Even before he'd had a chance to leave the lab, quests were popping up in his field of view. DonKiwi marveled at them, turning his head this way and that to see if they moved with him before jerking his body to the side to see if he could get behind them. After failing in this, he finally stopped to read the text proper.
Tutorial Quest: Pumped Up Kicks Accept? Y N
"Hm, I guess I do need a tutorial. I still can't figure out how to even open this thing." He turned the Pokeball—courtesy of that spooky woman made of darkness—over in his hands. "Sure, I accept," he said without looking up again. The prompt disappeared, replaced by a blinking marker indicating where he should go. Don, however, was too busy trying to shove his fingernails into the seam of the Pokeball in order to pry it open manually to notice. Eventually, another prompt popped up with a soft ding—just enough to grab his attention.
Your active quest objective is indicated by a flashing marker. This quest marker, along with custom waypoints, can be changed on your map screen, available through the menu. Please follow the quest objective.
Don blinked and looked around. Sure enough, there was a bouncing marker in his field of view. He gave a grunt of acknowledgement and followed it without another question. In short order, he'd traveled through the small town and was standing in front of a quaint house, the quest marker bouncing on the door. He shrugged and raised a hand to knock.
The door swung open almost too quickly, and a woman stood in the doorway beyond. She was average-looking in just about every way and above her floated a tooltip simply labeled Mom. She grinned at Don, pulling him into a quick hug.
"DonKiwi, welcome home!" She stepped back, though was clearly blocking the doorway. "Where is your sibling? We can't get started without them!"
Don's heart leaped into his throat. He stared at Mom with an incredulity that should probably have been reserved for his real mother. The tears blurring his eyes were enough to distract him from the prompt that popped up next to the woman's head.
This quest requires two participants.

While DonKiwi was greeting his mother, he would be able to hear the sound of clacking hooves. Were he to turn around, he would see a young man riding atop a Zebstrika, barreling down the residential road at what was clearly above the speed limit. Once he was a block away, the Kindler and Swimmer slowed the electric horse, carefully calculating his speed to comfortably stop near the newbie and the NPC that seemed to take on the role of every player's in-game mother.
"Hi, Mom!" Josh waved from the back of his Pokémon. What was he doing in the tutorial area? To be able to ride an evolved Pokémon, his character had to be quite advanced. "And hello to you, too!" he tilted his head toward the new player, his floating name tag on full display. It was the clack of hooves that ended up breaking Don out of his stupor. He cleared his throat and reached up to wipe his eyes as discreetly as he could manage. If he was any more experience with video games, he might have taken a moment to marvel at the way the WorldScreen handled the virtual reality of his emotions. As it was, though, he just didn't want to be caught crying.
He turned just in time to see the man—and an absolutely massive zebra—stop next to him. Don gave a nod in greeting, glancing at the name tag that floated next to him. He was pretty sure this was another person.
"Oh, there you are, JoshDevlin!" Mom said, clapping her hands together. She sighed wistfully, a single tear in her eye. "All kids leave home someday... the TV said so."
Don screwed up his face. "Weird thing for the TV to say..." He turned to Josh, putting on his best pleading smile. "Hey can I ask you something? How do you open this?" He thrust his brand new Pokeball towards Josh, the sticker reading "Snivy" still plastered across it. "I got it from that weird ghost Professor lady and I'm pretty sure my Pokemon is in it but I can't... get it...open." His explanation was punctuated by Don once again trying to wedge his fingernails into the seam of the Pokeball and pry it open.

Someone Josh's level had to look like a guy on top of the world to someone who had started a day ago tops. He wasn't that high of a level yet, but high enough to not get on the bad side of. "Hey there!" Josh waved, setting down Raiden's reins. "Is Don okay to call you?" he politely asked before addressing DonKiwi 's question.
"I actually don't need your Poké Ball to show you how to open it." Procuring Blitz's Poké Ball from his belt, he rotated it so that the grey button on its center faced the newbie. "Press and hold the button right here, and the Poké Ball will click open. Just like this!" Clicking the button on his own Poké Ball, a Shinx appeared in a flash of light, rambunctiously weaving around the Zebstrika's four legs like a runaway wind-up toy. A concerning line caused Josh to stop.
"Wait, ghost Professor lady... Dr. Bunya?!" he gasped. "Consumed by the Corruption..." Maybe it was for the better that the Silent Night quest had been terminated early...

Don cocked his head for a moment, forgetting entirely that he had a username that was different from his real name. It didn't take him long to recover, but likely long enough for Josh to notice. Don grinned. "O-oh, yeah! Don is fine."
He watched intently as Josh pulled out a Pokeball of his own and pressed the button on the front, producing a little blue cat. He knelt and watched it run between the legs of the Pokemon Josh was riding. "Woah! What is that" It looked cool and that gave him hope he could have something cool, too. Mimicking the motions, he clicked the button on his own Pokeball. In a flash of light, the Pokemon that he now knew was called Snivy appeared.
Don's shoulders slumped. It... it didn't look very cool. As a matter of fact, it looked kind of stuck-up. The Snivy didn't help that first impression, turning up his nose and regarding Don with one wary eye.
"Sorry, you're just... not what I expected." A pop up appeared in his field of view.
Would you like to give a nickname to Snivy? Y N
Hesitantly, Don put his hands under the Snivy's little arms, lifting the snake up to his face to get a better look. He frowned, suddenly serious, and looked the Pokemon in the eye. "Wilson."
"You boys know how I worry," Mom was saying, her hand gently cupping her own face. Don had almost completely forgotten she was standing there. He was too wrapped up in the Pokemon and meeting an actual person in the game and trying to commit mechanics to memory. "Especially after what happened to your father. I know you two will be careful, but never forget that Pokemon are dangerous."
Don's attention was finally pulled back to Josh, Mom still relegated to background noise. "Yeah, I think Bunya was her name. What's 'Corruption'? Is that bad?" He straightened, plopping Wilson onto his shoulder. "She was definitely weird but I don't play a lot of games so I don't know if that's just how NPCs are sometimes." After a pause, his eyes widened and he gave a sideways glance to the Snivy who was struggling to balance on his shoulder. "She's the one that gave me Wilson. He's not corrupted, too, is he?"

Josh, whether for good or not, used his real name in the game. After all, if his character was a self-insert, he had to use his real name for maximum immersion. "Great to meet you, Don! One of the people I play Magic with at the LGS is also named Don," he replied, trying to get a feel for what kind of person DonKiwi was.
"These two are my Zebstrika and Shinx," Josh introduced his Pokémon. "Their names are Raiden and Blitz." The feline sounded a cute mew at his name being mentioned. "Take it from me; one of the first things you'll want to do is get a Pokémon you can ride. The RUNNING SHOES you'll get here let you run more quickly, but they don't hold a candle to how fast a Pokémon can carry you." Of course, Don would need to catch a large enough Pokémon, and many had to be evolved, too. Quite the investment of both time and BYTES, but well worth the trouble. "Actually, if you're a Gardener, you'll be able to use your Snivy as a mount after it's fully evolved. And they're quick." That reminded Josh: he still needed to get the Beta Island pass. That would be one of his first purchases after he returned to the Facemaker's place with a wallet filled with 2,000 BYTES.
It made sense that the new player didn't know about Corruption. "It's what happens when you go into Area 2 unprotected. Stay out of Mistra, no matter how high your level gets. Unless you want to find yourself whisked back to a Shrine with 1 hit point," Josh advised, having personal experience with the Corruption Zone there. "Your Snivy doesn't show any signs of Corruption. I'd spend some time in the menu. The help section has a nice glossary; I'd recommend reading through it."

"It's not just the big ones, you know," Mom went on, seemingly unfazed by the side conversation happening right in front of her. Don felt a pang of guilt for her but, upon reminding himself she was an NPC, he put it out of his mind. "Why your father was practically an expert in wrangling the big, dangerous Pokemon. That's why it was such a shock when he stepped on that Weedle." She dabbed dramatically at the corner of her eye.
Don, meanwhile, was listening intently to the information Josh relayed. "Zebstrika, Shinx," he repeated, though how much those names actually stuck would remain to be seen. He looked to the Snivy when Wilson was mentioned, trying to imagine what he might evolve into. Maybe a big green dinosaur thing? Clearly he'd be something big enough to be rideable, and that would be cool. "Stay out of Mistra," he repeated, nodding seriously. The grin on his face was enough to betray him, though.
He was definitely going to Mistra.
"Oh right," Don said, snapping his fingers. "I forgot about the menu. Now how was I supposed to..." He could remember the initial tutorial describing a gesture that would open the menu. He spent a second flopping his hands around fruitlessly. "No, it was more like—" He finally managed to clap his palms together before opening them like a book. The menu flashed up before his eyes. There sure were a lot of articles. More words than he was willing to read right now, for sure. He closed the menu and grinned at Josh. "Hey, thanks, man! Dunno if you can tell, but I'm new to this. Looks like you know what you're doing, though!"
Mom appeared at Don's shoulder, placid smile still on her face. "When you're traveling, make sure you keep an Antidote on you. And make sure you always wear shoes!" With a cartoonish blip, a pair of shoes appeared in her outstretched hands and she offered them to Josh and DonKiwi in turn.
Running Shoes were added to your inventory!

Don's DAD seemed to have it far worse than Josh's did, despite knowing he worked himself to exhaustion for the Pokémon Racing Federation. "Pardon me for interrupting your lovely conversation, but can I ask how Dad's doing?" Josh asked his own MOM.
"Still hasn't come home to see me," she replied. "Still works long hours and is almost impossible to reach, even by phone. Makes enough money to sustain the family and lets me be a stay-at-home mother. We've got a lot of Pokémon to take care of!"
Josh rolled his eyes and turned back toward Don. "I'm serious. You could lose one of your Pokémon to the Everworld there. I almost did." Granmarg would have been a devastating loss. He rode the Mudsdale all over UNOVR, particularly in places where he couldn't handle Raiden's speed. As he got more experience, though, he would be able to ride faster and faster without being able to vomit.
Without warning, his MOM appeared behind him with RUNNING SHOES in hand. "And you forgot these, too!" she reminded him. The scout dismounted from his Pokémon, switching shoes with the RUNNING SHOES. He was going to complain about how their usefulness would be limited when he traveled in the saddle frequently. Inside Instances, though, the ability to run would be invaluable.
Information> Received "RUNNING SHOES"!
