Granmarg clopped next to Josh, the young man's hand at rest on the side of the horse as the two walked alongside one another. The greyed-out "Mount" icon taunted him as the duo crossed cracked street after cracked street. Clicking on it again seemingly out of boredom, a familiar error message popped up before him:
Error> This Pokémon has not yet been trained to serve as a mount.
Notably, only one error message, not two. After his last several adventures, he had at last reached reached the minimum level needed to hop on his Mudsdale's back. Once he returned from Ostellia back to Asper, one of the first things he would do would be procuring a saddle for Granmarg and learning how to ride. An equine was one of the easiest Pokémon to learn with, too.
As strange, almost alien-sounding noises reached his ears, a new alert scrolled at the top of Josh's UI:
Information> New quest available: END THE INVASION! Open the Quests menu for more details.
Having worked so well with Aero last time, they would be the perfect person to hit up for the task. "Hey Granmarg, can we stop and sit down for a bit? I need to message Aero real quick."
"Of course," the Mudsdale answered. "I appreciate the opportunity to rest my hooves. This concrete's hard on them."
With that, Josh sat down on a nearby bench intact enough to hold his weight, the ground-type sprawling out near him and relaxing. Entering his direct messages, he typed one up to Aero.
DIRECT MESSAGE> Hey Aero, I'm looking for a a partner to rout some Invasive Species from an office building in the Forgotten Nexus. I can forward you my coordinates if you're interested. Aero

While Aero loved to wander around the world of UNOVR, she noticed she hadn't gotten involved in many quests ever since the raid. She was relieved that she kept her Boon of Surging after everything she went through to protect Zapdos, but she hadn't found any quests and scenarios that would make her exploration senses itch. But then, she got a DM from a familiar name and when she heard of a quest involving "Invasive Species", she knew she had to accept it!
DIRECT MESSAGE> Yeah, I heard of those Pokemon from the forums. I want to see what they are in person. Give me those coordinates! I'm on my way!
If Josh sent them afterward, she quickly flew with her Braviary towards his location. After an hour, she found him and landed right in front of him. "100 point landing!" She exclaimed. "Hope you haven't waited too long!" Her Braivery screeched happily at the familiar face. "So what are we doing now? You said about the Invasive Species and that Nexus stuff." Josh Devlin

Thankfully for Josh, he didn't have to wait a terribly long time for Aero to show up. An hour was not a long time to wait, considering the great distance they were apart. He couldn't wait to be high enough level to sit astride a flying mount of his own. Riding horseback was at least possible in the real world. The real world had no flying animals capable of sustaining both themselves and a human on their back. This would be a completely unique experience, and he couldn't wait to get into the air! He would prefer something other than a Yanmega, though; while he could fly on Xira after evolution, the constant vibration would be a big adjustment at best, and make him sick at worst.
"I think we'll get more details once we party up," Josh explained as Aero's stats accompanied his in the bottom right corner of his UI. As if on cue, several more alerts scrolled across the top of it:
Information> New Objective: Distract Attention Information> New Objective: Gain Entry to Office Building Information> New Objective: Copy company memo and leave original Information> New Objective: Repel Invasive Species
"Again, looks like we've got a lot to do. The hardest part is probably going to be finding that memo before we get overwhelmed," Josh tried to prepare them both mentally for the work they were to do. While there might not have been a strict timer, the danger the duo would be putting themselves in was great.
As Josh turned a corner, a yellow caution message flashed in his UI:
Caution> Invasive Species detected within 1,000 units.
He was certain Aero received a similar alert. "Stay on your toes. I don't know anything about these Invasive Species other than that title. Gotta be ready for anything." Aero

As much as she wanted to make some quips before they could start the quest, she heard bad things about this area. She only read them through the forums, but this was the only place she had a bad feeling about this place. If she wasn't careful, then game over. For now, she simply nodded in response to Josh's suggestion. And once the tasks were posted on her UI, Arcana scrolled through them as she hummed in thought. "Then let's do the memo bef-"
Before she could finish, she gasped to see a new caution message on her UI. Upon hearing Josh's warning, she hummed again. "I doubt we can do this out of order with those guys breathing down on us. Let's distract them before heading inside." She took out her Poke Balls and frowned as she stared at her choices. "Problem is how are we going to do that without revealing ourselves? I can use Lollie's Hypnosis, but I don't know if they could fall for it..." Josh Devlin

"Let's get a bit closer first. See if we can identify any behaviors of these invasive species first," Josh suggested, withdrawing Granmarg for fear of his hooves being too noisy. In his place, Saber the Manectric appeared, a bark making his trainer jump. "Quiet!" Josh shout-whispered. "They'll hear us!" That "mount" button taunted him again. He knew that electric wolf could run, and far faster than Granmarg at that. He just lacked the levels needed to craft a saddle for such an advanced Pokémon. They would come in due time.
"If they're small enough, I have a Rufflet that can potentially blow them off their feet with a Tailwind. Otherwise, I don't think stealth is an option," Josh fake-lamented aloud. To him, stealth was a four-letter word. As many classic series as he was into, Metal Gear was not one of them. He would rather go in guns blazing, heroically ramming and trampling foes from the back of a super fast steed, and preferably with a polearm in hand to skewer those too large to be crushed underpaw.
"If they're too big, I can distract them with a Roar from Saber here," he suggested. Provided they followed his suggestion to get close for observation, another alert would pop up on their UIs:
Warning> Invasive Species detected with 500 units. Aero

Aero nodded before she followed Josh. She still has no idea what were the invasive species. But she has a few ideas. Either way, it would be better if they could see what it was before they could act. Speaking of which, she hummed when Josh suggested Tailwind and Roar. "Ruffy can use Tailwind, but he might be too big for it. Although Coco can use Roar," she suggested. "Also, Lollie also has Fake Tears. If stealth isn't an option, then we'll have her distract it to lower its guard before we can battle it."
Now that she thought about it, it has been a while since she caught a new Pokemon. She had Type: Null and Drampa with her, but even if she hatched her Legendary eggs, they might not be enough for this situation. She mentally reminded herself to start catching Pokemon if she could.
Warning> Invasive Species detected with 350 units.
Once she saw the warning, her expression grew stern and serious. "We might as well take a risk right here and now." Josh Devlin

"These all sound like good options," Josh nodded in agreement. "The office building in sight, but I don't see any--"
A loud, explosion-like sound rocked Josh's ears, a Buzzwole carrying an entire storage shed in its muscular arms smashing it to pieces against the ground. It even drowned out the aural warning associated with the red message on his UI:
Alert> Priority status alert. Invasive Species detected within 100 units. Combat imminent.
"It's... huge," Josh gasped. "I don't think there's any fighting something like that. We're gonna have to make a break for it. I'm gonna withdraw Saber and roll his Poké Ball next to it, so we can get past it. Withdrawing him in time is going to be the hard part, but it's the best way I have to distract it." While he wasn't sure about Aero, Josh felt like he or any of his Pokémon would be squashed in a single slam of the Buzzwole's fist. Aero

Aero nearly flinched upon hearing that noise coming from Buzzwole's mindless attack on the shed. She was shaking to her shoes at the sight of it. But she took a deep breath and turned to Josh. "Yeah... I think that's enough to KO my entire box. I don't want to think about battling it head-on as an Armorer." She then nodded after listening to Josh's plan. "Yeah, no objections here. I'm all for sneaking away than battling it. There's no way I can fight that Ultra Beast unless I have a high-level Pokemon or skill tree in my belt."
She shivered the thought of battling the Buzzwole. Aero had her first taste of defeat and she knew better to run away than letting her game logic take away her flight or fight logic. At this point, she stayed behind and let Josh do his thing. If something could go wrong, she had Ruffy's Poke Ball in her hand in case something would go wrong on his end. Josh Devlin

"We have little choice. I'm gonna have to use Saber to distract them," Josh dejectedly mused aloud, morbid vibes in his voice. He skillfully rolled Saber's Poké Ball beneath the Invasive bug, who promptly shot a paralyzing THUNDER WAVE at it. "Now, Aero!" Josh cried as soon as the Buzzwole turned around, the bug-type sinking its lengthy proboscis into Saber and bleeding him dry of life energy. The evolved electric wolf, downed in a single hit, returned to the trainer's Poké Ball. Provided Aero was able to keep up with him, they would be able to make it past the Buzzwole and slam the door shut behind them.
Information> OBJECTIVE A: COMPLETED Information> OBJECTIVE B: COMPLETED
The screen shake from the Buzzwole banging on the small office building was disorienting. One encounter with that Buzzwole could wind up squashing them flat. And it was a mission objective to repel the blasted thing. Josh breathed a deep sigh. "You got any Pokémon with healing moves handy?" he asked Aero. "We might need them. Once we find that memo, we're gonna have to engage the Buzzwole long enough to get it to run away."

As soon as Aero heard Josh's signal, she ran as fast as she could behind him. It was a good thing she was physically active both in-game and real-life enough to keep up with him. Eventually, she rolled through the door before slamming it close behind them. She could hear some banging behind the door, so she knew it wasn't over yet. It was only a matter of time before they could face it again, so they needed to finish the rest of the objectives before the Buzzwole could get to them first.
"My Snom and Blipbug are in Support and also have Buffs, too," she answered. "But I haven't leveled them enough to take care of bigger wounds. Not to mention I rarely use them in a real Pokemon battle that involves risking our lives." She quickly opened her menu while being aware of her surroundings. "I'll see what I can do before it happens. Don't worry, I think Ruffy and Lollie could handle them long enough to finish our goals. I hope..."
It was a bit of a false assurance since their levels were about 30, but there was no other choice in case a battle was ensured. Regardless, she was ready to use everything in her box and arsenal if they wanted to survive this quest. Josh Devlin

Josh's ears still rung after the impact; he couldn't have imagined how painful it would have been had he not elected to engage pain limiters. He would have been flattened by that thing were he a combat class. HP from full to zero in one attack. "Except we can't exactly get away from it. We still need to find the memo the quest is asking for. I think one of us is going to have to hold it off long enough for the other to get the work done."
Neither of the jobs was exactly easy. Finding an important note under stressful conditions would be challenging, particularly if the Buzzwole started rocking the office building with its fists. "You better with Pokémon or with computers?" Josh asked as the building's front door whizzed and whipped between the two, narrowly missing them both. Aero

A very good question. She would try getting a memo while Josh takes care of the Ultra Beast. But if it was computers, then she was screwed. Sure, she knew how to use them since she needed them for her homework and reading forums and wikis for UNOVR. But when it came to advanced ones, she was out of luck. Besides, she was only 13 in real life. How could she know about computers when she was still in middle school?!
"If we're talking about RL skills, I'm picking Pokemon." Aero sighed in dismay. "If I survive the Buzzwole attacks, you owe me a drink back in town." She then took out her Poke Balls as she prepared to release her Pokemon from them in battle. "Be careful, Josh."
If her partner headed off for the memo task, Aero threw the Poke Balls, releasing her Braivery and Gothitelle in the open. "Alright, you two. Let's distract that musclehead until Josh gets back with the memo." They backed away from the door while preparing themselves for what awaited behind it. Josh Devlin

Josh had to work fast. Aero was the more experienced combatant of the two, but after seeing the colossal damage the Buzzwole could deal, he expected even she wouldn't last long. With no Pokémon he could saddle, he was stuck on foot. Little did he know that the building interior disabled mounting in the first place. "Back as fast as I can!"
It would be as simple as finding a working terminal. While a few monitors were out of commission, there were plenty of working ones. He clicked the power button on one of the computers, and it hummed to life. Sitting down in the office chair, Josh felt a lump underneath the mousepad when he was presented with a login screen. Storing credentials in such an insecure space? The office building's employees must have had to evacuate suddenly. He wasn't going to look away from a gift Rapidash, though!
Signing in, he noticed a memorandum on the desktop screen. Opening it, he read on in horror:
9:38 12-01-XXXX
Urgent Memo For internal circulation only
It has come to management attention that a number of environmental irregularities are causing significant distress among the office staff.
Due to the irregular circumstances, the Pokemon League has issued a Stay at Home order, effective immediately.
Please return to your homes and continue work from there, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. The current recommended evacuation route is via Liberty Pier to the South.
We appreciate your continued efforts and hard work in this trying time.
Stay safe.
Josh copied the contents of the memo and sent it as a direct message to Aero. Sprinting toward the entrance, he had only hoped the young girl was able to hold off the Invasive Species long enough for the duo to make their getaway. Once it had been sent, a pop-up would appear on the top of both their HUDs:

"Ruffy! Use Tailwind!"
Aero's Braivery flapped his wings to create a gust of wind blowing behind their party. Josh's original plan was for Aero to distract the Buzzwole long enough for Josh to grab the note needed for the quest. She already had her experience facing against Legendary Pokemon such as Zapdos, but she knew she couldn't defeat it alone. She hoped that her Pokemon would be enough to weaken so Josh could escape.
"Now, Lollie! Use Psychic!" Her Gothotelle cried loudly as she attempted to blast the Fighting-type Ultra Beast with her psychic energy. When it happened, her HUD pinged as a DM popped up. She quickly read the contents and sighed in relief. But not before seeing her Pokemon's current state after witnessing the Buzzwole attacked them with several punches "Just hang in there, guys! Josh will be back any second now!"
But then, one of the Ultra Beast's punches almost hit the young trainer. While she managed to dodge it, Aero ended up landing on her butt as several Poke Balls strangely dropped from her inventory. One of them popped open and out came her Fuecoco. The small crocodile looked around curiously and started wandering around the battlefield. But it wasn't walking unnoticed as his trainer noticed him. "H-Hey, Fufu! Come back here! It's not safe here!" Josh Devlin

The objective completion message was a sign that Josh was on the way back. Dashing around each corner, he grew increasingly worried with every crash he heard. None of those noises could have been good: Aero had to be getting clobbered by herself out there.
By the time he returned, the unthinkable had happened: the Buzzwole threw a POWER-UP PUNCH at the young girl's Fuecoco in an effort to knock it out. Were it to get an opening, it would snatch the fire-type into its muscular arm. "Aero! Are you okay?!" he shouted, reaching for Ares' Poké Ball. "Ares, light that bug on fire!" he ordered, the Charmander quick to whip a volley of EMBERS toward it using his tail.
