Laguna was not prepared for how slow the journey was going to be. She had hoped, at least, that safety would find them at the end of the light, but it seemed fate had something else in mind for them.
It was like the world itself was moving in slow motion as the tentacles began to rise up from the depths. Her own breath caught in her chest, terrified to make a single, sudden move less they strike. But it was too late. They were after them, and like a moth to a flame the Nihilego had wrapped one of its tentacles around her Brionne, Marina.
All the seal was able to get out was a squeal of pain before the toxins worked its effect and she began to grow limp.
"Marina!" Laguna immediately cried out, her heart breaking as she stretched a hand out. Her first Pokémon, her first friend in this world. If something happened to her again, she would never be able to live with herself.
There were worse fates than being consigned to the Everworld.
"Don't give up! Don't you dare give up!" Ice began to form at the tips of her fingers, but it seemed like the Nihilego, playful as ever, waved her own Pokemon around. There was no clear shot, there was nothing she could do without putting her at risk.
There was nothing she could do.
She was struggling not to give up.
"How dare you take her!" A voice suddenly called out, causing Laguna's head to whip around as she noticed Sheldon her Squirtle, long more of an athlete than a battler, appear beside her. "You can't take away Coach like that!"
"I agree," said another appearing Pokemon. Hoppy the Froakie appeared from her Pokeball, resting atop the Squirtle's shell. For once, the two Pokemon were actually fully cooperating. "Are you thinking what I am thinking?"
"Stop talking, let's do this fool."
"You're the fool." The Froakie responded, but there was a softness to their smile as the two of them immediately leaped into action as they swam forwards.
All the while, Professor Ash was suddenly grabbed and pulled down. The cry of her Runerigus snapped Laguna out of her stupor, fear gripping at her heart but inspiring her to act. She had to protect Ash, everything relied on her. All that woman ever wanted to do is the right thing, she could not abandon her.
A glance was spared to her Pokémon, watching as Sheldon tucked his head and legs were sucked into his shell, propelled with a powerful Water Gun from Hoppy. He shot forwards like a missle, a Rapid Spin swirling the water around him as he'd slam his shell straight into the bulbous glass-head of the Nihilego holding onto Marina.
An inhuman cry was let out from the beast as the three began to combat, and Laguna could only put her faith in them as she suddenly swam down.
She couldn't do anything else. The pain of failure, eating away at her like a knife twisting deeper into her chest.
She couldn't protect Ash, She couldn't protect her Pokemon, she couldn't change the world. That pain continued to dig away, only making her mad. Furious. Her first instinct was to give up, but her second instinct, the true feelings, was of raw, violent fury.
The feeling of getting angry at things that seemed like she couldn't change was not a new feeling, but at least here she knew for a fact there was always something she could do.
She couldn't change the world, not on her own. But Ash could, and did, many times. They needed everyone they could get. Her and Orion couldn't do this alone. She pulled up her UI mid-swim, typing the smallest message she could as Ash continued to descend. Hoping that somehow, wherever Verai was, they'd be able to come help.
As she desperately swam, heat began to pour off of her in waves, nearly boiling the water around her. It was all Laguna could do to watch as Ash was puppeted down to the Doortals once again as her anger poured.
"NO!!!"
Laguna cried out as loud as she could, a sudden Sunsteel Strike carrying her down at a blinding speed, hoping to slam straight into the Nihilego that had captured the professor. Only to be just a second too late. Light blinds her as the Doortal activates and she slams straight into the ground beside it.
Her fists clench together at her side, slamming into the ground as she looks up at her Pokémon and Orion still battling. She failed, but she couldn't dwell on it. She could only hope everyone would forgive her.
"Ash is taken!!" She'd shout loudly, "We need to follow! Now!"
Up above, Laguna's own Pokémon had seemingly made up their mind. Their eyes would flick to the barely moving Brionne before back at each other, barely dodging the Nihilego tentacles in the water. Neither of them were combatants, they didn't have the experience, nor the energy to keep going much longer. But Marina had plenty of combat experience, Laguna needed her.
Laguna needed Marina, Professor Ash needed them too.
A silent agreement was made, spoken solely through the eyes of two individuals who knew each other so well, months and months of rivalry had led them to this single moment. "It's time," Hoppy said, and the two of them nodded even as tears began to spill and join the salty ocean waters around them.
"Tell Laguna, we tried our best Coach."
Suddenly, a Pound and Tackle would both slam the two Pokémon directly into the tentacle that was restraining Marina, causing it to loosen up around the Brionne who was dropped unceremoniously down below.
"N-no-" Marina spoke weakly as she was released. "Y-you fools, I'm not worth this." She was trying her best to swiftly regain control of her bodily functions to protect them, but it was too late. The Nihilego was seemingly content gaining two for the price of one, and with multiple tentacles suddenly wrapping around them, it would shoot upwards as fast as it could.
Meanwhile, all Laguna could do is watch from all the way on the ocean floor, even more tears dripping from her face. She couldn't control her emotions, crying and furious pounding on the door at the same time. She couldn't even make the choice to rescue them, they had made the choice for her.
"God Damn it- Orion!!! We gotta go! Now! Ash can't wait!"
And even as her trainer cried, Marina was crying all the way as she furiously swam to the bottom with every ounce of energy she still had left, despite her stiffness. She had died before, she had went out sacrificing herself so that others could live. But this... The pain stung worse than the tentacles did.
They wouldn't have needed to sacrifice themselves if she had just been a little bit more aware, a little bit more... better.
But just like everything else, it was too late.

Things were now calm. This was the period of being treated well, the calm before the storm. Verai was used to this. He took the kindness gracefully, but not greedily. Kitten was in his lap, sharp and tense, bristled even as she pressed against him.
The words washed over him, calm despite the harrowing meaning behind it. Verai sighed softly, smoothing Kitten's fur once more. "It's time for us to go, little one." He said, Kitten's eyes bright. The litten nodded, and let herself be drawn back into her pokeball, Verai slowly standing.
He felt the air shift, lightning crackling over his armor, sparking over his skin, snarling thunder and wind ruffling his hair. And, now, when he drew forth the Spellbook, the pages went wild, fluttering madly.
"Thank you for the opportunity, C.L.A.W."
The attack tore at the building, ripping apart stone. Verai tore himself free, in the wake. He moved quickly down Briarbane's streets, calculating as he went. The junkyard, the doortals- most of his pokemon would not be of help, there. But-
Ya'ath emerged in an unsettling glow, as if the red light of his faction was gleaming against them. <Is this worth the sacrifice?>
Yes, yes- it always was.

Foreign light beams through the Doortal, spotlighting Laguna and making the deep waters wriggle with strange refraction. The players race after Ash, and as they push through the bismuth doorframe, a sense of relief washes over them. Aggression melts away in the face of monumental homecoming. Nostalgia, injected directly into your veins. Joy, as rich in this alien atmosphere as Oxygen is in ours.
This is not your world. But nothing has ever felt this much like home.
Clouds of coral bore through the sky, leaving neon trails. The triple suns overhead cast contrasting shadows over the spongy ground, dyeing it cyan, magenta, and vantablack.
Looking ahead, the ground bends in unfamiliar angles, as if the landscape was made without regard for physics. Humming shapes of solid light waft past on the ozone breeze, their tangerine edges fractured with time. Tricorn cliffs with play-dough sides host inverted forests of crystalline ferns.
And dancing through the alien landscape, moving with the music of the spheres and the grace of the stars, is System Admin:ProfessorAsh. BONUS: CYCLE 4SHOW ME THE DOOR: PLASMA STORY QUEST The Professor seems younger, somehow. Giddy. Carefree. The Nihilego sits comfortably on her head, and as a tentacle falls across her face she brushes it away like a strand of hair. When she speaks, there is a strange echo, as if someone else is speaking at the same time.
[tangent="The voice can't follow this one now!"]"You followed me?"[/tangent] she asks, her voice light, distant, and two-tone. Emotions cross her face like shooting stars. Surprise, joy, fear. Her expression calms, settling into a jubilant smile.[tangent="This one thought it might never see this place again..."]"I'm glad that you're here. I wasn't sure we'd meet again."[/tangent]
She spins as if in slow-motion, a pirouette buoyed up by the impossible gravity of this world. [tangent="Home! Home! Home!"]"Fascinating, isn't it? This Pokemon's homeworld. Some planet out beyond the stars. It seems so happy...it's been gone a long time."[/tangent] As Ash speaks, the tentacles of the creature wiggle and flex, as if Ash and her new companion are about to swim upwards into the glowing atmosphere.
You feel the excitement too, as a note of vibrant energy within the symphony of calm and respite. It sings in your bones, telling you to jump and play and live the life you have, now that it is truly yours. The emotion from the Nihilego is so strong it's tangible. Giddying. You sense this is not an attempt to manipulate, coerce or control: the alien creature is really, truly glad to be here. To be home. Like a long-realized dream.
[tangent="It's finally quiet..."]"I can hear it, you know,"[/tangent] Ash continues dreamily, and the look on her face almost makes you cry. [tangent="The connection feels... far away, now. This one can hear itself think."]"For the first time, I can understand a Pokemon. It's wonderful. True connection, from one mind, one heart, to another. Even psychic Pokemon cannot achieve such a complete union. I feel… reborn."[/tangent]
She stretches out her hands to look at the backs of them and you see something chilling: the tentacles of the Ultra Beast have begun to take on the color of Ash's skin, and vice versa. A blueish, slightly transparent hue. She is being slowly absorbed— or else transfigured.
[tangent="This one's thoughts are free once again."]"I know what I have to do,"[/tangent] Ash says, and you feel the pieces click into place.
[tangent="Thank you for bringing this one home."]"Thank you for bringing me this far."[/tangent] She drops her hands, and her smile. She suddenly seems more like her old self. All business. [tangent="But this one is afraid..."]"But I'm afraid I can't come with you. This Pokemon needs me. There's a… voice."[/tangent]
She hesitates, then continues, words coming faster now. [tangent="DON'T GO!"]"The voice is something only it can hear. It's so loud, it has to… do something. Collect. Lights, and other Pokemon, and various things. If it tries to run away, or comes back empty-handed…"[/tangent]
Nihilego's fear suddenly stings through the air like string instruments.
Ash stiffens in its grip, unable to move or even speak, until the creature's terror fades. The rigor loosens on her limbs, and she continues, short of breath. [tangent="It keeps this one prisoner. It will take you too, soon. There is nothing but fear in the New World."]"The voice wouldn't let it leave on its own. But I can block it out. I can protect it, if I just…"[/tangent]
She trails off, as if listening to something far away, then turns back to you. Her tone is distant. [tangent="Get away, while you still can."]"It's time for you to go."[/tangent]

Verai cannot see the world around him. He cannot see the soft-pink clouds, the curling wafts of pink-orange-buttercup. He cannot see the shadows cast, CMYK hues sprawling around them. He cannot see the strange landscape, the floating light walls, the hanging forests.
But he can feel it all, the warmth of the suns over his skin, the singing chimes of the strange shapes, the breaths of soft sugar and exhales of afternoon sunsets. And, ever-present, he can feel the desire clinging to his skin, a desperation to be, to exist, to live and grasp and hold everything he could, and never let go.
It is the mirror of an emotion that possessed him before, but where that was fueled by fear and loss, this is something else- something that sang and gleamed like starlight.
Ash spoke, and the Nihilego dreamed, the words and thoughts curling in the air and around in his mind, colors and sensations and wishes. Verai listened, every word pulling at him like spiderweb puppet strings.
But he could feel the pulse in the air, as Ash studied her hands. A wrongness that seeped into bone and earth. A change, in the way that voice and sound echoed off the Nihilego, and Ash.
DON'T GO
It keeps this one prisoner.
Verai closed his eyes, letting the emotions wash over him, breathing softly until it passed. Voices swirled, and he waited until there was a breath of silence.
"I know what it is like to live in fear." He started, voice soft, letting it flow on the tremulous waves of emotion. "To have your life dictated by another. One without your best interests at heart. One that seeks to control, to confine. To use you for their own end." Pain, resignation, relief flooded from him. "I lived there my whole life. It has only been recently, a few breaths, that I have been free. I know your pain, your fear."
"Under their song, none of us could get out. We were told as such, we knew. They were unstoppable. But... We banded together. And we were able to do things we thought impossible."
He looked towards the Nihilego again, something admiring in his voice. "You seem stronger than any of us were. If you and your family worked together... I know there's nothing you all couldn't accomplish. Especially... with all of us able to lend our hands to help you."
His attention moved to Ash, still trapped in Nihilego's grasp. "I know- I know what it is like to have someone. Someone who swears to protect you. Someone who you swear to protect." His voice fell soft, again, a cold-lake pain draining into mourning. "I had that person. I told myself we could escape our Voice together. I- I let myself dream, of dancing here together."
Verai sucked in a soft breath, to still the hammering of his heart. "It doesn't- It won't help. Staying here with Ash- Staying here with the Nihilego- It will not help you. It- You are stronger apart, where you can compensate for the other's weakness. You can protect each other, and make each other stronger. But by sticking so close, like you are now, you- you open yourselves up to weakness. To pain. Pain far worse than if you were separate."
Agony rang from his voice, thrumming in the low tones of a gong. A clarion-call, a finality. The calling of a time of death.
"Let us help you. Not the one, that you are now- let us help both of you. Let us help your family, your coworkers, your allies. Let us help you both." Verai entreated, extending a hand. An ask for help, an offering, a promise. |

God it was so tempting.
It was as if they had found the garden of Eden drowned beneath the horrors of the world in gods great flood. Noah and his Arc might have survived, but they'd missed a change to return to paradise. It was everything billed and more, with the warmth of the sun that would burn not your tender flesh for basking in its glow for too long. The softness of a breeze that echoed the passion of the briefest and most tenderest of kisses from lost lovers brought back. In the distance he swore he heard the gentle singing of a family member long gone, and the scent of his mother's cooking carried on from afar.
God it was so FUCKING tempting.
And the professor looked like she was having the time of her fucking life, like she hadn't been just horrifically paralyzed, puppeted, and pilfered off to this picturesque planet. But who could produce a proper cause for precaution in this predicament, practically more picnic than the problem is was presented to be. Yet pragmatic philosophers peered past the present, preparing plans for phantom pains. Proper philanthropy required perspiration, and a preparedness to pass on personal comfort.
Fate called on the Prophet, the Primadona, and the Poet to purloin the Professor.
They would need to connect their hearts, and make first contact with this alien savior, who held the fate of the world in it's tentacles.
"I know the pain of losing the ones you love all to well..." Orion called out, clenching his fingers into fists as he let that sorrow radiate off of him, the air seemed like it conducted powerful emotions, or perhaps it was the psychic link of Nihelago, perhaps it was a placebo he would never know. All he could do was open his heart and let his emotions flow out into the world around him as he spoke, either through his aura, actions, and articulations. "It hurts, and it's a hole that never quite heals and leaves you feeling desperate to escape it, for any sort of relief. I get it, I really do." Tears began to roll down his face in defiance of the beautiful world around him, not for anything within it, but for the fact that it had to be rejected.
At least for now.
"But if what you speak of is true, if some voice has your family ensnared in some sort of siren song, something sinister is at work and we have to band together to stop it, not just escape it!" As he spoke his soul began to burn away at the sorrow radiating off of him, a seething passion shining through like a lantern in a foggy forest that provided a subtle sense of Deja Vu, like we'd sung this song and danced this dance before. "I've faced the impossible before, be it a storm that seeks to consume an island so many call home, or a kegger corrupted into a killing floor, dreams of dark delusion and strife along the stratosphere. I KNOW that we will defeat this siren song," He held a hand out and clenched his fist, flexing his muscles. "Because we've done it time and time again, making the impossible possible, but we didn't just get to do that by being lucky, or stumbling around, no." He shook his head, his eyes tingling with resolve. "We did it by working together, both people and pokemon, uniting to be more than just the sum of our parts!" His outstretched hand turned and thumped his chest.
"But we need to professor. I think I have an idea of what this voice is, and what it's doing. If your people are being controlled, probably because of the corruption in our world. Someone likely tried to save their own hide by finding you all and using some sort of device or something to puppet you all into a platoon of corruption killers. I've seen the fights with my own eyes, it's on sight with them and they're lean mean fighting machines. Whatever is controlling them is likely still around somewhere, and we're going to need the professor to help to discover, discern, and disable it and free all of your friends and family. You don't have to live out here alone, and could you really stand to be the only member of your species free? Please!" His hand would once again reach out, mirroring Verai's proffered palm. "Open your heart to me and I'll show you a million reasons to fight for this world and ours, while it might hurt now, and our road will be perilous, the future we seek cannot be won without strife. But when all is said and down we will beat our swords into plowshares and plant trees who's shade our descendants will seek refuge during beautiful carefree summer days under. Join us, let the professor go, so we can make the world a better place!"
Orion bared his soul to the beast, pleading with it to see his point. All he could think about was saving those they'd lost, those that the Nihelago lost, to find a way to forge a happy ending for all involved, no matter how much pain he would have to suffer in order to make it happen. He had to make up for all of his mistakes, and live up to the sacrifice that had allowed him to get this far.

Laguna's anger carries her forwards, the moment that she would accept the loss is the moment that she would break. And yet, stepping inside the alien realm, Laguna slowly began to melt. Emotions wash over her very soul in a way that feels oddly familiar. She can feel the positive emotions bubbling within her heart, but that doesn't stop the tears beginning to spill down her cheeks as she listens to both Ash and the Nihilego communicate.
It should be such a joyous occasion for Ash to finally connect with a Pokémon. So why did it feel like they were moments from losing her for good?
She struggled to control her thoughts and emotions, dwelling over her words as Verai spoke about fear. About fighting together to make the world better for all, working together. She listened to orioncayge speak of defeating the Voice, whatever was controlling the Ultra Beasts, and how they needed Professor Ash to make that happen.
It was all too much. The tears of joy and sadness mixed together, and finally she felt like she had to speak up. She had to share her peace. She might not get the chance to again.
"We are Plasma," Laguna spoke with a shaky voice. Not to Ash, her eyes were locked onto the Pokémon itself. "We are a group dedicated to making the world, The New World, a better one. None of us come from The New World, and yet each of us are here because we believe in what it could be."
She takes one step forwards, hands resting over her heart as she struggles to force her words free. "I'm sorry that you have suffered so, and we would never dream of forcing you to act against your will. Consent, Communication, Agency. These are three of our founding principles. If- If both you, and Ash, wish to stay here, then we won't fight you. We can't."
Her heart is pounding out of her chest, threatening to overwhelm her. Her Brionne slowly manages to float over, visibly still injured themselves, and just presses up against her Trainer's side to silently encourage her to keep going.
"B-but!" She stumbles forwards another step. "Professor Ash, she is the one who put together this group. She reached out to us, pulled us together, showed us what kindness in this world really means. Search her heart, I'm sure you can. See that genuine thoughtfulness inside her. She cares so much about every single living being."
"... And that is exactly why we need her. I trust nobody else to guide us, to keep us going."
She frowns heavily, her legs stumbling as she trips on the alien landscape, falling to her knees. "You... You tell us to get away while we can. But we won't, and we can't. It would go against everything we believe in, if we do not help every single one of you free themselves from this Voice. Now that we know, we have to. We would all perish before we can even think of giving up."
Her eyes would finally lock onto the human beneath the jellyfish exterior. "Professor Ash... we have to help. You know we do. We can't do it without you."
"I won't ask you to abandon each other. I wouldn't dream of condemning you back to the Voice, either." Still on her knees, Laguna does the only thing she can think. She slowly pulls the Golden Pokéball off her hip, showcasing the broken seal in front of her as her gaze drifts back to the Nihilego. "I don't know if you know what this is, this is a Pokéball. Pokémon, like you, are able to go inside of it, and with the seal broken you can leave whenever you wish. To never be controlled against your will, ever again."
"I-" She chokes up, once again her Brionne moving up to hug her chest and Laguna immediately hugged her back too. "Professor Ash... She has one on her. You can continue to stay with her, even when you're not as one. Please, I beg of you in the moments you can understand us. Come with us, let us prove we can help. Join her as we fight to make the world a better place with every last breath we have. Please... have Hope. Don't run away, we need you too."
Silence falls over her, and in the end Laguna just closes her eyes and lets out a long, shaky breath as she fights to wipe the tears from her eyes.
"... And if the two of you decide to leave, to come back here, we won't stop you. We're just asking for a chance. We've fought gods and saved them too, defeated a being that tried to remove everything from existence itself, but this is different. If we're going to figure out how to stop The Voice... we need you, Nihilego, too." |

CONCLUSIONSHOW ME THE DOOR: PLASMA STORY QUESTVerai feels the bonds. Feels the strings of emotion, once cut and now restored, anchoring the Nihilego to this world. Like any puppet, it fears those links being cut. Not just for the sheer terror of being free, but of being set adrift in an unknown world with no guidance.
Not to mention the fear of the master returning to pick up the strings.
As the trio approach, the Nihilego bonded to Ash grows tense. Jelly becomes like steel as it grips tighter, terrified of the prospect of being split from salvation. [tangent="This one must not go back."]"Impossible. I cannot abandon it."[/tangent]
Verai's empathy makes the air quiver, not with fear but the understanding of it. With the memory of subjugation. Deep dread made less sickening by time. It is not a pleasant emotion, but it is a promise of future respite.
His offer of help and outstretched hand give the message of hope. Of a growing force that might be able to birth a future worth fighting for.
Orion's sorrowful words vibrate the air, making the creature shudder. [tangent="The others..."]"More of them?"[/tangent] For a moment, the rush of freedom is soured by memories of its kind. [tangent="This one wishes the others to be free."]"How can we save them all?"[/tangent]
It sees no need to split, no reason to give itself up to the voice. Why can't Ash stay here? Why can't they stay as one, free from the voice?
Orion offers his hand too, and the promise of companionship feels stronger now. Tentatively, the Nihilego's grip on Ash relaxes.
Laguna speaks of a New World, but there are so many new worlds these days. The word Communication sticks in the air, digging into the brains of Ash and the Nihilego.
Ash, who can communicate with Pokemon for the first time.
The Nihilego, who is finally cut off from the forced communication of the voice.
Both have taken deep solace in their bond.
Laguna shows understanding of the safety of such a connection, and instead of promising distant resolution, or professing a greater need for a part of this connection, offers a solution.
And when she offers her hand, the Nihilego wriggles. Another friend. Another contact. Not one savior, come to pull it from the whispered thrall, but four, and the promise of many more who will silence the voice forever.
[tangent="Stay with this one?"]"Bring it with us?"[/tangent] Ash asks, and a shadow of frustration crosses her face. The Nihilego on her tenses, then relaxes. Its tentacles wriggle, unsure, confused.
Ash draws her Golden Pokeball, its seal is cracked like a dropped egg. [tangent="Will this one stay with you? This one must not fall under control again."]"Would you think less of me? For turning back to the old ways at the first sign of trouble?"[/tangent]

Verai, who felt the strings of this creature wound so tightly around this alien world and Ash herself, feels the tension ebb from those steely connections. One by one, those frantic, clenched bonds bend and, with infinite care, reattach to the Pokeball.
Wish a flash of light the Nihilego disappears inside the golden ball. Ash staggers, as if half of the blood inside her has been drawn, and she falls to the ground.
You catch her before she hits the technicolored mud, and notice that her lips are set in a thin yet determined smile.
