After learning just how expensive it was to get a makeover in UNOVR, Josh was on the hunt for treasure. A few extra experience points wouldn't hurt matters, either; after all, he wanted to fly. Evolve Ares into a Charizard and fly.
The Charmeleon had grown up quite a bit since evolving in the Arena. While he was still aggressive, he wasn't anywhere close to as loud and obnoxious as when he was a Charmander. He did, however, discharge flames from his mouth a lot more often, sometimes a bit too close to Granmarg for comfort. The Charmeleon was perched atop Raiden, and Josh was astride Granmarg. While it didn't look quite as comfortable for the fire-type, due to being smaller than his trainer was, he seemed to be able to grab the electric horse's reins just fine. "Not quite ready yet, Ares," Josh said.
"What's the hold-up?" the Charmeleon responded in a snippy voice.
"We're waiting on one more." Not wasting any time, he hopped into his direct messages, noticing Alicia Westfield was online. He dropped the Gardener a reminder message of what they were to do in the evening:
DIRECT MESSAGE> Hey Alicia, where you at? Did you forget? The Moonlit Grotto's about to open. Only opens on a full moon at night, and the sun just finished going down. The reply came quickly, though the content might be a bit of a surprise DIRECT MESSAGE> Sorry! I haven’t forgotten, I just got hit by life. Multiple clients calling in needing work done urgently is a killer. @_@“ Good money though, can’t complain. And reputation’s important. The last few seconds of the timer indicating the Grotto’s opening would be ticking away by the time the Gardener came racing up to Josh, huffing to catch her breath. ”Phew! Just barely…!””At least we’re presentable enough for this affair. Honestly, haven’t you been planning for this for a while now?” Sylvene, recently evolved while the hero-wannabe was out of sight, mentioned as she fluttered nearby. Alicia extended an arm out to her prissy bird, and the Pidgeotto took the offered perch readily, taking the chance to adjust her self-made flower crown with a nudge of wing feathers. ”Would you rather be partnered with a broke beggar?” Alicia shot back to the avian. Sylvene’s only response was a shudder of revulsion at the thought. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Josh Devlin

Upon seeing a ragged-looking Alicia, Josh clicked open Raiden's Poké Ball, the saddled Zebstrika appearing next to her. "You've already run yourself ragged, and we're not even to the instance yet," he remarked, worried that she would wear herself out before they could get far. "Saddle up and save your energy. Raiden's reliable enough. And it's not storming." If Alicia knew Josh well enough, as much as he loved going fast, he was also respectful about pacing. Raiden wouldn't run any faster than Granmarg could gallop.
Regardless of travel arrangements, once they had formally partied with one another, a destination marker would appear on their maps. "I read your message. That's a mood. I've barely had time to log in myself; we've got unlimited email OT where I'm at. Planting season will do that." There was light at the end of the tunnel; once the hot summer months came, orders would die down, and they would be able to catch up. "Not mandatory OT yet, but I think it's coming." ”I’ll be fiiiiine~. I just needed to catch my breath.” Alicia assured with a brief note of sing-song tone. But she still accepted the offered ride all the same. Because frankly, it would’ve been dumb to outright refuse help when there was nothing to gain from the rejection. She did offer a sympathetic wince when Josh shared his own woes regarding life’s trials. ”Oh dear. That’s got to be its own kind of difficulty. I can only hope you’ll be able to keep ahead of things.”She was a bit nervous to be astride Raiden, but she hid it well under the same kind of poker face she’d shown to Josh way back in the saloon. It was time for them to get moving into the dungeon proper. ”I’m glad I got a supporting team mate recently. We just might need it, seeing as we’re a bit under-leveled for this.”——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Josh Devlin

The musical tone made Josh skeptical that Alicia truly was alright, and he would get that confirmation when she climbed onto Raiden's back. She may have been able to feel a pang of static course through her body upon grabbing the electric horse's reins. The Gardener would be free to keep Raiden at whatever speed she felt comfortable with, Josh keeping Granmarg at that same speed. "At least I get to listen to music during my shift. I'm just afraid they'll put me on the phone. I would rather work at my own pace, as long as I'm meeting quality and productivity numbers. Ugh, that word." It was a work buzzword the young man couldn't stand. It was an excuse to make people work more for no benefit.
With the two swift horses ferrying Josh, Alicia, and any small Pokémon that may have been out of their Poké Balls, they reached the red zone line marking the entrance to the Moonlit Grotto. Unable to slow his horse down in time, he went crashing into the markers, his momentum suddenly stopping and causing him to lurch forward from the recoil. The sudden stop was accompanied by a UI message:
Information> You must dismount your Pokémon to proceed any farther.
Josh whined at the seemingly arbitrary restriction. "What do you mean, I can't ride my Pokémon?" Sliding down from his horse, he recalled the rest of his team, other than Raiden, which he would do once Alicia stepped off. "This is a little disappointing. Anyway, you ready? There's a lot of tantalizing treasure and XP in there!"

”Oh yeah, that’s a big plus to handling things in my house. I can listen to whatever I want while I’m getting work done. Which makes things go that much faster.” Alicia mused, before quirking an eyebrow at the fact Josh reacted so negatively to the very thought of ‘quality and productivity numbers’. ”Is this the same kind of ‘ugh’ that I get when I read horror stories of companies trying to justify any number of things with the phrase ‘but we’re a family’?”The number of times she’d caught such a story while doomscrolling was… disturbing to be honest. It was one of the reasons she went out of her way to get herself set up to be self-employed. No boss randomly deciding ‘no, you have to come in even though we hired you for remote work only’ because she was her own boss. Honestly, some people just couldn’t help but throw their weight around where it wasn’t wanted. But soon enough her free ride on Josh’s Zebstrika, and she sighed softly. ”Somehow, I’m not surprised.”She was enjoying resting her aching legs. And trying not to think of how her own stupidity had ripped-Alicia shook her head vigorously, seemingly out of nowhere, and hopped off Raiden. ”Onward! To victory! To glory!”She quickly marched ahead, hoping to hide how her smile cracked in melancholy. Sylvene fluttered close behind her, the Pidgeotto’s expression unreadable as she stood ready to intercept whatever they came across. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3]
And we see a little bit of how the loss that Alicia had to live with because the game’s major systems were stalled by unfortunate delays is eating her… Josh Devlin

The reason for not being able to upgrade became very apparent: within the mushroom labyrinth, quarters were too close to saddle up a Pokémon. The boundaries of each "room" of the Moonlit Grotto seemed to be composed of giant, bioluminescent mushroom stalks. It was brighter here than it would have been in broad daylight. "This place is gorgeous," Josh remarked as he walked toward the entry hall's left side. "How fascinating that this place would be full of night life. No wonder we had to come out here after dark."
Investigating the west side, Josh located a peculiar sight: an array of smaller mushrooms blocking their way. He pulled on one of the stalks, but simply lacked the strength for it to budge. "Ugh!" he cried as he shoved it the opposite direction. When he did so, the stalk poked out of the ground more, displaced from its initial position by roughly the mushroom cap's own width. The new position did them little good. "Probably a shortcut back," the scout speculated as he led the way north, the only other way they could so.
As if on cue, three mushrooms flash-sprouted from the ground, blocking all exits to a room filled with venomous snake Pokémon of multiple species! With loud hisses, they lunged toward Raiden and Sylvene!

”I might be at a bit of a disadvantage in these close quarters…” Alicia mused as they pushed through the opening room. While most of her Pokemon could operate, there was a recent acquisition she had that might end up locked in place… ”But I do agree. It’s quite pretty. Eerie too… like we’re not on Earth anymore…”She then chuckled a bit, smiling. ”If we run into a road block later, we might want to try this again. Unless you’ve been focusing on strength?” If her read of him was right, it was likely at best a secondary priority stat for him. But any more chatter was abruptly, but expectedly, cut short by a sudden barricade and angry hissing. ”Quick Attack! Reposition!” Alicia called, quick as a whip. ”As if I would let these limbless mongrels even graze me!” Sylvene snapped back in answer. As she spoke, she gave a swift beat of her wings. Blurring into motion, she fluttered away from the lunging serpents and dipped back in and out where she could to get her strikes in. ”Shall we dine when we’re through? I’m sure Raiden’s lightning can fry them nicely!” the Pidgeotto added with the bird equivalent of a smirk. ”… Pass…” Alicia answered the mid-battle chatter. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Josh Devlin

Sylvene had the advantage of flying out of range of the foes' attacks. Raiden did not, and with EVASION not being a stat at UNOVR, there was no avoiding their sharp fangs. The Zebstrika whinnied before loosing a DISCHARGE upon the room, which may have struck Sylvene if the Pidgeotto was in range. It was more than strong enough to be a room-clearer after the bird's WING ATTACK softened them up. A "puzzle solved" jingle would play, tailored to each player's settings, as the Pokémon's models faded away and the three shutters opened. "Heh, they even have the Legend of Zelda sound to go with it," Josh chuckled. "Makes sense, since they're both developed by the same studio."
Behind the shutter was a second door, this one with chains and a lock covering it. In the center of the lock was a large keyhole. As Josh approached it, a message would appear on both their HUDs:
Information> You need a KEY to open a door that is locked and chained.
"It really is a Zelda-like dungeon, isn't it..." Josh trailed off as he led the way east. Two Shieldon patrolled the chamber, their AI causing them to move in the adventurers' general direction without appearing immediately hostile. What grabbed Josh's attention more was a giant mushroom stalk that, for some reason, was targetable like a Pokémon. Misclicking, he gave the order for the electric horse to ram into it. The yellow and white inferno of his FLAME CHARGE raced up the stalk, the entire mushroom disintegrating into a pile of ash. As black soot rained down upon Josh and Alicia if she was nearby, a loud bang assaulting their ears, another message would appear on their HUDs:
Information> There was a loud sound far off, like something being knocked loose!
Josh looked around in the direction he thought the noise came from, but couldn't find anything. "What do you think that was?" he asked as he led the way across a mushroom bridge with an out-of-place looking mechanical turnstile, its counterclockwise arrow blinking.

”Huh, I got more of a Metroid feel from my settings.” Alicia mused with a hum, smiling. ”Have some decorum with that electrical nonsense!” Sylvene screeched angrily at Raiden, a few volts sparking off of her feathers. It looked like the Pidgeotto had the misfortune of being just a bit too close when Raiden loosed his Discharge. But not that close, as Alicia doubted she would be quite so noisy if she were hurting significantly. ”Honestly, the disrespect I deal with is-“”Yeah didn’t think about that, you take a chill pill.” Alicia commented, recalling Sylvene and cutting off a protesting squawk. She hummed in thought, before deciding she wanted to keep her anchor in reserve for the moment, releasing Ronda out into the field. ”Hey-o- Oh come on now, how’s a guy gonna gun the engine here!?” It seems her Cyclizar was similarly displeased, if for different reasons. ”Gimme a good runway next time, ya?”Alicia sighed softly at that, smiling. But with the locked door barring their way, she chuckled. ”Definitely more Zelda-like, ya. What I wouldn’t give for an arm cannon and a slew of missiles right about now though.”The patrolling Shieldons could be A Problem later, especially if they heralded a more aggressive Bastiodon deeper in the dungeon. But the sudden charge from Raiden, flames licking his body as he slammed into the mushroom and caused a chain reaction of events, startled her. ”I have no idea! A Breloom’s Focus Punch possibly? But then this place hasn’t shown any mushroom-like Pokemon yet… Maybe it was a support structure for something? As much as that looked like a Misclick, we might want to keep doing that. That didn’t exactly sound like a ‘doom on you’ in the Game Over sense…” Alicia trailed off at that for a moment, before eep’ing a bit as Ronda nudged her. ”Right, right, the point is, as bad as that sounded, we were neither immediately penalized nor given any indication in the pop-up that doing that more will result in penalty. So it might be Progress!”She pointedly tried to drive thoughts of one stage in one particular game. Unrelated to the Pokemon franchise the player, after having the freedom to blast like crazy in earlier stages, suddenly had to watch their fire or risk a potentially sudden and very inevitable Game Over via loss of all stocked lives. ”Don’t dat dere platform look mighty weird amongst the rest of this place?” Ronda asked with a hum, indicating the turnstile in question. ”It does, and I’m seeing multiple paths…” Alicia agreed with her current Pokemon companion. ”Let’s see how far it turns, and go down whichever path opens up, hmm?”Of course, she’d wait for Josh to be in the turnstile sector with her before she made any move to push the turnstile. If her assumption was right, after a certain point it would lock and the arrow that was blinking would flip, indication it could only go back the other way. And despite the size, to contain them and their Pokemon, the Gardener wouldn’t show any real strain when it came to making the contraption move. Whether that would be by design, or because her Strength stat was high enough, Alicia wasn’t sure and didn’t particularly mind what the answer was. ——————————————————————— Active Member Switch! Josh smiled back; he knew exactly what jingle Alicia must have heard. He wasn't surprised Sylvene was upset; being caught in the Discharge would have dealt a lot of damage. It was a strong and super-effective attack. As useful as area attacks were, they had their downsides when traveling with a party. It seemed Ronda was similarly upset, presumably from the tight quarters. "Wow, sounds like you got the short end of the stick with your Pokémon," Josh remarked. "Mine are obedient, if a little rash."
As Alicia suggested that it was a support structure, Josh tilted his head upward. Surely enough, there was something large-looking above and to the north of them! "You're right, though. I think we should look for more of these and knock 'em out!"
The stronger of the two trainers led the way, Josh helping out some as the duo pushed the turnstile counterclockwise. It locked after bring rotated 90 degrees, the bioluminescent indicator light changing from blue to orange and pointing in a clockwise direction. "Aha, that's it," Josh said as he walked east up a short slope. "If we can access it from three sides, we should be able to go anywhere we want."
Before them was a dense field of tall mushrooms, including a giant one that went all the way up to the area's upper bounds. Without immediate direct access to this one, it seemed there was a puzzle to solve. "I can target the discolored mushrooms. You have any ranged attacks that could split those stalks? I can get to the back with Raiden if you can clear the way."

Alicia nodded softly as she considered their options upon entering the next room. ”That locked door probably blocks the pathway to the third angle of approach. Which means there should be a key somewhere in here.”The Gardener, however, couldn’t help herself. ”And you should’ve seen Sylvene at the beginning. She was so much worse the first time I worked with her… I was legitimately wishing I had taken AP back then.”When the thought of a ranged cutting attack was uttered, Alicia immediately reached for a certain someone’s ball. A Magical Leaf would have been perfect for this, finding targets without fail. Her fingers squeezed through empty air. Reminding her of the loss. A tear fell from her eye, and she quickly wiped it away and grabbed a different Pokeball. ”Nushi.” Alicia intoned, a bit of her energy lost. ”YIPEEEEEEEE!” Nushi cried out as he emerged, swimming freely through the air. It was fortunate that the Veluza had more than enough energy for all of them. ”What’s the play, lady?””Ready some Aqua Cutters. Fire on my mark. Try to use your vantage point to get around obstacles, alright?” Alicia ordered quickly, stalking her way around the field. Looking for what she should have shot down. ”Sorry, can’t go that high.” Nushi called back as he ran into a flight ceiling pretty quickly. ”Noted.” Alicia confirmed. There was an order to things then. And it likely started there. ”Fire!”Nushi made a keening cry and fired the Aqua Cutter off. The stalk Alicia indicated, looking just a bit more rotted and half-dead than the others, was on the outer edge of the field near a set of statues. And the gardener smirked as it revealed a partial opening behind it when it fell. The remainder of the stalk was going to prevent her from actually easily walking into the opening… but she could see her next target from there so it didn’t matter. ”Need an angle on this one, hover over me.”Nushi followed her commands to the letter, and launched another Aqua Cutter on Alicia’s order. Then if Alicia was right… there was an indent on the far side of the field. She slipped into it, her Veluza following her, until they reached what appeared to be a dead end. ”Alicia?” Nushi asked as they looked stuck. ”That last one you cut down paved the way for me to do this” Alicia explained, planting her foot on the stalk that had been supported by the mentioned target. With a grunt of effort, Josh would hear (or see if he was following her as well) the stalk groaned and crackle under her strength, before giving way entirely and opening up a nook. That gave enough room for her and Nushi to find an angle to attack one more target, and the Aqua Cutter tore through it with spectacular accuracy. ”Alright, now what?” Nushi asked, curious. ”You’re on overwatch with Ronda. There’s another stalk we’ll need to push over.” Alicia answered, coming back around. With a grin, she planted her foot on the last remaining obstacle, shoving it down and out of the way with similar ease and at last opening up the path for Raiden to Flame Charge the discolored support stalk. She smirked as she got out of the way, presenting the opening to Josh. ”Tada! I’m glad I’ve been focusing on strength!”——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Good Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Josh Devlin

"But are you glad you ended up with Sylvene now?" Josh tried to reassure Alicia. The Pidgeotto was a valuable ally. What was taking his so long to evolve? Pazuzu was still a Pidgey, and hers was evolved despite them both getting theirs at the same time. Did she really spend that much time grinding encounters?
The Veluza that Alicia sent out made Josh jealous. "I just dipped into Swimmer, too. What a slick ride you've got there... at least for the seas." Not that Ulysses was disappointing, but that fish could swim fast. He watched Alicia and her Pokémon dance around the room, painstakingly opening the path for Raiden to charge. "On it now!"
With another FLAME CHARGE, the odd-colored mushroom disintegrated into a pile of ash, the UI giving another confirmation that felt like Progress:
Information> There was a loud sound far off, like something being knocked loose!
The impact also knocked a SMALL KEY loose, the sound of a metallic clink that was way louder than it should have been attracting Josh's attention. Falling nearer to him, he picked it up and held it high above his head.
Information> You obtained a SMALL KEY! It can be used to open any one locked door or block in this dungeon.
"Jackpot," Josh nodded, passing the key off to Alicia, who seemed more excited to open up the third channel she had mentioned. "Be careful if any of those snake Pokémon respawn. But it looks like the turnstile shouldn't be a problem anymore. At least in theory. I didn't see a locked door on the left side, anyway..."

”… Jury’s still out.” Alicia answered. ”She’s pulled her weight in gold recently. But she’s still insufferable. Just… now she’s insufferable towards others.””As for Nushi… I kinda just threw ‘New Water Pokemon’ in Google and went from there.” Alicia admitted with a shrug. ”I had no idea what I was getting into. He’s been… something. And the reason I dipped into Swimmer as well. Letting them operate out of the water is too valuable.”The backtracking was quiet though. The turnstile gave way to their combined efforts. The Shieldon duo continued to meander vaguely in their direction, still easy enough to evade. The snake Pokemon that ambushed them earlier were no where to be seen, implying they didn’t respawn. Maybe they had to leave the dungeon entirely in order to respawn those serpents. ”Iiiiiiiiit’s too quiet~…” Nushi whispered conspiratorially as he floated beside the two trainers, his fishy eyes darting too and fro. And soon enough they would return to that locked door. As expected, Josh would be able to unlock it with the key they had acquired. Though the Gardener would be surprised if the key survived the usage. ”Quiet you.” Alicia replied to her Veluza. ”That’s the kind of thing that brings-“She was surprised as a Gulpin suddenly emerged from a crack in the floor. The budding hero yelped and jumped back, as Nushi let out a screech and interposed himself between her and the slime. But… aside from the jump scare, it seemed to be happy to just wobble around and hop aimlessly. ”It’s actually kind of cute like that.” Alicia commented, unaware that there were other potential hazards fluttering about the room, at least two Skiplooms spinning and floating with no cares at all. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Good Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Josh Devlin

Josh was happy all of his Pokémon thus far had been cooperative. He would be distraught if he captured an incredibly fast Pokémon, only for it to refuse to wear a saddle. "Veluza are... really fast. And they're psychic-types, so they have harnesses built into their minds. It should be great for you. Once we recover from getting out of here, we should go to Ostellia and explore all those underwater areas before the raid drops... whenever that is," Josh suggested. After all, the world wouldn't be like this forever; UNOVR was living and breathing as much as the real world was.
It was far from aimless; the Gulpin seemed to be after Josh, not Alicia. Perhaps they were afraid of her psychic fish. Regardless of the reason, they were not quick, and the scout felt prudent to conserve their resources for deeper into the dungeon. "Shouldn't there be a map somewhere around here?" he asked as he jogged eastward, completely missing the inaccessible burnable stalk he could have seen around a corner.
As Josh manipulated the turnstile to go north from it, he saw yet another inaccessible stalk, this one on the other side of a petrified mushroom cap that formed a gap too narrow to fit around. Josh peered up where the stalk was, noticing a giant mushroom cap above them swaying. "Looks like it's being held up by these four stalks," he suggested. "We just need a way get to them."
With the north door locked, there were only two ways to go: east, or back to the western stalk room and down into a pit to the lower level. Waving for Alicia to head east, the lights suddenly dimmed, other than a beam of moonlight shining on a switch in the northeast corner. Feeling it was Progress, the Swimmer and Kindler walked toward it and stomped on it with one foot. A thicket of roots sealed the room's entrance, a rumbling sound and a mild tremor following it. "Get ready for battle..." Josh muttered, holding a Poké Ball in his hand.
