It hadn't taken much for Don to get hooked on the battling-and-catching aspects of the game. Two fights and one new team member late, he was already back out in the Tall Grass, squinting through the waving grasses to see if he could catch sight of another Pokemon. Nike was still in her Pokeball and Wilson had taken his now-usual spot on Don's shoulder. Don figured they would need to learn to work as a team, but he felt like he and Wilson were on such a roll that he couldn't risk messing it up. He was excited about his new teammate, though. What was it called, a Murkrow? Whatever she was, she had a cool little hat.

Wading into the grass, Don was suddenly thankful that it was virtual grass. He was pretty sure he didn't have any actual allergies, but the taller and thicker the grass, the more likely it would make any exposed skin itchy. Skin would do that when you hit it with about a billion tiny paper cuts. He didn't have to worry too much about that if they were just pixels. At least he hoped not. Squinting, he reached out a hand and brushed it against the waving blades. It certainly felt like real grass. Smelled like it, too. Hopefully the developers weren't interested in making it that realistic.

The sound of flapping caught his attention, drawing him away from his up-close inspection of the virtual vegetation programmed into the game. A blueish shape fluttered down from a nearby tree, followed by a high-pitched clicking. It was almost the same color as the fluffy round bat they'd fought before, but decidedly different. Don answered the creature back with his own high-pitched eek, eek, eek before realizing it was probably echolocating. You know, like bats do.
At the very least, that was enough to get its attention. "Sorry! Do you have to be blind to echolocate?" The bat flapped his way, seemingly now very pissed off. Wilson sighed, leaping down into the tall grass to prepare his strategy. He disappeared into the grass, only visible to Don because of the floating health bar (nice and green!). "Ready, Wilson? Vine Whip!'

The vines zipped out of Wilson's hiding spot in the grass, but the bat was too quick. It dodged to the side, vines whipping by it and striking nothing but air. It dove down into the grass, latching onto Wilson with sharp little teeth. Don cursed. It'd dodged Wilson's attack so easily! He could hear the high-pitched chittering again. Wait. That was it.
"The echolocation! Wilson, this one will have to be up close and personal! Tackle it!" Hiding in the grass wouldn't save him if the bat wasn't using actual eyes to see. Just a couple battles in and they were already having to swap strategies. Even if he'd never admit it, Don could understand how people got super into this.

And just like that, they were back in it. From his vantage point, it was harder for Don to see the actual fray, but the chunk taken out of the enemy's health bar was clear as day. "Just like that!" he whooped. Now that he thought about it, there wasn't really any danger in him getting closer, was there? He was pretty sure at this point that the Pokemon were programmed not to hurt the players. He inched closer just in time to see an equally-sized chunk of HP taken out of Wilson's health. Don hissed through his teeth.
"That's okay, we're still doing good." And now the bat was close enough that its echolocation wasn't doing much to give it an advantage. "Hit it with another Tackle!"

Don folded his hands together and out, opening the guidebook. He needed ideas for a better strategy, something that would help them get a leg up on this stupid bat. He found Snivy's Pokedex entry and took a look at the Pokemon's available moves. He didn't have time to read what they actually did mechanically, so he picked the one that sounded the most useful in the moment.
"Wilson, Wrap!" He figured that might actually wrap some vines around the Zubat. If he could stop it from moving so much, it would certainly make it easier to beat the damn thing. And maybe make it harder for it to actually land any more hits on Wilson.

Don hissed as the health bars for both Pokemon shrunk down to nearly nothing. The pair were too evenly matched. The next move would have to be a Hail Mary. Even from his vantage point, Don knew he wasn't close enough to snatch up Wilson before another blow would land. His only hope was that Wilson could muster up the energy to speed his way to victory. It was unfortunate for him that he had no idea of the mechanics or the typical base Speed of a Zubat.
Live and learn, right?
"Tackle!"

Don yelped an indistinguishable curse as the situation unfolded in slow motion. Wilson pulled himself up, squared up to the Zubat, launched himself forward with the last of his strength, and completely missed. The vines that had been holding the Zubat down had already fallen away, leaving it able to move more or less freely. As Wilson fell to its side, it simply turned and chomped down on his exposed back.
Pokeballs forgotten, Don moved in to bodily scoop up Wilson once again. One of these times, he would remember that he could use a Pokeball to carry his Pokemon and the convenience of it wouldn't be soon lost on him. He bolted from the scene, headed once more for the shrine.

It wasn't long before DonKiwi was back, eyes on the prize, Wilson tucked safely into his Pokeball. The Snivy deserved a break, after all, and it was time to get used to fighting with a different Pokemon. Nike sat on his shoulder—the one opposite from where Wilson typically was—calmly watching the scenery pass by as they made their way back to the Zubat.
The bat was within sight quickly, fluttering just above the grass where they'd left it. Don paused a few feet away, hoping he was far enough not to attract its attention, and pulled up the guidebook. He found Murkrow's Pokedex page and checked the moves that Nike should know. He was starting to get the hang of finding what he needed, at least in the Pokedex; he'd barely touched the other guidebook pages, if he was honest.
"Ready? Give em a Peck!"

Nike lifted lazily off Don's shoulder, soaring over with barely a flap of her wings. She neared the Zubat and struck out with her beak, landing a glancing blow as she flapped by. Whether by luck or strategy, she flew buy quickly enough that the surprised Zubat missed when it tried to retaliate.
"One more time! Give it another Peck!" It was a small amount of damage, but it was something. If Nike kept this up, they could knock that bat out cold in no time. It was good training for the both of them, Don figured. He needed to be more familiar with the moves his Pokemon knew without looking at the guidebook every time. And his Pokemon needed to... well he wasn't actually sure. But doing these battles had to be doing something for them, too, right?

Nike angled her wings and swung herself in a loose loop, sending herself soaring back towards the Zubat. Sure enough, one more hit was all it took to finish the bat off and it fluttered to the ground with a small squeak. Nike returned silently to Don's shoulder with very little in the way of reaction. He was a little disappointed.
"Well I'm proud of you," he said, turning to march further into the grass. "Wilson might have whittled it down a bit for you, but that was your first fight with me. And you finished it off pretty clean." Nike squawked, but Don couldn't tell if she was arguing or agreeing.

After the back-to-back fights they'd been getting into thus far, Don was surprised when things became as quiet as they were. There were other players wandering around, each keeping to their own, catching and fighting Pokemon in turn. Maybe it was too busy around here and the spawns couldn't keep up. That sounded videogame-y enough that it made sense to Don, at least.
He stopped for a minute, looking out across the field of gently waving grass. There were bird Pokemon flying in the distance, but they were too far away for him to see if they were catchable or not. There were closer Pokemon, too, ones he didn't recognize. None had the telltale symbol next to them that showed he could battle and catch them. But they were interesting enough to watch for a moment.

There was another flapping of wings—Don was starting to think that every Pokemon on this route was some kind of bird or bat, and he was about to be proven even more correct in that assumption. A few feet away from the pair, another different bat flapped its wings to land in a tree. Don's eyes widened. That thing looked pretty neat. Or, at the very least, it looked like it really had the potential to be extremely cool when it evolved. Not that he really had anything to base that on other than pure vibes.
But vibes was all it would take. Don bent his forearm out in front of him, holding Nike out the way he'd seen falconers do on those National Geographic documentaries. "Time to fly, Nike. Peck!"

With a single, punctuated squawk, Nike leapt from Don's arm and flapped towards her opponent. The bat spotted her, but it was too late. Not that Don figured the wild Pokemon were especially keen on running away. They hadn't been so far, instead attacking as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Nike rammed into the bat just as it flung itself from the tree. Don whooped as the Noibat's health bar dipped to half-health instantly.
It collided with Nike, doing a sizeable amount of damage to her in return before the two broke apart and soared in circles. Just as they were coming about to face one another again, Don called out "Try a new one: Astonish!"

Nike and the Noibat flapped towards each other, each gaining speed as they neared a head-to-head clash. At the last second, Nike spread her wings and pulled up short, sending out a wave of dark energy that rolled over her opponent. The Noibat faltered, its wing clipping Nike's body as it spun past her.
"Very nice!" Don called, moving to follow the action as the two flying Pokemon circled each other again. "Peck again!" He pulled up the guidebook, flipping through to Murkrow's entry once more while he had a spare moment in the breath between attacks.
