Though Josh had unearthed several secrets of the Absndoned Laboratory with Aero , the dented door bothered him. Unable to hold his curiosity back, he returned to the Forgotten Nexus with Granmarg in tow, staying on his steed as long as he could until the halls became too narrow and lacked clearance for the duo to travel together.
After wandering the deserted halls for a couple minutes, Josh happened upon an unsettling sight: the door that had had a huge dent in it had also been mangled, a mess of thick wires the only thing illuminated by what little light there was. Beyond was total darkness - darkness Ares' small tail would cast little light on. As he was about to advance into the room to get a better look, a new pop-up obscured his vision:
Discovery> A new Quest has been discovered: Explore Sector Jarzick! Information> Sector Jarzick | Recommended Lv: 6
This place was a lot bigger than Josh thought it would be, and he was not at the recommended level. He was one level beneath the recommendation, and his experience bar was a little less than halfway full. Surely he would get it filled in the middle of his exploration, right?
Clicking a PokĂŠ Ball open, Saber materialized from within, the Manectric bumping Josh with his snout and giving him a minor shock. The trainer flinched before returning the affection with some of his own. "Ready for your first real dungeon, Saber?" he asked.
"Yep!" the Manectric barked back enthusiastically. "We'll get to the bottom of this mystery!" Before either of them could proceed, another pop-up obscured his vision:
Error> Light Party required. A minimum of four characters must be in your party to proceed.
With only Alicia Westfield and Abaddon on his Friends List, he couldn't simply party up with friends alone. He entered the Ostellia server chat and posted a recruitment thread there.
I'm inside the Abandoned Laboratory and have discovered a new Quest. It's called Explore Sector Jarzick, and it's a few turns between Sectors Grus and Horologium. Requires a Light Party. Looking for three to five companions. I've turned global DMs on. Reply here or DM me if you're interested. Tagging Alicia Westfield . WHAT TO EXPECTThis thread will fulfill the requirements for the Abandoned Laboratory Ostellia Quest, while providing a Zelda-style dungeon experience.
To prepare for the Quest, you must register a team of up to six PokĂŠmon. Once you have registered your team, that team will be locked in and static; you may not upgrade mid-thread. If you white out, you will despawn and will not be able to return. Characters that white out will still be eligible for full rewards!
The first round will not require rolling, but future rounds will. Simply post your introduction, and include your list of up to six PokĂŠmon in a SPOILER TAG in your post notes.
The event will be ran in a hybrid format: the first half will largely be prompt-based: a list of plot beats to hit, with occasional mod posts to nudge players toward the remaining prompts that have not been hit. The second half will consist of a boss battle. Emphasis will be on exploration and combat with some mild puzzle-solving elements.
Combat will be FREEFORM. There are no planned PVP elements to the Quest; this is intended to be a cooperative effort.
The quest is expected to last eight to ten weeks. Expect mod posts WEEKLY where applicable, ideally every Monday. If all characters post early, I reserve the right to make a mod post prior to the deadline.
Signups will be open until February 26 at 11:59 PM CST, or once five characters have registered, whichever comes first. Josh Devlin will be participating in the Quest but he will not be taking up a registration slot. If there are not three signups by the deadline, signups will be extended until three characters have registered.
There will be no set posting order.
Please include a TL;DR in your post notes summarizing your character's important actions.
Characters that miss multiple posting rounds risk being ejected from the Quest.
Further directions for each phase of the Quest will be listed within each mod post.
All participants will receive a strand of ZYGARDE DNA at the completion of the Quest.

DIRECT MESSAGE> Hey! Saw your tag on the forums. Weâre on our way. Hope I donât end up in over my head here.âItâs kinda nice being bigger now. But I wasnât expecting this set up.â Tikani mused as she ran at a surprising clip for the animal her species was based on. âAm I too heavy?â Alicia asked as she looked at her evolved partner. â⌠Not really, no. I was just surprised. And I am faster than you now.â the Bayleef replied. âYeah. I was shocked at how big you got. Just had to see if this was possible.â Alicia agreed, nodding. It was nice to figure out that restrictions were more lenient when the Pokemon could assist you in staying on. Tikani had a pair of vines wrapped around her waist helping her stay seated. And the Gardener class having a growth enhancing effect on her Grass types was helpful. Though it made her wonder how big Tikani would be as a Meganium. After an embarrassing moment getting lost briefly, they managed to reorient and find the laboratory in question. At which point it was just a matter of turning up after following the directions. âHey again. Weâre certainly partnering up a lot, arenât we?â Alicia greeted with an amused hum. {âPokemon Teamâ}Tikani (Bayleef) Giyun (Duraludon)

Well, part of the immersive learning experience was⌠poke around and find the fuck out what could happen.
That was half the fun of diving into a game like this, right?
He was⌠admittedly far away from his âusualâ haunt, when he thought he saw something on the server-wide messages being broadcasted and then realizedâŚ
âYou know⌠I think this is the time where you may earn your name,â he would address the Greninja that was walking alongside him.
âOh, youâve already made up your mind?â
âPretty much. Iâm just⌠torn between a couple names now.â
To be fair heâd been sitting on this for too long a time; all things considered because well. He wanted to make sure that his first-ever companion would be proud of him. He didnât want to let the dual-type down, if he was being honest.
âWell, I await your decision.â
âThanks,â he would hum before quickly opening a private message window and then typing in, âSo I heard you were looking for another companion? Count me in.â
Of course, the other knew he had a Rufflet, a Nidoran, and a Pidove⌠but was not expecting him to be packing a Greninja right out the gate.
Where had the time gone?
In no time flat he would eventually arriveâbut then realize that they werenât the only people going in.
âHello,â he would wave in Aliciaâs direction; while the Greninja would bow their way before resuming his guard stance.
âSo⌠what exactly we getting ourselves into?â he would turn to ask Josh, seeing as the other was the âringleaderâ of the entire operation.

Sidra definitely wasnât high enough level for this. But was that going to stop her? Definitely not. She had seen the request posted on the forum and figured what better way to level up and acquire some hella-strong PokĂŠmon than to do some dungeoneering.
And so she made her way through the ingame-map as best her limited team-composition would allow her. Sure she had yet to catch another Pokemon, but she would make do, one Pokemon was all she needed for she knew their combined fires would burn bright enough to defeat any in-game monster.
But exposition aside. Sidra casually walked to their meeting location, and as she came within reach she raised a casual hand in greeting as a âHello there!â chipperly escaped from her. Only for her to finally notice the presence of Altair.
âOh you are here too!â She spoke still as happily as before. Though she knew that his presence meant that had to put in actual effort rather than being carried through this.

Josh was surprised to get a response from Alicia Westfield so quickly, followed by Altair and Sidra , the last of which he didn't recognize. "Told you riding is fun!" Josh greeted her with a smile. "We might be stuck on foot, though; those doors look narrow. The mobility will be nice if you can squeeze through. Just watch your legs."
He directed his attention to Altair and their companion. "Fresh out of tutorial land still and here to leech XP off me, huh?" the blonde teased as he continued to give Saber affection. "I don't mind carrying the party, but watch yourself. I'll do what I can to keep everyone from whiting out, but there's only so much I can do. Supports and heals will be really important." He couldn't underestimate that Altair already had a Greninja. What a powerful and fast PokĂŠmon. Maybe the rest of the group could pull their own weight, after all?
"I'm just teasing, of course," he laughed, trying to break the ice before things got serious inside the undiscovered Sector of the lab. "Great to see you again, Sidra. Just... be careful out there. Even I'm not the recommended level for this quest. I imagine I'll get there after a few battles inside."
Once he had added all three to his party, the green "Start Quest" button illuminated. "Alright, clicking Start Quest now."

#s://file~garden/ZDeuoB-J4RNQd5aY/unovr/DungeonCrawls/Jarzick/GM-avatar~png When Josh Devlin clicks the message, a prominent pop-up flashes in the center of each participating player's UI:
DUTY COMMENCED. As the badly dented, electronic door slowly creaks open, everyone's vision briefly fades to black. They feel a sensation of them being teleported to a new location. When their vision returns, they are on the other side of the now-opened door, Alicia Westfield now next to her BAYLEEF and on foot. If they were to check, Alicia Westfield , Altair , and Josh Devlin would find their "Mount" buttons on their UIs greyed out. It seems riding on a PokĂŠmon's back is only possible in certain areas of the lab. Furthermore, their GOLDEN POKEBALLS in their inventories were greyed out. Sector Jarzick
Audio: A Scorched Nation
The reason for the "Mount" button being disabled quickly becomes apparent: extremely low light makes vision difficult, and the hallways are narrow enough to impede all but the sleekest, skinniest steeds. What limited light filters in from cracks in the ceiling, as well as from Josh Devlin 's CHARMANDER's tail, reveals twisted metal all over the place. Sidra bumps her head against a nearly invisible electrical wire. Thankfully for her, there seems to be no power to it.
As the brave quartet proceed deeper, they find many, many doors closed with no power. The few that are open have enormous dents and holes in them or are completely misshapen, much like the ruined metal arms that once held computer monitors, small tables and shelves, and other objects one would expect to see in a laboratory setting. Alicia Westfield , being a GARDENER, recognizes the dents as the impact points of a POWER WHIP, though punching a hole through through metal with such an attack would require power unlike anything she had thus far seen in UNOVR.
Though many of the rooms look identical or similar, the party's MINI-MAP helps a lot, keeping records of where they have been, and even where progress has been stopped. It is eerily quiet throughout Jarzick's metallic halls. Where are all the wild PokĂŠmon? And where is the source of all the carnage?
As the group reaches a dead end, Josh Devlin 's CHARMANDER provides just enough light for Altair 's GRENINJA to see a large generator. Those with PokĂŠmon out that are trained as mounts will notice their "Mount" buttons illuminated again. The control panel for the generator appears to be quite complex, and many of the markings around its buttons are worn out. Near a desk and a bookshelf, paper is scattered everywhere. While some of it is shredded and illegible, Sidra is able to locate the front page of the manual for the generator.
Before the investigation can proceed any further, the sound of a whipcrack echoes from the distance, shortly followed by an explosion that everyone can feel tremors of.
PROMPTS Stuck? Good story beats to hit include, but are not limited to the below:
- Search for the power generator manual
- Shed some light on the room
- Examine the twisted and/or dented metal
- Attempt to activate the generator

âI was beginning to worry we were going to have to abort.â Alicia commented when she saw Altair turn up for the big quest. He was shortly followed by Sidra and she was a bit concerned now. She was thinking someone farther along in the game would turn up, but it seemed they were all relatively equal to each other. âGood day to the two of you, and letâs take things carefully. Who knows what weâll find down there.â the Gardener got out before Josh went and initiated the quest. She was unsurprised to end up on her feet after effectively loading in to the veritable dungeon. And what dungeon would be complete without poor lighting conditions? Alicia let out an annoyed huff as they proceeded, as neither Tikani nor Giyun were able to provide illumination on their own. And she doubted Ares, Joshâs Charmander, could consistently provide large amounts of illumination in a controlled fashion. Unless Altair and Sidra had some options she wasnât aware of, she might have to get clever⌠âTikani⌠how well can you control a few⌠âshardsâ I suppose, of a Reflect?ââErr⌠I might be able to manage something? Though itâd definitely not be as useful as a barrier if my attentionâs elsewhere. Why?â For once, her Bayleef wasnât seeing the train of thought her partner was getting at this time. âItâs not much, but we do have some light pouring in. Try and make a shard into the shape of a convex lensâŚâ Alicia paused briefly, trying to give her leafy friend an idea of what such a lens would look like with some hand motions and descriptive wording. ââŚand hold it up to the light weâre getting from the ceiling.ââErr⌠hmmâŚâ The Bayleef shrugged a bit, deciding it couldnât hurt, and began to forge the psionic REFLECT. âSo what are we hoping to accomplish with thisâŚ?ââWith any luck, while the scope will be limited to where we have light filtering in, a convex lens should be able to focus what light we do have into an impromptu flashlight. Just mind the width, bulge, and angle of the lens, since the slightest adjustment will affect the result. Who knows, maybe if this works well we can work with Joshâs Charmander and have a little more freedom on what we can shine light on.â Alicia explained, hopeful her plan would help them spot things they wouldâve otherwise missed. After all, there were already hints of things that were quite concerning. She didnât look into them much right now, as she was focused on trying to alleviate the lighting issue they were dealing with at the moment. âââââââââââââââââââââââ Alicia and Tikani open up with some conversation. They try to address the subpar lighting of the sector first with a shaped REFLECT disk to create a makeshift flashlight. Josh Devlin Altair Sidra

He would cackle quietly at Joshâs crack the moment the other saw the Greninja. He was well-aware that the other knew he had a Rufflet, a Nidoran, and a Pidove; but nothing like the Water-type that was walking alongside them now.
âWell⌠for my friendâs sake,â he continued as he tilted his head in Sidraâs direction, ââŚI decided to poke around a little more and ended up with this.â
At least one of them had a Water-type ready to go.
All too soon the status screen on his interface would change, and they would be taken into the âdungeonâ properâand he would cringe the moment âsister dearestâ almost hit a low-hanging power cable.
âCareful out there,â he would warn her lightly; while the Greninja continued to gently shove the inert power lines away as they moved alongâ
It wouldnât take too long for them to arrive at what appeared to be a crime scene. At least thatâs how he processed what he was seeing.
âHey.â
âWhat?â
âI see somethingâover there,â and the amphibious PokĂŠmon would point in the direction of what appeared to be rusted-over generator.
Had people run amok here and left whatever it was they researched behindâŚ? Hopefully they didnât have to fight a boss or anything like that!
âHm. Anyone make heads or tails of what the heck this panel does?â he would ask the room at large, having stopped in front of the control panel. Without anything to guide them, though, he couldnât make sense of any of these buttons.
âFind anything?â he would ask Sidra a few moments later.
⢠setting up to attempting to activate the generator because who the hell wouldnât go âooh shinyâ at those buttons?!

Alicia's and Tikani's makeshift flashlight would focus light where it was most needed, but it would also make it more difficult to see elsewhere, causing Josh to trip over a chair leg and nearly squish Ares. With the Charmander's tail alight, that would have been unpleasant. The sound of him hitting the cracked tile floor beneath him echoed, as well. He followed what little light the fire-typr gave off and stumbled to his feet. Thankfully, the Sector wasn't completely enclosed; if he had to, Ares could use his other fire attacks to provide temporary lighting without worrying about eating up an oxygen supply.
Once he was close enough to Tikani to be able to see, Josh gave her a pat on the back if she allowed it. "Great work, both of you," he complimented. "Never would have thought of a solution like that. You take AP Physics in high school?" he casually asked.
As the young man approached Altair , he noticed the bird lover and his powerful Greninja at what appeared to be a control panel. "Can you even see?" he asked, concerned that one or more of the buttons would trigger some kind of trap. "Up we go, Ares!" The passionate PokĂŠmon rider picked the Charmander up in one arm and grabbed the base of his tail with the other.
"Watch it with that!" Ares screeched; Josh had apparently hit a sensitive spot as he held the tail above the panel to illuminate it a little better. While most of the labels had been defaced, whether by natural or manmade means, there were still a few intact. Maybe Sidra could shed some light on what they did...

Sidra walked casually, too casually perhaps as the duty began. She even managed to bump her head against a nearly invisible wire, but thought no more of it. Mostly because Altair-dearest warned her. She simply rolled her eyes and replied jokingly. âI will, I will.â She would not.
Instead she was focused more on the lack of Pokemon spawns. Usually dungeons or duties like this would spawn enemies that they would have to deal with, though that could be experience from previous games talking.
Anyhow, as they reached the dead end and began to investigate, Sindra stumbled upon something that looked like the Manual for something or at least parts of it. She tried to read it, but it all went above her head with technical terms.
But maybe Altair could make heads and tails of it. And so she moved over to her twin and offered him the item for him to read, without a single word spoken. Surely he would pick up on her intention!

Alicia Westfield 's innovative solution yields great results. The lens of REFLECT turns the dusk-like illumination into a brilliant spotlight that makes whatever her BAYLEEF shines upon it become bright as day. This light and that of Josh Devlin 's CHARMANDER's tail, when shined toward the main generator, proves sufficient for Altair to read enough of the defaced labels and engravings to find out which one is the power button.
After reading through bits and pieces of the manual that Sidra located, the bird enthusiast has all the information he need to properly activate the generator. And so, he does. The generator loudly whirs, sparks flying everywhere from severed wires. Whether by misfortune or by negligence, Josh Devlin finds himself standing on a large wire as it bursts from a powerful surge of electricity, giving him and his CHARMANDER quite the shock. They fall to the ground, their muscles convulsing uncontrollably. Although painful, Josh manages to survive the shocks. His CHARMANDER is much less fortunate, the small PokĂŠmon's convulsions causing him to stab himself on a jagged shard of glass. The fire-type FAINTS from blood loss.
The entire place suddenly turns to life, an electronic door ahead of the party opening on its own. Though they all hear echoes of glass shattering ahead, presumably from light bulbs shattering, the hallways seem to be well-lit now. The focused beam of light from Alicia Westfield 's PokĂŠmon is almost blinding. Many ways that were previously locked are now open to the explorers. But which one will lead them to the bottom of Jarzick's mystery? And what caused the lab to be abandoned in the first place?

He thought he overheard an angry Charmander yowling because they rather didnât like being picked up by the tail⌠big mistake, if he was being honest.
He had to bite down the snicker that was bubbling up in his throat because they had things to do, and once they were able to cobble together what the pieces of paper did, they would attempt to generate power to get the place runningâŚ
âŚonly for a sudden explosion of sparks to catch him off-guard; he would hiss in disgust at their direction!
(Because for starters, he was a Water-specialist⌠for the moment. Electricity never mixed too well with Water, did itâŚ)
While he wasnât the leader of the joint, he would have one of those âaha!â moments when he realized somethingâ
âDo we have a map of any kind to use so we donât end up going through the same rooms twice?â he would voice out loud; not too long before he thought he saw an Elekid happily approaching a sparking wire some distance awayâŚ
Okay, no. No, thatâs just too much, he would think as he watched the small Electric-type literally snacking on the open, exposed wire like it was a piece of candy!

Alicia smirked a bit smugly as her idea came to fruition in the best of ways. Though it was unfortunate that it made other areas darker because the limited light was being refocused elsewhere, it was something theyâd have to deal with in order to get something running in this busted up place. âNot exactly.â Alicia noted in reply to Josh. âI had a lot of time to trawl through the internet and just pick up random knowledge like how glass effects light. After that and a bit of logical thought, here we are.âHappy to have provided such a useful service, Alicia and Tikani were cool with just holding their position. It gave them the space to adjust the Bayleefâs Reflect lenses as necessary to get the light where the rest of the party needed it most. Which got the team enough luminescence to read the manualâs pages and the generatorâs controls enough to fire it back up. Only for tragedy to strike as the aged behemoth of steel whirs to life. The pinkette let out a panicked gasp as she witnesses the wire under Joshâs foot burst from afar, sending him and his starter sprawling, Ares receiving significant injury in the process. She rushed over to them, but was both too late to really help and not sure if it was even safe to touch her friend at the moment. Sure, he wasnât in direct contact with the live wire anymore, but there might still be a lingering charge. âJosh!? A-Are you alright?âImmediately, she chided herself on the foolish question. He was just electrocuted, of course he wasnât âalrightâ! But what else could she say!? She didnât have any brilliant idea for this situation. Still, the lights were back on, at least in part, and so Tikaniâs impromptu flashlight went from helpful to impeding. Noticing the alteration herself, and happy to give her mind a rest, the Bayleef releases her concentration and lets the Reflect fade away. âThat⌠was harder than I gave it credit for.âBut while the team was getting their bearings, and Altair witnessing electric types do as they will, a heavy crack resounded through the halls. Aliciaâs eyes widened at the sound. She thought she had heard something similar, and seen evidence of the kind of damage a Power Whip could cause, but by the time theyâd solved the lighting issue it had passed from her mind. Now, though, it was suddenly a lot more relevant. âTikaniâŚ?â she began, holding up the Bayleefâs Pokeball. âI heard that too. You definitely need Giyun if that gets any closer.â Tikani agreed, eyes wide. Whatever it was sounded big and mean. With no complaints lodged, Alicia quickly made the switch. ââEy Boss. What da ya need?â the bulky Steel type asked as he emerged from the Pokeball. He could see the tension in Aliciaâs body and was preparing for the worst. âJust a bodyguard right now. Sounds like somethingâs on its way and youâre my heavy hitter. Might see something that needs your brute strength later though.â Alicia answered her dragon. Giyun nodded, staying on overwatch for the moment. âââââââââââââââââââââââ Josh Devlin Altair Sidra-> Hear the sound of a deafening whipcrack; its proximity indicates that its source may be close.

If any of Josh's partners checked their HUDs, they would see that the blonde had quite a bit of HP missing, and all of Ares' HP was gone. He withdrew the fire-type. "I... I'm okay. Just... shaken up," he replied as his arm convulsed mildly. It was a lot worse when he was absorbing the shocks. Even with his reduced pain threshold, it was paralyzing. One more blow like that, and he would white out. The young man withdrew the fallen Charmander for Ulysses the Seel, who promptly encircled him inside an AQUA RING. "It's not pretty, but it'll have to do," Josh sighed as REGEN would appear in the status column of his HUD and the HUD of anyone else's that showed status conditions. The health regeneration was slow; he doubted it would fill up before the boss fight that inevitably would come.
"Don't you have a mini-map, Altair ?" Josh asked. "Should be in one of the corners of your HUD." It might only give them information on places they've already been, though. Perhaps they would find a full map somewhere, but in the meantime, they would need to rely on exploration skills. Josh had played enough exploration-based video games that he had a great idea of how to route efficiently.
Heading down the hallway and taking a left through a powered door, he happened upon a log. It was difficult to read due to the paper's age and a large coffee stain, but he was able to make out most of it. He read it aloud to the group:
20:00 11-11-XXXX
The situation has escalated. I received word the PokĂŠmon League was destroyed at 18:00 last night, for reasons you probably know as well as I do. Our sister lab was vaporized, as were most of my colleagues. Unfortunately, there is no time to grieve.
My work on the extradimensional portals has been coming along well, but I never expected we'd need it so soon, or in such dire circumstances.
The public is being told it was a freak terrorist act, but that story won't hold up long when it crosses the ocean and they get a good look at it. Everyone is afraid of bad press for now, but what about the lives of the people of this region?
Josh gasped, stopping for a moment to ponder the entry. "Extradimensional portals? This is linked to the invasive species, isn't it? And... vaporized is a concerning word. There's one PokĂŠmon that comes to mind, and it's not one I'm eager to meet. Because no matter how skilled you are or how high leveled you are, you're not strapping a saddle to a Nec--"
The whipcrack that Alicia Westfield and Tikani picked up on reached Josh's ears, making him squint as his ears rung. "...That sounded really close. Watch your mini-map carefully. Alicia, you seem to like challenging video games. Are you familiar with... a Field-On Enemy?" Altair Alicia Westfield Sidra Prompt: Locate diary entry (1/3)

A lot of things seemed to happen in quick succession, Josh Devlin feeling the effects of electricity, Alicia Westfield hearing something dangerous approaching, and Altair doing Altair things. In conclusion a lot of chaos for her.
Now Sidra wanted to help and for a moment she fiddled with her HUD to see if she had some sort of map besides the mini-map that the game provided, but unfortunately she found herself lacking. Moving on, she decided to begin looking around in the laboratory to see if she might find one.
And as she looked around heedlessly of any dangers, she began to notice how filthy and disgusting the place was. She had to admit the Game Developers had hit the mark if they were going for cluttered-filth-in-an-old-lab-style. Maybe a little too well. She came to realize the filth probably hid some vital part for this duty and so began to clean up the lab area as best she could.
Prompt Used: - Clean up the lab for possible future use.
