Discovery> New area discovered! Citadel of Lost Dreams || Recommended LV: 10
The thick fog surrounding the deep woods of the Misty Timberland forced Josh to pump his Dewgong's brakes. As a Swimmer, he could now ride his water Pokémon on land, swimming through the bottom ten feet of air as though it were water. It was a strange sensation to get used to, and would undoubtedly take some time. The third dimension was especially challenging, having to balance pressure on the reins and leg pressure to manage speed and altitude simultaneously. Was this what riding a flying Pokémon would be like?
Ixion served as the duo's light source, Ulysses making sure to keep well clear of it as to not accidentally douse the speedy horse. He turned around to make sure Alkaid was still behind him. "How you holding up? We're just about at the entrance, where the good spawns are. Experience should be pretty good inside, and I just need to gain one more level before I get access to my first flying mount."

There was no way he was going to risk riding his Celesteela out here again, especially not after the fiasco that was the race that had happened. The whistling noise had really gotten to him; and so he would make a mental note not to take them out of Ostellia—for the time being.
“Let me guess—you found me because there was nobody else, or I was the closest one nearby?” he drawled; thankfully able to keep up with the other (who for some reason had insisted riding a Dewgong on land, in mid-air of all things).
(Of course, little did he know he was going to get into a lot more adventures’ worth of trouble with this particular kid in the future!)
“I’ll know what Pokémon I want when I see ‘em,” he would quietly remark. Would it be a good idea to tell him that he’d already played this game before; albeit on a different server?

Josh was a swimmer; of course he would ride his water Pokémon on land! It was one of the perks of being a Swimmer, and a class he would never unequip once he got the 2,000 BYTES to change his avatar at the Identity Parlor. "I just wanted to spend some time with you and get to know you better! We did become friends recently, after all, Alkaid!" The young adult seemed a little too cheerful. "That and I was also looking for a partner to level grind with. I've got my first flying Pokémon I want to ride on, and I'm just a few experience points away from gaining the last level I need to strap the saddle to her." Given how apprehensive Alkaid seemed to be to loud noise, the scout would refrain from sending his Yanmega out just yet.
Josh didn't quite hear Alkaid's last statement, the wind picking up as the duo approached the castle's front door. "What did you say? I missed it," he asked, Ulysses floating toward the entrance and turning to one side to allow his rider to open the door.

“I asked, in case you missed it—are we going to meet any Pokémon in here?” he would clarify—he wondered if the other had gotten tired hearing the constant whistling noise coming from his Celesteela because of the way that his own invasive Pokémon had acted during the race.
(It had almost driven him to madness, if we’re being honest here.)
“If you’re here for the levels, I… am actually here for similar reasons, too. More like monetary reasons, since I want to fully unlock my Tank skill tree first and foremost in case there’s a big server-wide event coming up soon.”
He wondered how the other would take the information that he’d already played this game (albeit on a different server) and was playing it again out of sheer spite for majority of the European player database making a hive-minded mistake that led to his home server’s downfall…

The Celesteela wasn't the issue; it was a gust of wind making it hard for him to hear. "There should be Pokémon inside, but none we can catch. I checked and our Golden Poké Balls are turned off. It's just for experience." The more levels he could gain, the sooner his Pokémon would evolve. And the sooner they evolved, the sooner he could rein them up and zip across the game.
Dragon Pokémon took a long time to evolve, after all.
"Money's part of it for me, too. Have you heard of this place called the Identity Parlor?" Josh asked as he creaked open the front door and gestured for Alkaid to enter. "It's in the back alleys of Briarbane."

“Oh, we can’t catch anything? Sucks. But the experience should definitely help out with getting our Pokémon companions stronger,” he nodded as he watched the other open the door so they could go inside.
(Of course, the only ‘fully evolved’ companion he had here was the Celesteela, but that was neither here nor there.)
Once he was inside, he would then summon his Murkrow, Muninn, who would fly around them for a few moments before settling to follow him from behind, acting as an extra pair of eyes in case they were jumped.
“What about that place?”
For the life of him, he couldn’t recall anything like that existing back in the EU servers back home. It had been so long since he returned back there to check in on the ‘madness’ that had consumed most of the place.
“Is there something special about it?”

It was a good thing Alkaid had brought forth such an observant Pokémon, for there were Raticate ambushing the duo already. Hurling Luna's Poké Ball to the ground, the saddled Liepard sprung out of it, pouncing one of the normal-types with an impossibly fast SUCKER PUNCH. A retaliatory SUPER FANG earned a squeal from the purple cat, her health reduced to half with equal speed.
Provided he could get help from Alkaid to clean up the sudden encounter in the entrance hall, Josh would rein his Dewgong toward the saddled Liepard, making sure the big cat was okay after that nasty attack. "Guess we have to keep on our toes here," Josh sighed; the wounds weren't too bad, but he had to be careful, as they did raise the chance of a critical hit being dealt to Luna, which would almost certainly retire her even if he did pop his Dewgong's use of Life Dew.
"Anyway, the Identity Parlor. It's this place in Briarbane where they can supposedly change your identity. As in change your avatar." If Alkaid was an astute observer, he might notice that the saddle on the Liepard was a bit small for an adult to sit in...

The corvid Pokémon would let out a warning caw that there was something coming—and much tempted as he was to use Astonish, that was a Normal-type Raticate and he wasn’t going to fuck this up in front of his idiot human!
So instead, he would copy what the Liepard had done and flew down low, cawing derisively all the while Taunting the other Raticate to follow him; before cuffing the Rat Pokémon upside the head with a surprise Sucker Punch!
Thankfully the Hyper Fang from the Raticate attacking the Murkrow ended up biting into thin air before a Gust of wind blew the other Pokémon away.
“But doesn’t the character select screen allow for any cosmetic additions to your… you know, in-game self?” he continued; blinking at the sight of the… huh.
What was up with the Liepard’s saddle?

Josh breathed a sigh of relief as Alkaid cleaned up the encounter, Josh hearing a ding near him as level-up messages flooded his HUD. "Oh, hey, I hit level 11!" the scout smiled. "If only I brought my Yanmega with me. I could learn to fly on her! Sure would have been useful for getting to the upper floors of this place."
Not as useful as he thought; he would quickly discover, once he was flying, that the game would snap him to 10 feet above the surface if he flew over a gap. There would be no crossing big canyons by flying over them... and if a certain glitch hunter's discoveries were right, flying carried its own hidden dangers. In maps with bottomless pits, flying over one, or even over a floor gap, could result in being snapped down to the death barrier, causing Pokémon and rider to instantly black out. At least in theory.
"Not after character creation. The Identity Parlor can let you do a total visual respec... including what I want to do. I want to de-age myself." He gestured toward Luna. "See how her saddle's a bit small for me?"

Okay, wait—hold up.
“How in the name of everything unholy can a Yanmega carry someone your size?” he would blink. Sure, he was reminded of a certain something happening—a story for another day—about how someone roughly his size was carried by a Yanmega’s legs before flying into mid-air.
“Aren’t Yanmega like, really thin? Won’t they snap in half if they tried to carry you?”
But no, the confusion wouldn’t end there!
“Funny. Because I can go back and add on more cosmetics—like this,” and he would then temporarily drop the clothing he was wearing to show the other that there were a multitude of tattoos across his back, most of his arms, and even across his shoulders and chest.
“Strange how you can’t, but I can. I spent ages trying to get all of these right.”
(Because in Italy, if you were a marked man, there was a very high chance you would be correlated to the mafia. And that wasn’t safe, so.)
“I might add some more later. Maybe you must’ve skipped one of the other options on the character creation screen to change additional aesthetic looks after completing character creation, or something.”

Josh's smile grew as Alkaid's inquires continued. "That's the thing. That's why I'm going to the Identity Parlor to de-age myself. I'm going to re-spec my cosmetics from scratch. I want to make myself as small of a kid as the game will let me." If the redhead was as smart as Josh thought, he would be able to put two and two together. If Josh was a child, he would be able to fit in Luna's saddle with little trouble.
"I knew you could change little details like that just from the menu," he expressed his knowledge as his friend changed his tattoo patterns. "But when they're done with me, I'll look quite different. And that sort of transformation mandates not a fee, but a symbol of status. Before they'll let me go through with it, they want to see a wallet with over 2,000 BYTES in it."
It was quite the tidy sum of money; it was enough to max two classes or skill trees! He was going to go on a shopping spree after the transformation, but boy did it sting having to hoard for so long.

The moment the other revealed what exactly he was going to do, he had to resist the urge to either roll his eyes, or pinch the bridge of his nose.
“You do realize, that if you age yourself down into a small child, you might get locked out of certain areas too, right?”
He’d heard word on the wind about a blonde who loved frequenting a certain saloon to play cards, and boy that would get awkward when a kid walked in and challenged every single patron in that particular saloon to a card game and not be taken seriously.
He then remembered something else.
Hoisting the top of his clothes back on (so that most of the tattoos were hidden from sight except for a pair of wings that were angling upwards on his neck) he then asked the other his next question.
“Why didn’t you choose the ‘Teen’ age slider when you first made your in-game avatar, then?”

Josh laughed, having a good idea where Alkaid was going with his remark. "You mean like nightclubs? I'm single and not looking; not tempted by any sex toys in places like that," he delivered his snide remark. "We'll just have to see. And if it's a place I've already been, they have my name, and my digital ID should still check out. It's how places like the Identity Parlor can even exist. You might change yourself into a child, but your ID number remains the same."
Alkaid was right; playing cards at the Firewater Saloon would be a little more challenging, and he would no longer be able to sit at the bar. Even so, it was worth it to be able to saddle Pokémon without spending Arena Points on Huge Seals for all his Pokémon. He had legendary Pokémon to hatch, after all!
"Because a teen would be too big to ride a Pokémon like Luna. I'm not making myself a kindergartener or anything, but I'm making myself as short as the Parlor will let me. Anyway, ready to move deeper in?"
Plus, there would be something utterly charming about a child with the Player class...

He would then give the other player an affectionate sort of eye roll.
“Idiota, I meant that remark for your card-playing pasttime. Plus they might not serve you beer or any adult drinks at the bar after you change your avatar,” he drawled, resisting the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose.
Back on his original server, most of everyone who played unsurprisingly chose the ‘Adult’ age for their characters—there were a few running around as ‘Teen’agers, and there was even a niche part of—he couldn’t remember if it was the British or the Spanish side of the EU server—who chose to play as stodgy old ‘Senior’ codgers.
Not a single person apparently wanted to be stuck as a ‘Child’ because of… settings, he presumed.
“Lead the way.”
His Murkrow would circle around them; before giving him the signal that everything was clear—for now.

Josh raised his hands sharply, accidentally causing Ulysses to rear and send him tumbling off his floating, aquatic steed. "Whoa there!" he exclaimed, slowly rising to his feet and taking a seat back on the water-type's back again. "Sorry, wasn't expecting that kind of response. I'm sorry if I over-reacted. Anyway, if they'll let a ten-year-old in Goldenrod's Game Corner, they'll let a kid inside Firewater to gamble with play money. Long as you can't buy in-game currency with real money, it's perfectly legal, too." He might get scowled at by a few NPCs for playing poker underage, but if it was legal, he didn't care. "I also don't drink. Ever heard the saying that alcohol and 200 miles an hour don't mix?" And no, he wouldn't bother converting that from Imperial. Alkaid could do the math.
Being asked to lead the way, Josh rounded a long hallway surrounding what appeared to be a courtyard. "I can't imagine how beautiful this place once looked," he remarked, the long corridors devoid of enemies. "Might have to find a way downstairs."
