Keleth's cotton-candy mane shimmered in the morning sun cast over a ranch long abandoned. The wide open spaces seemingly beckoned Josh, and possibly Will , to saddle up and let loose. "I bet this once was a pretty big farm," the young and short scout said to his companion as he brought out two of his other Pokémon, a Zebstrika and a positively enormous Growlithe. The striped, orange dog stood even taller than Josh, a message generated by the HUGE SEAL proclaiming just how much larger the fire-type was than most of his kind.
Little did the duo know what sinister secrets the derelict farm had for them to uncover...

Despite his time playing, William was still unfamiliar with most areas and mechanics of the game. He'd not even left or fully explored the first area of the game; he preferred sitting in the little towns drinking imaginary tea and making small talk with the NPCs who ran the place. He struggled to go out and talk to people in the real world but somehow knowing that in Unovr the people he talked to were just strings of, incredibly impressive, code made him less anxious about the interactions. He kept telling himself it was to "get himself used to being social again" but deep down Will knew he was just replacing real human interaction with the game.
As the yellow leaves crunched underneath the older man's shoes in the most satisfying way, William continued wandering in silence with his furret and snivy following behind. He was finally starting to get comfortable with the beings, though he admittedly couldn't even consider enabling the thing that allowed players to talk to the creatures; it would be too strange for him. Ahead, down the path he walked was a seemingly abandoned building. It wasn't really the type of place William would usually explore, but before he could consider turning around and finding some other place to wander to, he spotted some Pokemon and... a child? With slight confusion he approached, calling out a simple "Hello," to the other player as he got closer.

The lad before Josh didn't recognize him, the scout at first puzzled. "Will!" he called out to him. "It's been a while - how you been?" The saddled fire-type barked toward him in greeting. The new seals in the Arena Shop had to be crazy for those unfamiliar with them; for a Growlithe to grow so big that it could be ridden prior to evolving was something else.
As clouds began to roll in from the west, the most astute observers would be able to see a scant few wisps of corruption floating downward from the farm's abandoned residence's uppermost window. The scout, oblivious to its presence, cuddled with his Growlithe before sitting in the saddle. "These two are Raiden and Braver," he introduced the Zebstrika and Growlithe. "I don't think you've met either of them before."

To William's surprise, the child's words indicated that the pair had met before. Puzzled, the older man tilted his head in a clear sign of confusion. He had met someone called Josh very briefly at the arena from what he could remember, but the person had been far older than this child. It did not occur to him that given that this was a game, a player could customize their looks at any point and even alter things like gender presentation or age when doing so. After all, he'd made an almost identical version of himself in the game because "playing as" anyone else would have felt alienating.
"I'm sorry, have we met before?" he finally asked, doing his best to sound polite. He did not want the child to think of him as rude, he'd much rather be seen as a forgetful old man. Shifting from one foot to the other, he couldn't help but be anxious about seeing such a young boy on top of a large canine like that. There wasn't even anyone supervising?
"I don't mean to be overbearing, but are you sure that's safe?" as he spoke, William motioned at the canine the boy had introduced as Braver. It didn't take a genius to figure out that he was worried for the boy's safety.

"Right..." The last time they had met, he appeared much older than he did now. "It's Josh. We met in an Arena battle once. I know I look a lot different than I did before. I went to the Identity Parlor in Briarbane and got a new look. So I'm not surprised you didn't recognize me."
The remark was understandable; the Growlithe Josh was sitting on was huge. Such a big dog could get to some incredible speeds, and a fall would almost certainly hurt, even on softer ground like damp grass. "I've been riding Pokémon enough to have picked up a lot of tricks. I'll be fine!" he insisted, Braver barking once as an indicator of his consent. "Riding a Pokémon is a really convenient way to get around UNOVR, especially when you can't fast travel."
The wisps of corruption cascaded down from the attic's broken window, Josh still oblivious. Were he or Will to turn around, though, they would notice something clearly wrong. Hair-raisingly wrong...

It was as if a light bulb went off on top of William's head as the recognition set in, though it was quickly replaced with only further confusion. He'd not gotten the image that Josh was a child, young perhaps but certainly not a child. Perhaps it was a fatherly instinct left over from when he'd still had a daughter to worry about to feel a slight unease of witnessing someone present themselves as younger in the game than potentially being in real life.
"May I ask why you would choose to look like a child, assuming you're not one yourself?" William found himself asking, unable to bite back his curiosity.
As for the other player riding the abnormally large canine, William supposed he was unfit to worry about it too much, especially if Josh already had experience in doing so. "I can't say I've as much as considered it myself. The closest thing to any riding I've ever done was holding the reins of a pony as my daughter sat on the saddle," he admitted with a chuckle, oblivious to anything off in the environment.
Josh Devlin I'm sorry I'm not really interacting with the corruption, other than reading the guidebook section on it I don't know much about it or what you're planning with it ^^"

The confusion seemed to only grow as Josh explained what happened in Briarbane that afternoon. The boy scout would try to clear up as much of it as he could. "It sounds childish, but I did it to make myself small enough to hop onto smaller Pokémon!" As if to prove his point, he clicked open a third Poké Ball, this one containing a Liepard that wore a saddle covering most of its back. "My older and taller self never would have been big enough to hop on one of these." It may have looked strange to Will, seeing a saddled feline. With how much their backs flexed, riding one had to be a real challenge. "And no, when you first met me... that's pretty close to what I look like on the outside world." Perhaps it would calm Will down some to realize that he wasn't the only self-insert on the server.
Josh couldn't help but chuckle at Will's perception of Josh having been a riding expert in the real world, too. "I had zero experience with any riding animal before--"
All of a sudden, the wisps grew in number, forming a shadowy horror that stabbed through Luna before retracting. "Look out!" Josh cried, diving out of the way of the snake-shaped silhouette whose forked tongue seemed to be what pierced the feline. With a music change, the two had found themselves thrust into an unexpected boss battle.
Combat Log> Luna has turned against the party!
"Stand back! I'll protect you!" Josh tried to assure Will as he invoked his abilities as a PLAYER to enter combat himself. With the speed of a Growlithe at his beck and call, as well as some very basic magic, he could fight just as well as one of his team members!

William felt almost guilty for allowing his mind to think about the worst things when it turned out the other player had simply chosen the form because it was more convenient from a gameplay perspective. That certainly made a lot more sense and explained why the option to play as a child might have been implemented in the game, to begin with, other than being there for the children playing the game of course. Now that he thought about it, he had no idea about the age rating of the game; he'd never bothered to look it up as he'd assumed all Pokemon games were child-friendly like that had been in the past. "That does make a lot of sense now that you mention it, I would have never even thought of that myself," he admitted with a light, warm laugh, "still, it must feel at least a little strange to go from your adult self to a kid who has to look up at other players whenever you log in."
About to talk further about the topic, William was genuinely startled at the appearance of some shadowy monster that would have been more at home in a horror movie set in space than in a Pokemon game. The sight caused him to stumble backwards; before he fell down he suddenly found himself in the real world.
Player Will has logged out. The sudden shift was almost more startling than the game as he faced with his coworker holding his Nintendo WorldScreen in his arms with a sheepish look on his face. To his absolute horror, William realised he'd invited the younger man over for coffee today.
"The door was unlocked and you weren't answering so I just walked in. Didn't take you for a gamer Mr.Gray."
Rather embarrassed by the whole thing, William ushered the man to the kitchen to sit down while he made them some coffee and defrosted some baked goods he always made sure to stay stocked up on for surprise visits kinda like this. As he settled for a long evening of just talking, William couldn't help but wonder what had come of the other player since he'd logged off so suddenly. He'd have to send them a message tomorrow and apologize for leaving them so suddenly.

All of a sudden, Will had logged out without warning, leaving Josh all along against the CORRUPTED threat. Josh came out to the barn because he thought it would be a leisurely place to get his Growlithe fully trained for use as a steed. Little did he know that as soon as the game marked Braver as ride-trained, he would be engaging in mounted combat against a horror he had never seen the likes of.
"Now let us begin," echoed a demonic voice whose source was the Corruption coalescing into the form of a giant fly that was easily three times his size. "I hope you don't die too easily."
Upon targeting the Corrupted foe, all Josh got back in his UI were question marks. Backing out of the menu, he spent his all-important first turn reaching out to a friend for help. Sending Alicia Westfield a direct message, he entered it as quickly as he could while his mount breathed EMBERS upon the hideous being in front of them.
DIRECT MESSAGE> Sorry to bug you, but I'm in serious trouble. I'm outside the Tainted Barnyard and have been ambushed by a Corrupted threat that's way out of my league. The encounter's inescapable, too. I need a hand, now, or I'm probably on a one-way trip to the Everworld. Bring Fairy-type attacks if you can -- that's my gut feeling what it's weak to.

With the urgency in the message, Alicia didn’t waste time with a composed reply. Tikani was immediately brought out and she jumped into the saddle. ”Ride the lightning! Full Force!””Right, but what happened!?” Tikani replied, building her electricity. ”Josh is in trouble right now!” the Gardener replied. Nodding grimly at that, Tikani angled her self and surged. Her paws hammered the earth like a stampede as she pushed her speed to the limit. The scenery flew by in blurs as the Bayleef weaved. The enormous fly bearing down on Josh wouldn’t have the chance to launch its own assault before the streak of purple lightning tore past both of them. Thunder boomed in their wake, as Alicia skidded into along the earth, her figure smoking as she tossed a Pokeball out. ”Pearl! Dazzling Gleam!””What in Arceus’ name is that!?” the pastel pony yelped out as she appeared. But all the same she channeled her strength. Her mane and tail glowed bright, as she drowned the area in as brilliant a radiance as she could, With such an all-range attack, there wouldn’t be much way for the fly-monster to even attempt to mitigate the damage. ”What were you even doing poking around in this area anyways!?” Alicia yelled out in concern and minor admonishment. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Even more suddenly than the Corrupted horror bore down upon him, Tikani and Pearl came to the rescue, the latter loosing a DAZZLING GLEAM that made their foe shriek and raise his proboscis almost straight up in pain. "The rats multiply..." a disembodied voice echoed all around both Josh and Alicia. With the foe reeling, Josh took the initiative to collect lightning in his hand and thrust it forward in a cast of ZIO. The electric bolts harmlessly bounced off.
"Good to know it's got at least one weakness..." Josh trailed off. Sadly, Keleth would be doing little damage to the shadow, what with the Galarian Ponyta being a Support. "The worst part is Know Your Enemy is going to be useless against a foe that is immune to electricity. I'll do everything I can to keep us up, and you take the spotlight."
They would have little time to discuss further, as a wide blast of electricity would race toward the Bolter and Gardener in the form of MAZIONGA - a mighty attack, indeed. As all four of his limbs were overcome by muscle spasms, Josh realized he needed to upgrade his Player class as fast as he could if he wanted to be on the battlefield for himself. Was buying into the class so early a mistake?

Alicia grimaced as she saw Josh’s Zio wash over the giant bug with nary a scratch. Thinking fast, and with her hands moving faster, she swiftly navigated through UI menus. NOTICE> Tome of the Fae Purchased! -400 Bytes! She doubted anyone else would dare to try something like that mid fight. But after seeing Zac bulk spend a ton of Bytes out of thin air for Chanda Mama’s Steel Chef competition, she figured it was possible. It wasn’t a purchase she wanted to make, and she was definitely going to try and sell it back later if the game let her. But for this? They needed every edge they could get. It was just in time for them to be hammered by the replying electrical strike. Alicia hissed in pain as the lightning lanced through her. And this was only a moderate level attack!? It reminded her of another series, where the hero’s mage friend had mistaken the villain’s basic fire spell for a max tier one because of the sheer difference in mastery and available power. ”The problem with Know Your Enemy here is I don’t think we can share a type with that thing! You can’t know what you can’t study! Pearl, another Gleam, aim for both me and the bug! Tikani, give us a buffer!””O-Oh! Um, alright!” Pearl chirped in concern, preparing the next Dazzling Gleam. ”Light Screens, coming up!” Tikani hollered back, focusing her psionic power into a defensive buff. Given the system Josh appeared to be working under, it would be equivalent to a Rakukaja on the allied party. Either way, it would be a nice reprieve and, as long as it was up, it would make the Corruption Monster’s next attack easier to endure. That gave the Galarian Ponyta an opening to unleash another Dazzling Gleam, forcing the beast to reel back from the blow. Alicia, meanwhile, rapidly thumbed through the tome she speed-purchased, and held her hand out. A pink magic circle formed between her and the rays heading her way, letting her refract the rays into a staff that she could claim for herself. With a twirl, she set herself into position. A buff appeared on her status for Josh to see, if he chose to spend the moment to look for it. FAE GRACE> PHYS attacks gain the LIGHT attribute when beneficial. PHYS attacks hit an additional 2-3 times. While it was translated into the particular system he was operating under, the connection was clear. Alicia was leveling her purchase and her Pokemon’s rarity boost to improve her own abilities temporarily. ”HAAA!” With a short warcry on her lips, Alicia charged the fly beast fearlessly, letting lose with a short flurry of blows that each nailed the beast’s weakness with bursts of blinding radiance. Of course, she had to pull back just as quickly to avoid getting hammered by one of those massive limbs. Still… she couldn’t shake something on her mind. ”… I got a bad feeling about this. Instinct of a gamer, you know. Surely you’re feeling it too?”This was not going to go their way, she meant. Even though she was pulling out what stops she could. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

To spend precious actions on making mid-battle purchases was daring, but it had worked; she had pulled out all the stops and hammered the Corrupted foe's weakness. "My only fairy-type Pokémon is a support, so I'll be reliant on you for damage!" Josh relayed, grateful for the defensive buff from Tikani. His own Galarian Ponyta, Keleth, would glow with a DAZZLING GLEAM of his own, not to harm the fly-beast, but to make Pearl's more powerful.
"Pesky plant," the Corrupted being barked, shaking its head after the barrage of Fairy-type attacks. "Wilt!"
ZANDYNE in the form of a destructive tornado whirled around Tikani, its winds threatening to slice her foliage as efficiently as a samurai's sword. With the source of the LIGHT SCREEN fading, the cosmic insect-horror turned toward Alicia directly, raking down her body with sickening force. Josh gulped upon seeing the colossal amount of damage the physical attack inflicted. "I would ask if you're okay, but I know you're not," Josh half-groaned. "I, too, have a bad feeling about this. Like we're both not long for this world."
And with Luna looking ready to turn against Josh, it only looked like things would get worse...!

Tikani let out a scream as the third tier attack tore into her mercilessly. While the Bayleef wasn’t out of the fight yet, it was a near thing. Low health sirens were definitely going off for her, and rapidly. Really, it was only the Light Screen from before that kept her on her feet. Alicia endured the insect beast’s attack with less fanfare, sliding back from the agonizing physical blow. It hurt. It absolutely hurt. But she was getting sick of these corruption creatures and Ultra Beasts constantly getting the better of her. Sector Jarzick, Midas Corp, and now this fly monster!? ”Josh… save a spot for me next time you go after this thing. And if I go first, I’m doing the same for you.” Alicia growled out, a bit of temper showing. ”Pearl, try to patch Tikani up. Any chance you can give a Solar Beam in time?””I’ll try.” Tikani mused as she focused. The sunlight that could reach them was beginning to coalesce on her leaves. It wouldn’t be enough, unfortunately. But that’s all there was for it. They had to do as much damage as they could to see where this creature would go with its next move. Something like this had to have multiple phases that kept getting nastier. ”What about you!?” Pearl screamed out in fright. But she followed her orders all the same, aiming a Heal Pulse towards Tikani. ”You’re hurt too!””…” Alicia couldn’t bring herself to answer. Instead she let out a roar of defiance, aiming to strike with all her remaining strength. Her efforts were rewarded as hers and Josh’s vision flashed twice in her flurry. Critical Hits certainly added to the damage, making up for Pearl focusing on healing in this exchange. She’d almost forgotten about the feline that had also been out. But with a glance, she noticed Luna looking almost feral. ”I assume you can’t recall her?” Alicia asked with a grimace. She didn’t want to turn any attacks upon one of Josh’s own Pokemon in this situation. But if she was ensorcelled by the enemy, Alicia didn’t really see much alternate choice. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Condition: Fair Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Condition: Fair

Combat Log> Luna turned against the party!
Still under the strange amalgamation's control, the giant, saddled cat pounced all over Josh and his Growlithe, incessantly tickling them and subjecting them to TORMENT. The volume of their hysterical laughter had been reduced by a cutscene whose camera shifted to Alicia Westfield and her foe.
"That was a good warm-up. My subjects are getting restless, so let's start the real battle. Feel my wrath, fools!!"
Raising its disgusting proboscis above its head, a blue light shined outward from it, enveloping Josh, Alicia, and all of their Pokémon. As it touched them, the sound of shattering glass would echo from around each.
Combat Log> All stat increases have been negated!
That was when Josh knew for certain that both he and Alicia were way out of their league. "He can wipe buffs..." the rider trailed off. That would be the least of their worries as the blue light surrounding their foe turned red, a small shockwave blowing around the hair and fur of everyone present. Any muscles the horror had visible bulged in ways that looked physically impossible.
Combat Log> The enemy is focusing for a powerful attack!
Josh tilted his head back in frustration. "Lovely, he's got phases. And I think we pushed him to his next one before we could get ready..." The boy's precious fire-type HOWLED loudly to try to raise morale, little else they could do to rebuild and contribute.
Combat Log> Physical attacks improved!
