It was truly unfortunate that they hadn’t had the time to recover like she would’ve wanted. But even wounded, Giyun was arguably one of the strongest Pokemon they had available. He was certainly the sturdiest. The sound of whipping strikes drove home just how massive their target was. And once they breached into the final chamber, she was not happy with what they came across. For a couple reasons. Her first thought when she managed to get a good look at the wire creature was ‘… wow, I want one!’ And then it’s Power Whip finished Giyun off. That wasn’t good. Well, even heroes could consider pulling out and coming back fresh. “Perhaps a tac-“And then their chance of retreating was promptly cut off by a grinding mess of steel getting lodged into the doorway. “Never mind.” Alicia finished with a grimace. She only had one more ally right now. And with the pop-up that explained what the Discharge did, she was wary. ”Aces in the back if possible! Lead with weaker Pokemon to soften it up!” Alicia called, glaring as she brought Tikani out again. ”AH! What the-!?” Tikani yelped. ”Sorry Tikani! Giyun’s down, you’re all I have left! Set up a REFLECT as soon as the others choose their Pokemon, this thing’s Power Whips are brutal!” Alicia explained to her starter. ”Alright…!” Tikani grimaced out, keeping an eye on Josh, Sidra, and Altair. Once they decided who was going to be affected by the Discharge, she gathered her power and formed her Reflect barrier. > Tikani’s Defense improved!Similar pop ups, naming the other Pokemon sent to battle, would inform them that at the very least they would have some protection from part of the Xurkitree’s moveset. But the tier down took away her capacity for Light Screen… and Alicia didn’t enjoy the thought of going into battle with only half of her screen set up. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin Sidra Altair Round 3 roll Here

Little did he know that the key card would lead them straight into a—
“Holy fucking shit,” he would spit out as the table very nearly sent him flying; and their only way of getting back had been pretty much cut off.
Out of instinct, he would hold his arm up and attempt to block Sidra’s way forward, because he knew she had a reckless streak and wanted to get in on the damned thing.
“Anyone got a Ground-type we can use to cancel out the Electric attacks?!” he exclaimed as the belated realization sunk in that he had a—
Oh, shit, things were going to get rough on him, weren’t they?!
“Kyouya! If you’re listening, get that Tailwind up!” he would shout at the unruly Rufflet’s direction, who was now literally screaming bloody murder at the—what the fuck was that?
(To be fair, he’d only played Pokémon until Generation Six, which was why he’d gone for his favorite starter in the Kalos region!)
“I don’t know what that is but the fuck, that’s bad news! Sorry! Only played until Kalos!” he would explain for their companions’ benefit—he was aware Sidra knew of that fact of his Pokémon knowledge at the very least.
A few moments later, a strong wind would blow through the area; hopefully making all their allied Pokémon’s reaction time faster!

"...Saber!!" Josh reached toward the Manectric that collapsed upon being hurled into a door at the speed of a ballistic missile. Were this as lethal as the real world, the blow would have flattened the Pokémon, killing him instantly. Instead, the impact simply squeezed every remaining hit point the electric-type had, leaving Josh with three Pokémon -- and down two of his weakest fighters.
Even so, what choice did Josh have? Quest experience was too tantalizing, and what was the penalty for failure? A white out back to the last shrine he visited? If anything, he could come back with a slightly higher level team and solo the boss with the knowledge he had now. As things were, taking down the Invasive Species beyond the door would mandate all four of them work together.
The sound of warping steel made Josh flinch, their escape route sealed not long after all four of them entered. "Locking the doors is pretty standard boss fanfare," the scout replied to Alicia Westfield with a deadpan look on his face. Instinctively loosing a ground-type into the electric alien, Josh was taken aback when he saw the DISCHARGE seemed to pierce Granmarg's defenses.
Warning> An electrical surge has caused a massive power retraction. Warning> Granmarg has lost High Horsepower. Warning> Granmarg has lost Counter.
"Great," Josh harumphed. "Now I can't even use my best move on it. At least your REFLECT will help mitigate what I'm about to do to it." With the TAILWIND, Granmarg's agility would be massively improved, letting the normally slow Mudsdale strike with the speed of a charging Rapidash. "Now, BULLDOZE it!" With a loud neigh, the giant horse galloped toward the Xurkitree in an effort to ram, trample, and crush one of its wires underhoof.

Sidra’s pain threshold allowed her the unfortunate experience of a lot of pain as they entered the bossroom. If it hadn’t been for the boss promptly taking her attention away from the experience then she might’ve even complained about it.
But alas there was a monster to fight, one Altair seemed inclined to halt her from approaching. Admittedly, understandably so, even through the haze of recklessness she could see that a direct attack from her would do woefully little. This was quite certainly confirmed as she summoned Fuecoco, the only Pokemon in her party.
A quick look at its current status revealed that Fuecoco had become classless. “Coco, stay at range and pelt it in Embers. And be careful of its attacks.” She quickly explained, though she was uncertain if the fire Pokemon actually understood the order it was given, with its one brain cell.
Luckily it seemed to have understood it well enough as it stepped forward and began to spew small pellets of fire at the Boss.

A DISTURBING REVELATION
A sphere of enervating electricity expands outward from the alien. As it strikes Alicia Westfield 's BAYLEEF, Altair 's RUFFLET, Josh Devlin 's MUDSDALE, and Sidra 's FUECOCO, overpowering even the scout's electrical immunity, several of their techniques become unusable, forcing the grass-type to audible to erecting a REFLECTIVE shield.
Though Sidra 's FUECOCO is no longer a SWEEPER, and might possess only one brain cell, one brain cell was all the excitable fire-type needs, opening its maw wide and loosing a barrage of EMBERS. A brief, subtle white flash accompanies every single one that struck: an indicator of the monstrous CRITICAL HITS her loyal partner lands. Whatever HUD settings she had set for seeing inflicted damage, watching it had to be quite satisfying.
The barrage causes the alien to lurch back, interrupting its gathering of power for a massive attack. This delay allows the RUFFLET to whip up a TAILWIND fast enough to greatly speed up Josh Devlin 's MUDSDALE, the ground-type BULLDOZING straight into the Invasive Species. A sphere of sparks detonates from one of its arms, the wiring inside it badly damaged and disrupting the flow of power within it.
The Xurkitree, shaking and wavering, lets out a loud screech and winds up its good wire-arm. Thanks to the added speed from the TAILWIND, the REFLECTIVE shield is finished in time for the combatants' Pokémon to brace themselves for a deafening POWER WHIP. With an eardrum-slamming metallic crack, the sweeping cord slashes across all four of the trainers' Pokémon.
Sidra 's FUECOCO holds strong, the POWER WHIP leaving a wide cut across its small frame. Josh Devlin 's MUDSDALE is saved by the grass-type's REFLECT, his shield shattering around him and mitigating the strike just enough to leave it at CRITICAL HEALTH. Alicia Westfield 's BAYLEEF owes Sidra's FUECOCO for its survival, the full power of its REFLECT shield needed to blunt the blow enough to remain standing. It, too, stands at CRITICAL HEALTH. Altair 's RUFFLET, however, is not so lucky; it absorbs the full might of the whipcrack, knocking it out of the sky with an abhorrent squish, FAINTING.
Shortly after the two active Pokémon are reduced to dangerously low health, a cutscene begins to play. The Xurkitree's head begins flashing like a strobe light. Like a Colossal Pokémon of the ARENA, it appears to be readying a nasty attack. Once the players gain control, an ominous message appears at the top of their HUDs:
Combat Log> Xurkitree readies Gigavolt Havoc.

Alicia couldn’t help herself. Seeing Josh pull his Ace for this fight out was painful for her to witness. Her palm promptly hit her face. ”JOOOOOOSH! What part of ‘Aces in the back’ did you not hear? I realize main line doesn’t throw this kind of curve ball often but come on!”After all this was a much more serious mishap than a faint hope the boss wouldn’t lock the door for once. She had known that most likely they were going to get locked in. But if the creature had been slow on the lock they might’ve been able to bail. Either way, she had mentally banked on Granmarg’s High Horsepower to output immense damage in a short time in order to try and damage race this Beast down. But with Josh apparently either not hearing the warning in time or otherwise disregarding the strangeness of this Discharge, that option was gone. At least Altair seemed to get the memo, keeping his Greninja tucked away for later. And Sidra appeared to have the same misfortune as her, only having one mon to throw into the line of fire. And then the massive Power Whip tore through them, nearly shattering Tikani’s Reflect barrier and leaving the team largely in shambles. There was only one member of their team that was still standing strong, and that was largely due to the little crocodile not being targeted as harshly. And now the Ultra Beast was going for a strong electrical attack. ”… Tikani, leave it a parting gift, will you? Leech Seed. Then try to take cover.” Alicia called. ”Where exactly would I find cover?” Tikani asked with a sarcastic grunt. ”As long as it doesn’t do that weird Discharge again, Granmarg’s immunity should hold.” Alicia explained. ”Better than nothing.” Tikani answered, flicking her leaves about and throwing the enervating LEECH SEEDs into the masses of wires that made up Xurkitree’s body. Not stopping to see how the seeds worked on the lanky creature, the Bayleef moved in the hopes of escaping the wrath of the incoming nuke by sidling enough to try and keep Granmarg between her and the boss. —————————————————————— Josh Devlin Altair SidraShort Hand: Tikani throws Leech Seeds at the Xurkitree in the hopes of getting some team healing in. As the loud whipping noise cracked across the screen, he felt something flicker; before shattering—and there went his Rufflet, downed by the force of the—hilariously this was a Grass-type move that had downed the Braviary-to-be…
Boy he was sure Kyouya’s pride (and ego) was going to be massively wounded at that. If he could put on some clown make up right then and there, he certainly would.
“Fuck,” he grumbled; realizing that while he did have a Pidove and a female Nidoran in reserve… there was nothing else to it.
“This shit better go the fuck down,” he would growl before he turned to his twin sibling.
“Sid, can you keep the covering fire up with… with whatever insane luck you have? Can’t believe you ganked my luck,” he groaned as he recalled the Rufflet back; before popping out…
The Greninja.
‘Are you kidding me.’
“Look, you’re the strongest I have right now!”
‘You better make up for this later.’
“I will, I will! Sorry!” he would apologize, holding up one hand before pointing at the huge-ass thing that looked to be made of sentient wiring.
(Did Pokémon get weirder and weirder the more generations went on?!)
A few seconds later, the Greninja would, by process of elimination, use their strongest-available attack: a fire hose-blast of Hydro Pump water aimed at the strange walking pile of electric wiring.
• Rufflet KO! Rufllet is recalled! • Greninja is summoned, and comes out screaming with a Hydro Pump!

Granmarg wasn't Josh's ace in the traditional sense. It was, though, the best Pokémon he had remaining. "This whole thing is a damage race! If that Gigavolt Havoc goes off, we're done for! Granmarg, HIGH HORSEPOWER!"
Unlike Raiden, the Mudsdale was not great at jumping. He was, though, great at ramming. The Pokémon had trampled many a wild in the Surge Steppes while Ponyta hunting; even without a rider to guide him, he was more than capable of flattening even hardy Pokémon with his massive hooves. The horse bravely charged toward the Xurkitree, loudly whinnying as the brunt of the POWER WHIP cracked onto his side. It turned the ramming attack into a kicking one, Josh's partner rearing in pain before slamming his hooves onto the wireframe in attempt to cut electricity off.
Altair got it, too; rather than brace for the Z-Move's impact, why not defeat its user before it fired? “Hey! I didn’t gank your luck. It’s all skill!” Sidra replied cockily. Having had a taste of usefulness the young woman and the Fuecoco were both feeling quite lit-up with positivity.
“Coco, keep the fire going. We’ll burn that oversized ball of wiring!”
Damaged or not the Fuecoco went to the task with an eagerness only befitting its fiery nature and lacking intelligence. Embers flew as quickly as the little Pokemon could produce them, some might even say quicker than the game could possibly generate them, but that was probably just a trick of the mind.
Either way the Fuecoco did as it was told, stayed at range and rained hell-EMBER down on the Boss.

GIGAVOLT HAVOC
Though Altair 's RUFFLET may have collapsed, its TAILWIND would prove vital in the adventurers' battle plans, shifting the impending Z-Move to the back of the action queue. They would need to make every move count. The Swimmer's GRENINJA thrusts toward the otherworldly electric-type, its trainer's class experience elevating the already strong HYDRO PUMP to such power that the rest of the party can feel the tremor of its impact, even at a distance. While it is reeling, Alicia Westfield 's BAYLEEF spreads LEECH SEEDS using its leaves, taking root and draining energy from its foe's massive health pool.
Josh Devlin 's MUDSDALE puts all it has into a charging attack befitting the speedster, not even blinking while sprinting through the wake of water his ally's HYDRO PUMP had created. Metallic snapping noises echo inside the enclosed battleground as the ground-type's HIGH HORSEPOWER snaps one of the outsider's wires. Seizing the opportunity, Sidra 's FUECOCO rains EMBERS upon the exposed wiring in a mini-meteoric hail.
The Xurkitree, though blinking red after the offensive, stands defiantly. Suddenly, all other movement comes to a halt as an unskippable cutscene plays. An electric web rapidly expands outward, its center becoming increasingly bright as the guardian discharges the Z-MOVE: GIGAVOLT HAVOC. Those who do not avert their eyes from the light bright as the sun can see their Pokémon's skeletons through their skin, unless they are accessing UNOVR from Chinese servers, in which case the cutscene is appropriately censored. Even Josh Devlin 's MUDSDALE is not completely immune; the voltage is simply too high for its Ground-typing to completely overcome.
Once the adventurers regain vision and control, Josh Devlin and Altair are immediately greeted with a red pop-up on their UIs:
Combat Log> All members of the active party have fallen. Please replace the fallen members with one or more reserve members.
Were they to peer toward the section of their UI depicting party status, two names would be missing: Sidra and Alicia Westfield . Were they to look around for their two friends missing from their displays, they would find silhouettes of light where they once stood. The ladies are greeted with a far more menacing sight: their vision slowly fading to white as the blinking Xurkitree suffered the consequences of its exertion.

”You see how fast that bar’s charging? Sidra and I aren’t long for this fight.” Alicia shot back to Josh. ”The best thing we can do is leave behind something that contributes damage for however many remaining rounds this thing lasts for.”Tikani looked like she was about to comment as well. But she never got the chance. Thunder boomed, the voice of the heavens roared. In the moment the crackle of lightning was deafening, to accompany the blinding flash she hadn’t been able to avert her eyes in time for. Alicia groaned, feeling dazed, as the lightning passed, before realizing that the light was encroaching on her vision. She just barely managed to cast her gaze about, finding her starter collapsed and completely still. She’d already lost too much clarity to accurately determine the full extent of the injury. And even that was all the time she had before being whisked away. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin Altair SidraAaaaaand that’s all she wrote for me.

Josh's fatal mistake was having Granmarg charge through the remnants of the Greninja's HYDRO PUMP attack. Enough water had seeped into the ground-type's crevices that his body conducted electricity, overcoming the normal electric immunities associated with ground Pokémon. Perhaps he should have listened to Alicia Westfield 's advice more closely. It was the fatal flaw in his blitzkrieg battle plan; the longer battles went on, the less likely his team was to win.
The party had barely survived. As he looked around, he saw only Altair at his side; Alicia Westfield and Sidra were both derezzing into white columns that only roughly maintained humanoid shapes. "They're... they're being digitized, aren't they?!" Josh screamed, not understanding how whiting out worked. After all, he had yet to see the Game Over screen himself. How could he know? "ALICIA!! SIDRA!! DON'T DIE ON ME!!" he wailed in fury.
Clicking Raiden's Poké Ball, he hurled the device as close as he could to the recharging Xurkitree. "Raiden, FLAME CHARGE!" Sharing in his trainer's rage, the equine's mane blazed, ramming and trampling over the exposed wires with the aim to melt its circuitry from the inside out. As the extremely bright flash of light exploded across the screen; even he couldn’t help but raise his arms to shield what little remained of his vision, all because of the way the ‘explosion’ happened.
It was still so blindingly bright, he thought he felt a layer of his eyeballs burn away.
Once the entire ‘flash bang’ had gone off and the surroundings had faded back to normal—
As opposed to four party members, only him and Josh remained standing—before the other literally lost his shit.
“You haven’t blacked out in any game you’ve ever played, have you?” he would begin Josh’s way in a surprisingly calm voice.
“This happens to me and Sid over here when we’re in Eorzea and she’s being too reckless for her own ass… and I have to come in and save her, but then I end up whiting out too because of the danger that we inevitably end up in… I doubt they’d do this game like that other anime series where if you die in the game, it’s also game over for you in real life.”
Funny how the frazzled delivery boy IRL was the one who was rationally calm about this all happening!
He turned to Alicia’s figure before it faded out—
“See you back at the closest town, hm?”
He would then attempt to noogie the other fading pillar of light before throwing her a smirk.
“Yeah… we gotta work on your Pokémon party. I’ll help you.”

Sidra knew this would happen. She talked a big game, even boasted about her fiery power. But Against a boss like this she wouldn’t be long for the world, nor would her Fuecoco for all of its effort.
As the unskippable cutscene began, Sidra consigned herself to her fate. Only helped along with the big GAME OVER screen displayed to her.
This would be the end of this dungeon for her. The loud thunder and bright light blinded her and when next she gained vision wherever she was it certainly wasn’t the dungeon any longer.

VICTORY!
The battle-ending GIGAVOLT HAVOC reduces the adventurers' numbers from four to two, Alicia Westfield leaving them with inspiring words before she and Sidra WHITE OUT. Were Josh Devlin and Altair to check their friends' location data, had they opted to share it with their friends, they would be at the last shrine they used.
With Altair too busy saying his goodbyes to Sidra , Josh Devlin and his ZEBSTRIKA take the initiative while the XURKITREE was on cooldown, the electric horse sprinting toward it in a FLAME CHARGE. Orange-yellow flames pour into its exposed wires, the foe's dull red flashing ceasing on contact. All models within the two players' views briefly trail images as the scout lands the FINAL BLOW. A cutscene plays, flames and sparks bursting from the XURKITREE. One of its wires whooshes over Altair 's head, barely missing him and wedging itself between the hunk of metal and the door. It provides enough leverage to pull the piece of metal away from the door, allowing the duo to escape the Sector when their business is finished.
Once the cutscene is over, Josh Devlin and Altair strike triumphant poses if they desire, their HUDs disappearing to yield a single exalting message couldwd with a triumphant fanfare:
As the adventurers regain control, including Alicia Westfield and Sidra , wherever they may be, a flurry of character advancement and item acquisition messages barrage their HUDs, most of it scrolling too fast to parse in real time. The only one that catches their eyes is the last one:
Information> Obtained a strand of ZYGARDE DNA.
Were they to check their inventories, they would find they had been rewarded handsomely for their accolades in investigating the laboratory and defeating the Colossal Invasive Species within...
