"Jiaaaaanny Appleseed? I guess it's kind of cute, sounds familiar too, not sure where it's from though." Jian monologued to himself idly, a little bit of a habit he's gained from his times spent streaming. He took his time walking down the path towards Briarbane as marked on his map. There were a couple of tutorial quests marked out on the UI by the corner of his vision. "Hmmm, I feel like I should go say goodbye to Mom first. What do you think, Yanyan?" From Jian's shoulder, perched precariously, a Litten yawned from where it rests.
When it first came out, it almost seemed to have wanted nothing to do with him. Jian has already earned a couple of scratches on his hand from trying to pet it and it spent several seconds licking its fur back into place.
"Don't you know it's rude to just go randomly petting someone without purrmission?!" It exclaimed in a huff, even from a slight distance, Jian could feel the heat emanating from its body.
The man rubbed the back of his palm, the scratch he got wasn't deep enough to draw blood but it still hurt. Which was also threw him for a loop. He recalled putting the Pain Threshold on realistic but this is a little too real, isn't it?
"Well?" The litten stared at Jian expectantly.
"Huh? Oh! Uh, um, sorry...?"
"Hmm, that's more like it! Good to know that my trainer has manners at least!" The cat looking pokemon nodded its head, seemingly satisfied for now before stretching.
Jian has never owned a cat before, but from prior experiences in real life, this does seem very much like how a cat is like. Minus the talking of course. It's kind of funny honestly.
"Right, well, sorry about that again. Anyway, my name's Jian, and it's still very nice to meet you. What's your...name?" As soon as the words left his lips, Jian realized that you're usually the one who's supposed to give the pokemon the nickname, right? This new way of playing the game has made all his muscle memory of Pokemon fly out the window.
"Hrmm...nice to meet you too. And I don't have one, you could give me one I guess, make sure it's not some dumb name though!" The Litten lashed it spiky tail in warning.
Jian couldn't help but chuckle, "I mean, I'll try my best. Hmmm...well, how about Yanyan?" His reasoning being because Litten's color scheme looked a lot like this brand of chocolate dip biscuit's packaging.
"Yanyan?" It tilted his head questioningly. "Hrmrm...Yanyan's fine, I suppose." The Litten, now named Yanyan, stretched once again. Jian wondered if it's even possible for a pokemon to reject the nickname given to it. There's also now the very real chance where he'll have a massive Incineroar following him in the future named Yanyan. But that's something for future Jian to deal with.
For now, we continue from where we left off. With Yanyan casting a sleepy glance at Jian from his shoulder. How it got there was, well, it got tired of walking at some point and decided to jump on for a quick nap. In which Jian learns that you don't initiate touch with cats, they usually initiate with you.
"You know, you talk to yourself a lot? Anyway, I guess you could go say bye first. It's also only polite, right?" Yanyan replied, the slight hint of thoughtfulness in it's voice.
"Yeah, I guess you're right, let's not keep her waiting then!" Jian replied with a grin as he continued down the path but not before suddenly halting at a pop-up on his UI.
TUTORIAL 004 - WHAT”S THE CATCH? MEET UP WITH YOUR TUTORIAL PARTNER AND CAPTURE A POKEMON SUCCESSFULLY
"Huh? A tutorial partner? Wha- Well, uh, slight detour. We'll be catching a pokemon first then! Who's this Tutorial Partner I'm supposed to have though?"

Wobble. The two birds look nothing like each other, yet their movements are almost perfectly synchronised. Wobbling from side-to-side with every step, they walk along the road, flanking a man who is much much taller than them while having what out-of-context could be considered a great contestant for the most unhinged conversation ever: <'Let’s go beat something up! Pew! Argh! Hiiii-yaaaaa!'> The Piplup suggests, dramatically punching and slapping the air with soft and arguably harmless flippers. <'Yeah, yeah! Let’s break something.'> The Torchic jumps in, quite literally giving a little hop and everything. “Damn... You two need to chill.” Contrary to the Pokémon’s behaviour, the man gives an exceedingly heavy sign, yet a smirk marks his lips all the same, and that long and sinuous dragon tail of his sways as if he too were restless. “We’re going somewhere, don’t ya worry.”He had put this off for a bit now, with UNOVR being filled to the brim with things to do and all, but today felt like a good day to do a tutorial, and so off the go to its location. In an act of spectacular timing, the pop-up appears before his Pokémon can even ask what Oz is up to. MEET UP WITH YOUR TUTORIAL PARTNER AND CAPTURE A POKEMON SUCCESSFULLY.“Aha. There we go.” He looks around, and when seeing Jian and his Litten, he raises a hand in greeting. “Yo. You’re here for the tutorial, right? Same here. I’m Oz, good to meet ya.”The Piplup tilts his head to the left, looking up at the strangers. <'I’m Peri!'>The Torchic tilts his head to the right. <'Yo! I’m Tango.'>And, at this, Oz chuckles, giving the strangers a smile. "I think we need to head to the tall grass when we wanna get started... That's usually how catch tutorials go in the games, yeah? You a Pokémon fan?"

Jian looked around at the voice of someone new and his eyes near boggled at the sight of the piplup and torchic. "Woah! A torchic and a piplup??" Alright, dial it back a bit there, buddy. Jian quickly cleared his throat in embarrassment. "I mean, uh, yeah, big fan of pokemon, guess it's no surprise there, Hahaha!" The man grinned before extending a hand in greeting as well.
"Anyway, nice to meet you, Oz, Peri and Tango. Real cool names you've got! Name's Jian, and this grumpy guy here," He raised his shoulder, jostling the litten on his shoulder slightly, "Is Yanyan." Said Yanyan simply did the cat equivalent of an eyeroll but decided to sit up now in the presence of strangers. "Don't mind him, he just woke from a nap. He's the one who's always trying to remind me of my manners ever since I got him." That comment earned him a tiny bap on the head.
"But yeah, I guess we should be heading into the tall grass 'practice' catching pokemon. Though judging from your little entourage there, it looks like you catch just fine." The man laughed as he turned to walk towards the edge of the tall grass. It was always kind of hard to imagine how tall these grass patches could be from a console, now that it was right in front of him, he never realized just how tall they could get. He wondered if they felt as uncomfortable and scratchy as grass in real life.
As he begin to take a step out, code flashed before Jian's eyes as a familiar blocky looking pokemon appeared, floating in front of him.
"Hello! I am C0D13, your handy Virtual Assistant and I am here to teach the two of you," It then turned to look at Oz as well, "How to catch a Pokemon in UNOVR!"

"Ha! Great to meet ya, Jian and Yanyan. Cut Jian some slack, eh? He seems like a chill guy." Oz smirks, going off nothing but vibes and five seconds of interactions, and still believing himself to be an excellent judge of character. It might just be a hidden talent of his: the ability to take everything in stride and brush away all awkwardness as if it had never been there to begin with. "Oh yeah... I caught a few Pokémon before coming back to the tutorial 'cause I couldn't wait to explore the other areas." He admits with a light and quiet chuckle, then nodding towards Tango. "Peri is my starter, but I caught Tango in Beta Island... I heard most starter Pokémon spawn there? You should totally get yourself a commuter pass if you're into those, it's—."Before he can go on ranting to Jian about awesome UNOVR things that have nothing to do with this tutorial, C0D13's appearance puts them right back on track, and thankfully the Porygon seems to be in a much better mood than when he started attacking people at the convention center back during UNOVRcon. Still, Oz narrows those blue eyes of his, expecting at least some sassiness from the game's customer service AI. "Listen up! Pokémon of all varieties and regions appear across UNOVR! Each route has both ambient Pokémon and catchable Wild Pokémon, which occasionally spawn in a Player Character's vicinity. Catchable Pokémon are marked with a Pokeball icon!" Just the helpful tutorial dialogue one can expect to find in a the UI's codex, then? No sassiness? Maybe C0D13 isn't so bad after all... "These Pokémon are wild, and won't go down without a fight! You will need to knock out a Pokémon (or reduce it to 10% of its health) before you can catch it. Give it a try!"As if responding to some (most definitely coded) cue, the nearby grass rustles with the movement of some Pokémon or other, and Oz shrugs, looking at Jian: "Pretty standard stuff, yeah? Wanna start us off?"

"Hah! I totally get going on ahead to explore, but I had a feeling I'll completely forget about the tutorial once I stepped out of this area, so what I've been doing is just, uh, a super thorough comb through of the tutorial area." Jian snickered in response before earning a small bap to the head.
"You should listen to the Porygon talking! How else are you gonnya learn!" Yanyan hissed before nudging at the man's head. "Please, it's called multi-tasking. I'm sure it's not that hard." Famous last words for the books for sure.
But even so, Jian decided to shut his trap long enough to hear out the rest of C0D13's explanation. Yeah, it is pretty standard as far as pokemon games went.
Excitement welled up inside of him at the rustling in the grass, the wide grin never leaving his features. It was almost too obvious how excited his was. Still, he had to keep up some form of an appearance as Oz gave him the 'after you.'
"Alright, let's see what we got then. You ready, Yanyan?"
"Honestly, it's about time!" The litten gave himself another once over with the grooming before hopping lightly off Jian's shoulder.
As the man stepped towards the tall grass, a purple head popped it's head from out.
"Oh! A purrloin, that's not too bad. Uh, wait, so do I just..."
Actually, now that he's in the thick of it, did he have to call out pokemon attacks like in the anime? It's not like he has the whole lot of it memorized!
Yanyan lets out a super exaggerated sigh (he's so dramatic, geez), and before Jian could even think up of something to say, shoots out a small ball of fire from out of his mouth directly at the Purrloin.

Inevitably, a light laugh escapes Oz when the constant scolding offered to Jian by his starter Pokémon. He can't help it! Although, honestly, the whole thing is kind of cute in an endearing sort of way. And, maybe that's exactly why he decides to step aside and let them figure this one out. He had already caught Pokémon before before, so it only makes sense, right? Plus, the learning curve when it comes to this sort of thing isn't that steep, even if — as Jian also seems to realise — the lack of clear options or buttons to click can take a moment to get used to. It's all good, they got this! <'Woooo! Yeah! Beat 'em up!'> Very Peri the Piplup encourages Yanyan, apparently happy to play the role of cheerleader. Of course, Tangerine Tango is quick to join in, because the two must be a bad comedy duo or something. <'Fuck yeah! Fireball!'>It gets a smirk out of Oz. Fireball totally isn't a Pokémon move, or is it? "You guys wanna help?" Truth be told, he's not all that interested in whatever that purple cat is, but it needs to be caught for the tutorial to be complete, and he had recently heard of one of the trade shops having Pokémon he's actually interested in. So, like... two birds, one stone and all, right? Ironic. "Peri, give me a Water Gun."<'Ayo. You got it, boss!'> Stubby as his little flippers are, Peri's joking salute isn't much of a salute at all, but the Piplup seems unbothered by this, and he's quick to turn his attention to the cat that is now hissing and scratching wildly. Arguably an appropriate reaction to being hit with fire. <'You! Yeah, you! You think you can mess with us, huh? Think again!'>Cue the stream of highly-pressurised water that is shot directly at the poor cat. "Yo, not bad at all. Honestly, I think usually they understand if you want them to attack." Oz tells Jian, addressing the concern that had been made clear even when not voiced while completely ignoring the actual attack currently going on. He smiles and shrugs, ever nonchalant. "You can see what moves your 'mon have available if you check your inventory, though."Now, as for the poor purple cat... Had they done enough to catch it by now?

As good as Tango and Peri were at being hype-men (hype-mons?), Oz clearly had a better hold on this situation as his piplup waddled on ahead to blast the purrloin into next week with his water gun. Suppose the starting moves aren't exactly all that complicated to remember if he actually went to bother with reading it up.
Jan scratched the back of his head while grinning sheepishly at Oz's words. "Yeah, it sure seems like it. Thanks for the back up, Peri. Also you did great, Yanyan, it'll be better next time." The man said as he made a quick attempt to pet the Litten's head before pulling back just as he swiped at him with his paw.
"I'll hold you to that." The tiny cat replied in a huff before getting back to licking his fur down.
In the meantime, the purrloin laid prone and unmoving, very clearly knocked out from that one blast of fireball followed by water, though Jian wasn't sure how he's supposed to catch it since it's not like he's made it to any Pokemarts or anything of the like just yet.
As if on cue, C0D13 appeared once again in a flash of code.
"Wow, that was quite a fight!" It wasn't, really. "At it's current state, the pokemon won't be able to flee and you're free to catch it with a pokeball!" The porygon turned to look at Jian with its beady, angular eyes.
"Since this is your first time attempting to catch a pokemon, I have a special gift for you!" Out of thin air, a golden pokeball was spawned before Jian, landing lightly in his hands as he extended to catch it. "You get unlimited attempts with this particular Pokeball. Though it would be quite a feat for you to miss something that can't run away." Was that a slight hint of sarcasm in there?
"Anyway, go ahead and give it a shot!"
"Wow, absolutely no pressure on being a bad shot, huh. Didn't think I'm going to be judged by the tutorial itself." Jian chuckled before stepping out towards the purrloin. While nothing said he couldn't just go right up to the body and toss the ball at it, this was something he's always wanted to do ever since he watched the anime as a kid.
Tossing the ball up once in the air as a test, the man then revved his arm back before throwing it over where the Purrloin laid. The middle section of the pokeball opens before a bright light encased the pokemon before absorbing(?) it in.
Jian waited for the tell-tale sign of a pokemon trying to escape a ball but when none came, he warily walked over towards the pokeball that now laid still on the ground.
"Huh, I guess that's it then?" The man said as he gently picked it up. It's a little different when you know there's something inside there now.

"Ha!... Maybe the devs were nice enough to give throws a margin of error or something? Not sure, though that guy totally looks like he'd laugh at us if we fuck up." Oz chuckles while in the process of crouching down to pet Peri for doing a good job. He gives Tango a few head pats too, so he doesn't feel left out and what not. And, yes, by 'that guy' he totally meets C0D13, who apparently turns his attention to him once satisfied with Jian's performance. "Look at that! Nailed it. Guess maybe catch attempts never f—..." Oz doesn't manage to get the rest of his praise and musings out, because he's quickly cut off before he can even finish the sentence: "The usual success rate for captures is 100%! Be careful, though, activating your Golden Pokéball to catch a Pokémon costs 25 bytes!""Dude, the hell? You could've said so before Jian made the throw." He sighs, but when the Porygon suddenly darts forward and gets right in his face, he's quick to drop all complaints. "Right, right, 'course catching Pokémon costs bytes, gotcha."C0D13 nods, its whole blocky body rocking back and forth in the air, and just like that, he continues with his explanations while another Golden Pokéball materialises, this time before Oz himself: "Up to two players who contributed to the battle may catch a Pokémon. Give it a shot!""Sir, yes, sir." This time, the response is spoken in the most unenthusiastic manner possible, but ever one to take things in stride, Oz laughs lightly and shakes his head towards Jian in a 'Can you believe this guy?' sort of way before taking hold of the fancy golden sphere. Pretty neat. Way cooler and more aesthetic than the classic Pokéballs, honestly. And see, the truth is that he had wondered about the whole 'two players catching one Pokémon' thing, as he himself had done as much before. Sure enough, if he squints, right there where the weird purple cat had fainted and then been caught, the translucent image of it flickers back into existence for a second or two. A partially pixelated echo. Is it some sort of glitch that had been made into a feature? Oz has heard that UNOVR sometimes did things like those, and hell, he had been to Beta Island; he had seen all that glitch-iness first-hand and it sure is a wacky sight to behold. Either way, this time it's convenient and kind of cool, and with that thought in mind, he chucks the Golden Pokéball in the echo's general area. "Nice work! Enjoy your time playing UNOVR and remember that you can always contact C0D13 if you ever need any more assistance."With that, the Porygon disappears as quickly as suddenly as it had first appeared, leaving only the players and their Pokémon. Oz takes a step to pick up his Golden Pokéball, checking his inventory. "Huh... Guess that's it, then..."

"Huh, you'd think spending spending something would make a pop-up appear or something, but it's fine I guess, 25 bytes isn't that much, uh, right?" Jian asked with a shrug and a chuckle as he stepped back to watch Oz make his catch. Which lands of course.
And with a final leaving message, the Porygon bloops back out of existence.
"Yeah, I guess that's it. If I didn't know better, it seemed like you had a bit of bad blood with C0d13 there." Jian laughed as he stepped towards the other. He wondered if catching a pokemon like that meant they just cloned the coding for the pokemon or something. Would they just have the same stats and everything? Well, that's not something for him to figure out.
"Well, thanks for joining me in this tutorial mode, hope it didn't feel like too much of a slog doing what you already know," Jian extended a hand towards Oz for a handshake, it seemed a little formal in hindsight but well, it's already out. "Also real nice getting to meet you two." Jian grinned at Tango and Peri.
