Deep within the Sea of Grass, where the wind lies still and trainers rarely tread, the grass grows silver.
The stalks are tall, thick, and sturdy, and you would be forgiven for believing that they are grand iron spikes speared into the soil. Whether this metallic grass is the result of magnetism, starlight, or underground leylines is unknown, but it is clear that the place holds unusual powers.
It is said that if you write a heartfelt wish in iron, hang it from a sturdy stalks, and ring a bell of purest silver, that an all-seeing creature will bend the future for you. Not enough to break any grand designs. But enough to make the cards fall a little kinder.

Torino carried her egg everywhere.
The DNA had called to her inside Cygnus's carriage, and afterwards she felt compelled to advance it into a full egg immediately. It was like the stars themselves were egging her on, pushing for this starchild to be born as swiftly as possible.
The stars had infinite patience, of course, but sometimes the pull of gravity would streak one to earth with surprising haste.
"I did not know about this place!" Torino said, as her snow shoes crunched on the silvergrass floor. "The plants are so bright!" She stroked one of the stalks with care, expecting it to be sharp. But no, moonlight had worn the blades smooth, and there was only the slight cold of touching wild metal.
A distant breath of wind set the hanging dreams clattering, and the metal tags set off a windchime chorus of wishes. Torino's heart soared, and she knew she must join them!
The grove had no center. No bowl, altar, or physical 'shrine' sitting and waiting to be worshiped. Every stalk here was important. Torino picked an iron tag from the ground and held it one-handed. "How do I wish?" she asked. There was no pen that would write on the metal. No clear way to make her dreams known.
Torino looked around at the grove and set her stance wide, egg tucked under one arm. "I will be back, Dreamplace!" she said, and strode off into the grassland in search of a pen.

Rose didn't really understand what this place was, but it was very peaceful. She liked how beautiful the grass was, brushing her fingers through the long tall stalks, rolling through them. She was just happy to explore, wandering through the long field of metal grass when she stumbled across this particular place.
Metal tags dangle from some of the stalks, and it seemed just so peaceful.
Rose hummed softly as she glanced around the grove, looking at all the tags. It seemed like people had written or carved wishes within the metal to hang. She could have sworn she'd seem something like this somewhere. A cartoon one of her friends showed her at school? It seemed incredibly familiar, even if she had no idea what they really meant.
But the idea of writing down a wish just seemed like a brilliant idea.
The young girl suddenly flopped down onto the ground, pulling out a large canvas bag from her inventory. It was massive, the canvas covered in a few accidental paint stains that seemed to change every time she pulled it out. Rose liked to call it her Magic Bag, instead of the boring Art Supplies name it had, always pulling out something exciting for when she wanted to make things.
Her first fistful of supplies was a handful of modeling clay, now kind of crumpled in her hand. With a shrug, she set it down to reach in again, now pulling out a few cute stamps with hearts on them.
"Hmmm..." She debated, glancing up at the tags then once again set it aside to keep searching. After a few moments passed, and a multitude of crayons, glue, and macaroni boxes, she finally pulled out a beautifully thin paintbrush, perfect for drawing words.
"Yes!" Rose cried out, grinning ear to ear. She almost stood up to find an empty tag, only to pause and keep digging. She kind of needed paint first to use a paintbrush!

Twang! Twang!Strands of silvergrass hummed like steel strings as Respiro vaulted back onto the path. They shivered back into stasis, muffled by the solid ground. If only the earth were hollow: then the fields would ring and resonate like a great guitar, and Respiro would run (of course!) along its ribcage. He was feeling lonely. He had caught Dodrio out here, once, long ago, when he'd first rebegun his rebeginning. Not long after the players here had granted Thunderfall back to its master, not long since great islands of grass and grit had migrated towards the sky and named themselves the Ruptured Lands. Miquel had been fascinated by them. They didn't exist on his home server. Did this place exist there, he wondered, eyeing the strange blades of grass and thinking of true-blades, slenderblades. Rapier. Spanish steel. Was there something else in its place, if not? Something wild, something wicked? Something cold as forgetting, something deep as last-goodbyes? Patpatpat. Leap! Respiro landed neatly with a whuff of moondust next to Rose Garden. The flowers which usually followed him seemed stifled by the strange soil, but tiny silver seedlings still beaded like liquid mercury in his footprints. Awkwardly, he gestured to the paintbrush in the little girl's hand and pointed up, up at the tags hanging up above. Then he pointed more energetically.Did she want one? He would get one down for her. But there were tags on the ground, too. Were they any different? Fascinated, Respiro scooped one up and skipped backwards, giving the metal slip an experimental swing, then lowered it with a sigh. No good. He hucked it into the field of shining grass instead, where it clattered and chimed and sang like blackbirds, or maybe more like bullets. It was fun to throw things.

Writing is easy. You just need a hard thing and a soft thing to break onto it. Chalk, graphite, or even clay. More advanced writing uses things so soft that they flow like liquid. Paint, ink.
Torino had no paint. She had no ink, either. And as the day wore on she was worried that she wouldn't even find a clay pit or a chunk of usable colored stone. Hell, she was even tempted to use mud at this point!
But then she had a breakthrough.
"Ah! I know!" She ran for the Ruptured Lands. Here, the land had been thrown upwards, with magnetic islands tossed into the air like weightless pancakes. They floated in a series of semi-climbable steps that reached up towards the stars. But Torino had eyes on a low island.
Stura, a tall and proud Onix, appeared beside her. His movements were slow and languid, like the rocks of his body were gently being pushed into new spots by the force of an invisible river. Torino climbed him and jumped onto the lowest island. "Thank you Stura!"
Ahead of her was a dull vein of sparkling rock. Though obscured by streaks of mud and dulled a little by time, what lay beneath the crusted cover still glittered in its depths. Torino pulled away at the debris to unveil the gems beneath. She found a loose chunk and yanked it from its resting place.
In her hands she held a glittering spear of some light-blue gem. It was impossibly hard. The opposite of chalk and ink. "Perfect!" She pulled out the metal tag and scratched the gem against its silver surface, leaving a thin mark. "Yes yes! I do not need paint if I can cut!"

As a person born with a silver spoon in his mouth, many would assume that Arthur didn't need, perhaps did not deserve, any sort of wishes. But life was a series of wants, no matter how much of it was already granted in one way or another. He was not satisfied with life, but to know exactly what he wanted to wish for, well, that was a harder question to answer.
Nonetheless, the place, appearing on the map, drew him in despite the dangers, because he was aiming to unlock some trainer titles, and one of them involved shrines. This didn't look like one of the shrines he was supposed to visit though - if anything, there didn't seem to be any shrine at all. A shrine in the making? But it was discernibly special from its surroundings, because there was a clearly defined line when the stalks of grass were of a different color, like something magical washed over them. Well, it was not just the color, but their stature, and yet they bend slightly to the wind, letting themselves get rattled like bamboo.
Or so the pop up window said. Indeed, when he looked around some more, there were thin iron tags scattered all over. It reminded him of what people in the military wore, not that he had ever been. Much of his knowledge was from media, really. Gou, who had been riding on his shoulder, jumped down and let his feet touch soil. The silver grass, sharp as it looked, was gentle and considerate. Koro, on the other hand, stood too short - the stalks were past his head, but that didn't stop him from hitting his antennae and playing music that he felt fit the mystical scene.
Arthur turned to his Pokemon, ❝Any idea on how to write something on a metal tag?❞
<Perhaps your dragon's claw would be sufficient.> the Kricketot continued to improvise a tune, letting the notes get carried by the wind.
<His claw will cleave the tag.> the Chimchar was trying to scratch a tag he picked up, but his own claws left barely a mark - too light to feel like it was worth much of anything.
❝Yeah, we'll need something smaller. Some kind of mineral pen...❞ he thought of how only diamond was strong enough to cut diamond. Perhaps they didn't need such a precious gemstone, but it had to be harder than whatever this thing was made of. Maybe with his Kindler class, he might be able to handle something heated?
If nothing else, it felt nice to settle here for a while. Maybe someone else would come by, also lured in by the promise of wishes.
squeezing myself in here lol

She wasn’t sure what had drawn her here. A lot of things seemed to happen so quickly nowadays. She just… needed a moment to think. A moment to reassess herself. A moment to just exist.
While she was here though… why not follow up on the rumor? There were plenty of tags still lying around, and she grasped one. Two Pokeballs were tossed in short order, releasing a Growlithe and Onix. ”Rath, Crios… a little help please.”
Both pokemon were quiet, concerned, as Alicia explained what she wanted to do. As others had found out, there were no writing implements. So… she was going to engrave it into the tag. Rath’s Embers were perfect for giving it just enough heat to be a little more flexible, and Crios’ angular horn was perfect to carefully engrave into the temporarily softened metal.
She spent what felt like forever there. Perhaps others would come and go as she worked. Wiling away so many minutes, maybe even a few hours, carefully reheating and molding the iron into fine words.
’Hear please the wish of a lost soul. For all who stray from Home, whether by choice or force, may they find their way to the place they belong. Safeguard them in their time of trial.’
All the while as she worked, Rath and Crios gazed upon her in concern and worry. Things had not been going well in a number of ways. While they only tangentially knew Yggdril and Fumar, they could tell how much it was tearing their trainer up to not have them here.
Alicia had wanted to ‘write’ more. But the tag only had so much room. And even with reduced pain thresholds, her hands had been aching, almost screaming, in pain for the last… how long had it been…? She didn’t know how long she’d worked. Her method of choice was easily the longest and hardest method. But it was also the most direct. It was the one that left her the most satisfied. For iron set in its way did not weather away easily. Certainly it was not eternal, for nothing was.
But it would endure the ages. And with the way she wrote it… she hoped that if someone ever needed help the way she did, they would be able to use the same tag. At least, if that was even possible. Maybe it wasn’t and she wasted her time in that regard.
… It was still worth it to her. That was all that mattered in the end.

Just ‘quickly’ slipping this in.

A stormy moon rumbled its discontent above the shifting steppes.
Far below, carving his way through the grass with his one free arm, was Big Bee. He had an egg held in the crook of his other arm. The shell was speckled, like flecks of foam across a sea of black coffee. "Good night to be out!" he said optimistically.
Bee pulled aside another sheaf of thick stalks, and had to shield his eyes from the captured moonlight. "Ah! What the hell!" The glow of the irongrass was unnatural. On a night with a shadowed moon, nothing in the Steppes glowed as brightly as this little grove.
Slowly, his eyes adjusted to the stolen moonlight. He could feel the glow soaking into his skin, and catching strangely on the shell of his Cosmog egg.
Behind Bee swam an ancient creature, its opal-patched skin gleaming. Odyssey, his Relicanth. "A night of uncommon dark...and portent..." Odyssey said mystically.
Bee's feet caught on fallen metal tags, and he picked one out of the clattering floor. "Wish tags?" he asked, turning one over. It was blank iron on both sides. "Good timing, I've got plenty to wish for." He picked up a second tag and used the sharp edge as a pen to carve a message into the first.
I wish for Cosmog to grow up big and strong!A simple message, sure, but a sentiment echoed often by expectant parents. When in doubt, keep it simple.
Odyssey floated beside him, peering over his shoulder. "What would you wish upon this fresh-faced world?"
"The tag? I want my little guy to grow up strong! Just like Jam did."
"A nameless form, taking shape inside its light-less shell..."
"Are you saying I should name it now? But I don't know if it's a boy or a girl! I guess legendaries are usually genderless...but there's usually a gender vibe, you know?" Bee picked up a third tag, and scratched a message into the second.
I wish I knew what to name Cosmog He hung both tags up on a high irongrass stalk, and watched as their flat, spinning faces caught the glow the moonlight glow.

Torino rushed back to the irongrass grove. She found a stalk with no wishes hanging from it, took out her Jirachi egg, and sat down on the cluttered ground to write her wish. "Should we wish for happiness?" she asked her Jirachi egg. She grinned. "But I am already happy!"
"Maybe we wish for strength! To fight things that are evil and cold!" The Wish rang hollow, as if battle prowess was beyond the realm of what the shrine could grant her.
Torino felt the wrongness in the air, and shook her head to dispel it. She looked to her egg for ideas. "What do you think, little one? What should we wish for?" She leaned in to the egg, cupping her ear against the shell so she could hear its whispers. "Oh! Is that so!" She giggled at the egg's secret wish and, gripping the crystal pen, she carved their shared wishes into the iron tag.
For new friends. For iron. And for a Winter that never comes.

For those that wish upon the stars, a silver bell awaits your hand. And for those that throw wishes away, know that the stars are always watching you.
Once your wish is writ and hung, there is one more step: to ring the silver bell.
It is said that the bell will sing but one note —for that is all you need to call the all-seeing creature— and that once it sings, the bell will lose its voice and flee to the far reaches of the Steppes to hide itself in shame.

As Josh rode across the Surge Steppes, the grass turned from a prairie yellow to a brilliant silver that was almost blinding with every flash of lightning. He reined the wolf to a stop out of fear of the Pokémon cutting himself on what he expected to be sharp blades not unlike theMirrodin setting's razorgrass. Despite their hardness and bladed appearance, the stalks seemed malleable enough to press onward... for a while. The central portion of the field had blades of metallic grass thick enough to etch text onto. A flavor-text popup beckoned Josh to do so:
Josh didn't know what else to wish for, other than one thing. He couldn't wish for anything that would carry over into the real world. Would his wish be granted if it was selfless? What about if it was selfish? Writing was not the challenging part; between Ares and his KINDLER class, he could etch his message upon the blade using the Charmeleon's tail.
He slid down the Manectric's back and clicked open Ares' Poké Ball, surprised to see that the Charmeleon was almost as tall as he was. "Wow, I forgot how big you are, Ares!" Josh smiled. "Maybe I could even go for a ride on you before you evolve!"
"If you're so excited to do so, then saddle up, boy!" the fire-type quipped back. "I won't take any prisoners, though!" Being on a biped, despite the stable tail being enough to support a small rider like Josh, would be a vastly different experience. One he was not apt to experiment with now. They were clearly on holy ground.
"Ares, can I use your tail? I need your heat to etch my wish onto the grass." With a nod, the fire-type extended his tail toward him, Josh not so much as flinching when he grabbed the tail near its burning flame. Maxing the KINDLER class was really coming in handy!
Once the tip of the flame was touching the metallic surface, Josh wrote his heart's greatest, and most selfish, desire upon the tag:
For even gods needed friends.

Rumors really did have an insidious way of spreading around the area—
One such flashed across his screen one day while he was meandering around the Surge Steppes, trying to figure out a way to get his Grookey back.
(As it was, the only clues he had were that the scene of the crime was over at Ostellia, so he would have to investigate there, but the question is, who could he go with?)
He would eventually be drawn to the place as well; seeing that there were several others that had approached as well; drawn by the lure of writing down a wish…
The only problem here was that there was no readily-available writing implements—not even a quick scroll through the in-game store inventories showed such.
“That’s going to be rough,” he muttered to himself once he’d seen several of the wishes that had already been hung up on the—
Wait, wait, hold the fuck up, who wrote that?
He would immediately pop open his menu and send a message to Polaris, asking the Frenchman if he knew of any other players on this server that had also been on the European server, and would close the menu out while he found a slab of metal long enough to write on.
Did the language of the wish matter?
Maybe… if there were any other players who had a language overlay turned on, they would immediately figure out any foreign text.
(Which was hilarious since his own in-game language was set to French, not Italian.)
Quick as a flash, he would summon his own Vulpix, who would look up at him curiously; he was holding the metallic slab and trying to figure out if there were any rocks or stones strong enough to make a dent on the metal.
‘What are you doing?’ an unfamiliar voice would catch his attention, and he would very nearly drop—
“Leanne?” he would quietly ask the Vulpix, who would nod his way.
‘Yes, that’s right. You gave me that name. Can you tell me why?’ the vulpine Pokémon would ask him.
“Well… I named you… after someone determined. Someone I know, outside of here, who is quiet, yet determined not to let life knock them down.”
‘I quite like that. What are you trying to do with that piece of metal?’
“Well… the only way I can think of is to shape the metal, make it malleable enough to write on…”
‘Say less,’ was all the Vulpix would say next; releasing a steady stream of heat from her tails; which he would then hold the metallic slab close to.
This would take a while; however once the piece of metal was workable enough, he would quickly scratch words down—words that only he could understand.
His wish wasn’t for his in-game self, but for his real-life self…
‘What language is that?’ the Vulpix would ask him once the metal had cooled down enough and the words remained etched into the cold surface.
“I’ll… I’ll tell you someday. Just… not now,” he replied quietly, turning away from the Fire-type to hide the fact that his eyes were welling up with tears once again. Why was he cracking open so easily these days…?
‘Are you okay?’
“…yeah. I’m fine,” he would reassure the Fire-type, as he walked forward—the vulpine following after him as he found a place to hang his slab of metal from.
It may be just a wish, but it was an unfulfilled one… the weight of which still bothered him, even to this day.
well that took a really sad turn

Torino was silent.
Quiet, she told herself, as she padding along the canyon floor. In her arms she clutched her iron egg, the almost-sphere heavy enough to keep her feet firmly planted.
Around her the boom and shudder of trapped lightning echoed through the crags of Thunder Canyon. Resonant sounds from all across the Steppes were caught and held by this canyon, doomed to echo through its walls and inner chambers for all eternity. It was a crass, clashing place filled with shearing steel and the sounds of ancient battle.
But perhaps it was home to gentler sounds too.
Torino kept both ears keen, listening for the sounds of a distant bell, but all she heard were heavier, space-filling sounds. The scrape of stone on stone, the screech of a massive Thunderbird, the firing of titanic lasers and the rush of floodwaters washing along the thirsty Steppes.
She crept, her footsteps as quiet as falling petals, through the rubble at the base of the canyon. Her shoe-less feet found soft purchase among boulders, and trod lightly across the scree of discarded pebbles and iron clatterings.
There were predators in this canyon. Things that fed on sound. Creatures as hungry for intrusive noise as they were fastidious about hiding in it.
CRACK
Torino froze. Was that her? Nothing felt broken.
She looked down at her feet. No sticks or glass or anything breakable. Just plain old rocks—
CRA-CRACK!
A dark, hair-thick break zigzagged across the outside of Torino's egg.
"No!" she cried, and suddenly the whole world was looking at her.
She was prey, and predators were closing in from every side. She felt them come in the wind and the patter of rain and the dust that rose from her frantic footsteps.
They were on here heels.

Seconds after letting go of Ares' tail, Josh could have sworn he felt a handle appear in his hand, just like the prophecy read. In the real world, such a coincidence would be something he would dismiss as a folk tale. In a game like UNOVR, though, these foretold texts had weight. Meaning. Maybe they really could make their wishes come true. As if by subconscious compulsion, Josh reached for Luna's Poké Ball and embraced the big cat. The feline reciprocated that affection with a vibrant purr that made the scout's hair stand on end. "Let's go." Hoisting himself into the saddle, Josh gently reined the feline deeper into the Steppes, keeping Alicia Westfield 's advice in mind.
Ares sat in Saber's saddle, the three Pokémon scouring the Dragon's Maw in search of the silver bell. Were it not for the electric wolf's capacity to be a biological lightning rod, all three of them would have been fried. Even the aggressive, brave Charmeleon's skin tingled after the near misses that his Manectric steed absorbed.
On a cliffside near the edge of the Dragon's Maw, a monochrome panorama filling the void beyond, was a familiar face. One Josh wasn't expecting to see on his hunt.
ARAVAN ESCHER, his RIVAL.
"Look who it is," the oceanographer deadpanned as he reached for one of two SILVER BELLS near him. Clearly still distraught by their last meeting, Josh had an idea what his rival's wish would be. "I knew you wanted to be shorter, but you've got to be the smallest character on UNOVR. You... look like a comic book character in that getup."
"I never got to say it after our battle. I'm so sorry for your loss; had I known you weren't carrying any more Pokémon, I would have called the match then and there," Josh sympathized. "If you're here to battle with me, I refuse to do it here. We can square off in the Arena, where there's no danger to white out."
"The sentiment is... sweet, but that's not going to bring Enigma back from the Everworld," Aravan sobbed as he held the bright and valuable instrument in his hand. That was all Josh needed to know; he just wanted his Nihilego back. Little did he know that his rival had been to the Everworld once already, and failed Seta's trial. "But the all-seeing creature can. And that's my only hope to get them back."
Not wanting to accelerate the acoustic savant's spiral of negative emotions further, Josh withdrew Ares and offered his rival a seat on his Manectric. "Come on. Let's head back to the Sea of Grass before it gets any worse." The big cat and dog, trainer and rival in tow, ferried both of them back, Josh returning to where he hung his wish. His rival's silver blade from which his own wish had been hung was not far.
"O Great One, hallowed be thy name. I wish no more than to be made thine holy Knight of Thunder. Make me thine loyal servant; a herald of your eternal, everlasting kingdom whose reign endures for ever and ever, Amen."
"O Beast of the Sea, hallowed be thy name. I wish for the safe return of Enigma. Deliver the Nihilego from the trials of the Everworld. For their safe passage, I repent..."
Almost in sync with one another, their silver bells sounded identical loud, clear notes. Those notes were far from ones a bell would be expected to make. The bells sounded replicas of their own voices. No. The bells used their bearers' voices to power their own.. as if they spoke through their bearers to the all-seeing creature itself.

Torino spotted a gap in the chasm wall. The vast, shaking bank of rock was split here, creating a thin fissure that fed into darkness. She pressed herself inside, egg in hand, and wished for silence.
The world held its breath. Her cut feet trickled red pixels into the dirt. Her breath screamed in her lungs. Her heart boomed like thunder.
Was this it? Was she prey now? She held the egg tight, her soft hands holding the cracking pieces of shell in place. Not here, little one. Not in this terrible place. Not where they might find us.
A pack of sleek and silent things passed by the mouth of the fissure.
Torino watched them move through the silence that shadowed the claps of thunder. She breathed out through her nose, the noise whistling slightly in the cramped space.
And then she heard the bell. The ringing of something pure and clear, like a crystal comet singing to the stars. It was glorious and glassy, and yet resonated at a tone she'd never heard of. An imaginary flat or mythic sharp. A triple sharp, or maybe J flat.
She padded into the darkness, red footprints marking her passage back to light and crashing sound. The sound didn't sell, but it resonated deeper in her bones, making them ring like tuning forks.
Something told her this was the pure tone. The fled voice of the bell. Something powerful and yet deeply shy. One wrong move or loud noise and—
CRACK
A chunk of her eggshell split, and the sound fled in surprise, diving right into the gap between the plates and lodging itself deep in the egg.
