Verai found himself adrift. Ruined buildings rose up around him, their shapes unfamiliar and alien, decaying metal and rotting glass. The weight of it- the implications, the loss, the despair- weigh on him, filtering through the air.
They constrict you, and your fresh breath is stolen by the stale landscape. Replaced with rock dust and flakes of hot iron.
He forced himself to take in another shuddering breath- soothed by the press of a hand against his back, a solid presence among the shifting vaguities of the errant sands. Verai leaned into the touch, reaching towards Kazuki.
āWhat do you think this is?ā He murmured, not wanting to raise his voice too loudly. The Broken Sundial, the ui had whispered. Follow the Night Parade. Either it would be harmlessā¦ or a threat. More likely the latter, given the warning to upgrade his health before continuing.

Something about the air was making his skin crawl. The strange hour and the state of ruination around, he could actually deal withāKazuki was no stranger to quiet hours, and definitely no stranger to off-putting settings.
But traveling through the dunes, with the sky nothing more than a blanket of ash and the sands pooling over his ankles, the distant crash of buildings continuing to crumbleāit felt as if nothing was solid. As if everything could be blown adrift, slip through his fingers.
His hand slid over Veraiās back, curling around to pull the man closerāattaching him to his side. He would go nowhere, if he had anything to say about it. The hold worked as much to ground Verai as it was to keep Kazuki in tact.
āA trap?ā he mumbled back, head canted close. His eyes slid over to the procession unfolding before them. āLooks like a night festival. Some of them are holding offerings.ā
A massive line of strange creatures was moving across the dunes. The joyous, writhing mass followed a rhythm, each hulking step punctuated by sloshing waters and the clink of metal limbs carrying vegetationāor their own kin. They raised these in tandem to their steps. To Kazuki, they didnāt look all that different from the PokĆ©mon back in Asperādamn creatures came in all shapes and sizes. What made them different were the sounds. Nothing could be deciphered from the discordance.
āCome on, we canāt hang back.ā The quest had made its instructions clear: Join in. There was likely a limit to how far they could loiter from the line.
It wasnāt easy. The threat of being quashed was constant, Kazuki moving Verai as a bloated creature made of a single huge maw stomped over their path. The behemoth didnāt notice; it continued hobbling after the parade, the eel-like appendages protruding from its tongue dragging about a candy-colored corpse as a school of jellyfish-like beings floated around it, trilling a drowned tune.
āCan you sense them? The floaters.ā He knew Verai could see him, at least. Something about the Parasite; the corruption in general. It was reassuring, though it meant he could no longer ambush him as efficiently.

Verai pressed into the embrace, eyes closing as he walked with Kazuki. He hummed softly at the answer- still not convinced it wasnāt a trap, of some kind.
The sounds were oppressive, uncomfortable- a cacophony of things that didnāt make sense- the creak of stone, groan of water, rustle of parchment. And above it all were the cries- nothing like anything the pokemon sounded like. It grated against his ears, distorting the landscape around him.
Kazuki spoke of getting closer, and Verai resisted only an instant, making his displeasure at this known- but Kazuki was right. Join in with the Night Parade until they reach their destination. He let Kazuki lead him, having to grab onto Kazukiās arms as he was bodily staggered out of the way-
Something large stomping through the place heād been. It screamed of discordant noises, the shift of rubber and a constant, ceaseless growling and churning. Noise like rippling water, the sound of being drowned-
āI- I think so.ā He said, still keeping his voice low, turned towards Kazuki. The loud cries and soft sand were making everything fuzzy. āCan you see where weāre going?ā

Kazuki looked around. āNo. Not at this height.ā The parade was packed. Strange creatures had surrounded them despite how slowly they entered the line, as if a fresh entourage had appeared behind them. The sky above was obscured by the massive silhouettes and a canopy of jellyfish floaters.
But through that thicket came just a hint of light. Far brighter than the moon and stars. How to get close?
Kazuki continued walking them along, unable to stop as that would mean contact with the abominations behind them. He kept his grip around Verai secure, finding the idea of the things touching him untenableābut havenāt they already?
āI think I have an idea how to get us a better view.ā He didnāt trust any of these creatures except for the ones they already dealt with. āThereās one of those living buildings walking in front of us. We can climb it.ā
He clicked his tongue. āBut itās got a ton of these huge jellyfish things floating around it, and if swimming in Australiaās taught me anything, itās not to touch that shit by any means.ā The creatures almost seemed to have bodies, tentacles of different sizes swaying as they orbited around the walking edifice. Like a very pretty electric fence.
His eyes moved back to Verai, contemplating him for a moment. Even in his voice, it was clear he was grinning. āI bet I can carry you.ā

Even amongst the chaos, Kazuki was a spot of light. Verai laughed softly, letting himself lean into Kaz. āSwimming in Australia?ā He repeated. It felt like every day, he learned something new about him. Verai hadnāt ever been outside of Japan, to his knowledge- save for the one trip to the United States.
Should heā¦ try? Leave Bria and Amathi with the cats? Do as theyāve said, a thousand times, and take a vacation?
āCarry me?ā Verai said, surprised- and laughed again. āReally? You think you could?ā A wry smile played on his face. āWith all my gear? Truly?ā

āIs that a challenge?ā Kazuki huffed. āGet on my back.ā
Kazuki was strong, far stronger than average thanks to his line of work and love of fighting. Even lifting a man of his size and bulk was easy enough, but lifting with that man in full-sized armor and while scaling a building? Motherfucker had bitten off more than he could chew.
āIām going to eat these sons of bitches, I swear to the gods,ā Kazuki hissed, maneuvering just in time to evade the tendrils of a massive jellyfish, one arm clutching the brick while the other curled protectively around Verai. āGoing to make the worldās biggest mizu shingen mochi out of their heads. Chuka kurage out of their tentacles. All the fucking chili sauce!ā The manās breastplate was chewing into Kazukiās back, but he was already committed to the bit and would not allow him to switch out. So he climbed, like turtle Sisyphus up the Stakataka hill, constantly threatened by jellyfish harpies and self-destructive hubris.
At the top of the building, Kazuki went splat. He groaned, nudging Verai off his back. āNext time we do that, youāre strippingāand thatās the only ābutā Iāll take from you, understand?!ā Fresh red lines disrupted the intricate designs of his back tattoos as he got up to stretch, only to stop.
āHoly shit.ā
It was incredible. In the distance, at the far, far front of the parade, a massive structure like a shattered moon. Its light bathed the parade of creatures until they shone gold at its feet, and its backdropāa dark sky of falling stars. He never thought something so beautiful could exist in the cradle of corruption, and yet here it was.
And he was the only one who could enjoy it.
āVer, give me your hand,ā Kazuki said urgently.

Verai always liked to oblige Kazuki- Even before, it had been a good way to see what the other man was capable of, how he reacted to challenge. Which was, for the most part, throwing himself doggedly headfirst into it. So Verai merely smiled, wan, stepping up into Kazukiās grip.
He listened, carefully, as Kaz started scaling the creatures. Kazukiās heartbeat was a steady thrum, more stubborn than concerned. The creatures in the air drifted, forms too soft and malleable for him to get a good read on. But Kazuki made it, scarcely dragging them both up before collapsing, Verai gently shifting away from him. āMmh, Iāll agree- but only for the mizu shingen mochi.ā
Kazuki swore, but there was something different about it, a reverence and clarity to his voice. āKazuki?ā Verai asked, reaching towards him. āWhat is it?ā

āNeed to show you something.ā
In truth, Kazuki was pissed. His emotional range typically fell within this narrow sphere, but this time it was pure frustration. What is the point of a world where anything is possible, where you can sacrifice sight for glimpses of the future, if that world hinges its greatest gifts on what you can see?
And Verai could shut it off, of course, but he didnāt want to. Kazuki still didnāt fully understand the merit of it, but that didnāt fucking matter, because if itās what Verai wanted and it didnāt involve martyring himself for things that wouldnāt think twice of him, then he should have it a thousand times over, and damn the rest.
As it stands, however, Kazuki was at an impasse. Maybe there was a class or an ability that could let Verai see what he sees, but he didnāt have it. All he had was himself. āIām going to tell you what I see, so listen, alright?ā he grumbled, once again charging bullheadedly to his objective.
He held Veraiās hand by the wrist. āThe parade has been moving in a straight lineā¦ā How long? The climb felt like it lasted ages, and he hadnāt paid attention to anything else. The pad of his thumb traced the line of Veraiās inner wrist, feeling life pulse under calluses.
āā¦ towards a giant, bright structure on a platform. It looks likeā¦ like a moon.ā The pad of his thumb traced a circle into the palm of Veraiās hand, as if smearing ash into the lines and cracks. It would hold resemblance. He poured a speck of fire power into his fingertips to mimic its warmth. āOr maybe itās a sun. It looks like itās been shattered, and thereās bits of it at the edges missing, but itās stillāā he snorted, smiling to none but himself āāstill pretty damn amazing.ā
And his gaze moved from Veraiās palm, back to the sky. āAnd now thereās a lot of lights in the sky. You ever seen a meteor shower, Ver?ā Through the cacophony of the bustling parade, there were warbles of meteors ripping through the gloom, sending ripples of iridescent energy through the clouds.

Verai opened his mouth, about to explain for what felt the hundredth time that- while Seer was a mechanic in its own right, it was also a decision, a personal one, and that it felt wrong for him to take the benefits while eschewing the one downside that seemed to come with any of the classes.
But Kazuki didn't wait, grabbing onto his wrist- Iām going to tell you what I see, so listen, alright? And Verai could only smile, pressing closer to him. "I'm listening."
Kazuki's hand pulled away the gauntlet, thumb brushing against the exposed skin of his wrist, forcing Verai to repress the shiver that went through him. He tried to focus on what Kazuki was saying.
Focus on creatures, things he could only blearily make out, stalking across a desert. A fractured moon rose on the horizon, the edges smashed like pottery but hanging, just away from their parent. It blazed brightly, so much that Verai could almost swear he could see it.
A question- Kazuki had asked a question, voice soft and almost fond, a breathless quality to it, pointed towards the fractured moon. "I- I have, before." He had taken Bria out to the mountains, and they had watched and made wishes.
Verai swallowed, and turned towards Kazuki- maybe as if to be sure he heard over the rumble and chatter of the crowd-
"Thank you."
