The overlay of pop-ups and maps and hints and more was slowly becoming more manageable as time went on. That was perhaps in part because Nero had lost his temper at them at one point and closed practically everything that he could without really thinking about how he would find any of them again in the future. That was a problem for future Nero, and he very rarely gave that version of him any thought. Outside of just a clearer screen though, the remaining details had started to become less distracting, had started blending in with his surroundings in a way that only games could make work. Of course it was totally normal to have a little map floating in the corner of your eye - how did we get by in the real world without something like that?
The gradually approaching normalcy of it all was helping to keep Nero calmer than he'd managed to be for most of the tutorials so far at least. This was probably why he didn't play a lot of video games: he was overly competitive but at entirely the wrong things. He wasn't obsessing over high scores or unbeatable records, but over perceptions and interactions and the social side of the virtual world. But the more natural the world around him felt - or at least, the more easily navigated it became - the less high strung he was before even coming across another person.
He was two tutorials down by now, and despite the mixed reception that he'd had to them so far, his own stubbornness meant that he would be finishing them all no matter how bad they got. So with the next marker clearly visible on his less cluttered overlay, he headed towards the area where he was supposed to meet his in game rival.
Only to, on arrival, see no-one but the annoying older player from the first tutorial stood there waiting for him.
In truth, the other player probably wasn't waiting at all, and the both of them were simply in the vicinity where the rival was due to appear, waiting for him to do so. But it was too late for logic to matter now - the narrative that Nero's mind had already constructed remained lodged in place despite of it.
"Oh you have got to be kidding me," he barked at the other player, his new 'rival' as he thought the game was telling him. "You again? For real?"

William had been doing okay so far; the second player he'd met had been a lot more pleasant than the first and he felt like he was very very slowly getting the hang of it. Or rather, at least it was no longer so overwhelming that it made him second-guess his choice of giving the game a shot. As he stood around the area marked on his map for the beginning spot for the third tutorial, he heard a familiar sound from somewhere behind him.
"O-oh, hello," he greeted sheepishly. He was willing to give the younger male the benefit of the doubt; perhaps he'd been in a sour mood already during their first encounter or he was in general socially awkward and it showed itself as unnecessary aggression and stand-offisness. Teens were often like that, so he was sure the boy would mellow out on his own as he matured. With that in mind, he would save his lectures about manners. "Are you here for the rival tutorial as well? I wonder if they're as animated as the mother character was."
As they had been talking, the sound of a guitar riff had William jump slightly, obviously startled by the sound. As he turned around to look, an NPC with the name 'Your Rival' was approaching the pair at an honestly impressive speed. William did note that the guitar didn't seem to be hooked into anything, but it was a game, he supposed. "Man finally, what took you losers so long?" the young man scoffed, clearly agitated.
A pop-up appeared in William's field of vision, prompting him to name the rival who was drumming one foot against the ground and waiting for a response. Matteo. It was the first name that popped into mind; he was pretty sure his old history teacher in college had been named Matteo as well?

Fine, yeah, okay. He could see this guy being a rival. Some patronising old man trying to claim he knew better with all his wisdom and experience? Well virtual reality was a kid's world actually, and Nero would be happy to prove that to this loser with a few devastating Pokemon battles. This guy was probably a boomer, right? Nero was entirely basing that on the fact that he'd given himself grey hair and spoke like a dad rather than an ordinary human, but that was enough evidence for him to make some sort of assumption on. That made them natural enemies of sorts, didn't it? Then yeah, sure, great, this 'Will' would be his rival in this game then.
Heh, maybe he was actually getting quite into this now.
It felt good to have such passion for something, even if that passion was currently focused on beating up an old guy's Pokemon and humiliating him. Nero had felt rather apathetic to everything recently, unable to be motivated enough to care even by hobbies that he'd previously loved. For a spark of genuine emotion to come not only this rapidly but this easily and for it to not end with him punching a wall and breaking his hand was honestly a breath of fresh air.
So much so, that even when the actual NPC appeared with guitar in tow and Nero realised his mistake, he didn't feel the same rush of embarrassed anger that had fueled him through most of the tutorials so far. Instead, he just snorted at the newcomer and decided to keep hold of his new association for the other player character all the same.
As the pop-up to name the rival showed up on his display, it didn't take him long at all to type in 'Bianco'. White vs Black, Bianco vs Nero, it was an easy choice, and yes he was quite proud of it actually. Rather than addressing the rival NPC directly, he turned to Will again to finally answer his question. "Yeah, and I'm guessing we're supposed to fight him together? How good are you at battling, old man? I wouldn't want you to slow me down." Heh, there was confidence in his jibes this time around. He really was starting to enjoy himself.

"Battling? Oh, I have never played games like this before so I cannot claim to be very good at it," William admitted sheepishly. It was honestly pretty obvious he was quite nervous about the whole battling aspect so he was perhaps a little relieved to learn that they could do it together. "But I think I equipped my pokemon as a support one, so I should be able to heal you if you don't mind battling together."
"What's taking you losers so long?" the rival barked at the pair, sending out the two pokemon he'd prepared. Some sort of fire monkey and honestly a rather normal looking baby zebra with a mohawk.
"Oh, the zebra one is very cute," William found himself saying, a small smile across his lips.
"Cute?!" the rival demanded, agitated, "it's not cute! It's strong as hell and it's gonna kick your butt so you two better get ready!"
William just sheepishly nodded. He hadn't meant to offend. Instead he let out his large headed grass type that looked aroud in slight confusion. Will felt a little bad making it fight. "Shall we then?" he asked Nero, hoping that the younger, but clearly more confident of the two would be willing to show him the ropes.

Support? Ha, who used the support class? Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast: that was the only strategy you needed. If your enemy was dead before they could respond, you'd never need to be healed anyway. But of course this old guy was going to go for something soft like the support class. Whatever, Nero could fight for the two of them.
Cyndaquil's Pokeball was pulled out from his pocket and pointed at the ground in front of him, the small fire type appearing with a chirp a moment later. It was stood opposite a... Chimchar, yeah, he remembered that one. The other one though... he definitely recognised it, but had he ever played the game that one was from or just seen some of the images from it? All the Pokemon games that he'd had a chance to play with had been hand me downs from a friend's brother who didn't play them anymore after all, so the later games had been out of his reach. Oh well, he could guess its typing from the zigzags on its body and that was all that mattered.
"Alright, orange one's fire type. You're weak to that so we take that out first," he explained to Will before turning towards the battlefield once more. With the Pokemon now out and ready to attack, their surroundings had shifted and changed, the area around them suddenly widening to create a clear 'pitch' for them to fight on. He hadn't quite noticed the change happen - but then that was probably why the tutorial took place here anyway. The surroundings had been open and clear already, so the shift to proper battlefield hadn't taken much so as not to be jarring to new players.
The rival was already shouting orders to the Pokemon on his side of the field, and the Chimchar was soon shooting an ember their way. Thankfully, it was aimed at Cyndaquil, and while he still cringed at the lick of flame, it was better than if it had been aimed elsewhere.
CHIMCHAR ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE sZB2I7D|2d20+20 Chimchar lost 20 HP
Alright, so now they were cooking! And just as a good tutorial should, the rival's actions had shown Nero would to do himself, as he basically repeated the command that he'd just heard to his own Cyndaquil. "Fast attack with Ember, Cyndaquil." The words still felt a little foreign to Nero, but his starter didn't hesitate to follow the command, shooting off two speedy blasts of flame at the opposing Pokemon in much the same way that it had just been attacked itself.
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE 2d20+15 Cyndaquil lost 20 HP
Both fire types seemed to be panting, which was... new. Sure, they'd just been hit by an attack, but that response seemed to have been more from their own attacks than from their opponents, like producing the flames had been exhausting or something. Odd... he'd have to keep an eye on that.

William, despite knowing the basic concept of Pokemon, was still shocked to see the two small fire types suddenly spit fire at each other. A part of him, a quite significant part actually, wanted to pick the Pokemon the professor had given him up and leave the violent confrontation. Maybe he wasn't quite suited for a game like this after all; making such sweet looking little creatures fight for no real reason seemed cruel and far too real for the older man.
BLITZLE ATTACKS: ELECTRIC-TYPE MOVE 1U0TMjRJ1d50 Blitzle lost 20 HP
Before William could make the decission to exit the situation, the Rival carracter had commanded his other Pokemon to attack his little green companion. Seeing sparks of electicity shoot at the little creature who let out a very small sound of pain, or at least discomfort, caused William to feel genuinly panicked for a moment. He really did not feel equipped to handle a game like this; perhaps he should have started with something with less or preferably no combat.

"Quick, heal Nero's Pokemon," William called, worried for both of their Pokemons well being, but knowing that he and his grass type could do very little about the rivals fire type at this point.. Knowing he was getting this worked up over a game made William wonder just how on earth people in charge of real animal fights could handle the feelings of anxiety and guilt. None of the Pokemon were real, and neither was the young man before them, but it all felt real enough to be down right disorientating. He really was not good at battles, but it seemed unlike he could stop here either. For now he'd just focus on trying to keep both his and the other players Pokemon heatly then.

HP AT START OF POST: Chimchar: 150-20-32 = 98/150 Cyndaquil: 150-50-20+23 = 103/150
The battle was well and truly underway, with the zebra looking thing attacking Will's Pokemon now as well. Nero was oblivious to the other man's distress of course - he'd barely looked at him in a while, and even if he had, he'd have assumed the worried look was just his natural expression. It would probably have taken Will openly breaking down in tears for Nero to notice that anything was wrong... and even then he might just ignore it out of discomfort.
His attention remained mostly focused on the battlefield then, with a quick glance in the grass-type Pokemon's direction as it healed his Cyndaquil up for him. Alright, so support was useful for other people to have then, just not for Nero to waste his own time with. It's not like he was going to have much chance to enjoy the extra hit points though, as the Chimchar opposite him on the field was soon releasing another Ember in his Cyndaquil's direction.
CHIMCHAR ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE S7qhz5Z72d20+20 Chimchar lost 20 HP
Early game battled had always been over quick from what he remembered - no set up, just a few simple hits on either side until it was over. It looked to be playing out the same here, even if the second player character and the strange double battle did complicate things a little bit. Still the HP bars floating above the Pokemon models in front of him were going down pretty rapidly - and yes, he saw it happen this time, they were going down when they performed an attack as well! Weird... That was definitely a new mechanic, right? It was something he'd have to keep an eye on anyway.
He could risk another attack for now though, with Cyndaquil's bar still two thirds full. Especially if Will's Pokemon was planning to heal again, though perhaps it was unfair to request that when it was getting damaged as well... Oh well, he'd just leave Will to make hat decision for now, and maybe snap an order... request at him next turn. "Same again Cyndaquil!"
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE 2d20+15 Cyndaquil lost 20 HP
A further chunk dropped from the fire mouse's HP, and Nero gulped at the sight of it. He might not have been quite as affected by it as Will was, but he had to admit... this was pretty intense.

Will was very quickly coming to the conclusion that he did not, at all, enjoy battles. At least not at this point; maybe if he managed to make his little friend stronger then on the long run he could feel a bit more certain of what was happening, but as things stood all it was doing was giving him extra anxiety he certainly did not need in his life. It was nerve wrecking to see the little imaginary animals take hits, especially with how realistic the heat from the flames felt whenever they were burst out. Perhaps he'd made a mistake setting the treshold thing in the beginning of the game to realistic.
BLITZLE ATTACKS: ELECTRIC-TYPE MOVE 8JD1pKju1d50 Blitzle lost 10 HP
As the zebra like Pokemon once more rushed closer to the grass type that was rather obviously trying to hide behind the fellow trainers Pokemon, maybe out of distace to battle, or perhaps to simply stick closer to heal the fire type better. A bright flash of elecrticity had William covering his eyes with his arms momenterely. It really did make him anxious, watching the health bars above the Pokemon get lower and lower. Despite the damage his snivy had taken, William thought it was a better idea to keep healing Nero's pokemon as a priority until the rivals fire type was unable to battle; it was a bigger threat to his little friend than the electric zebra.
SNIVY HEALS: 2d12+10 Snivy lost 20 HP
"Heal Nero's pokemon again," Will said; even in battle he barely raised his voice to give commands. It was really obvious he was a very mild man through and through. "I don't think I can do much attack wise, but I'll keep your Pokemons health up," he said to Nero, obviously not having an issue expressing that he was depending on the younger man and his companion for the battle.

HP AT START OF POST: Chimchar: 98-20-36 = 42/150 Cyndaquil: 103-34-20+25 = 74/150
At some point, Nero should probably have considered the health of his ally Pokemon rather than just his own. After all, if the grass one went down, there'd be no-one left to heal Cyndaquil, and the battle would be over in an instant if that happened. It was strange how unbalanced this felt, how unfair this would be if he didn't have Will beside him to help him avoid inevitable defeat... but then that was probably the point, wasn't it? This was always a two person tutorial, and they'd technically had the chance to upgrade their Pokemon right from first getting them. Maybe this was one of those harsh tutorials where you were supposed to lose the first time so that you could go away and upgrade and then come back a second time with the right amount of power on your side.
Whatever, they were going to do this first time regardless. They just needed to get rid of this Chimchar first before it could damage the grass one. Once it was gone, Nero would stop laser-focusing on his own Pokemon and actually consider his ally out on the field... probably.
CHIMCHAR ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE IyMHVz5h2d20+20 Chimchar lost 20 HP
Having been unable to reach the other Pokemon given how it hid behind Cyndaquil's back, the Chimchar had been forced to attack the fire type once more, the pair of them locked in a vicious battle of fire versus fire. It was lucky really - it probably could have dispatched Will's Pokemon very quickly if it had thought to use type advantages, and Nero had no idea what fainting even looked like in this game for Pokemon. They were so nearly there though - just 22 HP left on the opposing Chimchar... A good hit from Cyndaquil would be enough to get rid of it now, and it was close enough that he had a good easy target ahead of him. "One more time, Cyndaquil!" He#d hate to admit that he was getting excited over a dumb video game, but there was no better way to describe this emotion really, was there?
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKS: FIRE-TYPE MOVE 2d20+15 Cyndaquil lost 20 HP
As the little lick of flame left Cyndaquil's snout and headed towards the opposing monkey, Nero's hands gripped into fists and a nearby aunt smiled to herself besides a bedroom door at the voice from within that hadn't sounded this animated for quite some time.

William held his breath as the fire types once more clashed, waves of heat extruding from both Pokemon each time attacks were used. He really was glad it was a game; having something so small but destructive in the real world would no doubt be a recipe for disaster, no matter how idealistic the word of Pokemon had always been made out to be in the games and cartoons. When he watched the rival's first Pokemon go down, he felt a sense of relief knowing at least it couldn't burn his green little friend if it came to it. "You did it Nero, that was incredible!" he said, offering the younger male a big, proud smile. He would have been in serious trouble without the other player, that much was obvious.
BLITZLE ATTACKS: ELECTRIC-TYPE MOVE 7yWfOLNp1d50 Blitzle lost 10 HP
"Hey, it's not over yet!" the rival character yelled before commanding his blitzle to once more attack the green little Pokemon who'd been distracted nuzzling against the cyndaquil to show appreciation for taking care of the first opponent. William's heart dropped a little as he tried to tell it to move out of the way; it seemed that dodging wasn't really a common mechanic in the game, unfortunately.
"Heal yourself quickly," William called, quite nervous about the rest of the battle. Both their Pokemon were at rather low health, and with snivy losing some each time it healed, it wasn't looking too good. Especially considering that the electric zebra seemed to have even more health than the fire monkey had had.

HP AT START OF POST: Chimchar: 42-20-24 = 0/150 Cyndaquil: 74-28-20 = 26/150
The Chimchar fell to the ground and was soon recalled into it's Pokeball by the opposing trainer, and Nero let out a cheer of excitement in response. He vaguely heard a congratulations from the other player by his side as well, though his attention was too laser-focused on the battle ahead to really take that in. "Yes! That was awesome, Cyndaquil!" The main threat was down, the fire type enemy gone, and that only left...
Fuck, how much health did that zebra have?
The thrill of the victory drained out of him very quickly as Nero let his gaze jump from the green health bar above their remaining enemy and the two red ones over their own partners. Given that Pokemon took damage with every attack here, was this even possible now?
Well, he wasn't going to give up, and nor was he going to sit her and do the maths to figure out if it was possible. He was much better off just diving in again with another attack and just hoping that sheer tenacity was all that he would need. But... maybe he'd change the strategy up a little bit. After all, his Pokemon was a Sweeper but that didn't mean it could only do fast attacks, right? There was just the basic option too. "Alright Cyndaquil, just a basic Quick Attack," he ordered, deciding to blatantly ignore the problem even as Will healed his starter again.
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKS: NORMAL-TYPE MOVE 20+15 = 35 Cyndaquil lost 10 HP
The fire type rushed forwards to collide with the zebra, and Nero was relieved to see that his health dropped a little less this time... but was that going to be enough to turn the tides? Frankly, he was rapidly losing hope...

William could already feel his hands shaking slightly as he stared at the unfortunate circumstances ahead; that zebra had way too much health for either of them to have a real chance at taking it down. The very next attack would probably be enough to take his little grass type down and Will had no idea what that meant in the game. Would it just faint for a moment or completely disappear? Surely a game originally meant for children wouldn't be that cruel. There was a lump in his throat and he felt his breath catch as the rival character commanded it's zebra to once more target his little grass type.
13_HpFv01d50
Blitzle lost 10 HP The zebra hit fast and it hit hard; the little grasstype was sent flying and William hurried to catch it before it could hit the ground. He could hear the rival character sneer about how weak of a trainer he was for an old man; William could barely hear him though as he stared at the limp green little creature in his hands. Watching the little creatures head hang limpy made William think of Lucy, his mind flashing to the moment he'd recieved the call and the many nightmares he'd seen about the incident afterwards. He stood there, compltely frozen taking quick with the fainted Snivy in his hands.

HP AT START OF POST: Chimchar: fainted Cyndaquil: 26-10 = 16/150
The grass one went down. It fainted. It was gone. No more healing, no more 'support' (and alright fine now he understood why that was useful), no more allies on the field. Just Cyndaquil limping along on his last legs and a seemingly fully healthy zebra on the opposite side of the battle.
"Fuck..."
He obviously couldn't just forfeit even though the outcome of this battle was obvious to anyone. Perhaps if there hadn't been anyone else around he would have done so, just rage quit out of the game entirely - perhaps that was why they insisted these tutorials were all partnered. Something something learning through defeat was just as valuable nonsense. Whatever, it meant that he was going to have to fight through to the bitter end here, even though it was just the dumb old man who was watching him. That was enough social pressure to keep him locked in place.
"Do another fast attack," he said to Cyndaquil as he tried to block out the inevitability of what was to come. The fire mouse just looked up at its trainer in confusion though, and it took Nero a few moments to realise why. "Oh. Your health. Right..." Not with a bang but with a whimper then. "Just another Quick Attack then, before it hits you first." This time he earned a nod, and the tired little creature rushed at the far bulkier enemy for what would most likely be the last time.
CYNDAQUIL ATTACKS: NORMAL-TYPE MOVE 20+15 = 35 Cyndaquil lost 10 HP
"Good job." It was mumbled, but it was praise all the same. And it felt kind of stupid to be offering it to what was functionally just computer code, but it had slipped out of his mouth all the same. Nothing left to do but grit his teeth and wait for the taunting that was going to come from this 'rival' then... could you punch the NPCs in this game? He'd find out soon enough.

As he held Snivy in his hands, suddenly it turned into pixels and disappeared, leaving him holding nothing but the empty space where the green little creature had just been. Immedietly panicking, Will checked the UI thing to see if his companion was gone for good; luckily the Pokemon was still in his party, just marked as 'fainted'. Fainted... that meant as long as he took it to get healed, it would be okay, right? Shaking his head and pushing his shaky hands into his pockets, William stepped back and watched the rest of the battle play out while trying to calm down. He really had not expected any of the tutorials to be so hard; without both players having type advantage here it seemed unlikely that the rival could be beaten. Not to mention the type strong against fire would be weak against the far more powerful zebra while something super effective against it wasn't probably available at this point in the game. He supposed this was the game's way of telling the players to properly upgrade their Pokemon. It felt a little unfair still and he couldn't help but to wonder if Lucy had felt upset too or if she'd known to make her partner more powerful before taking the challenge on.

Blitzle lost 10 HP The blitzle was barely halfway down while Will's pokemon had already fainted and Nero's Pokemon was about to go down. He watched with a frown on his face as the zebra-looking Pokemon lunged forward, attacking the fire type head first and pushing it back several feet the same way it had done to his snivy. Even if there was no blood or gore or anything, Will still felt like the game was unnecessarily brutal... though maybe he was just sensitive, given his current state. Admittedly, William was surprised to see Nero's pokemon still standing after the attack.
"Hah, you're so low on health you can't even attack anymore," the rival sneered, "I told you, I was gonna kick your butt. I mean seriously, my blitzle isn't even at half health. God you two are soooo bad at this it's straight up sad."

HP AT START OF POST: Chimchar: fainted Cyndaquil: 16-10 = 6/150
Somehow, Cyndaquil was still standing. Despite using his own attack, despite being hit by the zebra once more, he was still clinging on by a tiny sliver of health, the same stubbornness as Nero apparently fueling him on. That made sense, didn't it? They probably programmed the starter to be a reflection of the player in some way, something to do with cookies or algorithms or something (Nero wasn't great with technology and how it worked). It probably helped the player bond, and truly, Nero did feel more attached to his little fire mouse already. Despite the imminent loss, this tutorial had been good for something.
As the Rival NPC started jeering at them again, Nero's attention focused back on the other human avatar opposite him, and suddenly the Pokemon on the field didn't seem to matter anymore. They were just a distraction between him and this other person, who right now was not registering as just 'lines of data' but instead as a real breathing entity like himself and Will. And while Nero might have lost this battle - even with Cyndaquil still clinging on, he was unable to attack again anyway - there were other ways that he could beat this guy. "The fuck you just say to me?"
Anger had been his most fluent language for years now, so many problems being 'solved' through violent outbursts, fists flying into faces and walls alike. It came far more naturally to him than Pokemon battles did, and so without really thinking about it, Nero found himself striding across the battlefield towards the now rather concerned looking rival. "Say it to my face, I fucking dare you." The flames that licked at his heels had grown bigger, and Cyndaquil even let out a supportive squeak as Nero marched past him.
The rival hesitated, murmured some words about it just being a joke, but didn't get much more out before Nero was swinging a fist at him. He ducked, called out in protest, before retreating as Nero's fist raised again. More sputtered insults and complaints filled the air as the rival scampered backwards, with Nero marching after him and Cyndaquil trotting briefly behind, until the Pokeball was pointed back at him to recall him for rest. The battle was over... the Pokemon part of it anyway.
