001 Retail Therapy
(beep)
(beep) (beep) (beep)
The Chimchar watched his trainer with clear interest, sitting on his shoulder while his eyes were on the holographic interface. It displayed a number of squares and text that the young Pokemon didn't really understand, and the mumbling from Kon did not really help much either. He also had another window open with a free hand hovering over there, with some notes and other comments that seemed to come from other people.
❝That'll do for now, I think.❞ he eventually said, pressing a big orange button that seemed to close the screen with the text P U R C H A S E D printed on it. Not that the Chimchar could read it.
<What did you do?>
❝Just grabbed some of the free upgrades with the newest update. Looks like I dropped in while the devs are experimenting.❞ Kon rubbed his fingers, wondering if the aesthetic fire would appear in his hands, but nothing of the sort did appear. Shame, he was able to do it during the character creation preview, but then he had to buy it now in order for the effect to be applied on his person. He did end with a fire type, so investing in the Kindler class made sense. There was also the matter of the free Type Mod claim that he had yet to avail - it was sitting in his mailbox, but he had yet to pick which type would be most suitable. It wouldn't really work for his sole Pokemon in the long run, since he would eventually gain the second typing, or can the Type Mod act as a third type? He would need to clarify that one.
<Oh.> the Chimchar didn't really understand, but he did not question further. It didn't seem like what he was doing was a bad thing, anyhow. <So...what next?>
❝That's the million dollar question.❞ the trainer had been sitting on the grass, so he pushed himself up - slowly, so that the Chimchar would not lose his footing and remain on his shoulder. ❝Tutorial quests seem like the best way to go. We'll head there and try to learn more about the world we've ended up in. Need to catch up with all the other trainers, after all.❞
The Chimchar wished that he could offer something else that was of use, like any information, since, well, he came from this world, didn't he? But he was drawing blanks - he knew he should follow his trainer, and to some degree he knew how to fight. And he was to be fighting other Pokemon like himself. That was all there was to it, right?
❝Oh yeah, I thought of a name too. How does Gou sound?❞
The Chimchar tilted his head ever so slightly. Gou. The name meant nothing to him, but maybe that was also why it was suitable for a name. He nodded once.
Kon showed a small smile. ❝Do you have the capability of liking or disliking something?❞
The question caught the Pokemon off-guard. <I...don't know?>
❝Hm. Sorry, forget I asked.❞
Gou was not sure what to make of his trainer's expression. He was thinking about something deeply, perhaps. Did he say something wrong? But the topic would not be brought up again (for now, at least).

002 Rain Check
❝Koro-sensei.❞
The Kricketot turned his head - the suffix was not necessary, he had been informed that his name was now "Koro", according to his trainer, but for some reason the boy had a habit of adding "-sensei" at the end, which, based on his limited knowledge, had a connotation of respect and authority. But that was an odd thing to say, because he had just hatched not long before, and he was sure that the Chimchar that was his team member was older, and yet he did not have the suffix attached to his name. He did act older, sure, but he was not sure why that would be the case. It was just how he was, and how he would likely be.
❝Have you thought of, like, how you want to battle?❞
<Pardon?>
❝Y'know like, I made Gou a Sweeper, because he looks like he wants to hit fast and hard--❞
<I do want to do that.>
❝--but I don't know if you want to do that. There's two other options, one with being a Tank, so you can like help protect the other Pokemon and take hits, or a Support, where you can heal the others, which I think is useful? The mechanics of the battle work differently in the game so we're always taking damage one way or another, I think.❞
<Well, that sounds like an awful lot to take at once. I don't know if I'm the type who likes to battle.> he tapped his antennas together; a string of notes with no particular meaning, but a chord progression that sounded soothing to the ears. <Can I have a rain check on it?>
There was no particular emotion on the trainer. Nothing that seemed to suggest annoyance or frustration, just something thoughtful. ❝If I told you to take a class, would you follow?❞
<I must, for I am your Pokemon.> but there was the barest tinge of unease that the Kricketot tried to hide away, for the line of questioning felt strange to him.
❝Right. Well, a rain check it is. Gou can train with the wild Pokemon for now.❞
And it was like a hints of a storm had suddenly blown away; things were calm for now, but it was like his trainer was watching for his reaction, replying based on the result. It was too early to tell if it was malicious, but it was too early for anything, really - he had no choice but to trust him for he had not done anything to break that trust, and he seemed like a decent chap for the most part. Only time will tell if something will betray that, and from there he would decide on how to proceed.

003 Evergreen
The most recent fight against the unknown had bolstered him to train even harder. It felt like he was at the cusp of the evolution he so craved, but rather than constantly wishing for it to happen (demanding it in his head, biting his lip and forcing something even if there was nothing to force) - he found that it seemed more willing to come if he let the thought rest. The not so stupid monkey did comment that he was getting stronger, and while he could have easily taken it as sarcasm or cheap words, he decided to take it sincerely, because the monkey was normally sincere, and he also believed his words to be fact.
He had been practicing with Eru, the Cottonee that they recently added to the team, as she was the best equipped in dodging his flurry of attacks. It helped him work on his aiming, especially against flying targets, and because she was a Grass type, she didn't take that much damage if she did get hit by his Leafages or Seed Bombs. She also understood his apprehension with the Vulpix's healing flames, but it didn't take long for her to accept the help, and she ended up finding it amusing. (<I'm on fire!>)
Besides the Cottonee, he had also been working with Buru and Mugan. The Snubull was mostly to help train him in avoiding attacks, particularly that terrifying bite of hers, and the Druddigon has been taking more interest in these battle practices, but Kanya couldn't go all out on the baby dragon (it was useful as a reference to opponents notably larger than him). He would make sure not to use claws if he landed blows on the dragon (soft paws), but Mugan did not pull back any punches, swiping with sharp claws.
And one day, while Kanya was doing a rare spar with the monkey, it finally happened.
In the middle of a Quick Attack, he could feel his body suddenly shift and morph. It was surprisingly not painful, and even if it was, he welcomed all feeling. He could feel his gait change, and his front paws becoming something more like hands, while his back legs got stronger, and he was standing taller, and, and--
He was different, and best of all, he could punch.
But his paw was caught in the monkey's grip, and he realized that perhaps punching was not his species' inherent strong suit. That would go to the monkey, he would give him that.
The Monferno smiled. <Congratulations.>
<Thank you.>
Arthur had been watching his Pokemon go at it without his own explicit instruction while trying out one of the game's Pokemon bonding features. He was a no better cook after the whole dungeon, but he could stir a pot and put things inside. The game would handle the rest. ❝Take a break, you two. I think the curry's almost ready.❞
They glanced at each other for a moment before heading over to their trainer. Arthur placed his hands on both of their heads and gave them a small rub. ❝Glad to see that the heart-to-heart worked out. And congrats, Kanya.❞
The Floragato didn't really understand the heart-to-heart bit, but he did appreciate the pride in his trainer's voice - pride in his work and towards his goal to be stronger.

004 Eat Your Heart Out
He had no idea where these compliments were coming from. But reading between the lines, he could tell that he was the newest player amongst those chosen, of which he was able to see their usernames but not much else. Thankfully, he already knew two of them, one via association and the other with a horse and an electric dog. The last one was unfamiliar to him, but that was a minority, and he figured that it would not be hard to get along with another UNOVR player that had been here a while. Hopefully. Sarah would put them in their place anyway.
But with that confirmation out of the way, it was now time to prepare. He was sitting on the grass with his arms crossed; his back leaning on an unevenly broken tree stump and the UI sitting in front of him, displaying his party.
He could only bring six with him, and he already had more than six Pokemon in his box. With also limited information on where they would be exploring as well as what they were going to do, he had to think of what would work best in a number of situations and pray that it was enough. He didn't skip out on the high fatality of this quest, though considering that they technically had infinite lives, that was not a problem to him. He hadn't died yet, but he knew it was bound to happen at some point. Only difference with UNOVR and real life was that, well, death was not the end, thankfully!
Arthur let his starter out of his Poke Ball.
When the Monferno did not immediately receive an order, he paused, furrowing his brows, before venturing, <Yes?>
❝We got accepted in the reconnaissance team.❞
<Oh! That's...good, right? It sounds important.>
❝I could die, yeah.❞
<You could what?!> he grabbed his trainer's shoulders and shook them. <Why would you sign up for that?! You can't...you can't die!>
❝Relax, Gou, I was half-joking. Death is but an inconvenience here.❞
It didn't sound like a joke to the Monferno. The fire type could only assume that what his trainer meant was, perhaps, he could get knocked like they did in battles, before things got too dicey, and that was the end of that. A painful way to get eliminated, but that was just the end of the romp, not their life. Right?
<I'm not letting that happen. Am I not here to protect you?>
Arthur did not tell his starter that he wanted to believe he decided that for himself, but...❝I know. I called you because I wanted to know if you'd work fine with some of our newer team members. And maybe your opinion on who else we should bring.❞
The Monferno folded his arms. <You mean Anta and Eru? They're fine.>
Arthur nodded. ❝You'll have to guide them if I'm not there.❞
Gou was about to raise his voice again but then held his tongue. His trainer probably meant if they had to split up for the task. <...right, though I think Kanya might be more suited to this...>
❝Kanya will help, but they'll need a steady hand. A fire in the darkness, so to speak.❞
The Pokemon pursed his lips. <...will we...Kon, you're sure about--> he gestured a little with his hand, <--all of this?> from the time he had been with his trainer, the fire type always saw him as someone who made sure that their victory and safety was assured whenever possible. This just seemed completely out of character, like they were really jumping into the unknown, and they were not going to make it out unscathed.
Arthur didn't respond, not even with a sarcastic quip. Instead, he eventually said, ❝We'll do what we can before it arrives.❞

005 Song of Courage
❝Koro-sensei.❞
It's been a while. Specifically since they had a one-to-one talk like this, for usually he had most of his other Pokemon with him. The Kricketot watched the team grow with and without him, for he never really decided on what he should do other than play his tunes. He had never really answered his trainer's question on how he wanted to battle. Frankly, he still didn't know if he wanted to, he hadn't tried (him attacking that poor fish did not feel like it counted as battle experience). All of his trainer's other team members have battled though (or he assumed this to be the case), so he was lagging behind. A thought seized him: what if he was not important? What if he was going to be thrown away? He didn't know why such a thought seized him so, but maybe this was something related to what the grass cat said in passing. About the nature of this world, and of themselves.
He looked at his tiny, tiny hands.
<What seems to be the matter?> The Kricketot noticed that his trainer looked troubled, moreso than usual.
❝Well, we're going to...there's an expedition coming up. Scouting something dangerous. I thought...❞
Koro stared at him. <You have plenty of more capable members.>
❝We're not going at it alone.❞ a pause. ❝I thought it would be good to have someone who could help with moral, if things get really bad.❞
The Kricketot was not sure what to say. Should he be flattered? How come the admission felt like it bothered him more than made him feel needed?
❝Koro-sensei?❞
<...no.>
The answer took Arthur aback, but the Kricketot was not done. <I want to fight.>
For him to be in the sidelines, a musician in a battlefield? It was cowardly, it was shameful. He was not going to let his teammates and strangers risk their lives while he did nothing but hide in his Poke Ball, which was starting to become cramped for his antennae.
It surprised his trainer, but he was not angry; he showed a smile. Was it relief? Worry? ❝Did you ever decide what class you wanted to do?❞
He didn't know where exactly this newfound bravery came from. It was likely false, an illusion that would shatter the moment when reality would catch up to him, but he decided to ride this bravado. At least he had this memory, this moment of courage. <The one that allows me to take down our enemies, please.>

006 Song of Storms
Arthur admitted that it was hard to take a stomping Kricketot seriously, if he was to focus on how the scene looked like in front of him. But he was on his knees, hands on his thighs, curled into fists, as he watched the bug type shake his tiny hands angrily and his antennae flaring. If they hit each other while Koro moved, the sound was grating to his ears; a clear sign that he did more than just slight the little bug type.
Well, it was an anger justified.
<I thought we were there to support you!> he seethed, <I did not even set one foot in the dungeon, and when I come to, you...look at you! Utterly defeated!>
Saying the words stung was an understatement, and whatever composure Arthur had earlier was crumbling inside. He bit his lip, eyes downcast.
The Kricketot glared at his trainer, but it was mixed with confusion and hurt. <You prepared me, but for what? Was I still too weak?>
Arthur opened his mouth in an attempt to object, but the words died in his throat. In truth, he didn't battle at all throughout the whole mission, but he still brought some of his Pokemon out to help with the scouting. When he thought about it, only Eru and Koro were never brought out at all, though he couldn't imagine the Cottonee getting angry because of that. Not to say that Koro didn't have the right to get angry, but where he would normally lie, try to smooth talk his way through this situation, he couldn't find it in him to say anything at all.
The Kricketot could only hold his glare for so long. Even if he was supposed to be young, his withering sigh sounded like he had lived a lifetime. <I'm sorry. I will assume that whatever happened in that place, there was never an opportune moment. And considering your lack of usual-->
❝I lost Gou, Koro.❞
Arthur turned his head away, feeling nails digging into one of his palms.
<...oh.>
A nipping silence fell between them.
<But the monster...it still lives, doesn't it?>
The trainer nodded. ❝I need your help.❞ he looked at the Kricketot this time, and Koro could see that the young man's eyes were glassy. ❝This time, this time I think, I am sure...❞
The Kricketot walked up to him and placed one of his tiny hands; a gesture of reassurance. <We are here, Kyukon. Let us be united here. Let us know what to do.>

007 Night Signals
The Surge Steppes seemed less terrifying at night, or maybe because it was thanks to the stars and the moon, filling the skies, hidden by clouds. He loved the view of nighttime and the evening sky, but as the curse robbed him the ability to stay out in the sunlight for long, he takes special notice of the night, of a view he would become so much more familiar with if worse came to worst.
Would he be able to do it? The mist did not falter until he tried to will it into something else. He sharpened his fingers into claws. He extended it to see how far it could go. Slowly, slowly it climbed, trying to reach for the twinkling lights, but there was only so much it could fly before the mist dissipated into thin air, unable to keep itself formed.
Anta was with him tonight, watching her trainer, trying to understand his feelings. With her trainer reaching up like that, did he want to fly? Oh, she wish she could do that, carry him on her back and touch the clouds, for she wanted to see the sky too, but she was too small for that right now, and what fun would it be if she flew by herself?
She bubbled while tapping her trainer's shoulder with one of her flippers, as if calling his attention to something. She looked again at the night sky before approaching the mist that came from his hand. The Mantyke seemed to show no fear, compared to some of his other Pokemon who were more hesitant (that was understandable, it was alien, after all). She swirled around it, like it was a stalk or a string, descending slowly until she was in arm's reach.
Her smile soothed Arthur. He pulled her gently into an embrace, and they continued to watch the stars together.

008 The Road Back
Kanya didn't know what to expect when he saw his trainer again after descending into the lair of the Hearteater. He really wished he could have gone, though the exact reason as to why was elusive. Sure, he didn't want his trainer to come into harm's way - he understood that drive to protect that Gou held onto so strongly (that was why he was gone, why his trainer wouldn't look at him in the eye). But that couldn't be all there was; a desire to prove that he could do something? Be of worth? To taste victory by crushing something else in his soft paws?
So when his trainer let him out of his Pokeball along with everyone else, a mini reunion of sorts as they stayed in a grassland nook, Kanya thought that his trainer looked the same, but also different.
<Your hand.>
They were sitting side by side, wind gently billowing, tousling fur and hair. Pokemon were running around, stretching, relaxing, gathered around the three who went with Arthur to the den of the beat, listening to their grand tale of bringing back color to the wild Pokemon of Ostellia and their final face off against the "fatass bat herself".
❝...I didn't make it.❞
The Floragato furrowed his brow, but didn't immediately ask for an explanation. After a stretch of brief silence, his trainer continued, ❝I had to land the final blow on Hearteater to lift the curse.❞
Kanya remembered asking where Gou was. He learned that he was somewhere only his trainer could go to, and that it was up to him to get him back. When he saw him again without his partner by his side, his face looking like a simmering storm, he knew that there was something wrong, and that Gou was still not back with them, back home, he would like to say.
<Was that what was holding you back from finding Gou?>
❝A part of it, yes.❞ a pause; gaze far away. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't even notice Kanya calling his Pokemon by his nickname instead of an insult. ❝But I will try again. As many times as I have to.❞
<Can I nyat go with you this time?> the Floragato asked, not intending for his tone to sound like he was pleading.
His trainer shook his head. ❝It's my fault, so I will bear responsibility.❞
Kanya thought if he should say it's not your fault because he didn't even know what happened in that fateful moment, not exactly. Only instinct told him that his trainer fully believed in these words, and based on what he knew of him, that it wouldn't be completely false. However, he wasn't sure if this was the correct thing to do either: to leave him instead of offer a hand. Was there any he could even give, or would he have to face this alone?
<Then make sure to come back. Come back with him.>
It wasn't a promise, it was an order. A plea. A test, an imperative in order to hide the surging swirl of emotions underneath.
