The abandoned city before Josh and Ares was unsettling. Every step he and his Pokémon took came with a clack or clink. While the Charmander was excited to run about the derelict roads, piers, and even rafters if they were able to get that high up, his trainer seemed less than thrilled, his heart racing in the dreadful ambiance. He double-checked the recommendations for exploring the Forgotten Nexus, and he met them, though barely. His muscles tensed as he heard the distant sound of a Pokémon cry he had never heard before. It sounded menacing... and almost alien, too.
"Josh! Josh! Come take a look at this!" Ares chirped, jumping up and down while teetering dangerously close to the edge of a balcony.
"Careful, Ares!" Josh chided his partner, reaching for him to lift him away from the edge. "What did you--" He noticed a strange keycard in his hand, after which a new notification scrolled across the top of his UI:
Information> New quest available: ABANDONED LABORATORY! Open the Quests menu for more details.
As was standard for quests, they required players to party up, and for good reason: the dangers inside would likely be very real. "Even if we were to scout the lab out by ourselves, Ares, we could wipe out pretty easily. Let's relax and come up with a course of action. That, and find hopefully someone a little higher level than we are."
"Whaddya mean?" the brazen Charmander replied. "We'll be fine!"
Shaking his head, he went into the main menu, into chats, and sent a message to the Ostellia quest recruitment chat:

As soon as she saw the "Looking For" request, it didn't take long for Aero to rush to the sender's location. While the lab looked scary to her, it wasn't enough to deter her from taking the quest. It has been a while since she interacted with another player, so she was excited to meet with them for it. Plus, wandering into the lab sounded like a haunted house attraction, so it would be extra fun to her.
After a few minutes of flying on her Braviary's back, Aero landed in the abandoned city where the abandoned laboratory was. She looked around the area until she noticed a blonde-haired man waiting with his Charmander by his side. "Oh, hey!!!" She called out while rushing to Josh and waving at him. "I heard you need a party for the quest. Can I join? I have a high-level Pokemon and I can fight with my Armorer class!" Josh Devlin

The sight of a Braviary with a young female on its back startled Josh and Ares. At first, he and his Pokémon were defensive, Embers dripping from the Charmander's mouth, thinking the duo were hostile. When she let out a cry to greet Josh, both dropped their guard. "You could have told me you'd be flying in on such a fierce Pokémon! I thought I was a goner!" Even Ares didn't find it funny like he would other similar situations; he knew he could have been in big danger, too!
A high level Pokémon would be perfect. "Of course you can!" If Aero offered Josh a handshake, he would happily accept it. Regardless, they would party up, Josh gasping at Aero's stats and those of his Braviary. The level difference was pretty stark. "Wow, you've been playing for a long time, haven't you?" he asked. "I've been playing for less than a month. Name's Josh, and I want to be UNOVR's greatest cavalier one day!"
Seconds after the party information appeared, several more alerts appeared at the top of Josh's UI:
Information> New Objective: Restore Power to the Laboratory Information> New Objective: Prepare the Lab for Future Renovations Information> New Objective: Retrieve 3 Diary Entries
"Looks like we've got our work cut out for us," Josh sighed. "Let's head on in. And keep your eyes out for nasties. I don't think this is going to be easy." With that, Josh and Ares walked across one of the metal beams leading to the lab entrance. Aero

Being the nice girl she was, Aero happily shook Josh's hand while her Braviary landed next to her and observed the new trainer and his Pokemon. "Oh, sorry about that. I didn't expect you guys to be shocked about Ruffy. But just in case..." She took out her Poke Ball and aimed it at her eagle Pokemon. "Thanks for your help! Return!" Ruffy frowned at this, yet he resigned as he let the red beam absorb him back into her ball.
Then when Josh commented on her long experience in the game, Aero sheepishly laughed. "I don't know if it's a big deal. I did a lot for my first few months and I haven't hatched my legendaries yet." Then when he introduced herself, her eyes widened at his last sentence. "That's awesome! I don't what cava-whatever means, but I think that's the same as my dream to travel around the game world with my Pokemon. So far, I haven't gone that far with this area since it was just released and I had a lot of offline things to do beforehand."
As the tasks arrived in her UI, Aero hummed when Josh warned of the "nasties" crawling. "Maybe we should try finding the diary entries first. If we do that, we can focus on the other two later," she said as she followed Josh into the lab. "How about we find a room where it has some files and folders like in those TV shows?"

Josh looked more impressed than anything. Having a Rufflet of his own, he knew how advanced Aero had to be to be able to ride a Braviary. "I can't wait until I'm able to fly like you can. Gonna be a long time, though," he replied, his eyes shifting to his meager level and stats. They would come in due time. "A cavalier is a mounted combat specialist. They fight from horseback, usually with polearms. In UNOVR, it would be from the back of a Pokémon." He had already settled on his build: Bolter for speed and Player for the ability to fight on his own.
Josh shook his head at Aero's suggestion. "It's probably gonna be too dark to see too much in there without turning the power on. If you have a Pokémon that gives off light, we can probably swing it." A Charmander's tail wouldn't cut it. He needed something brighter, like a Ponyta. Sure would have been nice to catch one from the Surge Steppes before coming all the way to Ostellia. Those were the breaks, though... Aero

Aero's eyes glimmered once she learned what cavalier was. "Hey! I'm already become one with Ruffy! I can also battle as myself, too!" And by "herself", she meant using her Armorer and Player subclass to battle alongside her Pokemon. But she doubted it might not be the right time to tell Josh that.
Looking at her UI that listed her current Pokemon, she frowned at the choices they have to act as a temporary light source until they achieve the first task. "There's Coco's Incinerate, but he might accidentally burn some stuff. Zuri can somehow see or hear in the dark, but I doubt he could help us if we can't see through it..." She groaned in dismay. "I guess we should find the power source then. I'm willing for risks, but I'm not playing needle in a laboratory hay stack." Josh Devlin

"Sounds like a winner," Josh answered. As he stepped inside the lab proper, the metallic clink of his steps against the floor echoing loudly, his in-game music stopped, only a horror-like ambient droll playing similar to what one would hear in a Metroid title. It made his hair stand on end... like something was going to jump him at any moment.
Many of the lab's electronic doors were frozen in place due to a lack of power. Many of the ones that weren't were mangled or blast open by brute force of some kind. One such door had been completely torn off. "What... what could have done this, Aero?" Josh asked. "To rip apart a metal door like that..."
Another door, this one closed, had a huge dent in it, like something had struck it in a precise location with a tremendous amount of power. "Hey, Ares, can you shine your tail by this door for a bit?" Josh asked.
"Sure, but why?" Ares replied, doing as ordered. Surrounding the impact point, a cut at the center of its dent, was evidence of electrical arcing, and strong arcing at that. If it could leave burns on metal, the strength of the current had to be out of this world.
"Aero, do you know of a Pokémon that attacks both with a whip and with electricity? I can't think of one." Aero

Despite the eeriness of the lab's dark interior, Aero was surprisingly calm during the trek. She would chalk up to Josh being with her or not flinching during horror scenes unless they're all about Rube-Goldberg-style unalive scenes. It wasn't until they saw a metal door completely torn off by force. She tried not to lose her composure as she hummed in thought. "There's no way an NPC or player with a Player subclass would do this. Maybe it might be a Pokemon or something worse..."
She shook off her fright for a while and turned to Josh again when she asked her if she has any Electric-type Pokemon or who can use a whip of sorts. Aero fell on all fours as if she was defeated and groaned. "Unfortunately, I didn't catch any Electric-type or any Pokemon with those traits," she answered in dismay. "I have a special item that can generate electricity. But I can only use it once in a battle, so I can't use it willy-nilly outside of it. And there's Ruffy who just got his Electric mod. But I doubt he can help us since he can't learn Electric-type moves naturally." Josh Devlin

Even the experienced, much higher-leveled Aero was clueless. Lovely. "Guess we're going in blind, then. Be really careful. Whatever did this is... powerful. Ares, turn up your tail to full power. We're gonna need all the light we can get." With a nod and a cry, the Charmander's tail flame grew in temperature and size. Even the fire-type himself began to sweat; it was clear he could not hold the extra luminosity forever. "Let's go in."
Taking a step into beyond the mangled door, there were glass shards scattered all over the large room. Good thing Josh was wearing good shoes! As crackling noises accompanied their footsteps, so did a different kind of crackling - that of electricity. A thunder-like explosion rocked the room, accompanied by an electric discharge that illuminated the thick wires composing a Xurkitree.
This was bad. Really bad.
With only two members in their party, the risk of a white-out was high. Perhaps an investment in some more Kindler class features would be warranted before returning, if their combined strength was not enough to take down the wire-framed Ultra Beast.
"What... what in the world is that?!" Josh cried, Ares' mouth dripping embers already... Aero

For the first time since the Zapdos raid, Aero froze in fear as she witnessed something truly unimaginable in a Pokemon MMO like UNOVR. Wires moving around like tentacles approaching the two trainers in a menacing fashion accompanied by electricity rampaging around them like lightning bolts. Regardless, she knew where those wires and electricity came from. The last time she saw them was in Pokemon Ultra Sun where she caught every Ultra Beast including the Poipole line. If she could calculate their strength via her current evolutions in the party, there was no way they could beat them right now.
"Something that's too early for us to face," Aero responded to Josh's fearful question. "I do have some Ground-types with me, but there's no way I can deal with that Pokemon alone!" She would try since the leveling system in UNOVR was almost non-existent, but she knew from her earlier losses back in Pokemon X's post-game that it would be reckless for her to fight Legendary Pokemon under-leveled. "But we have to turn the lights on if we want to move forward, so fleeing isn't an option."
If she knew anything from VR games, there was a chance they could do more than fighting or battling. She learned that from the Zapdos raid where she chose to cooperate with the raid boss rather than face it to complete it. "How about we turn this into a stealth mission? Try not to get the Electric Ultra Beast's attention while taking care of the power?" Josh Devlin

A stealth mission. Ugh. Josh didn't like stealth missions. But what choice did they have? They could take advantage of the low lighting. It was better than whiting out, though, which was likely to happen if they engaged the Invasive Species without a tactical advantage. "Sorry, Ares, but I need you to go back into your Poké Ball for now." The Charmander's jaw dropped as he was recalled, clearly unhappy with being taken out of the action. "The only issue is we might have to deal with it on the way back. But you're right. It's way too dangerous - see how its name is red in the HUD?" he asked. Perhaps Aero's settings were different, but Josh's color coded enemy names by threat level.
"We're gonna have to study its movement patterns if we want to get past it," Josh proposed, holding back in the shadows where they would be undetectable if a stray electric attack didn't strike too close to them. "Once we've figured it out, we try to get past it. Be ready to engage it, though. We might not have a choice in the end." Aero

While she was more imaginative than her classmates back in real life, Aero was the type to learn new things in order to complete a puzzle or level. As Josh said, they needed to observe the Ultra Beast's movements so they could find the opening needed to sneak past it. However, he also warned her to prepare for any battle ahead of them at the same time. She was confident when it came to type advantages, but she needed to remain cautious due to their current level gap. "Alright. I trust you on making the call, Josh."
She quickly took out her Poke Balls containing her Orthworm and Onix, the only Pokemon in her team who could handle the Xurkitree in terms of type advantage. Following Josh's suggestion, she quietly observed the Electric-type Ultra Beast with bated breath. She had a feeling she might break after a minute of observation, but she knew she couldn't break down right now. She wanted to survive this quest and she wanted to complete it at the same time. The Xurkitree's movements looked wholly unnatural, Josh flinching as it moved in ways any normal Pokémon could not. Even barring the electricity, those whips look like they hurt. Engaging it was looking like a worse option by the moment. All he could do was stay back and study how it moved.
There was a pattern, and after several minutes of observation, he had at last discerned it. "Looks like there's a window when it goes to those tanks on the right. Walk as fast as you can, but don't run. And try to keep an eye below you." Crushing a glass shard, kicking a canister out of the way... there were all kinds of ways they could make lots of noise and get dragged into a fight they were wholly not ready for. Aero

Walk, don't run.
It was a bit difficult for Aero considering her one-track mind. But they were facing against an Ultra Beast, so she couldn't afford to screw it up. Though she was a bit concerned about something "below" then. "Uh... sure. My feet will be as light as a feather," she whispered with a hint of concern.
Still recalling of Josh's warnings, the young trainer slowly followed the rider behind him quietly. She tried not to run on instinct as Josh suggested as she covered her mouth so she won't yell or scream as well. It was even to the point she avoided releasing her Pokemon by her side so they wouldn't disrupt their stealth mission. She did have her Pain Threshold turned off when she started the game. But knowing the threat Xurtxitree would pose, she didn't want to risk herself just to get to the window by running. It would be a little more until they could reach it.
She only hoped nothing bad would happen such as the Ultra Beast noticing them... Josh Devlin

Josh's study of the Xurkitree's patrol patterns proved vital in his survival; just as the electric alien turned away to face the ooze-filled tanks, he made a break for it, speed-walking across the lab floor. Had Aero had emoticons enabled in her HUD, she might be able to see a mystery icon as Josh opened the rear door leading to the power control room. Provided she followed Josh, the scour would breathe a bit sigh of relief.
"We're through... for now," he exhaled a second time. "It'll get suspicious once we turn the lights on, though. We gotta find those diary entries and see if we can lock the Xurkitree in that room somehow. There's no way we'll be able to get this place ready for use with that thing running around like a maniac. That, or just defeat it. I don't know how much of an option that is, given our levels, though..."
The Power Control Unit was just ahead. With the flip of a prominently-labeled lever, Josh and Aero could restore power to the entire facility. Aero
