Manish wouldn’t say that he was worried, no, he was fairly certain that Buyna could take care of herself just fine. But, well, no one had heard from her since the panicked call she sent out. Against his better judgment he decided to go looking for her. From what he could see on the call, she was probably somewhere near the coast so he started his search there.
<Manish, I don’t know about this> Ryan called, trailing behind his trainer.
Manish could only shrug. “Yeah, me neither. But uh, well, what if Bunya is, ya know, in trouble? I mean, I’m sure not. But like, we should check, right?”
<You don’t even like her that much!>
“Hey, um, well, I mean, it’s not that I don’t like her! Not liking someone and being, uh, well, terrified of them are, you know, two different things. Did you see how upset she got at me when I brought those birds? And that gross cat. Litten. Yeah that thing. I can’t believe I ended up with two of those, both of which tried to kill me! They're dangerous.” Manish dug his bare feet into the sand. The few mushrooms that did sprout around him instantly were battered by the wind and sunk back down into the ground.
<Manish, hate cats later, focus on finding the cat lady! Wait. Manish, you do realize she’s a cat lady, right?>
Manish froze, before his shoulders dropped and he continued on. “Well, it's just that, I mean. Um. Look, a healthy fear of cats is a good thing. They are the deadliest predator and I don’t really want to give Bunya any other reason to be uh, you know, um, mad at me?”

As Manish trails down the beach, battered by winds and blowing surf, he hears it again.
I am coming.
It is faint, as if from a great distance. Anyone else would only hear the strange murmurings of wind and waves, the whims of weather.
A tempest approaches.
If Manish is able to focus in the face of the storm, he may see a white labcoat flapping from the top of a distant palm tree, waving like a welcome banner.

In his worst nightmares come true, Manish heard the voice again. “I am coming.” Manish panicked and immediately tripped on the wet sand and landed with a slap. <You okay?> Ryan asked as he waddled up next to him. After taking a moment to spit sand out of his mouth, Manish stared sadly at the approaching storm. “Hey Ryan? Um, so, like, this probably isn’t my fault. Like, okay, it might be. But uh, I mean, I don’t really know what I did? But I think I uh, I might have, well, I might have done something to the shrine? And now I hear a creepy voice telling me that it’s, uh, that’s it’s coming.” <What’s coming?>“I don’t know!” Manish flailed before pushing himself up and waving dramatically towards the storm. “I would just say the storm, but storms don’t, you know, normally talk!” Mid frantic gesture Manish caught a glimpse of a white coat. He squinted his eyes before taking off in a run towards the figure, Ryan trailing behind him. “Hey! Hey uh, miss? Er, um, hey Bunya! Is it okay if I just call you Bunya? I don’t, um, anyway, what are you doing, you know, um, here? You should leave? Please?” He came to a panting stop next to the palm tree and took a moment to lean over and regain his breath. He made quite a sight covered in sand, mushrooms and hair waving in the wind, untucked tie flapping about. “What are you doing in a tree? Isn’t that, um, dangerous?” |

Bunya is clinging to the palm tree for dear life, less like a motivational cat poster and more like a terrified girl on a rollercoaster. Her eyes are bloodshot from blowing sand and salt.
"NO! I'm nyot leaving!"
Her legs are wrapped pretzel-style around the trunk of the tree, and she ducks her head to avoid a flapping palm frond. Beneath her labcoat, you can see she is soaked and shivering.
"Cuz I'm stuck! NYEEEH! Call the fire brigade!"

Manish circled the tree a few times before stopping underneath Bunya. “Oh geeze, okay, no that’s uh, that’s okay! I’ll catch you!”
<You’ll do what?> Ryan said in mild horror next to Manish.
It was then that Manish realized what he had said. “Oh, I mean, I probably won’t, ‘cause I don’t think that, well, that probably wouldn’t uh, work. Um. Ryan! I meant Ryan will catch you! He has uh, vines? And stuff?” Manish took a second before nodding to himself. “Yeah! Yeah that could actually uh, work! Ryan can grab you down with his vines!”
Ryan’s vines snaked out from under his flower and up towards Bunya. They gently wrapped around her, ready to take her weight. “All you gotta do is, uh, well, let go of the tree? Please?”

Yoinking on Bunya proves quite effective. Lacking actual claws, her cold-numbed limbs and slippery lab coat provide neither friction nor resistance as Ryan plucks her down from the tree with his vines. Bunya immediately goes limp, arms and legs held out at stiff angles like a kitten being picked up by its scruff.
She keels over in the sand as Ryan sets her down, flopping over on her side. Rain continues to pelt down from above and she flips her lab coat over her head to cover it. You can hear her teeth chattering from beneath it. "I cyaan't move..." you hear from beneath the sheet, muffled, "Too... hungry..."
Her eyes close dramatically, then one pops open to regard manish. "Didya get my video message? Shit's crazy, nyeah?"

Manish frowned down at the literal wet cat for a moment before crouching down next to her and gently patting her shoulder. “Um. Okay, uh, there there? I don’t, uh, I don’t know if I have. Um. Food? I mean, uh, what do you eat? ‘Cause like, I know that uh there’s the joke that you eat pokemon? But that’s just a joke. Right? Can you eat pokemon?” The entire time Manish was rambling he kept patting his hand on Bunya’s shoulder.
“I think I have a uh, Magikarp? If you want that? Wait, no, is that wrong? Is giving you a Magikarp with the express idea of it being food ethically, uh, wrong?” Manish froze as he started to think about it. “Oh my geeze is that what it’s like for animals in the real world? They are just given to people for food? Oh my geeze. Oh. Oh geeze.” Manish started to feel sick to his stomach. “I think I just became vegetarian…”
<Manish, focus up.> Ryan whispered as he poked Manish with one of his vines.
“Huh?” He looked back down at Bunya. “Oh right! Okay. Um. Well, look. You can have the Magikarp if you want, but also I really would rather you didn’t or I think I might actually start to cry. Um. What else do I have? I have, uh…” Manish looked around him before getting what was probably a bad idea. “I have mushrooms! I could make you mushroom stew probably!” Manish said with the confidence of someone who had actually cooked something before in their life.

"Huh? Maybe you cyaan't." Bunya seems unbothered by Manish's questions about the ethics of eating Pokemon. Her voice comes again, muffled from her hiding place beneath her lab coat. "Your teeth aren't shyarp enough."
Notably, Bunya has only responded to Manish's dialogue. She does not interact with Ryan in the slightest despite the Venusaur's helpful presence. It's as if she can't hear him at all.
When given the choice between a captive Magikarp and Manish's home-grown, home-cooked mushroom stew, Bunya doesn't hesitate.
"Myagikarp please!" she pipes up, sticking her head out of the lab coat. "Nya-ha, don't worry. They're not smart or nyanything. Just kinda boney!"
...However, even when relinquished, the NPC seems unable to affect the gray-scaled fish directly. Manish may watch in horror and befuddlement as he sees Bunya's eager teeth meet an invisible barrier around the Pokemon. "Nyeehh? What's this thing made of, platinyam?"
She takes it out of her mouth and studies it beneath her rain-soaked monocle. "Oh, gotcha!" she says after a moment, then pulls a Pokeball out of her pocket. "I gotta battle it first!"

“Oh. You really are going to. Oh. Yep. You’re uh going to try to eat it. Oh geeze. Oh no…” Manish mumbled in horror as Bunya took the Magikarp and tried to munch on it. He wasn’t sure if he was going to throw up or cry. Probably both. When she couldn’t eat it he thought he was going to be safe, or that the Magikarp should at least be safe. But he should have known better. “You want to? Wait. What? You want to fight? Oh. Oh geeze. Um. Well, I don’t, uh, I’ve never fought with. Uh. Oh geeze.” Well now what was he supposed to do? He was already not really on board with letting her eat the Magikarp, now he had to fight with the fish and then lose so she could eat it? Or win and then Bunya would be sad and hungry? He really wasn’t going to win this regardless. The only thing he could do at this point was fight and let things play out. Was it a cowards way out of making a decision? Probably. But he wasn’t ready to actually make this kind of decision. “Uh, do I uh, do I go first? Okay, yeah, no I’ve done this um, I’ve done this before. Okay. Yeah. I guess I’ll just. Uh. Attack? Right? Okay, yeah, doing that. Um,” he quickly looked down at his UI and pulled up Magikarp’s moves. For as many fish as he’s fought, he never really paid attention to what they could do. “Okay. Um. Use uh, Tackle?” Magikarp did it’s best to jump up and try to hit the flying Aerodactyl. MAGIKARP used TACKLE on AERODACTYL C6hcVLzO1-20 Magikarp: 90/1001-20

Manish's Magikarp has no chance against Bunya's expertly unequipped Level 1 Aerodactyl (her specialty is resurrecting fossils, not training them to any respectable degree).
As it jumped, it banged into the rock-type's belly with a wet smack, like hitting a brick wall with a fish.
<NERGHHHHH!> Aerodactyl roared, upset. Bunya wiped the rainwater from her monocle and put her hands on her hips, laughing triumphantly as the gale-force winds blew her lab coat dramatically around her.
"Heh! Aerodactyl, Nyairon Head!"
The winged dinosaur flew down with its dome shining chrome, ready to bonk the Magikarp into a crater in the sands.
