Franka squints at the various docile, decorative Pokemon wandering around on and near the path just outside Briarbane. She's already tried to "encounter" one by moving towards it, but nothing happened. They truly are just for show. Weird! Is this all wild Pokemon are in this game? What's up with that? she wonders to herself. Seems like a step backwards, in her eyes.
No, can't be! She must just be doing it wrong. Briskly walking towards the nearest wee beastie, she does her best to seem confrontational and intent on getting into a fight. The set-dressing Skwovet turns tail and behaves like a real squirrel would, scurrying away to the elevated safety of the nearest tree. Franka lets out a frustrated grunt and keeps pursuing. Her path leads her right into the tall grass... and into the scripted Porygon Jumpscare.
Startled, Franka leaps backward, brandishing her Snivy's Poke Ball, but quickly realizes the digital duck is just here to deliver a tutorial spiel. Feeling silly, she exhales and settles in to listen closely, like someone who has no idea what they're doing would.
...That resolve lasts for about thirty seconds. Franka's eyes start to wander out of boredom. As she glances around, she spots another player moving nearby, and waves in their direction! If this is anything like the other tutorial quests, it's going to require the buddy system to get any further, so she figures she might as well try and get the attention of this potential partner now. "Hallo over there! Do you have time to help me with this quest?" she calls out.

It was not that she was complaining about having to walk all the way back to the settlement from the Noonlight Shrine. Rigorous exercise was part of her training, and a light one-hour walk through a pleasant woodland grove was something even a high schooler could probably do without much trouble.
She just wasn't expecting company.
Momo froze, too startled at being called out to move or even react for a moment. To all eyes, she appeared to be a cute, fashionable teenage girl, the type of person you'd expect to see drinking fancy tapioca drinks with her friends on Instagram. She had no idea how to react to the svelte, well-dressed woman who suddenly called out to her.
"I-I-I," she sputtered, cheeks turning red, "Well, it's no trouble, I guess. Yes. I can help."
<Welcome, MOMO. Welcome, FRANKA> buzzed the digital assistant hovering in the grass. Sensing a newcomer, it promptly restarted its tutorial spiel over from the beginning. <Ready to catch your first Pokémon? It's as easy as one, two, three!>
The girl dropped into a basic defensive stance, relaxed but stable, one hand raised to protect herself from the monster surely about to erupt from the grass. "Can you fight?" she asked Franka, tone deadly serious. You would almost think this was Street Fighter VR instead of Pokémon.

Franka raises an eyebrow and shifts her grip on her Poke Ball. "I... guess we're about to find out!" she replies, forcing a laugh, as a Patrat leaps out of the tall grass obligingly!
Franka throws her Poke Ball, not towards the wild Pokemon, but straight down, as if she's a ninja trying to smoke-bomb away. It lands at her feet, and out comes a Snivy, who glances in Momo's direction before noticing the wild Pokemon and shivering. "What? Right away? O-okay boss." Timidly, Lash takes a step forward, curling her little leaf-hands into trembling fists.
And not doing anything else. The Patrat eyes her curiously.
Franka glances in Momo's direction, a faint helpless smile on her face. "Uh, I guess she's a little nervous. D'you mind going first while I calm her down?" She drops to one knee and strokes Lash's head encouragingly.

"Got it," Momo said with an affirmative nod. She turned to her opponent: a Patrat, something like a giant rat. It made the girly part of her brain want to scream and recoil. Momo quickly tried to mentally reclassify it: an extra-large hamster. Yes. Hamsters were cute. They were kind and gentle pets. She could surely defeat it.
When had she lost confidence in her own abilities?
"HI-YAAAH!" She moved like oiled lightning, dropping low to the ground to match the ratHAMSTER's short stature. In a single fluid, circular motion, she bodily seized the Pokémon by the shoulder and slammed it down to the--
She stopped. The Patrat was yelling something incoherently, face shoved deep in the grass. She felt... silly. "It's not so strong," Momo admitted cautiously, cheeks turning a bit pink again. "I think your grass Pokemon can defeat it."
She released the Patrat and stepped back, falling back into her stance (just in case). <Try practicing your Pokémon Attacks on the wild Pokémon! You can access your Pokémon's move list from the drop-down menu,> prattled the tutorial guide in the background. Momo hadn't actually known that, actually-- that might have saved her a lot of trouble if she'd known earlier on.

Franka's eyes go wide with surprise and alarm as Momo simply lunges into action herself. Lash squeaks out a noise that sounds almost like a stifled laugh, as what happens next isn't even a contest. The Snivy briefly smirks at the pinned Patrat, but it's gone as quickly as it appears and she's back to her trembling fighting stance.
"Well, okay!" Franka says after a moment, unable to keep the laugh out of her voice. "Looks like you can take this one." Standing, she navigates the menu with one hand. "Go on, Lash! Use Tackle!" she commands, at the same time. With a flourish, she turns the finger-tap of her selection into a dramatic point.
"You got it," Lash replies, charging forward with none of her prior apprehension.
Franka giggles. She's already living that Pokemon Trainer fantasy.

It was perhaps a year ago now that Momo had gotten her own starter Pokemon, and immediately headed for the (at that time) most challenging area of UNOVR to test her skills. She had not stopped by Mom's house. She had not delivered any package. And she had not done the Catching Tutorial.
Instead, she had thrown a terrified Pokémon out into the wilds, and told it to prove itself. The results had been... disappointing.
As she watched Franka's Snivy face off against the weak hamster monster, Momo was reminded of Kusa. His failure. No: her failure, to teach him, to inspire him, and to support him. Realizing the Treecko would never be battle-ready had been part of the reason Momo had fallen off UNOVR to begin with-- that, and the constant threat of entrance exams looming in her daily life.
But perhaps it was not that he was hopeless. Perhaps he just... needed to start small.
"I could use a Pokémon too, I guess," Momo said, hesitating. "But he's... anyway. Kusa, come out."
Momo's starter Treecko materialized in the grass next to Lash, looking around. At the sight of the Patrat, other battling starter, and Catching Tutorial guide, he let out a wail of what could only be described as betrayal.
<You promised I wouldn't have to do this anymore!>
"Shhhh!" Momo hissed, red-faced again. She didn't dare look at Franka - what would the new trainer think of her? She must look inept. "Please just do your best..."

Franka claps her hands together with unusually childish glee as Lash rams into Patrat. "Good job! You really got them that time. Again!"
"What? Another Tackle? I know Vine Whip, you know," Lash pants. "I could be playing to my strengths here," she adds, sounding a little sullen.
Franka winces, glancing Momo's direction, but she seems preoccupied with her miserable Treecko. "We're trying to catch it, not beat the stuffing out of it," she mutters back, menuing.
"Heh! I guess you got me there, boss," Lash smirks, and attacks again.
Meanwhile, Franka's edging closer to Momo and poor Kusa. She does another sequence of hand gestures through her UI, turning her cosmetic Subclass effects back on, and a pleasant floral scent begins to waft through the area. She squats down next to Kusa with an encouraging smile. "Aw, sweetie, don't worry. You'll be okay." Her gaze flicks up to Momo. "He's shy too, huh?"
Lash's smirk vanishes, reminded that she's supposed to be playing meek by Franka's statement. She adopts a slightly less confident fighting stance.

Kusa took a deep breath, relaxing slightly in response to the pleasant aroma. <N-no I won't!> he sniffed, <This is just another gateway into 'more training!' I don't want to do it, so there!>
"I suppose so," Momo said to Franka, clamping down hard on her emotions. More like 'crybaby,' she thought, now irritated on top of being embarrassed. 'Shy' was cute, like a little boy hiding behind his mother's legs when he met you for the first time. Kusa was like the little boy throwing a screaming fit on the doorstep because he didn't want to go to swimming lessons.
Seeing Franka treat the grass-type so kindly had triggered a knee-jerk reaction in Momo. Resentment.
This is just the way things are.
One did not complain. One did not make a fuss. One did not wish for things they were not destined for. Those were behaviors which should be eliminated, not rewarded with compassion.
But she'd tried that before, and failed.
"You should at least know how to defend yourself," Momo said stoically, giving no hint of her inner turmoil. "This world is not safe. You cannot always hide from your problems - sometimes you must face them head-on."
<You're one to talk!> gulped Kusa angrily. He swiped with his leafy tail at the Patrat, just trying to keep it at bay more than any kind of coordinated attack. He hid behind Lash, covering his head. <Help!>

Ah. It's a little more complicated than that, then. Franka stands back up, brushing grass off of her knee. "Wow, this one is sure quick, huh?" she says, laughing nervously to try and break the tension as the Patrat dodges yet another attack. "Sure, alright. Lend him a hand, why don't you, Lash? Or should I say--" her finger punches through the menu option for Wrap -- "A vine?"
"Sure, boss, I can do that." Tossing a smug grin back at the cowering Treecko, Lash darts around the Patrat before they can react, vines unfurling from her neck frill.
The vines close around Patrat, constricting and restricting their movement. "Not again!" they cry, squirming.
Lash just snickers. "Here, take your best shot, buddy. I'll hold 'em still for you."

Choking down her frustration, Momo watched as, blow-by-blow, the Snivy whittled down the enemy hamster. The Patrat was uncoordinated, its counterattacks wild and flailing. Momo knew she could have overpowered it in an instant if she battled herself, but where was the lesson in that? What would Kusa learn from having his battles fought for him?
It seemed she didn't have much choice. Kusa was stubbornly, resiliently committed to his choice. Why did I think he would change? Momo wondered. Perhaps I have been away from this game for too long. She'd grown complacent, and forgetful.
"Kusa, return. It's okay, do your best next time," she said, half in Japanese, and turned to Franka. Her Treecko vanished back into the ball, his wailing cries disappearing with him. She gave a stiff bow, as if someone had snapped her in half at a right angle. "I am sorry for the... behavior. It is my fault."
<Looks like the Wild Pokemon is at low health!> beeped the digital assistant. Momo jumped, startled. She'd forgotten it was still there. <Throw a Pokeball to catch it!>
She did not want the hamster, but she wanted to look like a good example for Franka, so the schoolgirl did as instructed. The capsule flew through the air, capturing the Patrat. <Up to two copies of any Wild Pokemon may be captured!> buzzed the assistant helpfully, <So don't worry about 'stealing' catches from your friends! Everyone can have fun on UNOVR!>
Momo was not here to have fun. Momo was here to test herself. And she was, constantly, tested, though never in the way she expected.
