“Cazzo, imperial measurements—why your country doesn’t want to use metric I’ll never understand,” he would crack. Because unlike three nations on this waking earth, the entire world used metric—and Italy was one of those that adapted early to the standardized measuring system, of course!
Eventually, they would reach a courtyard that looked seemingly deserted.
“…careful,” he would warn, a slight twitch in his eye tipping him off that there was something wrong.
“Places that are deceptively empty like this usually mean that there’s something else lying in wait. Trust me, kid, I’ve seen traps like these before.”
If the other was quick to notice, he would seemingly reach behind him for the ghost of a weapon resting on his back, before shifting his balance from one foot to another—an action he would unknowingly do whenever he was antsy, or at the very least preparing himself for a surprise trap that would spring itself on them at any moment!

Metric was a much more sensible system. The reason the States hadn't converted over was it was expensive in the short term. It would save money in the long term, but businesses had to please shareholders to remain competitive. And the only thing that pleased shareholders, as well as greedy execs, was how much money they could make in the short term.
For any exec worth their salt would resign if they felt a downturn coming.
Josh halted at Alkaid 's directive. "Yep, wide open spaces mean a mini-boss." He did catch the Kindler reaching for a weapon of some kind. "You must have had the Player class on your old server. I'm still working toward mine, though it will be coming soon. Once I put in for Bolter, I'll have it. There's nothing better than charging on a Pokémon's back than wielding a sword while doing it." A true paladin, he was: selfless, virtuous, and religious. They were the definitive mounted class in many tabletop systems, and he wanted to be one here.
As Josh rode toward the courtyard, red zone lines stopped him from proceeding, flashing an error message on his HUD and prompting a buzzer sound effect to play:
Error> You must dismount your Pokémon in order to proceed.
"Oh, Arceus, not this again..." he swore, giving his Dewgong a gentle pet to try to curb his frustration.

“And it was my mistake to not equip it before heading out here, I forgot,” he grumbled with a sigh as he then peered over at the notification the other saw on his interface and couldn’t help but snicker.
“Yeah… the place can get pretty anal with some of the stuff like that,” he continued before deciding which of his Pokémon he would have out.
“How many Pokémon are you calling to the field? I have two. Technically, three. But the third one is. Well, you know. uncontrollable unless we’re in Ostellia so. That’s going to be Murkrow or Grookey.”

As funny as it may have been to Alkaid , it was not funny to Josh. The scout loved the mobility of a swift steed, and the game denying him the chance to do so felt like it was rigged specifically against him. What he didn't stop to consider was the basement was likely a dungeon with narrow corridors where a saddled Pokémon might not be able to maneuver easily. The ceilings also may have been too low.
When asked how many Pokémon he would field at a time, Josh thought about it before sliding off Ulysses and withdrawing him. "Two max. I get the feeling it's going to get a bit crowded down there," he replied, pointing to the red zone line that had now turned blue. "I... want to give my Yamper some time in the spotlight. There aren't many electric Pokémon big enough to ride, and once I'm out of the Identity Parlor, Boltund should be one of them." Boltund were actually perfect for a child to mount; they were the perfect size for someone of the stature he was planning on becoming, and the electric hound was fast. Fast yet easy to control.
"I've got a full belt with me," he added, "and I left my own Invasive Species in the box. I've learned my lesson about bringing them outside Ostellia." He would proceed to show the scrape from a Naganadel stinger moving across his skin.

Maybe it was a good thing he hadn’t evolved any of his companions just yet.
Well, with that one glaring exception.
“Okay, so here’s the thing. I have six, but only one is usable in case we go up against a big boss. Then again, I know what happened during the race, so… I’m not going to use that one unless the circumstances are fucking dire.”
At least he knew he could rely on Muninn (despite the Murkrow not being his starter), all things considered.
“Well, what are we waiting for, then?” he went on; healthy sense of danger overriding precautions. “Let’s get to it!”
Hopefully by the end of this entire shebang, at least one of his other companions would evolve to help with the situation…

Given where they were, Josh understood fully. That Celesteela's screeching disincentivized him from using his own. The steel-type's size made it difficult, as did the horrible whistling noise he was sure his would make, too. As fast as riding a living rocket would be, it was not worth the ear torture. That was assuming he could even get on the thing in the first place. He was still lacking in levels to saddle any of the Ultra Beasts. Given the events of the race, it seemed decidedly not worth his while until their code was cracked. The code letting them communicate directly.
Down to the basement they went... until Josh inadvertently walked upstairs. Shaking his head, he trudged back down, only to notice a pair of icons next to him and all his Pokémon: a purple "eye" symbol and a pair of curved arrows spinning counterclockwise. Hovering over them in his interface, he viewed the tooltips and broadcast them to Alkaid :
The young man huffed, instinctively turning away from Alkaid before facing him. "Interface Screw, too? I thought this was supposed to be a dungeon bridging the game between low and mid levels!" he whined, keeping his eye out for psychic Pokémon in the twisted space.

It wouldn’t take long for the two to venture deeper into the… area, all things considered. He could swear the other had gone down, but instead of going down—he’d gone… upward?
He had a moment’s warning before the Murkrow began squawking his way; and for some strange reason…
“Muninn? The hell did you say?” he would turn to ask his corvid companion; only for… only for the words to come out in reverse.
Oh, this was going to make his head hurt in more ways than one!
It wouldn’t take too long for him to see his own user interface flashing—while he was much tempted to switch everything to Italian to make it easier for him, he figured—why not fuck around and swap it to French instead just for the fuck of it?
After all, he was proficient in three languages, so…
His eyebrows would arch upward, before he hissed a very sharp “Merde,” and then smacking a palm to his face. He had to remember he wasn’t travelling with Polaris, though, so he had to lay off on the French.
“Are you kidding me?” he would grumble.
“Guess what happened. My Murkrow’s literally speaking backwards because of this shit. Okay, so… if the directions are flipped… we’ll have to do the exact opposite of what we normally have to do without this stupid status all over us.”

If there was one relief, gravity still functioned normally. Overcoming his instincts was so hard, Josh tilting his head away from Alkaid when he meant to face him. He even tried to climb down a ladder, only to climb back up it as soon as he was on its rungs. "Arceus almighty! It's like I have to think hard to do something as simple as move! It might take me a minute just to get to the lower level!"
It seemed Josh's frustrations were just as big as his friend's, still struggling to get down the ladder. Rather than try to climb down it, he simply let go as soon as he was on it, hissing as he hit the mortars below with a loud thud. "Owww..." he groaned, suffering a small amount of fall damage.
He could hear Pokémon cries from the other side of a metal door. It seemed like they weren't alone in the citadel's basement...

“Once you get used to thinking in the opposite direction, it’s easy,” he would reassure the other; following his lead—however he would stick the landing by thinking of a reverse somersault and feeling his body executing the exact thing he needed.
“Although… if this keeps up for too long the backlash when the effect lifts is going to hit us hard once we’re done,” he mused as he turned away from the other—which in fact, was him just turning to face the door where he could hear Pokémon noises from the opposite side.
“Hopefully that room’s not a trap,” he would tilt his head away from the door—but the other would get the gist.
“Want to crack it open and see if there’s treasure in there?”

Standing up, Josh stumbled around, still disoriented from left being right and forward being back. "No kidding; that's going to be the real trouble. I'm used to reverse controls in two dimensions, but not in three. There was this one level in Donkey Kong Country 3 where as long as you were underwater, your left and right were reversed. It's so different here, though..."
It took Josh a lap or two around the small room to get used to his directions being backwards, but he managed. "I'll take a look!" Twisting the doorknob clockwise (and not counterclockwise like he was used to), he cracked the door open, seeing several Solosis and Duosion bouncing along a hallway that seemed to lead to the castle dungeon. They didn't seem to notice Josh, either. "Some small, absentminded psychic types. I doubt that was what was making those cries. Let's proceed with caution."

It was hard consciously thinking of moving in reverse—this entire place they were exploring had reversed controls so doing literally everything in the opposite direction was hard enough as it is; the kid had a point after all.
“Yeah, which is why once we’re out of here we’ll need to take a break for a bit, because the disorientation is going to hit us both hard.”
As the other took a peek in the room—there were several floating Pokémon that didn’t seem to pose too much of a threat.
“What if there’s another part of the room where the real threat is waiting?”
Now, navigating with flipped controls was something he was getting used to; however the notion of fighting with flipped controls was another thing altogether!

Before Josh could get too much farther around the next corner, a green, gelatinous surface covered both of the doors in the large, L-shaped room. There was treasure the two could get to, but not until defeating a Reuniclus and its cronies that had suddenly awoken!
"I guess we'll find out!" Josh replied, his Liepard lunging away from the "boss" Pokémon and socking some iron bars with her nasty SUCKER PUNCH instead. It seemed the Pokémon had just as difficult of a time adapting to reverse controls, as well...

He was getting used to thinking of moving in the opposite direction than he meant, and saw that the Liepard had taken aim at… and hit something that was not supposed to be there!
“Have them go in the opposite direction than where you would normally send them!” he would warn his companion; seeing as Muninn the Murkrow was already speaking backwards—hopefully it would be easy to get them to attack in the opposite direction!
(At least, what his companion confirmed, that inputting attack commands wasn’t reverse. Only movement was.)
So he had to consciously think that right was left, down was up, you got the gist.
“Muninn, use your Sucker Punch on the Duosion on your left!” he would call out; seeing that there was one such Duosion—however it was on the right of the corvid Pokémon, not the left.
Since the principle of flipped controls also applied to Pokémon, hopefully he’d be able to score a direct hit!
The good thing about this encounter was that they were both using Dark-types, so anything that the Psychic-types threw at them wouldn’t affect the Liepard and the Murkrow at all.
A loud, shrill, keening noise erupted from the Duosion as the Murkrow’s attack landed a solid hit.
“Yeah! That’s how the directions work! Same as us!” he would confirm in Josh’s direction.

"Got it!" Josh cried back, recovering from the rough impact. Commanding the Pokémon in the opposite of the desired direction worked; the second attempt at a lightning-fast SUCKER PUNCH landed, his vision flashing white briefly from the CRITICAL HIT. "Hey, that's a sign we're getting stronger; that's a new personal best for most damage dealt in one attack!" He wouldn't be reaching the third and final font size for damage any time soon. Not even with a Z-Move.
Even so, the attack did not drop the boss Pokémon; it would take both their efforts to bring down such a behemoth. Bouncing and floating away from the Liepard, the psychic-type loosed a PSYBEAM upon her, leaving her delirious from the flashing lights. "Right, it's a Miracle Eye room, too. Don't forget your Pokémon are vulnerable to psychic attacks!"

Lucky thing here was that the kid was quick to pick up on his instructions—and for a few moments even he witnessed a flash bang of a critical hit come from the Liepard!
“Muninn! Stop daydreaming and go after that blob! On your right!” he would holler; what he really meant was to strike the Reuniclus that appeared on their left side.
Never mind what word vomit his Murkrow yelled at him (the speech from the corvid’s mouth was in reverse after all); a Sucker Punch would come flying towards the Psychic-type on the left!
“Come on! Let’s go finish them off while we have the advantage!” he would yell in the opposite direction—which produced the effect of him turning to face Josh and pointing towards the boss Pokémon that looked to be rearing up for a powerful burst of Psychic energy!
