As Shalin returned from the Surge Steppes, she checked her quest list, realizing there was an entire tutorial section she hadn't done. There were four quests in total, one of them to get the RUNNING SHOES. Saddling up a Pokémon would be the faster way to travel long-term, but faster footspeed would be an interim way to get from Point A to Point B. Opening her menu, she highlighted the quest for them and selected it. Before it would begin, she received a prompt at the top of her HUD?
Information> Selecting this Quest will transport you to a different location. Decision> Proceed? ► Yes No
Upon confirmation, she was warped to a small town, in front of her a modest residence with a sign in front of it. As she stepped forward, Flit happily buzzing behind her, she gave it a read.
Information> Shalin's house
So this was her home in the game. What would her family be like? Alicia Westfield {Party}Saria the Bulbasaur (Levels: 2/2/2) Flit the Yanma (Levels: -/-/-)

Alicia sighed softly. After a particularly stressful time facing some inner demons, which she was very much not expecting from this game, she needed to just… chill. No fighting, no training, no future planning, just… home and rest. If only her home in reality were comforting right now. But with how the Trial pulled from memory, she needed to be away from there as well for a moment. Which was how she found herself here again. Revisiting the “Mom” of every UNOVR player. It was fortunate that one could retake tutorial quests at any time and as many times as desired. While Mom was fairly generic without actually being faceless, that unconditional care was heartwarming all the same. And… heartwarming was what she needed right now. It reminded her so much of a number of main-line games, a quaint two-story construction with an olden-time feel in its wooden planks. A three bedroom home if she was remembering correctly. Since the tutorial quests could all be done with two people if she recalled, though she had done these things solo the first time around. And with exception of the Hoenn games the father of the protagonist was universally absent from the series. She almost didn’t notice there was another individual present until she heard the buzzing of insect wings. which made her refocus and realize someone else was there. A… distressingly slim young woman by the looks of things. Though with the flexibility of avatar creation she had no idea if it was actually a girl behind that avatar. ”O-Oh! Um, h-hello there. N-new to the game?” She was a bit off kilter at the moment, so she was letting more of her real, mousy and quiet self slip through. Which made her quiet down subconsciously as she spoke. She mentally winced at that, hoping she wouldn’t have to repeat herself because she wasn’t heard. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

Right, this was a MMO, not a single-player experience. There were enough players out there that perhaps Shalin could find others that shared the same passion and interests she did. As Flit and Shalin approached Alicia Westfield , she courteously apologized for what she could only presume was the Yanma startling her. "Sorry if we scared you. I am a bit new, yes. Shalin Nariya, and this is Flit," she introduced herself and her Pokémon.
The girl's eyes shifted toward the seams in the door, the windows, along the house's many vertices... any clue to see if she could get inside the house without opening the door. "This is going to sound a bit weird, but I'm actually a glitch hunter. What brought you--"
As if both of them being near the door triggered it, the front door's knob suddenly turned, their in-game MOM opening it and greeting them. "Why, hello there! Come on in!" Alicia Westfield {Party}Saria the Bulbasaur (Levels: 2/2/2) Flit the Yanma (Levels: -/-/-)

”It’s alright, I should’ve been paying more attention.” Alicia replied, smiling in a tired fashion. ”I’m Alicia Westfield, pleasure to meet you.”She smiled at the Yanma fluttering about near Shalin. Definitely not completely new at least. ”I hope you didn’t run afoul of a Duraludon out there. Made that mistake myself to help out another player that was about to get ambushed. We managed to beat it by working together, though.”She was sharp though. She caught how Shalin scanned the house for… something. But what- and then Shalin answered the question before she could even think to formulate the question vocally. She didn’t get to respond, even though she was fairly confident as to the nature of Shalin’s cut off question. Mom poked her head into the situation. Moderate-length brunette hair and a slim, unassuming figure dressed in a cute blue blouse and a knee-length navy skirt. There was no way that anyone would actually believe this woman had mothered either of the more exotic girls before her in reality. At least, not biologically. But that was the price you had to pay in order to make things work with such a robust character creator. Something had to give when it came to suspension of disbelief. ”We’ll be in in a bit, Mom. Just taking a moment to catch up.” Alicia said softly. ”Are you sure?” Mom asked in some concern. ”I’ve got cookies fresh out of the oven.”That… was actually a bit tempting. Alicia was willing to admit that she liked the sound of fresh baked cookies. ”I’m sure. Unless you want some, Shalin?”The little story was something she’d made up to get Mom to head back in so that Shalin could keep looking. Glitch Hunters were… actually kind of interesting to her. If she ever went into game design, she would want someone like Shalin on the team at some point before release. They were actually in very similar fields in that regard, manipulating coding in different ways. But with the offer on the table, she had to toss Shalin a chance to respond to it. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

"Great to meet you, Alicia!" Shalin waved, Flit returning to her side and making her flinched as he buzzed a little too close to her ear. "Nope, ran into Flit on the first try. RNG I wish I could have back when it matters." RNG manipulation was a long ways off, if not impossible, in such a game. And even if it was found, she was certain that was something even the most laissez-faire MMO dev would patch. Imagine being able to control the spawner to get the desired Pokémon one wanted, every time!
Shalin sniffed upon hearing that MOM was baking cookies. "Can't say no to one or two," she caved. "What kind did you bake?"
"Double chocolate," she replied before returning to the kitchen.
"She really knows what my favorite kind of cookie is... I wonder how," she mused, going back to looking up and down the polygons composing the house. "Hmm, let me try something. This wall looks suspicious," she said, pointing to not the wall they were standing next to, but the chimney. She undid the latch on Saria's Poké Ball and lobbed it toward the chimney. The moment it touched the space above the chimney, it bounced back toward her, immediately losing all upward momentum and coming hurtling toward her just as fast as it had risen from her pitch.
"Arceus... I can't believe that worked. How are people still coding geometry like it's the late 90s?" a puzzled-looking Shalin asked no one in particular as she caught Saria's Poké Ball.

”Maybe send some of that RNG fortune my way? I’ve had no luck trying to shake a Noibat out of the Briarbane grass. It’s the only pokemon so far I’ve been actively looking for.” Alicia joked with a smile. She hummed, nodding softly. She had no particular favorite, but double chocolate did sound tasty. But Shalin’s musings briefly brought her back to the Everworld. In that recreation of a home both current and childhood. Of her real life self constructed out of the ether to face off with her. The would-be hero took a deep breath to steady herself. ”I don’t know. And I think we don’t want to know. There’s a lot of implications between now and something I’ve experienced that I would rather not think too hard on.”She did watch with interest as Shalin tossed one of her pokeballs, probably her starter’s, up at the chimney. And then… suddenly it rocketed back towards her? Alicia quirked an eyebrow at that, confused. ”What the heck just happened there?” the pinkette asked in confusion. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

"How do you think I feel about Vulpix?" Shalin asked, relating her Desire Sensor plight. "And I want two. Would love feel what it's like to saddle a Pokémon as nimble as a Ninetales." With how fast they were, they might be enough for her to clip through thin walls.
it seemed the reason for Alicia coming back to the beginners' area was intimately personal, if not embarrassing or even soul-crushing. Rather than inquire about that, she would give the girl a history lesson on poorly-programmed video games.
"So one memory-saving trick when rendering 3D environments is to program ceiling hitboxes to extend indefinitely upward until a floor hitbox contains it. This works most of the time... until someone forgets to put a floor where a floor should be."

Alicia gasped out, her eyes wide. ”How’d I forget about Vulpix!? Oooooh, and it’s going to be such a pain to find one, isn’t it…?”Of course, when it came to the quick lesson, Alicia listened with curiosity. While she wasn’t a game designer, she did code so she was interested. But… what she was told was odd. ”… How does that save memory…? If the hitbox extends infinitely, wouldn’t that demand more to process? Especially in the event of forgetting a containing floor?”Shaking her head, she hummed to herself. ”Never mind, I’ll look it up later. Shall we head inside to have some cookies?”——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

Shalin giggled when Alicia expressed confusion. It made sense to those not familiar with early 3D games' inner workings. "Think about how polygons are rendered. Triangles are the most memory efficient ways to store polygons in memory because they only have three vertices. If a ceiling is supposed to be on the top of a room or cave and the player's not supposed to get above it, why define a maximum height for it? If you want to define a maximum height for a ceiling, put a floor on top of it." Memory was, of course, more of an issue back in those days, when an entire 3D game had to fit on... eight megabytes. Not the tens, if not hundreds, of gigabytes UNOVR may have occupied.
With how confused Alicia looked, Shalin felt the need to explain in "basic" terms. "Let's say you want to make a box. A simple box. It has six faces: four walls on the sides, a floor on top, and a ceiling on the bottom. This makes the interior of the box all ceiling, and makes it impossible for the player to get stuck inside the box because the ceiling forces them out of it through the bottom."
When Alicia shook her head, Shalin stopped. "...Yeah, there's a lot to it. Let's go inside."

The would-be hero started nodding slowly, starting to see the logic. ”My experience in this kind of things is on a more mechanical level. I work on the computers themselves directly and the coding to runs the programs. The math’s a lot different when you’re not worried about making things appear right on screen.”And then she remembered something that had occurred. ”That reminds me, actually. Not this kind of glitch exactly, but I came up to another player having experienced a glitch as well. I don’t know what exactly happened, just that he should have had Pokemon that were still standing. But something went down in the final clash with this Boss Battle in Ostellia’s dunes after I got thrown back to a Shrine that made the game simultaneously think he was victorious and defeated at the same time. Maybe both his active Pokemon and the boss reached 0 HP at the exact same time? But it didn’t send him to the Shrine, just made him move in perma-slow motion until he logged out and re-logged in. Golden Pokeball and all. It was flying through the air so slowly I could have grabbed it mid-flight.”It had stuck in the back of her mind since that day. But she never really thought about it beyond ‘that was odd’. But if anyone could recreate it and figure out what went goofy in the coding, it might be this proclaimed glitch hunter. A chance to find out how it occurred was a bit too tantalizing to pass up. Still, with the agreement to shelve the rest of this later made, Alicia went to the door and opened it up, stepping into the house fairly smoothly. And that let the scent of the double chocolate cookies hit her nose. ”Mmmmm…”MOM had gotten a pair of plates out, with a small mound of cookies on each. Because of course she would make plenty for both girls. She sat on a chair in the living room, and waved to Alicia as the pinkette came in. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

Shalin, likewise, shelved the rest of the game-specific discussion, going back to Alicia's mentioned expertise as she stacked her cookies neatly. "So you're more on the hardware side than the software side," she surmised, respecting the need for hardware troubleshooters. Her expertise was at the software level. Both required attention to detail, just in different ways.
As she listened to the recounting of the glitch, Shalin speculated what the most likely cause would be. "Sounds like they both went down on the same frame, yeah," she agreed with Alicia's assessment. "You know how there's this cutscene where everything else slows down when a boss dies? I bet it didn't take him out of that cutscene mode. I'll try to recreate it sometime."
After she set the plates of cookies down, she headed over to a nearby closet and returned with two shoeboxes, stacked on top of one another. "I know you're excited to get out there, but you shouldn't run off without your RUNNING SHOES," her needy mother reminded her.
"Fair," Shalin replied. "Might give me the speed needed to clip through a thin wall." MOM returned the remark with a dumbfounded stare.

”Yeah, my focus is on the hardware. Though if I ever get adventurous, could I call on you to help find the weaknesses and errors in my work?” Alicia asked with a grin. Maybe one day she’d make that kind of leap. Especially now that she met with a glitch hunter. Hearing some confirmation on the validity of her thought, Alicia nodded in appreciation. ”I’m familiar with it. Happened every time I took down a Colossal Battle’s boss. And I’ve taken on four of them by now. Two with support, two on my own.”Alicia then snickered a bit as poor Mom had no idea what Shalin was talking about. Of course she would have no frame of reference. But Alicia, not wanting to confuse the NPC present any further, did discreetly open a direct message box, putting Shalin’s name into the recipient box DIRECT MESSAGE> Might want to be a bit more mindful of when you talk about messing with game coding around NPCs. ‘Mom’’s looking like you grew a second head. With how alive this world is… I wouldn’t be surprised if a well-placed, or misplaced, phrase could cause big ripples down the line.”Don’t worry too much. She’s always got these odd thoughts, remember?” Alicia replied to their Mom. ”We still love her though, ya?””Of course!” Mom answered back. ”Come now, Alice!””…” Alicia leaned forward, resting her head on one hand. With the other, she took her shoebox. While she strictly didn’t need it, it didn’t hurt to claim it again. She whispered under her breath, loud enough for Shalin to hear but not Mom. ”It’s Alicia, not Alice…”It didn’t happen often anymore, but that mistake from the very beginning still cropped up every now and then. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya

"For the market price, of course," Shalin smiled back. Though she was a glitch hunter by night, she did have a day job. They might have to have that discussion outside the game; she suspected that solicitation was against the UNOVR terms of service. She let the scene before her play out for a while, receiving an unexpected DM from Alicia. She would leave a positive reaction on the message but not reply to it directly.
"And this is why I picked a name that stood out," Shalin chuckled as she popped her shoes off, putting on the RUNNING SHOES. "What do you think, Alicia? Wanna head outside and give them a try?" she asked with that look on her face. That look of someone seeking trouble.

”Of course,” Alicia agreed with a hum, making a show of equipping the Running Shoes as well. She technically didn’t need to. But oh well. ”Do I have a small story for you…” Alicia muttered when Shalin commented about names. Fortunately Mom was making way, giving them room to go when it was time. ”Whatever the issue was, it was in the code itself. I typed in ‘Alicia’ but I spawned in initially with ‘Alice’ as my name. The doctor was getting it wrong from the word go, but she was at least somewhat receptive when I brought it up.”Of course… she was really concerned about the fact that Shalin had that worrying look. ”I feel obligated to follow you for awhile, lest you clip so far out of bounds you find your way to the Everworld…” she noted with a small sigh. Why did she feel like Shalin was going to make her go gray? Both in reality and in UNOVR. ——————————————————————— Shalin Nariya , pack it up, we done here.
