The Duraludon grimaced as Torino had her own commentary regarding what he considered an understandable reaction. ”It didn’t look like it at first… Tikani, you get it right? Am I crazy?””Alicia wouldn’t intentionally lead us into danger if she didn’t think we could handle it. And while she can misjudge, I don’t think this is one of those times.” Tikani answered back. Feeling like the only straight man, Giyun palmed his face. Which created a rather loud clanging noise from the impact of steel on steel. ”They can have it back. Once we’re ready to run very, very far away from this corrupted forest.” Alicia replied to Torino’s playful warning. She did feel a bit better knowing that they wanted it back. It meant it wasn’t intended to cause them any subtle troubles. She just… needed to keep playing the veritable mini game this little excursion was becoming. Fortunately her own words also reassured Giyun a bit. The Duraludon could accept things when implied that way. Using this as a way to stay out of trouble until they didn’t need to be on guard anymore was… not ideal. But he could live with it. With how thick the forested part of the maze was getting, he was quickly beginning to realize they were in deep trouble if they had actually gone through with fighting it out. ”Why don’t you leave a similar trail, Alicia?” Tikani asked curiously, wanting to distract from the potentially dangerous situation if they weren’t careful. Anything to keep their minds from going insane about what was hanging overhead. ”I usually focus it on just my hair. I can leave a trail if I want to though.” the pinkette answered back, appreciating the brief discourse. Looking over to Torino as her fellow pink-haired Gardener frolicked with nary a care at the moment, Alicia began to wonder. Add in the fact she had apparent knowledge of a different language that she was likely more comfortable speaking… ”…” She had opened her mouth briefly. To ask a question she might regret later. But then she thought better of it and shook her head. They had enough potential troubles with the flowers and trees around them. ”Gathering samples to be looked at later?”She hadn’t given the guilds much thought. Everywhere else she’d been too much of a lone wolf to even consider joining one long term. But Torino’s display did proudly show she was part of ‘Mythstar’, much as other MMO games would. With how this game was, there was a probability that someone else was researching the Corruption much like Bunya was. Hopefully someone a little more level headed. Maybe they’d find another variety or two further in. If they would remain unbothered at least. Either way, Alicia herself was a little too leery about the flowers after the beast they had to chase off earlier. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

"Yes! Flowers for my garden," Torino said happily. She had been collecting flower samples from all around UNOVR and replanting them in Mom's house back in Briarbane. Well, that had been the plan, anyway. "It is Mama's garden, but I only completed the girasoli before it was attacked! Lots of ice, and bandits."
"Kyukon and I will go back and fix the house and save Mama," Torino promised, her jaw set in determination. For now the samples would have to languish in Torino's inventory, waiting for the day that Mama's house was once again a safe haven.
As the black trees thinned, the moss and stone walls of the maze stretched onward, deeper into the heart of the shifting construction. Torino let Alicia take the lead, relying on her friend's obvious strength to keep them safe.
During their walk through the dark forest, Torino's tome had dulled to barely a mumble. But now that they were leaving the trees behind the voices were returning, singing in harmony and full force. She caught snatches of words, little phrases and whispered trills that made her want to plug her ears.
"They are louder now!" Torino said, grimacing as her Redacted Ledger sang in tune and time with Alicia's. The two were synchronizing. "Do you think they are singing to each other?"

Alicia nodded softly, grimacing at that. She worried about the fact that Torino seemed to be unconcerned about what picking likely Corruption-based flowers and transplanting them could do to their new locale. What if they started spreading it into the already purified zone? Or perhaps they would wilt once replanted? The more exotic the flower, the more demanding its requirements tended to be. Some were particularly frail after all. ”Ice…?” Alicia asked curiously. ”Is there something I’m missing? Briarbane’s fine last I checked. I should know, I keep going there to see if I can catch a Noibat.” Certainly she was missing something here. There was some kind of disconnect going on… Still, she was happy to break away from the dark forest. And happily took the leading position when Torino surrendered it to her. But the singing of the ledgers was making her grimace as well. She certainly would rather they stop the singing. In that respect the black forest was something of a temporary blessing. ”Possibly. Either to each other, or together towards something else.” Alicia grimaced, shuddering. With another grimace, she felt chilled by a thought. ”… Or to us. Singing to whatever we picked up when we first grasped that tome in Midas Corp?” For a brief moment, Alicia had to remember the saying about Power and Corruption… and she was certainly strong nowadays. Of course, with Alicia now in front of her, Torino would be able to see her status more readily. When had it changed...? Alicia hadn’t seemed to notice a debuff’s existence yet. But it would probe haunting if Torino read it. THE ABYSS GAZES BACK> And It Hungers… Waiting… DURATION - 999:99:99The Hero Aspirant had something going on. What, exactly, wasn’t immediately obvious. But the duration wasn’t ticking down at all. Something, somewhere, was applying it continually. And it was undoubtedly bad news for Alicia when that came to a head. ”Regardless of the why, can either of you shut the books up?” Giyun asked, shuddering. A motion that caused his carapace to rattle like a giant maraca briefly. ”Even I can only take so much of this…! Makes me think the bloody things are summoning… I don’t know!””Do your best to tune it out Giyun. I doubt these Ledgers will take too kindly to being forcibly silenced for long.” Alicia advised, slowly waving her Mock Solar Blade around to keep the way ahead illuminated. Whatever was causing the debuff seemed to be a distant concern. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

As they wandered down the changing halls, Torino noticed Alicia Westfield's status. She read it a few times, not recognizing the first phrase. "Alicia, are you hungry?" Torino asked. She let the question hang for a moment.
"The sign above you says you are hungry. And waiting. Are you okay? I have food!" She was ready to open her inventory at a moment's notice and serve up all manner of pre-cooked and piping hot dishes. Torino had recently discovered the in-game cooking minigames, and had gone on an absolute tear making all manner of experimental and regional delicacies. She secretly hoped that Alicia was hungry, so that she could share some of her Thundering Pasta.
"It is very noisy!" Torino agreed. The book muttering had droned into the background, but as Giyun brought it back up she felt a frown crease her face. How could she have ignored the annoying noises! "Maybe we can make them quiet," Torino suggested. She wrapped her book in a thick coat, but the singing was the same as ever. She tried to return it to her inventory, but that option didn't exist anymore. "I cannot put it away!" she told Alicia, a little worried. "What else can we do?"

”… Uh, kind of? Just a bit, how’d you-?” Alicia answered back, before cutting herself off. A sign? Forgetting her original question, she flicked through the system to get a look at her own status. Heedless of the worried glance she got from Tikani, the hero-aspirant dryly swallowed. While Torino might not have understood the message presented by the debuff she’d acquired at some point, Alicia herself did… ”‘And if you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you’…” Alicia muttered under her breath, reciting the philosophical quote. While not an avid reader of the individual’s writings, it was amazing what a bit of doomscrolling let one find in their melancholy. But certainly she hadn’t…? Was that little bit enough to cause… some kind of domino effect? … Except that wasn’t her first encounter with the Corruption. That accursed event that made her shiver just a little bit was in a realm steeped in Corruption, wasn’t it? That was the initial start point. It hadn’t done much to her, but Tikani had suffered under it before the crash. But now? Now she had invited some of that wicked power in. Made an opening within herself to allow more to pour in. And for it to mention hungering… Her mind was already conjuring up the sounds of gnashing fangs. A gnashing that would realistically be accompanied by the snapping of bone, the shredding of flesh- ’Calm. Down.’ the would be hero thought hard to herself, taking a deep breath to banish those errant thoughts before they gained too much traction. Panicking about it wasn’t going to make anything better. That didn’t change the simple facts though. This… was bad… Bad in a way Alicia wasn’t sure she was ready to deal with. While she wasn’t expecting smooth sailing, the heroic path she wanted to traverse was about to encounter more pitfalls and stumbling blocks than she was expecting. ”… Ya look like ya’ve seen a ghost there, Boss. And I dun mean no Gengar or Mismagius either…” Giyun commented in concern. ”You feeling alright?””May I was worse off then I thought…” Alicia replied while waving off the actual thing sending chills down her spine. But that meant she’d have to sit down and eat. Given her weapon, that would be a problem. And she was unwilling to let such a potent weapon go so soon. So she puzzled briefly over how to keep it even though it technically wasn’t equipment in the standard sense. Perhaps if she expanded her Class’ power in a lattice over it… Her blade shimmered a bit and gleamed as a framework appeared over it. Carefully, Alicia placed the energy weapon across her back as if sheathing it. It was certainly warm to the touch…. But not beyond what she could bear. And so she glanced around, taking stock of the area before taking a seat. ”Giyun, Tikani, can I trust you two with the overwatch?””Sure thing, Boss.” Giyun answered. ”Of course.” Tikani added. She wanted to say more, as she wasn’t fooled. But there was no real way to broach the topic unprompted without trouble. And there was the bloody book’s singing to deal with too. Attempting to return it to the inventory ran into similar problems that Torino had encountered. And so… probably against her better judgment, she set the spine of it on her knee and opened the accursed thing. At the very least the tone would become one-note once it was held open. And plenty of things were blotted out, as was appropriate for calling something Redacted. Whatever was coming, though, she’d need power for. At this point, she was probably doomed to become a darker kind of hero. Or even a full out anti-hero. But better that than having to cut her tale short. … And her tome, at least, suddenly fell silent. ”… This thing wants attention the way a needy toddler would keep screaming and having a fit...” Alicia groused out with annoyance. ”Not my preferred choice of reading material at meal time, but it’s that or the song…”——————————————————————— Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

Torino leaned against a wall and took out her own ledger.
As soon as her hands touched the supple spine, its shrill singing quietened to a dull hum. Her hands moved along its front edge, and the hum dulled, warmed by anticipation and connection.
"It is quieter now," Torino said, smiling at Alicia. She opened her own ledger, revealing a random central page full of redacted text. Corruption crawled along the pages in ragged bars, blacking out corporate secrets and ingredients for unknown rituals. She frowned. "Alicia I cannot read this. The words are all hiding."
Torino flipped back to an earlier page. It was all the same. A solid block of business information lacking context, clarity, and most of its words. "How do we read this?" Torino asked. She turned the book upside down, half hoping that the crawling ink would slide right off the page.
It didn't.
"Hit it!" said Ciambella. "Hit it hard!" Torino looked reluctant, so the little elephant backed up. "I'll do it. Just put it on the ground."
"I do not like that idea mio cara. My grandmother would not like me hurting books. She says that every book has some heart in it." Torino looked down at the imposing ledger. "But maybe this one is hiding its heart."
"Alicia! Can you read?"

Idly, the hero aspirant imagined that both of their grandmothers would advise them to burn these books. She was with the Phanpy on this one but… ’Some hero you are…’Alicia grimaced at that. It looked like ‘Helen’ from the Trial was coming back to haunt her… Well, she knew that can of worms was going to crack open again eventually. It just had to be now, wouldn’t it? ’If you really are trying to be a hero, have Tikani fry it already.’”It’s not that simple…” she thought to herself as the intrusive thoughts started beating on her mind again. ”The damage is done, and a step has been taken on a dark path. I don’t think I can get off it by going ‘oops’…”’Quitter… Coward… What a wretched thing you display yourself as now. That’s a slippery slope to a nice and fiery place you know.’”Maybe so…”So lost in her thought was she that she was startled as Torino suddenly called her name. To ask if she could make heads or tails of the ledger’s writings. ”Not yet.” she answered. ”But I have a dumb idea.”The Ledger wanted attention. The Corruption within likely wanted something to cling to. And with that debuff now hanging over her like the Sword of Damocles… what choice did she have but to continue? So she drew her fingers over the pages her Ledger was open to. WARNING> Direct Interaction wi-
> Y/NThe prompt hadn’t even finished spelling out its warning before she had signaled to continue and dismissed it. She… knew she was getting into some bad stuff. That this was going likely going to cost her one day… But with the warning messaged dismissed, the ‘ink’ grasped onto her fingers. The splotches began to animate on their own, crawling over the page towards her. But only the one page… and as she pulled her fingers away, the redacting ‘ink’ peeled away with them, clinging to her. Seeping in, starting to course through her. The feeling screamed of wrongness. Of a kind of violation that defied physical example. But Alicia had braced herself for it. Grimacing, but saying nothing as the black ink disappeared into her. … mostly. For a few more seconds, several veins and arteries in her hands were highlighted in black. Pulsing in time with her heartbeat. And then they were gone. Just how far would she fall…? ”It’s… costly… but it there’s a way to undo the redacting, at least a little bit.” Alicia noted, her voice tense as she was coming down from the strain she’d locked her own body up for to endure. And oh what horrible things she got for the price she just paid. Midas Corp was deep into the research of this power, wasn’t it…? ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

Torino took a big step back, eyes wide. "Ah! Are you okay?" she asked, voice strained. "You did not have to do that!" She held no judgement on whether it was reckless or unwise, only that she hated seeing her friends in pain.
Her eyes traced the new black lines that tangled up Alicia's arms like rotten roots. The singing had dulled even further now, as if the song had slipped into Alicia's veins. Torino's book had quieted too, though whether it was sated or simply anticipating a similar offering from Torino was impossible to say.
She carefully opened her book to the same page as Alicia's. The redaction pattern was identical. Were the contents of the book linked?
On this particular page the black bars of corruption had been pulled away, leaving sections almost legible. It looked like a shopping list of items for a particularly gross recipe.
The page ended there, with the process for combining the items likely detailed on the following page, which was still fully-redacted.
Torino studied the recipe, the words hard to make out with their still-missing letters. Certain words were clear enough, like acid, rust, sand, and bucket. She honed in on a word she knew well: petals. "Ah! It says something here!" she pointed, not touching the book.
"Petals! And it says something about them being in a maze! Do you think that's here?"

”I’ll be alright.” Alicia assured, only half-believing it herself. ”It wasn’t as bad as it looked.”It was worse… Tikani glanced over her shoulder, a deep worry etched into her own expression. She wanted to help her partner… but what could she do? This wasn’t something she could really stop, was it? She knew Alicia got stubborn when she got her mind made up. Unwilling to back down, even if now she might realize she’s bitten off more than she could chew. Perhaps that was what made a Hero, and the difference between one and a mere fool lay in the results… Alicia huffed to herself closing her eyes. She’d read much the same before Torino had a chance to do so. Sunflower petals, presumably the ‘Midn-‘ redacted word extended to ‘Midnight’. Bleach was straight forward enough. Millennium Rust? She couldn’t imagine that being anything else. A Childhood Treasure… that was concerning to say the lease. What could she possibly have that could cover that? Acid from some creature, presumably a poison typed Pokemon, might be difficult to stomach. The specification… she’d get to that later. Deep Silt from the Harbor was largely a trip with the Swimmer class. In possibly Ultra Beast infested waters… not a charming prospect so soon after Midas Corp. “Ra-um” Watch Dial… she had an idea but it didn’t seem likely. If she was right she was taking a trip back into the abandoned laboratory. Lost Time Sand… she had no idea. Might involve Mistra? Wrist-Twist Iron, for what else could the redaction be covering in that word, that could be interesting to figure out… Her curiosity was certainly piqued. But this… was definitely funneling her down that darker path further if she pursued it. … Sunk Cost Fallacy was a frustrating feeling… ”I can’t think of another Maze off the top of my head. And this one does have flowers.” Alicia mused, looking along the path they had been walking on before this pause. ”And if my recollections and math are correct, we’ve been going deeper and deeper. Kind of surprised we haven’t seen another of those monsters all this time.””So we keep going?” Tikani asked. ”Wait we’ve been going deeper?” Giyun asked, eyes widening a bit. ”I am… not fond of that idea.””I know, Giyun…” Alicia whispered out. ”But things are… a little more dire now.”The Duraludon grimaced at that. ”Boss…? What’d you get yourself into in that place…?””… Something I wasn’t ready for.” Alicia answered. ”I need you to have my back more then ever. You have it…?””… Always, Boss.” Giyun replied after a moment of poignant silence. ”I do too.” Tikani added. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

"I hope this is the right maze," Torino said, putting away her tome. Torino looked up at the slivers of sky visible at the top of the high, stone walls. It was hard to track time and location within the maze, but at least every turn was 90 degrees. "You have been doing math?" Torino asked, as they pushed on again, deeper into the tangled construction.
Alicia's words were prophetic. Within minutes they spotted another one of the roaming black plant creatures through a gap between sections of stone wall. Torino clapped her hands over her mouth as the thing shot past them, clearly not noticing their presence as it made its way...somewhere.
"Are they looking for us?" Torino asked, unsure. At first she had thought that the black plants were chasing her through the maze. Had they just forgotten about the intruders? Or were they never after her in the first place.
Another flash of black on the other side of the wall. Then another. Were they all headed in the same direction? "I see many," Torino noted.
And then the cracked in the wall began to open.
Torino ducked out of sight as huge pieces of stone moved to the side, revealing the gathering in the area beyond.

”Mhmm.” Alicia mused. ”Mainly in the form of tracking our orientation angle-wise with each turn we made. As long as the path behind us hasn’t shifted, I should be able to lead us back out once we’re done. But if it has, then…”She trailed off at that, shaking her head. Hopefully it hasn’t. And worst case scenario they still had fast travel. But she didn’t care to use it if she didn’t have to, for the same reason she wanted to take her time seeing the sights as he traveled. Certainly she made use of Tikani’s Electro Drift often nowadays, but that was mainly when she was in a hurry. Or traveling somewhere she’d already been. When the next area was released, or Mistra was purified, she’d slow down again to really appreciate the view. ”I just had to say it.” Alicia grumbled as they were nearly caught by a plant beast. Her hand went to the sun sword she molded from Tikani’s Solar Beam, preparing to whip it out. … And it proved largely unnecessary. The beast passed them by without so much as a glance in their direction. ”… I don’t think so? Maybe perhaps because we didn’t disturb the blackened forest we left a bit ago? … Well, mostly at least. Or do we have that black pollen on us still?”It didn’t feel like any of those were the right answers, however. But as the opening split wider, Alicia and her Pokemon also hid at first. Being caught out was… inadvisable without some sort of idea, she imagined. But still nothing… except the sloshes of water? ”… Stay there for a bit.” Alicia said softly over to Torino as she slowly peeked out. The aspiring hero swallowed dryly, seeing a number of the plant beasts lumbering around. The scene almost made her think of a swamp, with how murky it first appeared. But no. The water, while dark, was far and away from being ‘dirty’ at all. Blackened from the Corruption in the plant beasts. But clear all the same despite that. The sheen was too pristine to ignore as long as it wasn’t being disturbed by ripples. Perhaps a more accurate comparison was- ”… almost like a lotus field…?”Alicia tsked softly, shaking her head. Everyone would have very good reason to yell at her after what she was considering doing. But her curiosity was burning and… well they were this deep already. … man that Sunk Cost thing was coming up way more often then she’d like all of a sudden. Focusing, she closed her eyes. Trying to mentally find where the Corruption she’d taken in was resting. Pulling it out a bit, putting it on display for the sake of trying to almost… ‘blend in’ somewhat. Obviously different in other ways but otherwise trying to present that she was ‘on the same side’. And then she carefully stepped out of hiding and through the gap in the wall. ”BOSS!?” Giyun hissed out in a panic. The Duraludon was about to charge out to chase Alicia down. But he let out a strangled yelp as he was suddenly wrapped up in vines and hoisted up. ”What are you doing, Tikani!?Tikani, who was taking full advantage of how unbelievably light Duraludon were all told, kept a close eye while Giyun flailed in her grip. ”… Trusting a gut feeling.””I feel like the straight ‘mon of a comedy routine…! Except we could actually die here if we goof up!” Giyun snapped out. Tikani didn’t dignify Giyun’s griping with a response. Instead, thoughts of what death really meant to them all invaded her mind. Would they have been whole again already, with Fumar and Yggdril back in the team, if they had simply died in Midas Corp…? From what little she remembered, Alicia had not delayed at all when trying to reach her… It chilled her to think that death might’ve been a kinder fate. Both in general and what it implied about the world. So she watched as Alicia carried on. Wondering if perhaps they had gotten closer to the center that had been spoken of. That the prize they’d learned about was here in this midst of this watery field. ——————————————————————— Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/3] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Torino

Torino snuck out of her hiding place, following Alicia towards the aquatic flowers. She could hear muffled humming from inside her bad. The Corrupted Ledger was getting restless. "I think we are near the singing," Torino said.
The wandering plants were still, planted deep in the mud of the dark pond. But it wasn't mud. It was liquid corruption that the plants were rooted in.
Water like diluted tar sloshed and settled across the lotus field.
Torino stopped at the edge and put a hand on Alicia to stop her stepping out into the waters. She pointed.
The corrupted waters pulsed like the top of a giant speaker. Ripples spread from the far side of the liquid field, lapping gently at the plants and banks like waves in a pool.
The humming grew louder.
The ripples grew in size and frequency, like notes of a song buried deep in Torino's hind-brain. Something about the music called to her. Told her that she knew the singer. And she should know no fear.
A shin-high wave of corruption slapped at Torino's legs, breaking her out of her introspection. "We should move back," she hissed to Alicia, showing worry for the first time. "The singer is coming."
Torino backed away from the lapping waves, her feet stinging from the corruption.
The plants swayed along with the dark tide, and at the far end of the pond a massive black bud broke the surface of the water.
It was bigger than a caravan. Wide and beautiful, and covered in curved petals so dark that Torino could only guess where they overlapped. The top third of it was now above the water, and the pulses of sound shook the water into a low, choppy sea.
Torino covered her ears. Ciambella clamped her ear flaps tight to shut out the invasive song.
"It is time to go!"
