OUT OF THE GAME Joyce never wanted to become a nurse, but her mother convinced her to go to school for it. It would pay well, she said. Never a dull day, she said. She'd be able to live a comfortable life and do whatever she wanted, she was told. But it turns out, the only thing Joyce wanted to do was be as far away from people as possible. She just wanted to play her music, attend every single rock and metal concert within 300 miles of her, and satisfy her hobby of making scented candles. And yet, she never had any time to do any of that. After every single day of work, she'd come home exhausted and dead, unable to do anything but zone out to listening other people's music, other people's dream. Forced to be nice all day long to idiotic patients who really needed to be told to shove it, working with "holier-than-thou" doctors who thought they knew everything, and the absolute chaos that came from working in a hospital day in and day out, Joyce tried her best to get out of the industry. She up and quit, saving up enough of a budget before dropping everything to play her music. She wanted to make it big, blaring out her heart into her tunes, screaming into the microphone and shredding her electric guitar like her legends. Except it didn't work, life wasn't like the movies. Maybe she just wasn't good at marketing herself, or maybe the world was already filled with upset angsty girls tired at the world and they didn't have room for any more. Or perhaps simply, the world just wanted to spite her even further, to force her crawling back to the desperate slog that was modern day capitalism. She hated it all. She hated pretending to be nice. She hated not being able to express herself. She hated having to deal with people. It was only when she could no longer afford groceries that she was forced to pick up a "real job" again. This time, she had found herself fairly lucky, as if fate was apologizing only barely. A relatively new company was needing nurses to handle their long-term subjects for study. VMT, or Virtual Medical Technologies, was studying applications of VR technology in the medical field. She wasn't going to question it, it paid a little worse than her last job, but the job was hella easy in comparison. She still had to work with nosy, uppity doctor folks, but she never had to deal with the public, and that was more than enough for her. It turned out, however, that VMT didn't really have the funds to afford to hire many people. She was pretty much the only nurse, which was more than content for her. No one else to complain when she smoked in the break room. She'd make sure to reapply fluids for the IVs, clean the unconscious patients, discuss any physical abnormalities with the doctors and patients that were awoken and practically anything else the doctors refused to do. It was still grueling work and she hated playing nice and polite, but she made it work. It wasn't until Hydance shut down any visual recordings of their virtual worlds that her life really changed. Beforehand, she never truly cared about VR in any capacity. It was just some dumb video game and she didn't have any interest in those. Sure, the tech was neat, but it never impacted her at all. But all of a sudden VMT was needing someone to actually go into the virtual world UNOVR to interview their long-term test subject, a psychologist by the name of Dr. Ruby Walker, PH.D. She was instructed to log into the game from another staff's account and everything changed. Joyce was in a brand new world and she could do whatever the hell she wanted. Despite still doing her job, interviewing the subject like a good nurse should, she began to volunteer for the job to check on them more and more. It was satisfying beyond satisfying. A place free from expectations. A world where she could just jam her heart out and there was absolutely nothing stopping her. Nothing anybody could say or do would stop her from doing whatever the hell she wanted, everything she could have ever wanted. She immediately began to save up every spare pound and put it towards purchasing a Worldscreen herself. And months and months later, she finally got one.

INSIDE THE GAME Nurse Joy is exactly like what Joyce would be in the real world, free from consequences. Except, of course, the End-User License Agreement and potential banning, that is. Or at least, that's what she tells herself. Nobody can tell her what to do and she'll do whatever she wants. She'll shamelessly break into places in town, spray paint all over the walls and just walk straight out the front door. What are they gonna do, call the cops? She'll just beat them up in a battle and dip. Trouble is her middle name. Joy is absolutely content to just sit somewhere and play her tunes, experimenting with music in a world where her neighbors in her tiny apartment complex can't tell her to shut up. She doesn't really know much about Pokémon, but she does have quite the affinity for any of the ones that look badass. Of course, she'll eventually learn that any of these weird critters can become badass given time. If anyone is able to play along with her jabbing insults and sarcastic banter they might find a creative soul just needing an excuse to express herself and have fun, and ultimately that's all that matters to her. The only reason she stuck with Nurse Joy as her name and doesn't look entirely goth and punk, is because she needed a solid excuse to use the same account while at work. Her bosses fell for the ploy and it's worked well enough. They don't need to know the chaos she gets up to during her down time.
