Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

And he did feel bad about leaving his team in rough shape longer than they should be, so he was headed there, he was just making a slight detour. Afterall, he might as well do a little more fishing while he is at the coast. Besides, all his pokemon were safely in their balls so as long as they stayed there, it wouldn’t be an issue. Manish stood upon a rock that was being battered by waves and he threw in his line. He’ll just snag one more fish and then go to the Shrine. Of course he needed to figure out what to do with all the fish he had recently caught, plus a few other random pokemon he collected along the way while trying to help out Bunya. Bethany would probably take a few, but maybe he could do some other trading? He would have to reach out to Morgana and see if she wanted something, she liked fish and he had lots of fish.

Of course that would also require battling the fish and he was currently hiding from all of his pokemon. Manish thought for a moment while pulling on the line. He did have that new pokemon, the Glaceon, after that big fight. Maybe he could see if they were okay with fighting. He gave one final tug on the pole and a brown Magikarp flew out of the water to flop on the rock in front of him. Manish rummaged around in his bag for a while before finding the right pokeball. He crouched down, set the ball on the ground, and pressed the button. In a flash of light, he was greeted with the curious face of a Glaceon. “Um, uh, hi?” <Oh, hello. You’re my trainer, then?> Manish rubbed at the mushrooms growing in his hair. “Um, oh yeah, um. Yes, that’s uh me. I guess. So uh, here’s the thing. I sorta fished up that Magikarp over there,” Manish pointed at the fish that was trying to flop over to where they were conversing, “and um, I just wanted to ask if you, uh, well if you were okay um, with fighting? You don’t need to! Of course! I would never make you, but if you wanted to, um, you uh, can?” Glaceon stared at him for a moment before letting out a small chuckle. <Oh of course, you sweet thing. I’ll fight for you. You seem like a gentle soul, so I will take care of this silly Magikarp.> “Oh! Oh wow, um, wow yeah, thanks? I guess? Um, I don’t really know what you can, uh, do…” <Aren’t you just adorable? No worries, dear, we can start with something simple, like an Icy Wind?> Manish thought for a moment before nodding, “Yeah, uh, yeah use Icy Wind?” Glaceon turned to the Magikarp that was making considerable progress towards flopping over to them and she smirked. <Oh that just won’t do now, will it?> She let out a yip and a bitter, freezing wind picked up behind her to batter the Magikarp.

The Magikarp was blown back slightly before flopping itself forward again and returning fire with a burst of water. Glaceon took the hit and shook herself off <Oh deary, me. Seems like this little fish is quite the tough cookie. Now, dear, how about another move?> Manish took a moment to remember that she was actually talking to him. “Oh right, um, yeah, another move. Uh, do you um, do you know Take Down? I know that one.” Glaceon nodded, <A feisty move, huh? Well alright, one Take Down coming right up.> Glaceon darted forward towards the Magikarp and threw herself at the fish with reckless abandon.

Glaceon rolled back to her feet and glanced over the Magikarp at Manish. <Now, sweet thing, you should be able to look up my moves in that handy little contraption you have.> Manish glanced at his communicator. He never really paid attention to the thing other than when he would occasionally consider sending messages to Yggy or Morgana before he would chicken out and close it out. Quickly he scrolled through it before he found the right section. “Oh. Oh! Wow! Okay, um, yeah, okay thanks, uh…” Manish realized that his new pokemon didn’t actually have a name and stuttered for a moment, “...hm, um, anyway, okay yeah, use uh, Swift? That sounds uh, fast?” Glaceon chuckled at the fumbling man and braced her paws on the slippery rock as she summoned up her power. With a yelp she directed the stars of power at the Magikarp between her and Manish.

Once it landed, the Magikarp sprang back up and fired another jet of water at Glaceon. The water pushed her back closer to the edge of the rock the battle was taking place on. Her little paws scrambled to gain a grip on the rock and she let out a soft chuckle when she was finally able to steady herself. <That just wasn’t nice, now was it? Come on, dear. What’s the next move you would like me to try?> Manish shifted his weight between his two feet. The fight was getting dangerously close to the edge of the water and he wasn’t too keen on the idea of his new pokemon falling in. He couldn’t swim and would be more of a hindrance than anything. Really the only pokemon he had that might be able to save Glaceon if she fell was Mumble and Manish really really didn’t want to ask Mumble for help. Stress mushrooms pushed their way through the cracks in the rocks by Manish’s feet as he scrolled through the possible moves Glaceon could do. “Um, how about, uh, okay, look, please move away from the edge? Please? I uh, let’s see, Quick Attack? I know that one, that one lets you move away from the edge. So do that. Um. Please?” <Oh bless your heart, dear. Don’t you worry that soft little head of yours, I will be fine.> Manish only had a moment to contemplate if ‘soft head’ was a compliment or insult before Glaceon dashed forward in a blur towards the Magikarp, and more importantly, away from the crashing waves behind her.

Manish stumbled backwards and barely caught himself before falling over. It seemed like for the most part the Magikarp completely forgot that he was even there, which was probably for the best. However he wasn’t a big fan of Glaceon steadily herding the fish closer to him. Magikarp let out another stream of water and Glaceon took the hit like all the others. She seemed more annoyed than anything that she was occasionally getting water in the face. Glaceon shook her head and glanced at Manish again for the next move. Not fully thinking it through, Manish shrugged and decided to go back to the first move. “Use uh, use the first one again. Icy Wind? Yeah, yeah use that one on it!” Only after Glaceon braced herself and the wind started to pick up did Manish realize that he was also technically in the way of the blast of wind and he didn’t really think the little fish between him and Glaceon was going to act as a great shield.

Before Manish could even think about getting out of the way, the fish slammed into his stomach sending both of them flying backwards. Manish lay on his back in a daze as the cold air dissipated and Glaceon pranced her way over. <Oh good job catching that Magikarp, dear. However I do think that you aren’t supposed to literally catch them.> Manish glanced down and realized that he had his arms wrapped around the now knocked out Magikarp. “Oh. Oh ew, it’s uh, it’s kinda slimy. Uh, okay, yeah no. I should probably actually catch, um, it.” He removed one of his arms from the Magikarp to fish around his pocket for an empty ball. Once he found it he tapped it against the fish and let the ball fall against his chest while it shook. He tilted his head up to look at the Glaceon sitting nicely next to his head. “So, um, wow that was uh, yeah. Good fight? I guess? Um, hey, so, I should name you now, right? Or do you have one? Oh man, I asked Ryan about that, but I didn’t ask anyone else if they already had names! Oh no, oh geeze, what if they did and they just are tolerating me calling them the wrong name?” Mushrooms started to appear around Manish’s body as he worked himself into a frenzy. <Calm down, dear, we don’t have pre-assigned names. That’s all on you. Or I suppose if you prefer you don’t need to name us.> Glaceon said as she scooted away from the mushrooms. Manish took a deep breath. “Oh. Okay. Really? That seems weird. Like, just to call you uh, Glaceon? What if there are multiple uh, you know, Glaceons? That seems confusing. Um. Okay, look, you’re really nice. How about June? I used to know a June. Well, I guess I still know her, but I haven’t seen her in a really long time. She worked with Father once and was always really nice to me” <June is a lovely name, dear. I will happily go by that. Now why don’t you pick yourself up and let’s go get healed up.> Manish let out a long sigh. “Yeah, okay, I guess we can go to the shrine.” He was not looking forward to this at all.
