At long last, Josh had done as the bouncer at the Identity Parlor had asked him. He had filled his wallet with the exorbitant sum of 2,000 BYTES. And not one BYTE was stolen or earned unscrupuously. All of it was hard-earned, through blood, sweat, and tears. His own sweat and tears, and the blood of his Pokémon.
It would have been his own blood, too, had he bought into Player at all. He wasn't doing that yet, though, not until he had spoken to Alicia Westfield and the gang about Ironsmith. Because he didn't want to fight with his bare hands, or even a little magic. He wanted to fight with an electrical sword, dammit.
Moving his fat wallet into his front pocket to keep it safe from would-be thieves presumably everywhere in this seedy part of Briarbane, Josh sent Alicia Westfield a direct message.
DIRECT MESSAGE> You there, Alicia? I'm in Briarbane, six blocks east of the Identity Parlor. If you're not busy, would you mind accompanying me there? I'm a little nervous walking around with this much cash.
Clicking "send", he waited for a reply before walking any further west. Letting Luna out of her Poké Ball, the scout gently stroked the Liepard's luxurious fur.

DIRECT MESSAGE> Coming. I’ll guard you.Short, clipped, and perhaps a bit emotionless. It was unlike her usual return messages. But if he had seen the condition she had been in at the end of the ill-fated Midas Corp dungeon, he’d likely understand. And arrive Alicia did in short order. She was impossible to miss, considering the entourage she was bringing. NPCs gasped and quickly shuffled out of her way. For the Gardener had arrived in force with some of her most imposing Pokemon in tow. Giyun to her left, Tikani to her right, and Crios rumbling behind her. Gone was her usual cheerful demeanor. But this was nothing like the turmoil she had during their expedition into the Moonlit Grotto that she’d at last expounded upon. Rather than bottling up despair and hopelessness, the metaphorical bottle was holding back anger. Anger towards the one behind the kidnappings of her friends. And who knew what that accursed tome might have done to her… Without a word, she made motions with her hands, effectively ‘molding’ her formation around Josh and Luna. This level of intimidation was very unlike her, but it would be perfect for making opportunistic folk think twice about bothering them. The Gardener casted a glance towards Josh, trying to smile, before nodding to him to lead the way. The girl was eerily silent… ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Quick and to the point. That reply was very much unlike her, as was the frightening demeanor surrounding her when she arrived. Luna was on edge from seeing Alicia's furious-looking Pokémon despite Josh soothing her. Looking like she wanted to get in and out quickly, the young man wouldn't hesitate to get moving to the west. At the speed she seemed to want to go, they would cover six blocks in little time at all.
He wanted to make small talk with Alicia to try to cheer her up. He knew exactly why she was so frustrated. He was frustrated on the inside, but kept his frustrations bottled up. "I'm... so sorry for your loss," Josh attempted to console her, a flurry of level-up messages flying across the top of his HUD. He smiled when he saw two names in particular within:
Granmarg and Ixion.
"I don't think they're dead, though. They're out there somewhere. And if you need help getting them back, just ask. I'll be there."

”Thank you…” Alicia replied after a moments hesitation. The vengeful flame surged ever so briefly, forcing her to make an effort to keep it from spilling out. No one here was involved in the loss. No one here deserved her anger, deserved to be snapped at by her. ”And I know they’re still alive out there… one of them dragged Yggdril away… but I could tell he was still breathing. When the time comes…”She trailed off at that. She heaved a sigh as she tried to rein in the awful sensations she was feeling a bit more. If only to make being around her easier. ”Just… please don’t forget yourself…” Tikani suddenly added, glancing in concern. Alicia tensed a bit at the soft words, closing her eyes. ”I’m trying…” the Gardener answered her starter. Then she turned to Josh. ”It’s hard… when some of your only friends are snatched away before your very eyes. I had no one before UNOVR… feeling forgotten by the world. So it hits differently. Harder. Sharper.”Giyun and Crios joined in with their own concerned expressions at that, but said nothing. What could they say? ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Tikani's words resonated with Josh, and he repeated them in front of Alicia. "I get it, too. I went through the same thing you did. I love Ixion and Granmarg so much. Granmarg was the very first Pokémon I got to ride here. It was a magical experience... one I'll never forget. You've been in the saddle yourself. You know how awesome it feels."
As the two crossed the final intersection leading to the Identity Parlor, Josh gave Alicia a pat on the shoulder if she allowed it. "But please... I know you want to be a hero, but you won't be able to protect anyone if you die. I know you want to protect your friends, but you have to protect yourself too. Watch your own health. You can be a hero without being a martyr. Because I swear to Arceus, if I see your name in an obituary, I'm following you down to the Everworld and dragging your fucking ass out of there."
A bit insensitive? Yes. Was it necessary to drive home the point? Yes. Such was the nature of the Precision F Strike.
Josh shook as he approached the entrance to the Identity Parlor, reaching for a wallet filled to the brink. He might need to procure a bigger wallet if he was going to hold this much cash regularly! It may have even looked disgusting to the Gardener seeing Josh hold so much cash. The Parlor's bouncer looked down at the contents of Josh's hands, amazed. "Congratulations, member. Right this way."
He followed the doorman inside, Alicia perhaps getting a glance at the inside of the building. It had similar decor to a nightclub. And did he say "member"? Did that mean he could come back at will? Stopping at a cage similar to one at a casino, Josh stated his business. Alicia may have been able to overhear his request:
"I want to make myself younger. Make me... eleven years old."

Alicia’s eye twitched a bit as Josh relayed to her what she already knew in an attempt to sympathize with her. How amazing the experiences one could have were that he wouldn’t be able to easily reclaim for the foreseeable future. Still, she listened, because he had a point. He got enough to understand a bit of where Alicia was coming from. And then he went on with rhetoric she’d already heard from her scared party members in one form or another. She watched him impassively as he implored her to be careful. To care about herself as well. To stop because you can’t save them. That wasn’t what he said. She knew it wasn’t. But in a brief moment of weakness it came off that way. Then her eyes widened as Josh dropped a verbal tactical strike on her. For a second, all thought stopped as she processed that. She laughed. A harsh, barking sound that managed to be simultaneously forced and genuine. Something broke at Midas Corp it seemed. ”I appreciate the thought. Truly I do. But if you do see my name there? Be the smart one…”It was a haunting reply. It was the same words she’d said to him when he tried to convince her to leave. Acknowledging that this path she was starting to walk was dangerous, foolish even. And that she’d walk it anyways, whatever consequences may come of it. As well as implying that there wouldn’t be anything for him to drag out of the Everworld. If Players could even end up lost in there. She acknowledged that there was a remote chance that it was possible. Whatever event the world of UNOVR had in store for them regarding their stolen Pokemon couldn’t come soon enough it seemed. As much as Josh’s words got through to her, Alicia’s reply told, or perhaps reminded, him that she could be incredibly stubborn. It was one thing to have a moment of crazed madness. It was another to acknowledge the madness you were engaging in and continuing anyways. Alicia then heaved a sigh once Josh parted from her company to go to the Parlor. Having been here when they first discovered the monetary value that was required, it didn’t surprise her one moment that Josh’s wallet was stuffed. The decor within and Josh being called a member was a surprise though. She was expecting something more… high-class? Perhaps? She didn’t know. All she knew was that she had to start scouring both Asper and Ostellia for means of enhancing her abilities and those of her remaining Pokemon. She did quirk an eyebrow when hearing the exact age Josh wanted his in game avatar to be reduced too. She could imagine there being minor issues going forward regarding that. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

After an unintelligible exchange (Josh's voice carried, but not the employee's), he was led out of Alicia's sight. He wasn't sure what kind of technology was in the back room, but it had to be pretty wondrous. The young man was presented with shoes and an outfit that were clearly too small for him. Led to a fitting room, he was asked to put on the children's clothes. Nearly ripping the fabric, he got the shirt beyond his head, feeling like he could choke.
All of a sudden, the fitting room erupted in mist. Alicia might have been able to hear the sound of a clock tower's bells ringing rhythmically, as well as a ticking sound synchronized with them. When the mist and sound ceased, Josh comfortably fit in the new shirt and shoes, his old bottoms on the floor. Switching into the ones he was provided was a snap. The real feedback on the transformation was having to reach up instead of down for the doorknob. A squeakier "Thank you so much" as he returned from the back room was the first sign that Josh really had changed.
The second was who walked out of the Identity Parlor.
It certainly wasn't the Josh that Alicia recognized. The young one was as short as an eleven-year-old could be, a true midget even among older children. He stood only a couple inches taller than his Liepard. Climbing onto the cat's saddle with ease, he smiled toward his friend. "How about we wander town for a bit?" the young boy suggested. "Gotta get Luna here used to me!" A purr from the dark-type rattled Josh and made him shiver. Riding a big cat was going to take... some getting used to...

A soft smile crossed Alicia’s lips as she heard the gong of the bells. And in that moment, out of her sight, her assembled team breathed a quiet sigh of relief. The trainer they knew from Before was still in there, somewhere. Just… buried. Lost. But the mist was clearing, and Alicia got ready to greet her friend in his new appearance. And “boy” what a difference. She expected a decently tall kid to walk out, not a midget. Was this intentional? A fluke? Was he originally this short way back, given she knew him out of the game now? ”Well hey there.” the Gardener couldn’t help but quip, smirking. As Josh mounted up onto Luna’s back, she smiled and nodded. ”Sure. But first-“She suddenly reached out and gave his cheek a small pinch, snickering as she did. ”What the heck, you are adorable like this! Was being this small a planned thing?”Of course, before the boy scout (a thought that made her snicker again) could try any kind of retaliation, she promptly retreated to the relative safety of Crios’ saddle up by the Onix’s head. Of course, the ore serpent still leaned down enough so they could continue conversing, but even with her legs dangling on one side Alicia was well out of reach, thumbing through menus for getting used to riding her behemoth. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

"Hey, hey, that hurts!" the boy squeaked, still not used to his new voice. With a younger body came different... everything. It felt awkward sitting upon a mount, yet being face to face with the now much older Alicia on foot. "It was," he answered his friend's question. "I wanted to be as small as the game would let me." And that he was. That he could fit on a normal-sized Liepard without issue was a sign of just how petite he was. "It's perfect for me, though. Think how many doors this will open!"
Josh tugged on Luna's reins as hard as he would turning one of his horse Pokémon. With a sharp meow, the dark-type performed a U-turn, now heading deeper into the Western District instead of back the way they came. "Whoa, Luna!" the boy yelped. "This is so different! I wanted her to turn a little, and she turned a lot!"

Alicia giggled a bit, feeling a bit of relief from the overwhelming rage she’d been under. It was certainly still there in the background, waiting to be unleashed. But she could… shove it away for the moment. She decided to not mention that this might close some doors as well, namely in the regards of the Zapdos duo he wanted. ”I’m gonna start calling you a boyscout now, I hope you know. The joke writes itself really.” Alicia commented with a grin. And then he made a generally understandable mistake, for those without his dreams of what to ride. He pulled on Luna’s reigns like she was a horse. Alicia winced and chuckled softly as they about-faced in an instant. ”Easy! For someone who wanted to ride a big cat so much, I’m shocked you didn’t think to check how sensitive cats are and how tightly they can pivot! Tug with like… a tenth of the strength you would with the likes of G-, Raiden!“She cut herself off there abruptly, before going to the other horse the boyscout used. Josh didn’t have Granmarg anymore. Wouldn’t for some time until they found where the Beasts were holding them all… She had to find a way… ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Josh broke out into hysterical laughter at Alicia's joke. It was so true, yet so pointed. He was a scout, and he was indeed a boy now. He couldn't even be mad at the jab. "I'm sorry, but that was so rich!" he huffed, Luna rolling her eyes at her rider. This was the boy that was holding her reins? The Liepard wanted to make a snide remark, but respectfully held her tongue.
Josh had failed to think how each would control, but it made sense. It was like how every character in a racing game had different parameters... much like the Pokémon on the race course all had different capabilities. He did as Alicia instructed, and found the feline much more controllable. "Whoo-hoo!" Josh triumphantly cried as he made much more restrained turns, even staying on the correct side of the road as the feline trotted. "When we get into the fields, we can really let loose. I wonder how fast she can go? That reminds me, I really should spend some Arena Points on a Double Team TM, given that they're permanent and reusable."

Josh’s exuberant reaction put a smile on Alicia’s face, and she sighed in relief that he was taking the ribbing so well. ”I’m just happy it went over so well. I wasn’t actually sure how well that one would go over.” she replied to him with relaxed ease. ”It gets easier with time…” Crios rumbled softly more to himself than anything else, rolling his eyes at the humans’ antics. ”What was that, Crios?” Alicia asked in concern, leaning over to get a better look at the Onix’s face from her perch. ”Nothing. Nothing for you to worry about at least.” the Onix replied, raising his voice enough to be more clearly heard. ”Just… thinking about something I was told by the others…””Penny for your thoughts?” the hero aspirant continued, now just curious. Her Onix didn’t speak much, so if he was willing to do so right bow she would love a chance to get to know him better. ”Your generous bribe is rejected.” the Onix finished, a small crackling showing just a hint of a smile. Alicia herself chuckled at the choice of words, and let the line of questioning drop at that point. But at the thought of Luna’s top speed… ”Liepard is pretty close to ‘leopard’ so I imagine that’s a good comparison point. But I imagine it’s quite a bit faster than that if Luna red-lines it. Might beat out a regular cheetah…?” Alicia hypothesized, before shrugging. She didn’t know a Liepard’s moveset off the top of her head, but she imagined it learned some kind of Speed Boosting move or priority. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Josh wondered about Luna's top speed, too. There was, of course, only one way to find out: saddle up and hold on tight. It came with its dangers, of course, as the amount of stress it would put on his body if he went beyond what he could handle would almost certainly log him out. There were big cats in captivity easily big enough to ride on in the real world; ligers existed. No one rode even a tamed one; their flexing backs were harsh on a would-be rider's spine.
"It's funny you speak of a cheetah," Josh replied as he continued to get used to how Luna controlled. "I was one of those kids that dreamed of riding a cheetah. Without thinking about how small they were, about their lack of strength... and about how harsh their gaits are." It would make going back to Granmarg or Raiden an adjustment... and would test his skill as a rider. To be able to adapt to multiple types of mounts would be difficult, but rewarding.
"But I'd be down. Want to head to the west gate and try?" Luna loudly ran her motor in approval, startling Josh. "Whoa, that felt so weird! I didn't think about them purring, either!"

”Yup. You’ve mentioned it as much before, which is why I thought about it when hypothesizing.” Alicia commented with a grin. ”I don’t think you’ve realized it, but you have a big tendency to repeat yourself about the things you love the most. Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand it. When something excites you to the core of your very identity, of course you’re going to want to chatter about it to any who’ll listen.”Of course, Luna seemed quite pleased with the discussion going on. Possibly doing the cat preen thing mentally and then decided to display her feeling. Much to Josh’s surprise. Alicia laughed at his reaction. ”Oh boy, I imagine that was like sitting on one of those massage chairs that suddenly got turned on to its maximum setting. But yeah, let’s head out the west gate. Let ‘er rip and all.””Do you expect me to keep up with the feline?” Crios asked with a mote of concern. ”No, but your size will keep him in visual range longer. And I imagine he’ll double back if he gets too far ahead. Happened that way the last time we did this.” Alicia replied. ”He also nearly tore himself apart, figuratively, calling a Quick Attack from Raiden mid-thunderstorm.””That does indicate a lack of forethought…” the Onix mused. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Right, he had mentioned that to Alicia, hadn't he? Maybe his dad was right. Maybe he ran his mouth too much. There was an adage he hated to hear, but one he felt like he heard from the old man every week. "Humans have two ears and one mouth; therefore, they should listen twice as much as they speak." It was agitating, but there was a ring of truth to it.
"No, it felt really cool! I just wasn't expecting it!" Josh raised his hands before heading outside Briarbane's west exit, beyond Mythstar's base. He had pondered joining a guild for quite some time, but was unsure which one he wanted to join in the end. He would need to guild hop, as he had things he wanted to purchase from most of them.
Hearing how pleased Josh was with the sensation, Luna repeated it one more time before crouching, ready to bolt forward at her rider's command. "Hyah!" he cried before squeezing the feline's sides. Breaking out into a run, the feline dashed wide circles around Mythstar's base.
There was no whoop from Josh, for it took a lot of concentration to keep the Liepard under control. Her flexing back bounced Josh more harshly than even Saber, at times feeling like her spine was slamming into his rear with every stride. He wasn't sure how fast the big cat was moving compared to Raiden, but the more pronounced running stroke made it feel faster.
