Hooves clopped against the dirt road leading out of Briarbane and toward Birchwild Grove, Josh in Raiden's saddle as an excited Manectric ran alongside the speedy horse. Sparks clicked in the air as the their two electric fields clashed against one another, looking like the two could brew a miniature thunderstorm with their charges.
The rider's quest, taken all by his lonesome, would be twofold. The first would be to finish off the level he was currently working on. Saber had already been equipped with a saddle, and a very special one at that. Modeled after the thundercloud that the legendary Pokémon Raikou carried, it made the electric-type more closely resemble the Pokémon of his trainer's dreams. He was more than familiar with how fleet of foot the canine species was, and would realistically be the closest he would get to reining up the Johtonian god of speed. Not until postgame, anyway.
His second goal would be to track down a Vulpix. Not for use as a fire Pokémon, but for use as an ice-type. With a Huge Seal, the fairy fox could be quite the tricky steed. Worthehile, though, considering how few ice-type and fairy-type Pokémon were on the list of ride Pokémon. Plus, he needed a fairy-type if he wanted to go back into Ostellia, what with the abundance of dragon-type Invasive Species there...

Josh squeezed Raiden's sides, the black and white horse accelerating and leaving Saber behind. Not one to be outdone, static built up in the wolf's four legs before Saber discharged it, sounding like crashing thunder as he whizzed past the galloping horse in a QUICK ATTACK unlike anything the scout had ever seen. He was already going at a good clip when the yellow and blue blur rocketed past, leaving him in awe of the speed one of his favorite electric-types was capable of. If he eventually was to saddle a Raikou, this would be a good stepping stone to build up to the vomit-inducing speed the electric legendary was capable of.
"Faster, Raiden! QUICK ATTACK!" Josh commanded. The glowing equine entered a sprint of his own, but even that was not enough to keep up with Saber. All of a sudden, combat gauges appeared on his HUD despite not being within the Tall Grass. Perhaps Saber had found something waiting in the weeds.

Saber had located an Audino! They may not have been the Pokémon he was looking for directly, but they were worth a good chunk of experience, and were typically weak in combat. Once Raiden was in the same Tall Grass as Saber, Josh caught sight of the Pokémon, pulling harshly back on the Zebstrika's reins and nearly tumbling off the horse when he reared high. Perhaps working on his visual acuity would be a good idea if he wanted to ride at higher and higher speeds.
Shrieking upon being rammed, trampled, and electrocuted by Saber's SPARK, the Audino shrieked in a HYPER VOICE that drowned out all other noise and caused many small bird Pokémon to fly away. Josh's ears rung, too, taking his hands off the reins and covering his ears to try to alleviate the pain. Raiden took the opportunity to go on autopilot, STOMPING on the reeling Audino. With a weak cry, the normal-type's model vanished, Josh's experience bar stopping just short of a level-up.
One more battle it was!

The HYPER VOICE was grating, but it didn't cause any harm. In fact, it... healed Josh's Pokémon some? He was not expecting the normal-type to patch them up with the sonic attack. "Wow, that's on theme," Josh mumbled to himself, his heart still racing from nearly being bucked off his electric horse. "That will be something to keep in mind. Might just stick around and let the next one heal me up if I find another."
What a neat little Easter egg!
As the Audino disappeared, Josh coaxed his Zebstrika onward... more gently this time. Though they were used to going fast, the Pokémon still didn't like his rider making sudden moves! Wouldn't want that happening in a race!

Well, that was quick. Was this the same one that had respawned, or was this a new Audino? It had to be a new one, right? He wasn't going to turn the healing down, and this time, he would do it with less violence. "Crowd around, everyone!" Josh called out, the two electric-types surrounding and gently nuzzling the wild. The normal-type squealed, a cloud forming above them and raining LIFE DEW upon the two electric-types.
"Thanks again!" Josh waved from the saddle as he let the Pokémon get away, watching his Manectric shake his fur clean of the healing water that hadn't electrolyzed. "It might be worth catching one and teaching it how to ride Pokémon," he mused as he followed the Manectric to the next patch of tall grass. "Having such an adept healer for a raid could make the difference between survival and a trip to the Everworld."
Josh sure liked talking to himself, didn't he? He had his PokéSpeech settings on, right?

The scout checked as he let his Zebstrika wander along the weald's road, and indeed his PokéSpeech settings were on, but to a lowered setting. The setting was that only "special" Pokémon in his party could speak: his starter, starred "favorites", and other important ones. Dragging it all the way to the right would let all of his Pokémon speak, and given how much of a handful Alicia's squad was, he wasn't sure he could handle it... particularly if he ran into an ornery soul like Terry. He groaned at how difficult it would be breaking that Pokémon to the bridle after evolution.
Taking manual control again, Josh reined Raiden toward a larger field of Tall Grass, keeping an eye out for the fox Pokémon he was after. Where were all the shrines to Alola, anyway? The one Galarian one was in the Surge Steppes, which he needed to visit later to get a second healer on his squad. "The woods are getting a bit dense, Raiden. Let's pump the brakes a little," Josh said, loosening his hold slightly on the Zebstrika to get him to slow down.

Josh and Raiden slowed to the point where speed trails were no longer forming around them. While the search for a Pokémon wouldn't be as efficient at slower speeds, it gave Josh time to react to what he ran into. He could determine if the Pokémon was safe to ram and trample, such as the Sewaddle panic-spewing STRING SHOT toward its electric attacker, or the Vulpix, which he would have to carefully do battle with to maximize the odds of capture.
Though the wild vanished with a squishing noise, Raiden's legs were tangled up in the mess of bug silk. Josh slid off his mount to see how much the Zebstrika had been affected. The numerous sticky strings restricted his movement quite a bit. He needed to figure out a way to deal with them before he could continue his search.

Sitting just outside the Tall Grass, Josh looked at the crisscrossing silk tethers tangling up Raiden's legs. There were so many that the horse could barely run. "How to get this cleaned up..." the scout trailed off. The most obvious solution was to burn the silk away with Ares' fiery tail, but that would leave nasty burns if things got out of hand. Pazuzu's talons were to small to cut through them, and Xira's wing vibrations would dissolve not only the silk, but the skin beneath. He wondered what material the Yanmega's saddle was made of to feel comfortable, yet be able to withstand the strong vibrations it was capable of making with them.
Sighing, his best bet seemed to be with a combination of Ulysses and Ares, the Dewgong giving the horse a chilly shower once the flames got too close. He knew Raiden didn't like cold, but it was the best he had. "Ares, Ulysses, need a little help with cleanup here!" He released the two Pokémon, the Charmeleon looking more invested in the wild Pokémon in the Tall Grass. "Hey, Ares, can we get a hand with getting this String Shot off Raiden? Just need your tail is all."
The snippy fire-type rolled his eyes. "Had you used me instead of Raiden, this never would have happened."

"I know, Ares," Josh moaned. "If you want to be out and about... I tell you what. You want to go riding together? I'll let you control Raiden, and I'll keep Ulysses out. We'll find that Vulpix before you know it, what with us looking in two different patches of Tall Grass."
His efforts to cheer up the cranky Charmeleon were met with resistance. "The sooner I can start crushing on ladder, the better," He huffed as he grabbed his tail. "So... if I have to."
With that, Ares grabbed his tail and pointed its blazing tip toward the center of each silk thread. As it caught fire, the electric-type whinnied loudly: the sign for Ulysses to envelop him in an AQUA RING, dousing the flames. "How about we rest up--"
The lullaby of a JIGGLYPUFF would put them all to sleep, whether they wanted to or not. The fairy-type Balloon Pokémon inflated itself before gently SINGING into its microphone, causing the scout and his team of three to dream sweet dreams.

The performing fairy-type became upset as its entire audience fell asleep. Hidden beneath the bottom of its microphone was a Sharpie-like marker. The furious wild drew circles, diamonds, hearts, and stars all over the Charmeleon, Dewgong, and their trainer. Getting all of that ink out of their skin would take multiple baths, and they were all helpless to even realize what was going on.
The Jigglypuff approached the sleeping Zebstrika, its anger reaching a fever pitch when it saw the black marker wouldn't be very visible on its skin. Taking its frustration out on the electric-type directly, it inflated to a large size before landing a coup-de-grace BODY SLAM upon Josh's motionless Pokémon.
By the time Josh woke up, the normal-type was long gone, the red notification of his Zebstrika fainting making his heart race. He started to shake his other two Pokémon awake, but to no avail.

As Josh continued attempting to shake his Pokémon awake, his idle motions triggered another Tall Grass encounter, this one against a Shroomish. All these nasty encounters... was it time to invest in the Player class so he could fight for himself? Without it, all he could do was withdraw his fallen Zebstrika and fight with his Pidgey, Pazuzu.
The small bird beat his wings rapidly and vigorously in an effort to blow the grass-type away with a WHIRLWIND. Pazuzu's cooldown time left his tactic in the attack queue behind yet another sleep-inducing move. The Shroomish, frightened of all the large Pokémon, ejected a SPORE cloud in the bird's and trainer's direction, putting them to sleep before scurrying off.

Already drowsy from the Jigglypuff's lullaby, the spore cloud threw Josh into such a deep sleep that the game had marked Josh and his Pokémon as AFK. At the time Josh and Ares had awoken, he was greeted with a flurry of Pokémon knockout messages; the other wilds of the Birchwild Grove had incapacitated both Ulysses and Pazuzu, as well as left the fire-type with some nasty scrapes. Furthermore many in-game hours had passed; the sun was starting to set. Just how long had he been out for, and how long had he been logged in?
With every one of his steeds incapacitated, it was tempting to abandon the hunt for the Vulpix, visit the nearest Shrine, and log out for the day. He wasn't quite ready to give up yet, and neither was Ares. "We're not leaving without your Vulpix in a Poké Ball," the Charmeleon huffed, only to get a yawn from Josh.
He was out of it.

Josh was not only tired, but he was scared of blacking out or even whiting out. If Alicia Westfield 's impressions of Sera were anything to go by, if he whited out on a level grinding mission, he seriously doubted he would be getting his Pokémon back. "I'm... not so sure. We might be leaving empty-handed," he replied, his words running together from his head-heavy state.
Now it was less about the grind and more about seeing as many wild Pokémon as possible before his team was too exhausted to battle them. A mischievous Cottonnee floated toward Ares, a FAIRY WIND gusting around him before he whipped his tail at the grass-type. Covered in smoldering EMBERS, the wild backed down and turned tail. The Charmeleon didn't look in great shape, even with his typing giving him a defensive edge...

With every battle victory, Josh and his team's experience point count rose, and his wallet of BYTES filled ever closer to his target to unlock features he had been chomping at the bit to since finding out about the Identity Parlor's existence. He wasn't too happy about going against the Charmeleon's wishes, but he felt he had little choice.
"Ares, I think we should change course for the Noonlight Shrine, just to get everyone back on their feet," Josh suggested.
"Now that's more like it!" the Charmeleon replied, hearing his trainer make a wise decision giving him a second wind.
"We don't have to retreat completely. If we run into the Vulpix on the way, great. If not, we'll be ready for it once it shows up."
Ares turned toward Josh and gave him a pat on the arm. "Now you're learning. You're working smarter, not harder. And that's the ticket to being a successful trainer." The master Kindler embraced his Charmeleon before Josh marked his destination as the Noonlight Shrine. A marker appeared on his mini-map, and the two followed it. It was quite the walk without a ride Pokémon, realizing just how much he relied on them for travel.

Right, so, Arthur felt that it was high time he should try to find some Pokemon, even if he didn't attempt the tutorial spawn just yet. How hard could it be, finding a Pokemon, and battling and catching it? He just had to weaken it and aim the Poke Ball, right? Hm, in the earlier games there was no problem about a Poke Ball missing its target, only for the Pokemon to break free from the ball. What if he wasn't a good thrower? Well, he supposed he would cross that bridge when he got there.
This huge swath of tall grass looked like a good place as any, and there was even a little pop up explaining what Pokemon appeared here. Arthur still wasn't sure what trainer subclass he was going to work on first, but one Pokemon in particular did catch his eye: the Vulpix. He did name his own username after Ninetales, so a Vulpix just seemed like a required addition to the team. It was listed as "Rare" though, so he had no idea how long he had to wander around here in order to find one. Well, it wasn't like there was no harm in staying for a while, since Gou did need to experience in battling.
<There's eyes...> the Chimchar was walking in front of him this time, looking around almost constantly. Arthur assumed he meant that there were wild Pokemon watching them, which was what he was hoping for, anyway. But he hoped that they weren't anything that they couldn't handle. This was like, Route 1, right? He wasn't going to get mauled in here, was he?
❝Make sure to stay alert. You never know if--❞
Arthur wouldn't be able to finish his sentence. He would only be able to get his bearings after the fact - a Pokemon had somehow fallen on him (or jumped from above? From one of the tree branches?) and landed (or aimed) right for his face. There was yelling (❝GAH, GET IT OFF!❞) and frantic yanking until he manage to throw whatever was on top of him, and lo and behold - it was a Vulpix! Was he bleeding on his face from scratches? Maybe? But what a stroke of luck!
Was it just him, or was that Vulpix exuding some kind of dangerous, aggressive aura?
❝Shit uh, Gou, use Scratch!❞
The Vulpix would attack first, running in for a full-on Tackle. The Chimchar would take it head on, using his arms to push against the body attack before forcing it back and countering with sharp claws.
