It would not take long after the crash for Alicia and Giyun to return to Josh's side, the two catching a glimpse of him creaking open the lid of a treasure chest. He held its contents above his head: a shining, purple gemstone.
Information> You obtained an [tangent=This partially unlocks the Jeweler subclass!]amethyst[/tangent]! Appraise its value and you may be able to sell it to a shop.
"Just a money chest, it seemed..." the blonde sighed. "Not the worst thing in the world." He stowed the valuable and led the way downstairs, manipulating the turnstile in its new position so that they could head north. The lower level was... surprisingly empty. Almost hauntingly so. Enough that as Josh was exploring, slowly turning the map a bright blue, the compass signal caught him off guard and made him flinch. An ornate, blue and yellow treasure chest rest upon a high ledge. "That's way too high for us to fly to," Josh pointed, the two clearly able to see it from the chamber's corner.
Were Alicia to keep following Josh, they would find rock slabs closing behind them as they headed north again. As the music silenced itself, the terrain would shift from a hard, rocky floor to a dirt one, a mischievous-looking Drilbur popping out from underground.
"As long as I'm underground, your attacks don't scare me!" the ground-type boldly declared.
A frantic beat would fill the room as the Drilbur burrowed, Giyun perhaps able to feel vibrations from their burrowing foe moving toward him...!

”And I bet a charge from one of our heavier Pokemon won’t knock it down either…” Alicia sighed out, referencing a different series that had received it’s fourth installment after so very long. The gemstone was pretty though, so when there was another one to take, she happily pocketed it. Maybe it would be useful later. Or she could sell it? That’d require knowing how much it was worth though… Alicia was startled out of her musings by the doorway locking behind them again, and the stone turning to dirt. And a Drilbur popped out, smugly proclaiming its near invincibility while under the earth before burrowing under again. ”What I wouldn’t give for a Earthquake TM right about now!” Alicia yelled. ”Boss!?” Giyun bellowed, eyes wide. Ground attacks were one of the few things he was actually weak to, and the Drilbur was charging right towards him! ”I’ve got you!” Alicia called. Flicking the Duraludon’s ball out, she recalled her anchor before the Drilbur could strike him. Tossing another Pokeball out, she called Sylvene back out into the field. ”What’s happening now!?” Sylvene yelled out as she appeared, fluttering in the air where the Drilbur’s Ground moves couldn’t reach her. But if Alicia was right… ”Be careful of Rock attacks! Quick Attack the Drilbur the moment it pops out of the ground!” Alicia ordered, staying on the move. ”Aaaaagh, and I HATED dealing with PopUp and its virus!”She wondered if Josh would get that reference… ——————————————————————— Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Good Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Josh Devlin

Sensing vibrations from Sylvene taking off, the Drilbur pivoted toward the bird, leaping out of the soft soil and tearing into the bird's sensitive underside with METAL CLAWS. Yikes, that looked like it hurt! It was a quick little pest, too: before even the Zebstrika's illusory double could reach the Pokémon, it was already underground, causing the fires to barely graze the mole. Only Sylvene's QUICK ATTACK was fast enough to register full damage.
"That's enough, Raiden, return! Granmarg, you're up!" Josh exchanged the two horse Pokémon, the Mudsdale hitting the ground with a thud that immediately attracted their foe's attention. Moving toward the ground-type with slightly higher speed than before, Josh kept an eye on the displaced dirt to be able to track the burrowing foe. "Come on, this thing speeds up the lower it gets on health?!"

”A-Accursed vermin!” Sylvene screeched out as she tried and failed to nurse the slash wounds on her torso. ”I’ll have you put to the sword for this!””I hope you’re pulling Granmarg out now because he has Earthquake to nail this pest where it hurts…” Alicia called to Josh. While she didn’t want to risk Sylvene fainting just in case, she was even less keen on letting her other Pokemon eat an Earthquake if she could avoid it. ”Sorry Sylvene, you’re my only flying type so I need you out to absorb the quake without injury. Ready another Quick Attack.””Anything that puts this rodent down.” Sylvene seethed out in anger as she watched the trails closely. ”And it IS getting faster, isn’t it!?””Typical of these annoying pests. The harder you hit them the shorter the attack window becomes…” Alicia grumbled in frustration, bracing herself. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Low Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Josh Devlin

The vibrations from Granmarg hitting the ground attracted the Drilbur, which is exactly what the clever racer wanted. "That's exactly it!" Josh chirped as the horse reared, stomping right above the ground-type and rocking it with a titanic blow. Though they couldn't see the explosions, they could hear sound effects of the sub-boss being defeated.
A spinning red portal spawned on top of Josh and whisked him away... to the dungeon's entrance. Immediately taking the paired portal, he would reappear in front of Alicia and Sylvene seconds later. "Looks like we've opened up a shortcut to the entrance. How are you feeling?" the Kindler asked.
Provided Alicia was good to keep going, Josh would swap out Granmarg for Raiden, taking advantage of the increased range of his FLAME CHARGE to strike bridge-extending switches from a distance. One such bridge allowed the duo to access the basement's turnstile room from three directions. With some annoying backtracking and a fight or two, he and Alicia had access to the basement's east wing. One more puzzle remained in their way.
To the south of a shuttered passage was a switch that Josh pointed for his Zebstrika to stand on. Once operated, it raised two mushroom caps over an endless abyss, their stalks seemingly begging to be crushed by the electric horse's ranged FLAME CHARGE. Ordering his Pokémon to use the attack, the fiery reflection bounced off the north wall, disappearing when it hit the east one. "Right, we can't bounce it off two walls. Gotta do it with one."
He first had the idea to step on the switch himself and have Raiden stand in a spot where he could burn the two stalks to cinders, but that plan was derailed when Josh's weight wasn't enough to operate the switch. "Do you have another Pokémon that's heavy enough to weigh this thing down, Alicia? I think it's rusted."

Alicia couldn’t help herself. When the shaking stopped and the underground explosions began, she let out a whooping cheer. ”Way to go Josh and Granmarg! That’s how you stick it to them little pests!””Much obliged. While I would’ve liked to vent my frustration directly, I will settle for seeing the vermin so thoroughly dispensed with.” Sylvene replied. ”Sylvene could use some patching up if we get a moment. Giyun’s still smarting a bit from the Horn Drill earlier, but other wise we’re good to go.” Alicia answered with a grin. ”Though to see a midboss this late into the dungeon? If we didn’t have the Map I’d fear that we still had like ten to twelve rooms left to go through.”Proceeding onward with Josh, Alicia hummed softly at the request. Watching things unfold, she nodded as Josh readily arrived to a similar conclusion as well. ”Welp! I know who to use, shoo, shoo!”Waving Josh off of the switch, Alicia grinned and recalled Sylvene, before throwing Giyun’s pokeball up over the device. The Duraludon appeared in the flash and dropped on the switch with a loud ‘clang!’ … And completely failed to budge it. ”… Uuuuuum…?” Alicia drawled out in utter confusion. ”… You needed weight, didn’t you?” Giyun asked awkwardly. ”Yes…? Is it really that rusted…?” Alicia muttered out. ”Uh… my carapace actually weighs like ten pounds tops…” Giyun noted. ”And altogether I’m only about a hundred drenched in water.””…” Alicia was speechless, looking over to Josh with that mental breakdown expression of someone who’d just learned cursed information. ”Yeeeeah… this ain’t gonna work.” Giyun noted numbly, walking off the switch. ”Uh, got another option?””… Nope.” Alicia finished lamely. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Low Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Josh Devlin

Josh looked like he had acquired forbidden knowledge, as well. How could a metallic dragon that stood as tall as a small building be so light and so tough? Perhaps when he became an Ironsmith, he would craft a piece of armor from Duraludon hide. How many of them would he need to hunt down? It would be worthwhile when he was high enough level to equip it: the combination of light weight and hefty protection made it ideal for the mounted combatant. "Wow. I had no idea Duraludon were so light." What were their bodies filled with, helium gas?
Without a Pokémon to weigh the switch down, the Pokémon limit was going to complicate things... and due to size limitations, Josh wouldn't be able to fit beyond the bend with both of his horse Pokémon there. "When the descriptor said this dungeon had non-trivial puzzles, it wasn't kidding."
Then the solution dawned on him.
The scout set Granmarg's Poké Ball on the switch, then backed away from the cramped corner. "Raiden, I'm gonna need you to gently click the switch on Granmarg's Ball. Gently. Be careful, and don't crush it." The young man crossed his fingers as the electric horse pushed the button, causing Granmarg to emerge and hold the rusted mechanism down. "Perfect! Now Raiden, FLAME CHARGE!"
The Zebstrika reared and charged toward the pit, bouncing his reflection off the wall and toward the two tall stalks, the obstacle disintegrating. With a repeat of the attack, he smacked the switch hanging deeper over the pit, causing the door on the north side to open. "Great teamwork, both of you!" the scout cheered, withdrawing both his Pokémon one at a time.
As the screen transition pushed him into the next room (and Alicia if she followed), their COMPASS signal played, confirming the contents of the ornate blue and yellow chest in front of them. Josh pushed the lid open, and with a metallic creak, the golden, red-jeweled BOSS KEY was theirs for the taking.
You obtained the BOSS KEY! Now you can get into the chamber where the Boss lurks.
The speed demon offered Alicia a high five. "Great stuff! Now, let's high-tail it to the Boss room and prepare."

Alicia let out a cheer of her own as Josh managed to deal with the rusted switch with Granmarg’s assistance. As bad as she felt about not being able to help, progress was progress and she was never going to complain about that. ”Onward! Forward! To glorious victory!” she would exclaim as she raced after the scout. Which might mirror what she’d said at the start just a bit. She needed a big win… Once they were close to the Boss Room, Alicia hummed softly and took a seat, letting Sylvene and Giyun back out in two corners of the room. ”Right. Can Ulysses help out with my two pals here? Sylvene’s worse off at the moment. Meanwhile we can try to figure out what we’ll be dealing with here. We’ve seen Grass, Steel, Rock, Ground, Bug, Poison and even a random Dragon type here… So I think from my end Giyun and Sylvene are going to be vital based on those types. Nushi will be a passable back up. And Ronda will be my last resort I think.”No mention of Tikani, further cementing that… something… had happened in Sector Jarzick. Alicia’s arms shook a bit as she forcefully controlled her emotional state. She didn’t want to break down in front of Josh right as they were about to complete the dungeon. She was not going to let herself be seen in a moment of weakness at this point. This would not break her. She wouldn’t let it. ”Got any thoughts on what exactly we’ll be facing in there?” Alicia asked curiously. ”My immediate thought goes to Amoonguss. But that feels a bit… too obvious?”——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Low Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Josh Devlin

Standing outside the door, Josh did as asked, releasing his Dewgong to patch up Sylvene with a dose of LIFE DEW, followed by Giyun. Their HP wouldn't be healed completely, but it was better than before. "That's all he's got," the speed demon sighed, seeing the ice-type's special skill resources exhausted. "We won't have any heals at all for the boss. Let's make it count."
Thinking about what they could face, Josh shook his head. "There's no sense speculating about it. I'm just bringing in my strongest Pokémon from the beginning." Withdrawing Ulysses for Ares, he smiled at the Charmeleon's enthusiasm.
"I'm ready for a barbecue, what about you?" the fire-type smirked. With a nod, he asked if Alicia was ready one more time before opening the locked door and leading the way into the large, open chamber to the west. Both of them would catch a glimpse of a Decidueye melting into four shadows that charged toward them in an erratic pattern that threatened to deceive their senses. Were the shadows to align with those of Josh, Alicia, or their Pokémon, they would find themselves the target of a LEAFAGE arrow from beneath.

Alicia nodded in thanks regarding Ulysses’ healing Life Dews. Withdrawing Sylvene afterward as an insurance policy, she got up and gave a small fist pulp. ”Right. Only one way to know for sure.”Thus did she follow him in, with the steel dragon marching right behind her. She only just caught sight of the Decidueye before it melded into shadow and divided. Seeing the shadows vary their, approach, she took off running. ”Giyun, don’t step on any of those shadows if you can help it!””Not the easiest ask there, Boss!” Giyun replied as his footsteps pounded at the floor below. Certainly his absurdly lightweight nature meant he was surprisingly fast on his feet, but air resistance was still a factor and Alicia’s steel monolith was not the most aerodynamically shaped. And the shadows didn’t have to factor that into their own speed. Outmaneuvering them was not in the cards forever. And much like the Drilbur, Alicia would eat her non-existent hat if the Decidueye didn’t get faster as it lost HP. But how could they draw it out…? They couldn’t attack it like this. ”Giyun, ready a breaking swipe. Josh, Ares, be ready, I think we have to play chicken with this thing!””The heck do ya mean ‘play chicken with it’!?” Giyun snapped out. ”Would you willingly exit an invulnerable state if you could help it?” Alicia asked. ”I sure wouldn’t and that means we need to flush that Decidueye out somehow! If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the stories I’ve read and media I’ve watched, it’s this. A common weakness of these states is that they break if you attack while in them! Just like the Drilbur from earlier, except we can’t bypass it this time. So I’m going to trigger its attack, then you guys hit it before it can escape again!””That’s crazy talk!” Giyun exclaimed. ”If anyone should play chicken, it’s me! I can take it!””And what am I supposed to do when I reach him?” Alicia asked, paraphrasing a quote from a controversial anime season. Giyun grimaced, and then prepared himself. The Gardener dashed towards one of the shadows now, trying to pick one that would give both of their Pokemon a good chance to attack. Making a diving jump over the shadow, she tried to spend as little time as possible over it, as the leaf arrow flew from the shadow. But the Decidueye was a sharp shot, and Alicia hissed in pain as the arrow scored a glancing blow on her left side before she could clear the danger zone. ”BOSS!” Giyun yelled, before roaring in rage. Using Alicia’s copy of the dungeon item, the steel dragon created a doppelgänger where they were expecting the boss to emerge from after the Leafage. But it was far too direct to catch a ghost like this… ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Fair Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Good Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO

The sharpshooter was relentless, aiming for Alicia with another volley of razorlike grass arrows. Giyun's attack was mighty, but it was also slow. The instant the Decidueye and Duraludon made eye contact, the ghost-type disappeared into the shadows, three of them converging upon Ares and slicing into his red skin with another volley. "Cheap shot..." the Charmeleon hissed before turning around and belching a cone of FLAMETHROWER toward their foe. For a second time, and with instantaneous reaction at that, it disappeared back into its invulnerable state.
A lightbulb blinked on in the scout's head. "Alicia, that's it! Remember how our dungeon treasure can reflect attacks? I think what triggers it to retreat into the floor is eye contact! We have to be able to hit it without seeing it!" Even with their doppelgangers able to reflect attacks off the walls, hitting a target they couldn't directly look at would be much easier said than done...!

Alicia grimaced at that. That would complicate things, wouldn’t it…? But if she could. ”Stay by the walls if you can and let me run the calcs. I’ve got this.” The pinkette assured, smirking. With their combined deductions, this would be their first real chance to tag the boss of the Grotto. ”You trust me, right Giyun?””Completely.” the Duraludon confirmed. And thus did she begin her work. She studied the shadows closely, gauging their relative speed. If they had to do this while their backs were turned, then her timings would have to be near perfect. There was no telling how fast the Decidueye would disappear back into the gloom on its own. ”Giyun! On my signal, send a phantom at that wall there. It’ll have to rebound twice. Ares? Your best bet’s hitting this wall here for a single rebound. We’ll try to pincer it for extra damage or to at least cut off it’s mobility so one of our attacks hit.” Alicia called, hoping the Charmeleon would pay her heed. She could only guarantee that Giyun would answer her. Racing back out to get the Decidueye’s attention, she lured their foe into position. The sharpshooter was relentless, and so they had to make this quick. She couldn’t take many more hits. But there didn’t appear to be another way to draw the archer out of his lookout. Grimacing, she stepped to trigger the volley, leaping away as quickly as she could. It initially looked like she managed to evade… until the arrows rained down upon her instead, forcing the pinkette to bite her lip to control herself. ”Hit it!””She called through the haze, huffing. Giyun roared, sending his phantom image flying. The room shook as the shade crashed once, twice, and soared towards its intended target. The monolith would strike, raking with his mighty Dragon Claw to output as much damage as he could manage in a single strike. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Fair Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Good Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO

The Decidueye squealed loudly, Giyun's reflection landing a gigantic blow upon the grass-type. Fearing another such blow, the guardian disappeared into the floor again, only to spawn behind Josh and charge at him. Seeing his trainer in danger, Raiden neighed and fired off another FLAME CHARGE, crashing into the boss... but not before a SPIRIT SHACKLE rendered his trainer completely immobile, sapping his strength. "Need a hand over--"
Before the scout could finish his sentence, the ghost-type disappeared into the shadows, all of which easily converged on him and his Zebstrika. The blinking-red ghost-type's quadruple SHADOW SNEAK knocked the horse on top of Josh, smashing the trainer into the floor and pinning him beneath his own Pokémon. His model likewise flashing red, he struggled to reach for the electric-type's Poké Ball. "Hur...ry..." he managed, his strength fading as his body thumped from being weighed down by the heavy Pokémon. The only thing that may have been more painful than that was the constant beeping noise playing from his UI, an indicator that his health was low. "There are two ways to make the beeping stop, and one of them is preferred over the other..." he thought, praying Alicia would come to his rescue...

”JOSH!” Alicia called, getting back into motion once she heard the scout and his Zebstrika collapse. ”Giyun, you said you can tank a hit, right?””I’ll cover sparky, don’t worry, but who’s-?” Giyun began, wondering who would take his place on the attack. Alicia tossed out a second Pokeball. With Raiden down, there was room in the mechanics for her to do so. And Ronda appeared in a flash. ”Ronda, on my signal, Bite towards that wall!””Why the wall? Shouldn’t-“ Ronda began, confused. ”No time to explain! Giyun, draw the Decidueye’s fire here! Use some Breaking Swipes and Dragon Claws to get its attention!” The pinkette ordered. ”Right!” Alicia’s monolith replied, stomping around and slamming the ground with his claws and tail to cause a right ruckus to obscure everyone else. With no ability to focus on the critically weakened scout, the Decidueye had no choice but to approach the only target it could sense from its hidden position. And so the Shadow Sneaks all converged upon the steel dragon. Leadage arrows flew, dinging off the Duraludon’s carapace, as the Decidueye emerged for a more powerful Spirit Shackle. ”Now!”Ronda roared and made a chomping motion, before blinking in surprise as a spectral duplicate of him flew from his position. It bounced off the wall he was facing, jaws wide. Then it reflected off the next wall. The Decidueye cried in surprise at the new addition to the battle, and moved to disappear. But it was too late. The phantom Cyclizar’s jaws Bit down hard on the sniper bird’s neck. The combination of its already low health, combined with a Super-Effective attack, obliterated the remaining shreds of stamina the boss had left. With that out of the way, and the boss undergoing whatever death throes it may have from its status as a dungeon’s ending boss, Alicia raced over to the fallen scout. Grabbing Raiden’s fallen Pokeball, she recalled the horse for Josh, before placing the Pokeball back in his hand. She was happy that there was an exception in handling another player’s team in any fashion in the event they were in a position they couldn’t do so themselves. ”Alright, lets get you up and out of here…” Alicia mused, all but picking the scout up on her own. Despite the numerous injuries on her own form that would let him know immediately she was also dealing with Critical Annoyance. ”That… could’ve gone more smoothly, huh?” the Pinkette asked at last. She was pretty sure the Decidueye was down at least. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Fair Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO

Upon being struck by the spectral fangs, the Decidueye's model turned solid white and began shaking, slowly dissoving into pixels on what remained of the wind so far underground. As a series of explosion animations and some loud corresponding sound effects played, the locked doors on the east and west sides opened. Where the Boss once stood was a red, spinning heart. Were either of them to touch it, they would find their hit points, and those of their team, completely restored.
"Thanks... Alicia..." Josh huffed. "Not going into another Instance beneath the recommended level again. That was... way harder than it needed to be." Stretching, he struggled to get to his feet, but was ultimately able to do so with a little stumbling. Touching the spinning heart that looked suspiciously like a health upgrade item from another series he loved, he felt refreshed.
As Josh led the way into the next room, the background music changed to a very short loop that built up an aura of mystique. Above a dais in its center was a tan, hexagonal prism that reflected moonlight at the perfect angle. Inscribed upon the dais was another part of the prophecy:
"Once the chosen one has gathered all eight Essences of Courage, he will become the Hero of Courage, forge the blade of the wind god, and defeat the King of Evil. The fourth Essence of Courage rests at the bottom of the sea, where all the world's roads converge..."
As Josh held the crystal above his head, his and Alicia Westfield 's vision would slowly fade to white, their other senses suppressed as well. Once they could see and feel again, the players would find themselves outside the Moonlit Grotto, the dungeon completely gone due to it being morning. Were they to check their inventories, they would find the PHANTOM DOUBLES to be gone.
"Have we... really been logged in all night?" the young man asked, bewildered. "I... think I should log out and get some sleep."
