At last, Josh and his team were strong enough that they could tank a few hits without being completely destroyed by Duraludon and other nasties in Asper. Comfortable with branching out into more recently-added territory with higher-level spawns, he made his way back to Ostellia's desert, but nowhere close to that creepy theme park. Even if it was running, there was no way he would sit in the saddle of any creature on a carousel in the middle of the Corruption. He knew that the toxic atmosphere did to Granmarg, putting him out of commission for days.
He really needed to get a backup steed, didn't he? Thankfully for him, Raiden was on the cusp of evolving into a Zebstrika. Just one more level, and he would have his first electric mount... and one that was quite fast, too. That on its own would take plenty of getting used to.
The original plan was to ride toward the northern gate. As Granmarg galloped around the deserted municipality's walls, he suddenly reared without a command, frightening Josh and making his knuckles turn white from holding on for dear life. "What's up, buddy?" he asked the horse.
"I already went in there once, Josh," Granmarg answered, "and I'm not going in there again if I can help it. If you want to go for a run, I would prefer the south side of town."
It was a stern answer, but a polite one. As stubborn as the ground-type was, at least he wasn't terse about it. With the change of plans, Josh went into the main menu and pulled his friends list up. He located Alicia Westfield on the list and began composing a message to her:
DIRECT MESSAGE> Change of plans, Alicia. Granmarg's skittish of the Corruption Zone, no doubt due to the Mistra nonsense. I'll be on the south side of the Dune District, waiting for you. Try to get here before the wind picks up big time.

Alicia was quite thankful that, after the nonsense with the Duraludon she admittedly was quite foolish in jumping into combat with and the Mistra insanity, she had gone on something of a spree. Not a shopping spree, exactly, but a training one. Tikani was good, but she needed to get the beast sheâd acquired with Joshâs help up to speed. The poor leaf dinosaurâs move pool still held her back unfortunately, even at the best of times. ⌠Though she had discovered, much to her frustration, that the wild spawnâs spamming of Metal Claw was indicative of a problem in newcomer Giyunâs move pool as well. But one that wasnât nearly as detrimental to the armor-clad dragon. Either way, her efforts have gotten her Pokemon accelerated to a respectable point, though her lack of variety in party members meant her own personal level was still quite low in comparison. Then again⌠Joshâs wasnât exactly that far along yet either, right? It was an exhausting several days, for them and for her. But it was worth it. She was more prepared then ever, enough that she felt comfortable poking around this more recent content despite the level disparity. As long as she was careful at least. So when the message came in, she grinned. "Whoâs âat, Boss?" Giyun grunted out as Alicia read the message, lumbering along beside her. âA⌠friend. Weâve had a hard moment but⌠weâre working through it. Our meet up with him was why I went training crazy with you and Tikani.â"Issat right? Good ta know itâs gonâ pay off soon then." Giyun ground out as the two picked up their pace. DIRECT MESSAGE> Roger that. Donât blame him at all. Tikani chewed my ear off for what felt like hours after that accursed trip... Anyways weâre actually not that far away. Should see you in 15 mins tops! Got the new guy we took down together a while back with me (So donât panic =P). Looking to see how we fair after⌠never mind, not finishing that thought.Reply composed and fired off, Alicia made the run with Giyun. While quietly swearing that she was going to get something she could ride after this. As much as it got the blood pumping to be running about like this, it got tiring after a while! But sheâd make her timing and meet up with Josh in the time frame she mentioned. Josh Devlin

Fifteen minutes tops was right. Those RUNNING SHOES sure let her run fast. It still wasn't as fast as a PokĂŠmon could gallop, but it was impressive for a player to be able to run so fast on their own accord. Yes, it was tiring, but riding was also tiring. It just stretched and stressed a different set of muscles.
Combat Log> Stakataka readies Rock Blast.
By the time she got there, an Invasive Specimen had already skittered its way toward Josh. Disguised as part of a small, abandoned building, it was easy for the... thing... to jump them from behind. A barrage of five ROCK BLASTS flung Josh out of the saddle, repeated flashing making his head heavier. And it wasn't just because of the CRITICAL HITS to the now-downed Granmarg. Photosensitivity or no, it was just harsh on the eyes to look at. He would need to adjust some settings after escaping.
"Run! Go!" Josh urged, grateful he had his pair of RUNNING SHOES to flee the Stakataka with. It was so strange to be fleeing on foot after being so reliant on his PokĂŠmon for fast travel.
Combat Log> Escaping... Combat Log> You successfully escaped. Alicia Westfield

Alicia had been all too ready to greet Josh. Had even gotten her hand up to wave to him once sheâd gotten close enough. But she had just caught the brief movement out of the corner of her eye. There was no time to warn him. In a series of critical strikes both rider and horse were downed, and the horse wasnât getting back up again. âBoss!?â Giyun rasped in alarm, his eyes wide. He didnât know the other pair very well, but Mudsdale were stocky, sturdy looking Pokemon. For one to go down that easily⌠âWay ahead of you!â Alicia answered Joshâs urging, as the three of them beat feet away from the⌠living rubble. âWhat the hell was that anyways!? I dropped mainline at Gen 5 and I sure as heck havenât seen that thing in a side game before!ââWhatever it was, it sure feels alien!â the Duraludon griped out once they had some distance. âProbably the pointâŚâ Alicia mused to herself. She really shouldâve looked up what Pokemon existed in total so she at least had an idea of what all could be running around. Her sense and desire for adventure and discovery were going to get her into trouble she couldnât get out of at this rate⌠Josh Devlin

"No idea," Josh added. He had only played the base Generation 7 games himself, and none of their postgame, where these species came from. Its multiple eyes were nothing short of terrifying. He was used to bugs' compound eyes, but not hundreds of simple eyes, the Stakataka truly having omnidirectional vision. "But I want nothing to do with it," he said as he clicked open Saber's PokĂŠ Ball. "More levels can't get here fast enough so I can actually have a backup mount." More levels would also help with survivability, but that was the point.
"I'm hoping that was just a freak accident. If everything here's this powerful, then we don't stand a chance," he concluded. While the creatures were few and far between, each one was dangerous. Very dangerous. "We'll have to gauge it by the--"
Combat Log> Naganadel readies Fell Stinger.
"JOSH, LOOK OUT!" Saber yelled, diving in front of him to protect his trainer from the swooping Naganadel's FELL STINGER. With a high-pitched, unnatural-sounding squeal, the Manectric was downed in a single hit. Fully-orchestral boss music played as a meter appeared in the top right corner of Josh's UI:
BOSS |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| [][][][][][][]
Combat Log> Naganadel's Attack maximized! Combat Log> Saber has fallen.
"Boss?!" Josh gasped. "Is this even escapable?" Before he could say any more, a large prompt obscured his vision, and could not be dismissed until he answered it.

âLovely, weâre both in the deep end here. At least Iâm fairly confident of its typing. Despite their alien nature, they still seem to follow some aspects of design philosophy.â Alicia sighed out with a grin. They were both in for some discovery. And discovery had some hard knocks for them now. âAnd yeah, I thought Iâd had a long enough training session with my two teammates to risk poking around in here. But, uh, that was a heck of a surprise.âAnd then the prompt that there was another threat swooping in. Joshâs Manectric dove to save him, and was promptly KOâd as well. And then a terrifying pop up you never wanted to see on a boss battle popped up. The insectoid monsterâs attack power had been maximized. And Josh was now down two members. But⌠if she had the right read on the Beastâs typing. âGiyun, show time!â The hero wannabe called out as she interposed herself between Josh and the Naganadel. The music was pounding, a mad grin appeared on her face, and her blood pumped in excitement. She was confident, she could take this thing on. âJosh, take this chance to found out if we can run from this fight, Giyun and I will keep its attention!ââAh jeez.â Giyun groaned, but obediently went up to metaphorical bat. But he could tell what Alicia was thinking. His defenses were solid, and the Naganadel went to the effort of increasing its Attack stat. > Giyun readies Iron Defense > Giyunâs Defense rose sharply!âPick on someâun ya own size!â the Duraludon roared in taunting challenge as he charged at the Naganadel in an attempt to grapple with the Ultra Beast. "On it!" Josh replied, running to the edge of the combat zone as he hurled Ulysses' PokĂŠ Ball toward the Naganadel as a distraction.
Combat Log> Ulysses readies Icy Wind. Combat Log> Naganadel readies Fell Stinger.
An ICY WIND blew from the Seel's horn, Josh's PokĂŠmon promptly lowering it in the Naganadel's direction. While the Ultra Beast's speed was hampered by the arctic chill, its dragon-like wings continued to beat at the pace of an insect. It outmaneuvered Josh's mostly stationary ally, its rear FELL STINGER piercing straight through the layer of blubber like it was butter. The attack had inflicted so much damage that the damage numerals overlaid on top of the Seel were of a larger font size than Josh was used to. The damage was enough to KO him several times over.
Combat Log> Naganadel's agility reduced! Combat Log> Naganadel's attack limit reached. Combat Log> Ulysses has fallen.
Not wanting to see any more, he stepped outside the combat zone line, a bar on top of the screen slowly filling up. "Seems possible to escape if you can stay far away from it!" Josh called out, Alicia distracting the Naganadel enough for him to be able to flee. "Hold down the fort while I head to a Shrine and back!" he cried, beating feet. This was why he needed a backup mount... Alicia Westfield

âIâve got this! Just get your team healed up!â Alicia called back. It was time to survive against all odds. To hold the line despite overwhelming force. Typical hero stuff as it were. She pulled Tikaniâs pokeball. She was going to need some support from her starter. With Josh temporarily removed from the battle, the max-power Naganadel was fully focused on her team. She could see Giyun tense nervously. âLetâs cut that beastâs attack down to size while Josh is away, shall we?â Alicia asked with a grin. Giyunâs own smirk was a bit forced, but anything to keep the Naganadel from obliterating everyone when Josh got back was good in his book. > Giyun readies Breaking Swipe > Naganadel readies Fell StingerThe sting had been so effective, she wasnât surprised that the Ultra Beast was going ham on using it since it kept its attack stat at full power. But Ulyssesâ parting Icy Wind was just the control Alicia and Giyun needed. The Ultra Beast was slowed enough that Giyun was able to blunt the blow with a powerful swing of his arm, deflecting the Ultra Beastâs aim. > Naganadelâs Attack fell!By the time Josh would get back, the Naganadel would have vines wrapping around it, glowing as they sap its strength and pass it to Giyun. Giyunâs armored body would be shimmering brighter than ever. And the beast would look harried, losing a not-insignificant amount of its bonus attack power. Sheâd done well staying alive in the face of such overwhelming strength. Josh Devlin

Josh was running himself, and his mount, ragged as they galloped across the sands of Ostellia at full speed. Learning the timing of exactly when the horse's Sprint meter filled, he slammed his knees into Granmarg's sides again. In any other situation, the Mudadale would have protested. This was an emergency, though; every second counted.
Were Alicia Westfield to see their return, she might have been able to see speed trails surrounding mount and rider, the cavalry coming to her rescue. As soon as he re-entered the combat zone, the BOSS lifebar reappeared at the top of his UI, along with a change of music.
BOSS ||||||||||||||||||||| [][][][]
Information> Combat mode activated.
Combat Log> Raiden readies Spark. Combat Log> Naganadel readies Venoshock.
As Josh hurled Raiden's PokĂŠ Ball toward the Ultra Beast, his eyes glanced at both the enemy and ally health gauges. "You... you're something else. You're a Super Player, aren't you?" he asked Alicia. It was a reference that may have gone over her head if she wasn't a retro enthusiast. "Maybe you should be protecting me with your anime protagonist powers," he half-joked as the Blitzle tromped toward the flying Ultra Beast with a SPARK attack intended not to inflict harm, but to overload the Naganadel and make its movements even more sluggish than they already were.
Raising its long stinger, the Ultra Beast pumped a surge of venom toward Tikani and Raiden both. It was a good thing that they had avoided being poisoned so far; such a VENOSHOCK could have proven to be an instant knock-out blow otherwise! Alicia Westfield

The distant thundering of Granmargâs hooves had to be the sweetest sound sheâd heard all day at this point. She risked the small glance back to see the one-man cavalry charging in to reinforce her position. Sheâd focused all the efforts of her team on surviving first and foremost. Certainly with Tikaniâs Leech Seed she chipped away at Naganadelâs HP little by little as time went on. But she couldâve done a lot more damage if she really tried to. Of course, there was the comment Josh made which caused her to grin. She just had to fire back with a comment that she knew heâd understand. âFloating coins have never been so satisfying.â Lonely gamer with internet access and no compunction against alternative means of acquiring old games was a perfect recipe for pulling up retro games. But then the Naganadel took the moment to remind her that there was still a battle going on. The incoming Venoshock was about to be a problem. âGiyun!ââI hear ya!â The Duraludon called back, thundering steps echoing as he tried to cut off the stream of activated poison. He wasnât fully successful, but he did block most of the spray with his shimmering body and Steel typing. âTikani, screens up for the Blitzle! Giyun, time to go on the attack!â Alicia added with a grin. Time to take this boss down, especially as Raidenâs Spark did some work regarding the Naganadelâs speed. âRight!â> Giyun readies Dragon Claw > Tikani readies Light Screen
> Raidenâs Special Defense improved.
> Naganadel readies Dragon PulseA shimmering barrier formed around Raiden as Tikani focused despite the struggle with the Venoshock. It also extended the fields that Giyun and her already had up from earlier. Alicia grimaced as the Ultra Beast swept its pulse attack around. It was starting to either get angry or desperate, and she wasnât sure which one was worse. Giyun let out a roar as he rushed the largely disabled beast, claws gleaming with a similar energy that Naganadel was blasting around. He grunted as he caught some of the blast, wincing as he pushed through to score the scathing strike with his claws. âFar as I can tell, itâs definitely Dragon type. Betting on Poison being the other typing. It started throwing out these Poison and Flying Special Attacks when Giyunâs defense was maximized, itâs attack power was chipped away, and I brought Tikani out for support. The Dragon Pulse is new though.â the hero wannabe explained quickly, hoping Josh would be able to make use of the information. Of the Pokemon sheâd seen in Joshâs team, Granmarg was the most ideal for confirming the second typing. But if his energy was depleted in the gallop back to the fight⌠> Naganadelâs energy was drained
> Giyunâs HP recovers > Tikaniâs HP recovers > Raidenâs HP recoversLeech Seed, Alicia added mentally as the vines clinging to the Ultra Beast sapped its strength once more, was one of the best moves around if you could afford the move slot. Josh Devlin

Though they were all made before Josh was even born, there was something charming about pre-2000 video games. They were technological marvels, too; it was unreal how an expansive, 20 to 30 hour role-playing game could fit in a single megabyte. There would be time to reflect on that later, though; the bright flash from Alicia Westfield 's CRITICAL HIT was a sign that the battle was slowly turning around.
Combat Log> Naganadel readies Enrage.
The overlaid "CHARGE TIME 0" in front of the Ultra Beast's model made Josh's heart skip a beat or two. Their foe's attacks would come at them much faster, what with them no longer having any cooldown whatsoever. That deadly stinger would come at the duo rapid-fire. Though it lacked speed, it made up for the loss with sheer ferocity.
Combat Log> Naganadel readies Fell Stinger. Combat Log> Granmarg readies Hi Horsepower.
Gulping, the rider withdrew Raiden, slid off Granmarg, and commanded his steed to do battle with the Naganadel. "You better be right, Alicia. Because if this doesn't work, we're probably party wiping. For real this time." The Mudsdale leaped toward the poison-type in dramatic fashion, the HI HORSEPOWER of his hooves meeting his foe's FELL STINGER simultaneously. Alicia Westfield

âOh, thatâs not good.â Alicia muttered with some concern. She put up a good front so far, but after that Dragon Pulse her team was in bad shape. She didnât have much gas left in the metaphorical tank. And from prior experience today, she seriously doubted Josh could pull off holding the line against this Naganadel the way she did. Especially not now that it was enraged. She wouldâve struggled if the beast had attacked this furiously when she was alone. But then the sweet, sweet sound of a Super Effective hit rang out as Granmarg collided with the Naganadel. Alicia couldnât help herself, she pumped a fist in victory. âTold you they still followed some prior design logic! Giyun, think youâve got enough left for a finishing blow!?âââM smartinâ afta that last un, BossâŚâ Giyun answered with a pained huff. Alicia couldnât help but nod in agreement. That Dragon Pulse sweep had done a number. It had blasted Giyun badly, and poor Tikani had gone down almost as an after thought to a Critical Hit from the beast. âCome on then.â the hero wannabe encourage gently, before rushing in. With a skip and a jump, she launched herself up on to Giyunâs shoulder and kneeled down. Resting a hand on her dragonâs neck, she prepared herself. âWhatever happens in this next exchange⌠we face it together.âGiyun risked a moment to send a panicked glance to Alicia. There was no way that could be considered a proper riding spot. The amount of balance and coordination it would take to stay on just from him moving was high. If he actually took another bad hit⌠But he could see the determination in her eyes. They must be closer than he thought. âYer certifiable, Boss.ââMaybe,â Alicia agreed. Giyun roared and engaged one more time. His energy was at an all time low though, so a Dragon Claw was out of the question. > Giyun readies Metal ClawâCounting on you to finish it if this goes south, Josh!â Alicia called back as they charged. Even if he was exhausted, Granmarg should be able to muster up one last Bulldoze, shouldnât he? Even if he couldnât, a decent Ice attack from Ulysses would likely be enough too. She could taste the victory with how close they were. > Naganadel readies Air SlashThe Ultra Beast roared as the winds began to howl in its wings, forming nearly invisible blades. Alicia could tell Giyun would reach it first, the Speed drop and Paralysis were still hampering it. It was just a matter if she would see the end of this fight. She dearly hopped she would. It would make things all the sweeter. Josh Devlin

Josh got the bad news, too: with Giyun's life bar shrinking to what looked like nothing. He didn't expect either of them to last too much longer after the AIR SLASH ravaged their entire party - Granmarg included. With how rapidly the Naganadel was attacking, the Mudsdale had been struck down. After his model faded from the field of battle, a pop-up stopped the action cold.
Information> All members of the active party have fallen. Please replace the fallen party members with one or more reserve members.
There would be no time to throw in a healer. With the Naganadel on its last bar, Josh had to make a push now. The risk, of course, would be Ulysses surviving the rapid-fire stings he would almost certainly have to endure to get a single ICY WIND off.
Combat Log> Naganadel readies Fell Stinger. Combat Log> Ulysses readies Icy Wind.
The stings came fast as a volley of jabs from a seasoned martial artist, the damage numbers cascading so quickly that they overlapped one another. Ulysses' lifebar emptied at a sickening rate. He barely managed to get the attack off before another sting would have downed him. This better be the finishing blow. Otherwise, they might be whisked back to Thunderfall Shrine empty-handed...

By the time she had finally returned after her white out, it was safe to claim that Alicia was thoroughly exhausted. Unlike the heroic reinforcement charge Josh had engaged in amidst the fighting, the pinkette Gardener was thoroughly out of breath. âThat⌠is IT! I swear⌠to all that is holy⌠that Iâm getting a âmon⌠I can RIDE ON⌠It was a cool adventure before, but this is absurd! ⌠I have no idea what exactly Iâm going to find that Iâll be able to ride this quickly, but mark my words!â Alicia declared as powerfully as she could while heaving for air. âBut Iâm thoroughly pleased we managed to take this thing down, even if there were some rough spots.â⌠They could catch this beast, right? She was remembering that correctly, yes? Alicia took the moment to recover as she looked for any indication that Josh was going to do so, or had already done so. âThough Iâm not going to lie. I was worried it was going to mop you up even despite my last ditch attempt to keep its attention off of you. That was crazy hard.â Alicia admitted with a huff. Josh Devlin

Combat Log> Ulysses has fallen.
The ICY WIND and FELL STINGER struck at the exact same time, to the frame, creating a large amount of lag in the Combat Log's text appearing. The game slowed to a crawl from the animations slowing down as the final blow emptied the Naganadel's lifebar. This was intended behavior. What was not intended behavior was the slowed animations continuing. There was no victory fanfare, either: simply the GAME OVER screen, as though he were being sent to the Everworld. What made things even stranger was he could still move about, though at a sluggish pace. Was he dead? Was he alive? It was impossible to tell.
To make things even creepier, the congratulatory text for defeating a boss flickered alongside the GAME OVER logo. Was this part of the corruption, too? Perhaps a logout and login would fix it. Either way, Josh wasn't turning this catch down. He reached for his Golden PokĂŠ Ball, hurling it toward the Ultra Beast like a fastball. It was anything but, seeming to crawl through the air. If it was just him slowed down, maybe Alicia Westfield would be back in time to make her own catch. If it wasn't... then he would have a major bug report on his hands.
