It was like 'Stralia all over again with these working times (he was specifically gesturing at the one popular tea shop, at least according to the locals, that only opened on Tuesdays. What kind of shop only opened on Tuesdays and still survived? If this were in real life, he figured that the person running the place must be rich enough not to care how well the shop did, and well, that wasn't exactly out of this world. He knew people like that - they owned restaurants not for the profit, but because they had a passion for food, and it almost meant that they could have places to gather whenever they felt like it). In any case, he, the customer, did not have all the time in the world to wait for Tuesday to roll around for it to open, so he found someplace else after standing around being mad for half a minute.
The Chimchar did not understand why did they not just move on after seeing the CLOSED sign, but he was still learning a lot about his trainer. One thing the fire type did note was that his trainer mumbled and thought a lot. He would stare off into the distance from time to time, considering his next move, and he wouldn't always understand why he'd do the things he did.
After wandering around the quiet streets and finding many more CLOSED signs (and fewer NPCs), the pair eventually settled on a sleepy looking, tiny cafe surrounded by covered store windows. There was basically no one sitting down on the dozen or so chairs scattered inside and outside the establishment, but there was someone manning the counter. Arthur and the NPC shared eye contact for a few uncomfortable moments before he decided to approach.
âI'll order a long black, thanks.â he only glanced around at the rest of the menu after he stated his order, because he usually didn't get anything else. The thought then crossed his mind that he was actually in the game and not actually going to drink this coffee. Unless...taste was included in the experience? What else was included, sleep? Coffee did actually give him a pick up in energy in real life, so he wondered if he was going to feel any sort of effect while in deep dive.
He then remembered that he wasn't alone. âAre you allowed to eat cake?â he asked the Chimchar.
The Pokemon looked confused. <I think so?>
Arthur shrugged. âIt would be cruel of the game to refuse you chocolate.â he then turned back to the NPC. âI'll take a slice of that decadent chocolate cake also. The triple layer one? Yeah. How many bytes? Oh okay.â
The pair would eventually settle on one of the empty tables outside of the store, overlooking other shops, the street, and the winds. The sun was up, but hidden by large clouds - it was a clear day that was pleasantly cool despite it being summer. Arthur took a sip of the coffee he ordered and was surprised that it tasted - well, there was taste - not all that bad, but then he remembered that the requirement for Freezer was a cold drink, not a hot one.
Fuck.

How could⌠how could a place stay open only one day of the week and yet still be standing?
Either the owner was someone who had so much money in-game they could afford to run the place with an extremely eccentric schedule, or they were someone who had an incredibly busy real life they could only log in on Tuesday and have a gaming marathon session on that one day they could relax and unwind.
After hunting so many PokĂŠmon (and still falling short for a certain requirement they needed) he decided to unwind and decompress. He was accompanied by Hanzo the Greninja, walking alongside him in silent pace; the amphibian PokĂŠmonâs eyes wandering around while his human companion perused some random wares at a nearby stand before turning around and whistling his way.
âWhere are we headed?â
âOver there⌠we can check out the other place called Tuesday another time. At least this oneâs open all seven days of the week,â he cracked, throwing some shade at the strangely-named location that was open only one day of the week.
At least this place they were about to check out had delicious-looking pastries based on the window display.
âFair,â the Greninja hummed as the door swung open and the smell of freshly-baked cookies permeated the air.
âBut I thought you couldnât drink coffee?â the PokĂŠmon companion continued.
âExactly. Letâs see if they have like, a latte here.â
He would continue perusing the menu items, trying to decide what he was going to have for the day.
âYou can eat pretty much anything, right?â he would confirm with the Greninja.
âFunnily, yes.â
âWhat do you want to try?â

It took a while for the cake to be served, so Arthur tried his best not to drink much of his long black until the dessert arrived. Coffee was best enjoyed with sweets after all - he always liked chasing that combination of sweet and bitter, perfectly balancing each other out. The NPC that served them by the counter also seemed to be the only one who was waiting tables, as she had to leave the counter to place the plate on the white round table. He gave a polite thank you before letting Gou have the first bite.
Thank goodness Pokemon didn't seem deathly allergic to chocolate. <Woah! So sweet!>
âYou like it?â
The Chimchar let the piece stay in his mouth for a little bit, chewing it slowly before swallowing. He didn't respond immediately, closing his eyes as if deep in thought. <Maybe too sweet...>
Arthur let out a chuckle. âThat's fair. Maybe we'll get something milder next time.â he made sure to get some of the self-service, cold water so that they could both have something to parch their throats after the strong chocolate. From there, all that was left to do was to enjoy the coffee and cake.
But it didn't look like he was going to have a lonely morning - another pair, trainer and Pokemon, soon passed in front of the cafe before entering it. Arthur didn't recognize the Pokemon that was walking beside the trainer, but it was tall, and looked like a final evolution. A water type, if he would hazard a guess, since it looked like a frog but more humanoid or something.
<Will I evolve to be that tall?>
The question surprised Arthur for a moment, mostly because he didn't expect it. âYeah. Maybe. In a rush to evolve already?â
The Chimchar had a bit of a pout. <N-not yet.>

Thankfully, the cafĂŠ was small enough they had more time to decide on what they wanted to order when the person behind the counter returned to take their orderâa matcha latte and a slice of red velvet cakeâbefore the Greninja looked around and saw that there was one table that had enough space for them to scoot over at.
âWhat?â
âI know you donât want to sit alone soââ
At this, the human let out a flustered squeak.
âWhâhey!â he hissed, bopping the Greninja upside the head. âHanzo, really?â
âI didnât say anything!â
The quiet argument continued for a few more minutes before he made his way over to where the other white-haired human was enjoying their cake and what he guessed was a coffee.
âDo you mind?â he would ask the other, apologetic look on his face. The Greninja, on the other hand, would stand guard behind him like a quiet sentry while waiting for the cake to be served.

Arthur had actually blocked out what the other trainer and Pokemon were speaking, thinking that it wasn't really all that relevant (if the situation called for it, he would say that eavesdropping was bad, but he would be kidding himself since he eavesdropped all the time in the real world. Sometimes people speak so loud that one wouldn't call it eavesdropping). He wished he had been paying attention though, because not long after, the same pair were standing nearby him, and it wasn't like he could mistake them for approaching anyone else.
There was no one else.
âDo I mind what?â he asked, completely serious. Was he going to have to socialize this morning?
Gou also had his eyes on them both and was getting a better look at the Pokemon that stood behind the trainer. Could he be that tall when he evolved, he thought to himself again, and could he look that cool?

âAll the other tables are occupied,â he would explain as he tilted his head in the general direction of where the background ambient noise of other Trainers talking was coming from; and this was the only table left that wasnât fully occupied since the tables apparently had a two-person seating capacity.
âSorry about that, heâs easily embarrassedââ
âHey!â he would stage-whisper in the Greninjaâs direction, who would chuckle for a few moments before turning around and leaving them both alone.
Presuming that the other didnât mind having company at the table, he would seat himself across the other; the redness on the tips of his elven ears fading as he settled down.
âPretty sure some of the people here were trying to get into that weird place to try the food and drink, but had nowhere else to go that was fancy enough,â he would gesture towards the outside, pointing out the strangely-named âTuesday CafĂŠâ in the distance before chuckling quietly.

Okay, if Arthur were talking to someone else, he would swear up and down that there were barely other NPCs occupying the tables when he got here, so he really didn't think that there was any reason for this guy to be nudging into the seat across him. But when he looked around again after the player said that all the other seats were occupied, it was like stuff buffered in, and suddenly there was noise.
He would blink, completely confused, wondering if this was game logic, and if this guy had some kind of special power or was his internet just so shit that he didn't see everyone else.
Well, he sat there corrected, he supposed. âI suppose you can join in.â
His avatar was pretty, he would give the other player that much. Clearly fictional by the ears, but he wondered how this person looked like in real life, and if they were just as much of a looker. Maybe a little too feminine for his taste, but it was too early to say how he exactly felt about the other person.
He took another sip of his coffee before following where the other player was gesturing to. Oh, they were referring to that weird cafe that only opened on Tuesdays. âIs that place really that popular? I just got here, and it was one of the marked places on the map, so it just seemed like a spot to check out. The cake here isn't all that bad though.â and so was the coffee, but he had had better.
âWere you also trying to get into the cafe?â

To be honest, there may have been some latency between New York and⌠maybe this white-haired guy was either out on the West Coast, or⌠maybe Alaska, or Hawaii?
(He would internally cackle at that for a few moments, though.)
Finally seating himself down, he would then crack the biggest shit-eating smirk possible.
âYeah. I mean, ask most everyone else whoâs here and they might give a similar answer. For some strange reason that place is always marked as a highlight on this side of the world map. Funny thing is, the rumors about it only being open on one day of the entire week? Are true? What the hell,â he would chuckle quietly.
In no time flat his order would arrive; damn it why did the red velvet cake look absolutely fantasticâŚ
He then idly wonderedâwait, if this food was also virtual reality did theyâ
âOh, my god, I was just thinking. Since. You know, this is virtual reality and all,â he would continue as he waved his fork around.
âDo we gain weight from all the food we eat here?â he would chuckle quietly.

âHm, it's still not clear to me if this person is a NPC or an actual player. Could go either way really.â like, it could be a dev joke or it could be someone who's really sticking to their theme, or something. But if the locals were touting about it, then it made him more wary about the place. He supposed this one was decent, and it wasn't like he was playing UNOVR for the great food. He could always order something more suitable in real life (and actually feel a proper, complete wash of the process of eating rather than this...weird half-ness of pure taste).
Speaking of food, the stranger also had a question about it, and he seemed really chuffed about it, or at least amused by the virtual reality they were playing in. âWell, no one's force feeding us in real life. They wouldn't be able to get past the screens.â he took a piece of the cake and then paired it up with another sip. Really, the bitterness of coffee quieting down the intense sweetness of cake was the best. Whoever thought of this combination was a genius. He was a bit bothered that the cup was already half-empty; there was a bit of a brown stain on the cup that he wiped away with his thumb.
âI'm sure some people would enjoy finding that out though, being able to eat without worries, though I haven't found a place here yet that serves anything better than what I've had before. Unless you have any recommendations?â
He wondered what his Chimchar would think of the conversation, if his program could even figure out what they were talking about. Maybe the concept of real life and virtual life didn't make sense to the Pokemon. After all, if he were in his position, he would have a hard time believing that there was another reality besides the one he lived in now, but then again...

âI did a little looking around on the rumorsâapparently some big-ass high-level hotshot player owns the place.â
This was true at least somehowâif one knew how to access the listing of high-ranked players across the server, there would be a âTuesdayâ listed somewhere high up; like top 10 high up or so.
âThe thing is, maybe the playerâs so busy in real life, and they only have Tuesday as their off day to log into the game and manage the place? Your guess is as good as mine.â
He would take a little longer lingering on the red velvet cake before taking a considerable chunk and eating it in one go.
âWell⌠itâs a good place to try the things that oneâs normally allergic to in real life, you know? No drawbacks of needing a fucking Epipen when you eat something that disagrees with you.â
The matcha latte tasted earthy; but it wasnât as good as the ones served in the real world. The texture did come really close, though.
âYou know, if somehow, someday⌠they manage to make the food in virtual reality like, real, then thatâs the day I can say Iâve seen everything.â
He would chuckle softly after that statement.
Curiosity made him nibble at the otherâs statement.
âWhy, whatâs the best coffee youâve ever had? Iâm curious, since Iâm mostly a tea enjoyer.â

âAh, that so?â was that player still active, or had they decided they had enough of the place? Arthur mused what kind of player they would be to pull such a stunt. Likely they must've been an equivalent of a founder, or a day-one player, whatever they called those types of people in these types of games. Whatever the case, if he were to run into them eventually, he probably would know. âBusy-ness cannot be avoided. Living a life...â was already hard as it is. The words did not form in his mouth, though, since he wasn't sure where this conversation was going to go. Maybe the player in front of him was not in the mood for existential chatter, the separation of fact and fiction.
But he was mistaken, because perhaps the question was not as odd as it might have been. âI suppose so.â he hadn't even considered those that might've been dealing with health issues or disabilities in real life - how would they feel in UNOVR? It could easily go beyond providing experiences to people who could not, or never, experience such, but giving those things back, perhaps? He stirred the coffee in his cup, already lukewarm, inching closely to room temperature, whatever that was in virtual reality. âMaybe they nerfed the food so that it wouldn't be as tempting.â the words did not come out exactly right, but in any case, he didn't want to lean too hard on it. It wasn't like he was an intellectual.
âHard to say. It's easier to judge something as better or worse rather than best or worst.â he had one hand resting on his cheek, looking thoughtful. âBut coffee can only be judged properly if you can smell it as much as taste. Like wine, I suppose. Anyway, you will get no satisfactory response from me.â he then showed a smirk, half hidden by his palm, âWhat about the best tea you've ever had?â

The remark about nerfing the food got a chuckle out of him, rather loud he had to stifle the noise with the back of his free hand.
âYeah, I can see what you mean by thatâif they got everything right the first time, good luck getting everyone to log out of here and do their shit,â he cackled. âWith the way advancements in VR are going, Iâm not going to be surprised if they actually nailed getting the taste of food right soon.â
Getting actual food into virtual reality, though, was going to be another challenge altogether all things considered. Could technology evolve that far?
Maybe, maybe not.
Hell, it was already possible to 3D print with edible⌠the possibilities were endless.
It was inevitable that the question would get turned on him; this time it would be about tea. Oh, he had an entire litany and a half about this topic.
âWell, it depends. Commercialized tea just tastes like absolute garbage. Going to actual shops that sell the dried leaves you buy by the gram is the way to go. Are you near any of those specialty shops in your area?â he would hum, taking a sip of the almost-but-not-quite matcha latte heâd ordered.
âPlus, steeping your own tea, in your own teapot, with an actual strainerânone of that shitty artificial teabag businessâhas a different kind of flavor profile altogether. Although, you canât go wrong with a good olâ chamomile.â

âIf someone decides to focus nothing but on the taste of food, surely it will be done soon enough.â well, or so he felt, as usually with games there was normally one or a few things that were focused and polished more than others, creating an imbalance. Now, whether or not the pros outweighed the cons in making a game fun, that was up to the person, but then again one didn't need to be in a game for VR and food, he supposed. There could be a restaurant that could just use VR as their gimmick or something. What kind of cyber dystopian would that be?
Arthur would lightly shake his head. He was not exactly someone who was familiar with tea and had not taken much notice of it. His mom liked it perhaps because it made her seem more sophisticated, and all of the rich seem to love tea. Think about the health benefits! The aesthetic! But it looked like he triggered a topic that the other player liked, because he kept on going, and it felt like he was listening to a Youtube video of someone really loving tea. Like, a whole beginner crash course for it. âI get that the real deal is always better than mass-produced. Almost everything edible follows that logic. I admit though, I don't drink tea all that often, nor know of the different kinds. I think Mom likes green tea, or something? Tastes Chinese?â
His mind wandered for a bit, thinking about how if he forgot where he was, well, it was like he was in the real world, talking with a stranger. Only the stranger had elf ears and his Chimchar was still beside him along with a large bipedal frog, and they were also in a western-themed town ripped right out a movie. Okay, maybe it was more fantastical than the real world, but the feeling, the smells, the sun gingerly poking through the clouds...
âHey so, have you been playing a while? 'Cuz I'm just starting out and would appreciate any tips.â

Oh, god, if it was possible to meet up with whoever the player behind this avatar was, he would definitely take him to the closest specialty tea shop in the Big Apple.
(This was, considering, if they were on the same side of the country. But maybe a cross-country trip would be needed should the stars align and they eventually end up meeting. Who knew?)
At his companionâs next question, he would cackle internally because to be honest, his main âgameâ was not this one, but another.
âIâve been around long enough to know most of my way around the game,â he would hum as he took another bite of the red velvet cake slice heâd ordered. âWhat do you need help with, if I can ask?â
He was⌠oh so curious. The other looked like he had a good understanding of how most of the simple things worked in the game; perhaps it was one of the more complicated aspects they were confused about?

It was difficult to tell the stranger's veteran status with an answer like that. Perhaps the fact that he had a Pokemon that looked fully evolved was a better hint. âMaybe more info on classes?â he wasn't able to tell what classes the other player had equipped, and he was only familiar with the basic three: Gardener, Kindler, and Swimmer. He went with Kindler to match with his starter's typing, but he couldn't deny that the Tier 1 bonuses for the other two also sounded useful (or at least had their uses in certain situations, especially Swimmer).
âThough I guess if answering your question straight, I don't need help right now per se.â he was handling himself fine. Tutorial quests were coming along steady and it shouldn't take long for him to get his first Pokemon besides Gou. He remembered that one of the permanent events involved free eggs, so he was interested in that one. âBut if you have anything to tell me, maybe warn me about or how to spend my BYTES, that could work.â he shrugged; his expression looking a little defeated. âI don't play the part of a newbie all that well.â
He wasn't sure yet if he wanted to ask more about the other player. It would depend if he gave useful nuggets of information, he supposed, but otherwise, he felt he was more inclined to move on and make more headway on things he needed to unlock rather than sit here and chat away.
