways. But she did know that Mom had encouraged her to travel with her siblings, so that's what she did.
But standing here, in the vastness of the world, it was hard not to feel a bit overwhelmed. Dangers lurked around every corner, just waiting for someone to make some mistake. And yet, she couldn't help but want to explore.
But if she was going to explore, to scan the skyline and all of its stars the best she could, she'd need to climb to the top of the tallest apartment building nearby. Steeling her nerves, she carefully walked across the sand, moving right up to the closest building. It looked almost like the desert sands were so deep, they were standing at several floors higher, as the entrance was nowhere in sight. But some broken windows on a balcony just a foot above her stood out as a possible way inside.
Leaping upwards, Ruby gripped the edge of the concrete balcony, only for it to suddenly collapse under her weight.
"Ahh!" Ruby suddenly screamed out loudly, collapsing into a mess of rubble, dust, and sand. She coughed immediately, trying to wipe the sand from her eyes as she was now coated in it.
"Oh, great." She sighed, trying her best to brush it all off, but it was notably very fine dust. "This is the only pair of good clothes I brought with me! I should have asked Mom to get me a suitcase or something."

Two strangers, two miscalculations being made at almost exactly the same moment...
Oz's goes a little like this:
"Fuck, it's late." Yes, it's late. 'A sky full of stars and a desert that's too damn cold compared to what you'd expect from a desert' kind of late (got to love how immersive deep dive VR can be, right? It better not convince his brain that he's catching a fake cold or something). Oz had known is late, because like many Oz is well aware that the Hydance headquarters are in San Francisco, but he had felt like playing UNOVR and had (incorrectly) assumed that maybe some area in the new region would go by a different time zone or something.
Nope, they don't. He hasn't been playing the game for long enough, clearly. Since, when he had logged back in at the edge of the Dune District area that he had planned on exploring, he had found himself with only the light of the stars to illuminate his surroundings. At least there's a ton of them. Much more than what he can see with Toronto's endless light pollution. So, that's something?
<'Yo! Oz! I thought we were going sandboarding!'> Before he can even take a moment to appreciate the stars above, something below pipes up, demanding his attention — the small Piplup that accompanies him. He holds the makeshift board Oz had come up with earlier, barely managing to hold it up with his tiny Piplup flippers.
"Who taught you to be so damn sassy, eh?" He had, he knows as much, and maybe that's why he takes the board and puts it on the sand. "Fine, fine, let's give it a shot. Jump on."
Excited as they both might be by the prospect of surfing through dunes, they don't manage to get very far. Down one small dune and then the sight of something falling catches Oz's eye. There's a pile of rubble and everything... Was that another player?
Still on the board and with his Piplup standing right at the front, he goes to check it out, calling out to the stranger:
"Yo! You okay?"

Ruby was not expecting another player out here, and the sound of someone else had her quite literally jump. She kicked some rubble aside, before climbing up to get a bit of a better view in the darkness of night.
Sure enough, there was someone over there with a pretty cute penguin looking Pokemon on a board. That certainly looked like a fun time! Far more than falling down and getting covered in sand.
Gross, she could taste the sand still in her mouth. And there wasn't any easy way to get it out with her hands still covered in it.
"Bluh, yeah, I'm okay!" She continued to try and dust off her clothes, only proving how futile it was. "Just- ugh, I only brought one pair of clothes. That was a total mistake. And it's not like I can just go back home to Mom's house to get it washed and take a warm bath." Could she make her way to the harbor and clean up? That would be quite the trek.
She spit some sand out feeling incredibly gross about the whole feeling, shuddering. "I was just trying to climb inside. I really wanted to get on the roof to see the stars better. Having more fun than me, I hope? I definitely wouldn't trust the inside of these buildings. That balcony literally collapsed as I just tried to grab on it!"

Okay, so, not gonna lie, the whole comment about having only one pair of clothes makes this girl sound very... NPC-ish. But, like, that's not possible, right? From everything Oz had read about Ostellia (mostly in r/UNOVR), the whole point of it is that it's kind of an abandoned and forgotten city, so this has to be another player...
Maybe she's new to gaming or something.
"Oh... You don't have any other clothes in your inventory?" He mentions in passing, but then again, it's not like he has a very full inventory either. He had gotten another outfit when unlocking that one title, he knows that, but honestly, it doesn't really fit the whole aesthetic he had designed for this avatar.
He looks up towards the building next to them, although it's not like he can see much beyond dark silhouettes.
"Damn, yeah, climbing something like that is hard to do in the dark." Coincidentally, his parkour-loving self has quite a lot of experience with that sort of thing, but to do it in the middle of the night? That's a whole other story. "We were doing some sandboarding, which... is also kinda hard to do in the dark. Maybe you could—"
<'Oz! Oz! There's something moving over there!'> Peri interrupts, sounding nothing short of alarmed.

Oh. Right. Inventory. That magical space where things just, existed. Honestly, she rarely used it. Although, given this situation, it felt like it would have been smart to do so. She had always wanted everything to feel more real, but she'd rather comfort over realism in this case.
"Ugh, no. My backpack's mostly empty. I got like, several things of water and some snacks? But I don't really know how much that will help with clean-"
She was certainly quite interested in what sandboarding was, by before she could really respond, her eyes locked onto something in the distance. She couldn't understand the Piplup's warning, but she certainly noticed something got its attention. A tower moved. A massive tower jutting out of the sands just moved, twisting.
Yelping in surprise, Ruby held out her Pokeball, trying her best to be ready for anything. She had heard of weird species being here... But this was the size of a building!
Stumbling backwards, a form quickly took shape as it raised further out of the sand. Two massive tower 'arms' like rockets, and an alien-like silhouette against the night sky, some kind of hair and dress combined.
And then it spoke, making some kind of incomprehensible sound as it seemingly attacked! Roots began ripping up through the sand as it used Ingrain, ripping up the sand as it embedded itself in the earth, sending rubble and sand flying.
"Gah! Murmur, I need you!" Ruby cried out, tossing her Pokeball and summoning the Munna, trying her best to stay out of harms way by leaping behind some rubble. "I-imprison that thing! At least try! It's huge!"
The Munna, normally quite lazy, seemingly jumped at the sight, floating a few extra inches into the air at the massive being. It's eyes shimmered as psychic energy began to attempt to form walls around the massive being, hopefully restricting its movements at least somewhat.
"You!" She would call out to Oz, still not knowing his name. "Get to cover! What the heck is that thing?!"

The year was 2022, the event was Pokémon GO Fest, Nihilego was introduced into the game to the surprise of much of the player base, and that, my friends, is how Oz himself had first learned about the wonder that are Ultra Beasts. See, he had played Pokémon games as a kid, but ever one to favour multiplayers in his adulthood, he hadn't kept up with the later generations until getting sucked into the Pokémon Go experience.
So, while he may not be particularly versed in the ins and outs of Pokémon lore (or versed at all), he sure knows what an Ultra Beast is, and when seeing the enormous silhouette in the darkness, he responds accordingly:
"Holy fucking shit."
Excuse his French. But, seriously, holy shit?! Celesteela? Here? Now? How the fuck are they supposed to fight that thing with just a Piplup and a Munna? His gamer brain moves at the speed of light: they don't really have type advantages against Celesteela (bad), but UNOVR Pokémon evolution stages have no relevance in combat other than for moveset (good), and from what he had heard wild encounters function differently from most combat, so...
"That's a Celesteela!" He shouts in response to the girl's question, quick to scoop Peri up and hide behind the rubble too, their improved sandboard being left behind to end up destroyed by the Celesteela's blast almost within seconds. "What the hell is an Ultra Beast doing here?! We gotta take it down or it's gonna knock us out. Peri, you're in."
<'What?! You want me to attack that thing? It's massive!'>
"Ya, don't worry about it, just charge. Trust." Oz tells his Pokémon, offering his best 'I'm totally not pretending not to be concerned right now' smile and a fist bump. Peri puffs his cheeks, but a flipper meets Oz's fist.
The little Piplup jumps out, giving his best battle cry before waddling over the sand towards the Celesteela and attempting to pound it. It's... kind of hilarious, were it not for how concerningly massive the Celesteela is.

"What the hell is a Celesteela?!" Ruby shouted out loud, shuddering in fear as she hid behind a broken wall to protect herself.
A sudden boom echoed across the desert as the massive Ultra Beast roared to life. Energy was building in its massive rocket-like arms as if it was going to take off. Wind and sand whirled around it like a miniature sandstorm and Ruby instinctively pulled her shirt above her mouth and nose so she wouldn't get any of it in.
"Murmur! Shut it down!"
The Munna, normally quite lazy and bored, perked up at the genuine threat, already injured. Closing its own eyes for a brief moment and floating in the small storm, it charged energy until its forehead glowed. With a sudden bolt forwards, Murmur attempted to slam its entire body into one of the Celesteela's arms with a Zen Headbutt!

"What the hell is a Celesteela?!"
A valid question, and a lore dump sure would be great and nice and helpful right about now, but Oz here has no lore to dump, so instead he mental scrambles to string together what little information someone can gather about these Pokémon by the mere act of playing Pokémon GO.
"It's an Ultra Beast! A kind of Pokémon!" Oz shouts back over the sound of... holy fuck, are those really rockets? He takes a peek at the huge Pokémon from behind the crumbling wall, his gaze fixing on the long bamboo-like arms that definitely look like they're motherfucking rockets (with nozzles, thrusters, fins, and everything else). "They're... supposed to come from another dimension or something?"
Whatever the exact lore may be, it's not what matters right now. They need to beat this thing up, and apparently Peri thinks that the best way to do it is to fire Water Gun after Water Gun. Gotta hand it to the little guy, at least he's pretty damn brave.

Ultra Beast? Other Dimensions? What kind of nonsensical lore was this? Didn't like, literal gods exist already? Why did they need to bring in multiversal stuff? Honestly, it was like every form of media these days wanted other dimensions, timelines, or whatever. Regardless of her personal confusion over the narrative, that didn't stop the threat from still being very, very real.
And yet, the massive figure didn't seem to be doing too good. The coordinated strikes from their two Pokemon had the massive beast swaying. The miniature sandstorm died down, even as a green glow appeared from it.
Ruby recognized that move! It was trying to absorb the energy of Murmur to heal itself! "Oh no you don't! Murmur, Psybeam!"
"Muuuu-" The Munna shouted out, its eyes and flower pattern on it skin glowed as a powerful bolt of psychic energy blasted from the forehead of the Munna.

Psychic energy rocks the Celesteela, making it sway back and forward aggressively. Too aggressively. Oz barely has enough time to shout a "Oh, shit! Cover your eyes!" before the huge Pokémon soundly topples over, causing an enormous cloud of sand to rise as if a dust tsunami headed directly towards them. Once the dust clears, and after a few coughs that come as a result of the overly-realistic virtual environment, Oz looks towards the Ultra Beast's fallen body, finding his Piplup alive, triumphant, and... jumping up and down on one of the huge bamboo arms of the Celesteela? <'YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT! TAKE THAT! WE WIN! SUCK IT, UGLY!'> Oz's eyebrows raise, yet despite how tense the situation had just been, he can't help but chuckle at the actions of his Pokémon. "Yo, Peri. Don't you think that's kinda overkill?" He stands, brushing dust off his intricate attire, and then, he looks at Ruby, offering her a hand in case she needs it. "You good? That was pretty intense."When his attention turns back to the Celesteela, a thought comes to mind, and a Pokéball is summoned as if out of thin air (by clicking the option in his UI). "Let's see if we can catch it." He tells Ruby then, smiling.

Ruby immediately covered her face as the massive beast toppled, collapsing into the sand. She almost couldn't believe it. Was her Munna truly that powerful? Or were they just lucky? It was hard to tell. Of course, after she finally looked up and saw the cute penguin jump up and down on its fallen body, she couldn't help but laugh for a brief second as well. It was kind of wholesome.
Meanwhile, her lazy Munna just collapsed again, slowly settling into the cool sand like it was ready for a nap.
"Yeah, yeah. You worked hard, I get it." She rolled her eyes, ready to try and clean herself up again before her new friend spoke with her. "Uh, yeah. Mostly. No chance of getting any of this sand out of my clothes or my hair anytime soon, though. I don't suppose your penguin can give me a quick shower? Heh."
However, at the idea of catching the massive towering beast, her eyes grew wide. Could that... even work? Curiousity overwhelming her caution, she grabbed an empty Pokeball from her bag, and readied it. As soon as they'd attempt to catch it, she'd toss her ball as well.
And sure enough, the towering Ultra Beast shrunk, captured just like that. She was so stunned, that she just flopped onto the dusty ground. "... Are you saying, we can use that thing in battle?"

"Ha! Sure, if that's what you want. Peri, hit our friend here with a BUBBLE BEAM — you're too trigger happy with that Water Gun, bud...Oh, I'm Oz, by the way, and this is Peri."Ozone and Very Peri, actually, but Oz is a man who always favours the use of nicknames, because speaking just a couple more syllables is a clear inconvenience, and hell, isn't it nicer to be on friendly terms with everyone he encounters? Anyway, even if he had bothered with giving Ruby that clarification, it probably would have gone unnoticed, because as soon as he tells his Pokémon to shoot its beam of bubbles towards the petite woman, the Piplup sure does, and good lord there's an ungodly amount of bubbles. Bubbles that raise in the darkness of the night and pop. Bubbles that touch the endless sands. Bubbles that completely surround Ruby. And what does Oz do while all this happens? Well, he reads.Celesteela's stats in his Pokémon inventory after the catching notification appears, to be more specific. "Ha. Looks like we can totally use Celesteela in battle." He confirms, although there's a slight frown to follow this excited statement of his. "It's apparently an invasive species, though? Looks like there's a damage or healing deduction for invasive pokémon."Honestly, a cool way to apply the whole 'alien Pokémon' lore, even if his 'WOW, BIG DAMAGE NUMBER, HELL YEAH' self tends to dislike anything that decreases said big numbers. "She's Steel and Flying type... Do you know if you can ride Pokémon in this game?"There's a dangerous idea forming in his head.

Ruby happily allowed the bubbles to swarm her body, the water soaking all the sand, making it far easier to wipe off. If only she could even see with all the different bubbles. She opened her mouth to speak back, only for a bubble to pop on her face that had her sputtering for a few seconds.
"Bluh, so many bubbles." She certainly wasn't upset though, just laughing and shaking herself off, smiling politely over at Peri the Piplup. "I'm Ruby! And that there, is Murmur." Ruby pointed over at the lazy Munna who had already settled into a nap, silently snoozing.
"Thanks for coming for the quick rescue though, I don't know what I would have done if I was alone, and-" Ruby blinked, pausing in thought as she picked up the Pokeball with the Celesteela inside, holding it carefully against her chest. "And... This sure is weird."
"... Uh, I've never seen anyone flying super high! But I know you can ride Pokemon though. Are you... You're totally thinking of using it like a rocket, aren't you?" Her eyes drift back to the Pokeball, holding it gently, as if somehow just dropping it would have the alien-like beast come back out as aggressive as ever. And yet, she couldn't help but laugh quietly. "If you can find a way to control that thing, by all means. Just be careful! I don't want to have to explain to Mom that one of my siblings got squished by falling to death." Then again, Ruby didn't really have a good idea what happened if someone 'died' in this game. She had never done it before.
Was it painful? She didn't really want to find out.
"... But then again, it would help me climb atop the buildings. Hell, it's taller than some of the buildings here!"

At that exact moment, Oz gives Ruby a smirk before giving any proper response, and that smirk might as well say it all. In fact, it may say something along the lines of: Gurl, you best believe that I'm abso-fucking-lutely thinking about using that thing as a rocket, it'd be sick!Ah, yes, it shines in his eyes: a daring idiot who thinks he has nothing to lose and is just here to have a good fucking time. Still, what follows is... surprise."Mom? Like from the running shoes tutorial? Huh... I guess it makes sense that she thinks of all of us as her kids. That's kinda cute, honestly." He chuckles, thinking back to when he and @solar had helped Mom take down all of her Halloween decor and put up Christmas decor in its place just a bit ago. He had liked the NPC quite a lot, actually. "Well, wouldn't wanna worry Mom. But, s'all good, as much as I like flying Pokémon, I've heard players can't fly." Much to his dismay, although the Aviator class still sounds incredibly appealing to him. "I was thinking more horizontal movement. Celesteela's high enough as is, just imagine how fast it can go when on its side."
Like... Podracing. Yeah! That's what all this is making him think of, especially with the sand dunes and all. He grins at Ruby when she mentions climbing. "I bet it would. If we can catch them that means we can train them like most Pokémon, right? So that should be no problem at all."If only Oz knew just how wrong he is about Ultra Beasts' ability to understand their commands, but alas, he'll soon find out...
