OUT OF THE GAME Rowan has a lot of fond memories of their dad. He was always dad, never the grudgingly-mumbled father of classmates. Dad, or sometimes daddy when the world was bigger and scarier. He was there for every Christmas, and they lit the fireplace and dimmed the lights, and all sang songs and ate cookies. If he couldn't be there for Rowan's birthday, he called, loud and boisterous, and explained the city he was in, in meticulous detail, and it almost felt like Rowan was there too. He brought back gifts, and postcards, and recipes, and every summer they went to the Boardwalk, and ate sea-salt taffy and fresh fish and funnel cakes. He was gone, a lot of the time. An activist, driving around to help people all over. He was always like that, Rowan's mom said. Her voice was dismissive- she thought it foolish- but also incredibly fond. You're just like him always came next. Rowan can remember that day. It was Sunday, and they were in the den. They were on the couch, by the fireplace, watching tv. The sliding door beside led out to the backyard. The floor was hardwood, a soft shade. Mom and Dad had laid it themselves, after ripping up the carpet, an ugly curly-copper that Rowan missed. There was a box of Rice Krispies on the ground- Mom had rolled her eyes when Dad grabbed them at Costco, but bought them anyway- and Rowan had reached to take one. "What do you mean?" Mom's voice was sharp, stern. Not hysterical, even then. "Yes- Yes, that's his car. But-" A frustrated pause. "If there's no body, then you cannot definitively say-" And then the quiet. The slick leather of the couch. The crinkle of foil wrapper. "I- okay. Thank you." She hung up the landline, and turned to look at Rowan- and for an instant, before her face was solid and composed- There was a flicker of agony. No one ever found a body. After a month, Mom had the funeral put together. It felt like a torn, frayed edge, marked by what was missing. The funeral was a blur. People Rowan hardly knew all offering condolences. But then there was him- A tall, unfamiliar presence, who spoke to Mom for only a brief moment, face close to her ear. He left before anyone else. Something settled in Rowan, deep and solid. He knew something. But Rowan couldn't ask- they left Mom to her grief, and poured over their things. What Dad had given them. And, behind the aquarium hoodie and the state fair prize plush, was a Worldview.

INSIDE THE GAME hey Rowan! i've missed you a lot- i hope you're doing well! i've been playing this a lot, and it makes me think of you. there are a lot of kiddos running around, so you should be able to make friends. and if we're lucky, maybe we can hang out together even when i'm on the road! i've been trying something a little harder, since the reset (i'll tell you about it when i call on saturday). its been fun so far, so maybe you wanna try it!
