QUEST LINE 2: GLOBAL SWARMING POPULATION EXPLOSION ON BETA ISLANDA notification pops up on your UI: A video message from Professor Ash. "Hello, trainers. I trust your simple collection mission is going well. After all, it's barely been..." she makes a show of checking her slim watch, "...two weeks."
She sighs, the type of practiced and needlessly dramatic sigh of someone used to working with colleagues who blast through deadlines. "Anyway, let me add to what I can only assume is your vast laundry list of crucial tasks." The image switches to a topographical map of Beta Island, which shows the coast, rainforest, and central volcano in a series of cyan outlines. "My biomass monitoring shows a vast increase in island spawns. Something must have destabilized the ecosystem, and now certain Pokemon are breeding rapidly to fill the developing niches."
Ash realizes what she's said and paraphrases for your benefit. "The Pokemon are swarming. Defeating and catching them should settle the population for now, but we need to find out what has thrown off the balance. Investigate and get back to me." The video ends.

"Oh, boy! Can't wait to catch a Fennekyn!"Grinning from ear to ear, Yggy made two fox heads with his hands like shadow puppets and waggled them at the new guy he'd barely just met through the game's auto-party feature, Lucky Guy. "Big Bee said there's some around here. I've never seen one and I usually hang out around here, though!"As a Kindler, Yggy had no trouble in the hot, smoky air of the Beta Island Crater. The heat permeating from the rock beneath his Running Shoes, the shimmer in the air-- it all just felt comfortable to him. He continued to chatter, sticking his hands in his pockets. "So you guys got the message from the Professor too, right? About all the swarms and stuff? Have you guys seen one yet? I haven't but like, I really want to." Despite his words, he didn't seem interested in searching for wild Pokemon. He seemed much more fixated on making a new friend. He looked eagerly up at Lucky like a stray dog hoping to make a good impression. "I'm Yggy, by the way! With two Y's, 'cuz I hate I's. Or maybe I should say "Y" hate I's! Am I right?" He gave a short, nervous laugh, rubbing the back of his head. Boy, I hope he likes me...

The heat in the Beta Island Crater wasn't a fun one to Lucky Guy. He still persisted on spending the daytime here, as he'd woken up earlier than he was used to. Sometimes you just woke up and couldn't calm back down, and Lucky had little else to do other than this. The bleak smoke cloaked the sky as a smog would, clouding the time of day away. Because of this, he could almost pretend he was playing out at night like he was used to. The comforting thought was enough to keep him awake in this blanketing heat.
-Oh, that guy he'd come with was talking to him. "Ah. Yeah, you're right. I think we'll find a Fennekin or two just fine. It's not like anything else would show up all the way out here, right? I'm Lucky, so of course we'll find what you're looking for." Lucky hoped so, to say the least. In truth, there were likely many other fire types that they were about to run into instead. Such was the nature of such a diverse wilderness they were in. Still, he at least tried to sound confident in it. This Yggy guy he was autofilled with sounded unsure if Lucky liked him at all. Best to sound as friendly as he could to ease the nerves.
Not to mention who else had nerves around the party. His Rowlett Rustle was watching intently around himself, constantly hooting little whispers into Lucky's ear that could roughly be interpreted as 'why do you always send me into scary situations?' Lucky hardly had an answer for that besides 'everything I've found so far has been scary,' which hardly brought high hopes to the poor thing.
It would be soon that Rustle's fears would be confirmed-something was coming from the distance. Many a something indeed...

Big Bee laughed hard at Yggy's joke. "Nice one Little Y! Or should I say 'Nyce one Lyttle Y!'" He looked around at the smoky crater. There were rocks, burnt out trees. bubbling mud puddles, and a distinct lack of cute little foxes. "I've never seen any here either. I was just going off the message."
"You're Lucky? Good news and good to meet you!" Big Bee said, sticking out his hand to shake with their new friend. "I'm Big Bee! I don't have any hatred of letters or ability to summon my namesake though. I'm actually allergic." "What's a Bee? Like, Ribombee?" Taka asked. The Wartortle was laying on the ground gnawing a steak. "Yeah Ribombee, Beedrill, Combee. There's a surprising number of bee Pokemon." Taka's eyebrows raised in mild interest, but he asked no more.

The gloomy owl on his shoulder whispered frantically, cutting off whatever response Lucky had for the Bee. There wasn't much of a good anything when one could see a horde on the horizon.
"I-uh, I don't think that's supposed to happen," Lucky understated-if only he could receive a prize for his endless wit on the matter. The Rowlett continued to quietly panick to itself and Lucky both, assuring him that this was the end for them all.
"Yeah, wee buddy? You think I can't see that? We're in this mess, and we're gonna get out of it. Give 'er a lash!" The declaration was all the lad needed to toss his grass type bird against dozens of feral foxes. Perhaps some would call this cruel, but it was a nessecary act and the two of them both knew it.
So it went that the diminutive verdant shade began their desperate reign of terror.

"Holy cow!" Yggy managed, eyes rounding as the horde appeared on the horizon. "That's like... a lot." Like, a lot a lot. Like, wildebeest stampede in the Lion King a lot. "Are we gonna die?" the blonde teen wondered out loud as the foxes poured down the slope towards them. The thunder of their tiny paws on black stone shook him like bass notes at a school dance. He felt his palms sweating for reasons other than the heat as yellow bodies swarmed towards them with a beehive's fury, the cliffs of the crater ringing with the resonance of fifty-eight identical growls. Yggy covered his eyes. When he opened them again, those bodies were flying in every direction, furry fallout from the apparent Rowlet bomb Lucky had lobbed in their direction. He couldn't help it. He cheered. "Woooooo! Dang dude, you really are Lucky!" He gave an enthusiastic fist-pump, gaining courage at the sight. "C'mon Watson, it's our turn!" He tossed a Pokeball forward and his Oshawott appeared, squinting into the sun. <Lunchtime, huh? Oh, shit! Never mind,> the little pokemon said, doing a double-take as he caught sight of what was left of the Fennekin swarm. The scant twenty foxes were creeping closer to the three trainers, wariness in their eyes. "Aqua Jet! Knock 'em outta the park!" Yggy exclaimed, pointing at the fox closest to them. Watson gave a little salute. <Aye aye!> he said cheerfully, summoning a veil of water around his body. The Fennekin eyed him suspiciously, lips wrinkling back from yellow teeth. As the Oshawott shot towards the lead Fennekin in a liquid bullet of fur and fat, the dog reacted. It kicked off the ground, launching itself into the air and knocking off Watson's trajectory with a kick of the back paws. Smoking like a downed comet, Watson hit the ground in front of Yggy, spraying water droplets and soot. <Man down...!>

"I've got you!" Big Bee called, and he pointed at the downed Oshawott. "Taka! Save him!" "Huh?" "What do you mean 'huh?'! Go save our friend! He's being attacked by twenty foxes!" Taka looked conflicted. "GO!" Big Bee shoved the Wartortle with his boot and Taka reluctantly jetted across the hot stones on a wave of steaming foam.
The foxes closed in on Oshawott like a pack of more dangerous predators, tiny teeth bared hungrily. One of them yipped at the struggling water type. Taka didn't do war crys. He didn't do witty one liners or banter. He was heavy. Fully of malaise and steaks. He didn't have the speed of a young Squirtle anymore.
What he did have was inertia.
Taka hit the squabble of foxes like a quad bike driving full speed through a petting zoo.
He grabbed Oshawott on the way through, pulling the young water type in close and saving them from certain nibbling.

The battle seemed to be going in full after the one-sided display of base struggling shocked the fennekin horde into silence. Now that the fennekins had found their courage again, brutal violence reigned as each side tore into the other with whatever they could use, fire and bubbles flying everywhere.
All wars must end, however. And this one was doomed to end soon-for the Rowlett had turned around and come back into the fray, having gained new vigor and lost for battle from his first fray's high.
Unfortunately, adrenaline had a way of being followed by a crash afterwards. The bird fell flat on his face before ever again reaching the site of fire. A few fennekin took shots at his tired form out of a need for vengeance.

Watson gave an oof as Taka grabbed him, tearing him from the nibbling jaws of baby foxes just in the nick of time. <Whew! That was a close call!> the otter puffed, body bumping up and down on the volcanic tuff as Taka motored across the Crater like a moving dirt bike. Yggy yanked at two fistfuls of his hair as the swarm turned on poor Lucky's Rowlet instead. "Arrgh, they're everywhere! Get off Rowlet, you big chickens!" he shouted, pulling up his active party to search for another Pokémon. He selected his Farfetch'd, Ducker from the list and threw out the fighting-type's Pokeball. "Sand Attack, buddy!" The mallard hefted his oversized leek over one powerful shoulder, bringing it down with a boom and a crack as the basalt underfoot shattered. Rock dust rose from the cracks as Ducker spun his leek in a circle, whipping a cloud of iron-gray sand towards the Fennekin swarm. Dust settled in the debris-choked air as the remaining Fennekin fled, scrambling awkwardly from the cliffs and crags of the Crater. Three individuals remained, pawing at their sand-choked eyes. "...Pokeball, go!"

QUEST COMPLETE! "Nice work, trainers." Professor Ash's voice emanates from your UI as another video message loads on-screen. "My sensors are reading that the swarm has been neutralized successfully."
The quest marker you had been standing on spins once in place before disappearing in a shower of pixels, leaving only two remaining on your minimap. "Take your findings to Dr. Bunya, I'm sure she'll be as pleased as I am. Keep up the good work."
The video message ends, the Professor's serious tone clashing with the peal of congratulatory music that plays. You defeated a whole Fennekin swarm! It's time to celebrate!

"...Yeah, bang on. Still, though..." As the cheerful message faded, an introspective lucky was left alone with a field of fennekin, an empty land of slag and a question to go with all of this. Looking to Big Bee and Yggy Br00ks as he palmed the now-full Pokéball on his hand he called out, "Hey, I can't help but feel we got the bad dose of this job. Did you all hear what the professor said? 'Investigate' to 'find out what threw off the balance'.
Maybe it's just me, but this whole swarm's got me curious now. Maybe something's nearby. I say we goons should stick together and take a lookie, yeah?" Lucky kept a trained (on code, if nothing else) eye out to the distance from which the fennekin had come. Not even the arrival of his rowlett on his foot broke his focus. Lucky was scanning the distance of the Crater's crags in hopes of finding any feature on the walls. Hopefully a cave of some sorts... Whether he could see something or not was unclear to the sights of the other two. However, he looked pretty confident as he pointed out into the distance and declared, "Aye, right out there's where the fennekin came from, yeah? Maybe they didn't just spawn in like a joke-maybe they came from somewhere. What say we go follow where they came from and see if we can get down to the bottom of anything?"
If nothing else, he wanted to know what was out there. His inquisitive brain was burning at the thought that there could be something more just waiting to be found if he looked just a little bit deeper into the professor's words. If nothing else, it was a way to spend this day before his nightly walk came around. That's why he began to walk in that direction with what some, like his own rowlett, would whisper to be reckless abandon for a group who just went up against nigh-sixty fennekin.
