The moment she’d rematerialized after the dreaded > WHITE OUT! ALL POKEMON DEFEATED! message had faded, she’d checked up on the pair she’d brought into Sector Jarzick immediately to ascertain their status.
Tikani’s icon having been grayed out sent a spike of horror and panic through her heart. A part of her had acknowledged that it was possible. She wasn’t so daft as to not keep an eye on all of UNOVR’s mechanics. Even those she’d hoped she never had to interact with.
She wasted no time in slamming her hand down on the prompt that would take her to Seta’s domain.
’How stupid can I be…?’ she asked herself in the confines of her own mind as she shifted into the vermillion halls. Given this was an after life, her grimly set mind imaged it was painted red by the blood of the fallen. Blood she had contributed to…
’What kind of hero banks on someone else being strong enough…?’ she wondered, tears pricking her eyes as she took off running. Whether to find her first partner proper or the master of the realm, she didn’t really know. She wasn’t in the right state of mind to plan out what she was doing.
’How can she ever believe in me again, when I failed to believe in the one I needed…?’ One more party member. That was all she had needed. One single addition to the team and she not only would’ve been able to keep fighting the wire-monster that called the sector home, she likely would’ve made it out without even Whiting Out at all. He didn’t have to be effective, just being there would have been enough.
’She would have been fine if I’d brought everyone.’
She skidded to a stop as the formless figure appeared before her. Streaks of red now marred her face from where she wiped away the tears to clear her vision. She had to try. She had to…
”… so that I can at least try to apologize…” she murmured. She hadn’t even realized she said that out loud, before looking up to the effective lord of the afterlife. Not of Death itself, but that which lies beyond… The question it posed to her chilled her blood.
”Seta… I’m not arrogant enough to think Tikani would want to return after what has occurred. Not anymore… not after deliberately leaving behind a part of our strength by deeming him unreliable. For directly causing this outcome as a result of that choice. I don’t even ask for her return to be longer than a day. Just… enough to plead to her. To apologize for what had happened… and let her decide.”
A good hero needed her partner at the end of the day. No battle was without risk of course, but this amount of risk was beyond the pale. She could only hope her starter would forgive her…
