Having been declined for Awesome Games Done Quick 2025 for the eighth year in a row, and there being no CommandFests anywhere drivable, Josh needed to go somewhere. As generous as his PTO package was, particularly after being promoted two months ago, he needed to do something that wasn't a staycation. With a suitcase full of clothes and a backpack full of decks, he caught a flight to CommandFest New York, a Magic convention dedicated to the only format he played:
Commander.
With the event space fairly open due to it being trough hours (many people were still in bed), it would be a bit easier to find an open table. The black-haired young man, almost the spitting image of how his character looked in UNOVR other than the hair color, sat down and began shuffling a deck other than his commander, encased in a well-worn purple sleeve. The art depicted a knight in the saddle of a giant, armored and hooved lion, wielding a greatsword in one hand like it was nothing.
If an observer was to see what Josh was up to, they would see him drawing sample hands and goldfishing the deck. And from the cards in the hand, it would be easy to see the deck had no budget at all, containing the best lands in the game. Even a Tropical Island was on the table.

#s://a~l3n~co/i/e2RuCq~png It was absolute luck that today was his day off from work, and today also happened to be when one of the few other concessions he allowed himself was being held:
CommandFest.
Good thing he lived in New York city, so he didn’t have to travel too far! Although, he had to find parking for his bike (as he literally commuted there with his phone, wallet, and a backpack full of a mishmash of boxes of cards) and make the rest of the walk on foot.
Consider it doubly lucky that there weren’t that many people out here yet, all things considered! He knew some of his MtG friends were coming later in the day, so he’d made plans—who could he play against today?
(Never mind if all of his current cards were even barely legal, he’d been playing since the OG Kamigawa came out!)
After clearing security, he would let out a low whistle—boy the place was packed, considering that it was still early in the morning; mostly because all the local NY players were still asleep.
As the saying went, ‘early bird gets the worm’ or something, right?
He would walk by, shuffling around his backpack and shoving his ponytail out of the way—never mind if some people were giving him second looks because of his purple hair, but hey.
(The bonus was he looked absolutely nothing like his in-game avatar so he was, for most intents and purposes, mostly anonymous.)
Once he’d found a table that had an occupant but nobody else seated across, he would walk over—never mind if he thought he was having déjà vu when he saw the black-haired young man, “Hey—that spot taken?” before gesturing to the position opposite the other.
Oh, wow. This guy was fucking loaded.
He idly wondered if the other had a Birds of Paradise.

Josh scooped up his cards and perked up at Evert's question. "Of course! Glad you could find a place to play," he replied as he shuffled the large, 99-card deck. "I've got a few decks but I like to use this one to test the waters. It'll be better once we have a third and a fourth, but I'm sure we won't have trouble finding them, especially once people wake up. If this deck is too strong, I can switch to something a bit weaker for the next game." Josh's primary goal was not to win, but to ensure everyone in the group had a good game. As long as everyone's deck got to do what it was designed to do, everyone was a winner in his eyes.
The black-haired man introduced himself in the same voice that he did in the game of UNOVR. "Name's Josh. I've been playing Magic since I was six." Little did he know the two had been playing the game for around the same amount of time. After putting his deck down on his custom-art playmat featuring the strange combination of Dixie Kong, Kiddy Kong, and Raikou, he drew his opening hand of seven and smugly announced, "Keep."
With that, the game was underway. "Seachrome Coast, Steelshaper's Gift for Sword of Fire and Ice, pass." He thumbed all the way through his deck, got to the end of it, and looked confused. "Where's my Sword of Fire and Ice?" Going back through it, he located it and gently flicked it onto the table. His cards looked quite different than old ones, all three of them having art that extended all the way to the border. The sword card was even holographic. "This is a two player game, so I don't draw for my first turn. Feels weird."
Was that an otter holding that sword?

#s://a~l3n~co/i/e2RuCq~png Oh, shit—it was a Commander format—did he actually bring that deck along with him?
“Sec, lemme check if I brought it along with me,” he would mutter as he started pawing through his backpack. No, wait, that wasn’t the one he needed—no, hold up, was that—
A few minutes of shuffling later he would pull out a well-worn deck box and cracked it open; had to make sure it was the 99-carder and not the standard one he’d pulled out by mistake!
“Okay, yeah, I got my shit, let’s go,” he hummed—although for a few seconds, the voice of his opponent was seriously throwing him off! What the hell!
He could fucking swear he’d heard this voice’s owner somewhere before…
“Honestly, if I didn’t bring this deck along, my friends are going to kill me, I usually only bring my Standard deck along most days. But I figured, why not give this one a little spin?”
“Evert, by the way,” he would introduce himself while shuffling his deck.
One shuffle later, he would pull his own top seven, make a face—he’d been through worse odds than this shit.
He would then flick down a Port Town, pull out an Island to reveal before pulling it back into his hand—and then for some reason pulled out Preordain.
“Give me a bit,” he would continue as he looked at the next two cards—his poker face not revealing what he’d seen before putting one at the bottom, and the other back on top.
Another card joined his hand after that and he would lightly tap the table—whoops, wait, maybe the other didn’t know that was the gesture for ‘done’—he would then point at his opponent’s direction.
“Your turn.”
(Okay, it was a major pain in the ass getting a lot of copies of the OG Kamigawa land cards but he managed it. Somehow.)

Josh's neck craned toward the zone where Evert's commander rest. "Is that a planeswalker commander?" he asked. "I've only seen the original five. Didn't buy into that set. How long have you been playing for?" It had to be a long time, given the age of the deckbox. He had one just as old, almost completely white from the paint having chipped off over time. It was even from a different card game; he just liked the art, and that it was on clearance at the time. All of his deckboxes now, though, were two-piece, clear plastic ones. They were cheap, and most importantly, stackable.
Maybe he would show his opponent a photo of the wall of decks stacked upon his hotel room's desk.
Seeing the first turn made Josh happy inside. He felt he had a good matchup against a slow deck... he just needed to get going before giving the blue deck too much time. "Card for turn." A visible frown appeared on the spiky-haired man's face as he visibly re-arranged his cards in hand. This was... not the start he wanted. He wanted to be applying pressure, not waiting for his opponent to make the first move. "Rejuvenating Springs, pass." The sinking feeling grew greater as he realized how many players were in the game, turning the newly-played card sideways. "Oh, that does enter tapped, doesn't it... usually Commander is played with four players." He may have mistakenly tipped off that he intended to hold up countermagic.
Trying to distract himself from his entire turn being ruined, he tried to carry on a conversation with Evert. "So how long you been playing for? Oh right, you can call me Josh. I used to be a Magic judge... until Wizards made their judging program internal. Now you have to be a company employee to be a judge. The decisions this company makes boggles the mind."

#s://a~l3n~co/i/e2RuCq~png “Who, Gandalf the Red?” he would chuckle as the other took a second glance at his Commander.
Truth be told, today was actually the first day he was going to be testing this deck his friends had built for him, so…
“Yeah, he’s a Planeswalker. But see, here’s the thing. I’ve been playing in Standard format for a very long time. It’s only recently I’ve made my foray into the Commander format.”
He had his Merfolk deck with him somewhere in his own backpack, and that deck box was just as faded as his opponent’s own.
“My friends—who are most likely coming by later in the day since they’re not early risers—were the ones who threw this deck together for me. The only concession I had to fight for was that all my single lands had to be the original Kamigawa plains and islands,” he would chuckle.
“Why, what about your Commander?” he would hum as he tried to get a squint over on the other’s Commander.
He would then start on his turn, drawing a card and then keeping calm because—
Down went a Plains, and not too long after that came down Serum Visions, which allowed him to draw another card and then scryed for two.
He chuckled quietly, before slipping one to the bottom, and the other to the top of his deck.
After Serum Visions, he would then drop Skyclave Cleric onto the table; he had two lands now so time to get started.
“Two life to me,” he would confirm, before tapping both his land cards. “Attack,” he would cackle quietly.
“That’s my turn.”
Attacking first was always risky no matter what the circumstances were, especially if you were not the one who had the first turn because there was always a chance of getting your creature knocked out too early…

Gandalf the Red? Was his copy of the card an alter? It looked like Elminster to him. Then again, Josh wasn't familiar with the Baldur's Gate lore. "That explains all the scry cards. I'm not a big fan of the one-mana draw spells in blue, but they're quite good in your deck. Almost like rituals."
On the remark of only playing Standard, Josh shrugged. "I didn't like the idea of playing a rotating format. Commander's my baby. I like the freedom of being able to play almost any card in the game." That and being able to build whatever he wanted, without having to worry about the metagame. He liked formats that tested skills on the fly, rather than knowing how to handle a limited number of specific situations.
When asked about his own Commander, Josh slid his over, decorated in a special sleeve that was different than the rest of his deck. "Rafiq is his name. Rafiq of the Many. He gives any of my creatures that attack by itself a power boost and double strike. He might be my favorite legendary creature in the entire Magic story. Greatest paladin to ever walk Alara. How much do you know about the Alara block lore?"
Untapping his board, Josh snapped the top card of his deck into his hand. He had drawn the single most expensive card in his deck... and the single most expensive card that was legal in the format. But he couldn't do a thing with it. "No land. Go."
Even so, there was a suspicious amount of mana untapped. Being a blue player himself, Evert had to be aware of the threat of two untapped blue sources. "Speaking of Kamigawa, the new lands from the Kamigawa remaster are some of the more gorgeous basics I've ever seen. How long have you been playing the game for?"

#s://a~l3n~co/i/e2RuCq~png “Let me guess. You have enough disposable income, don’t you?” he would tease, not realizing that the crack he would make was actually true—to an extent.
And that Merfolk deck he was carrying around with him had an… interesting story that accompanied it, and how it had ended up in his possession.
“Alara, Alara…” he would hum, quietly musing on the term before untapping his mana that signified the start of his turn. Drawing one card, he blinked at it for a few moments, before realizing that he was also in a very interesting situation. At least he now had enough mana to drop just in case something came from the opposite side of the field.
“I haven’t read into the recent lore, admittedly. Can you give me a refresher?”
He would then drop an Island onto the table; and now that he had three mana—wait, wait, hold up.
This was only going to work if he had four mana on the field; why did the mana turn have to be so damned slow even in this format?
His turn was done for now, at least, because who knew what the other was brewing.
(Hopefully nothing too suspicious.)
“You know how expensive those Japanese-resdesigned lands are?!” he would groan, resisting the urge to bang his forehead on the table. “They’re not cheap! I wanted them for this deck, but my pals said that they’re still too expensive to have multiple copies of. Which is why I’m stuck with the OG lands… for now. For freaking now.”
He sighed.
“As for how long? Pretty long. Like… I started playing with my dad’s mono green deck. Some of the shit in that deck of his is much older than I am, so there’s that.”

Josh's smile grew as Evert discerned the high budget, or rather, complete lack of budget, of his deck. "Being in management tends to do that," he coyly replied as he reached for the top card of his library. "So Alara's actually really old now. It's... about sixteen years old. Anyway, the short of it is Rafiq is from a world so pure that the armor he wears doesn't cover his head or his back."
That his young opponent didn't play a thing raised a red flag. There had to be countermagic in that hand. What choice did he have, though? It would only get worse the longer he waited. "Deck, I would like a land, please," Josh said in a snippy voice, his smile turning upside down as he looked disappointed with his draw. "They are pretty pricey for basic lands, from a buck to three bucks each, depending on your colors. But they're so beautiful."
"Discard Sword of Fire and Ice to hand size, pass." Setting his hand face-down on the table in front of him, he was curious. "What era is your dad's green deck from? I started playing when I was six. That was when the first Ravnica was new. Got captivated by it when I saw someone playing a video game adaptation of it at a birthday party." That was a long time ago, when he lived closer to the state line. So close to the state line that he could work in Wisconsin and live in Illinois, if he wanted...
