He knew that some of the kids (what? They really were in the truest sense since he was like what, thirty-three?!) had bailed when they’d arrived at the very end of the Midas Corp building… the one that played like Temple Run, but only with a much more terrifying clause.
What he’d called Josh over for today was going to be a few things:
1. Discuss what happened in the immediate aftermath of Midas Corp 2. Ask about Alicia Westfield’s errant behavior as of late if he’d noticed anything 3. Make plans on how to get their missing Pokémon back (even if he knows that this may be futile, you can’t blame a man for fucking trying)
He’d found a nice little roadside café that sold all-day breakfast, and was already there stewing; waiting for the younger man to show up.
He’d already placed an order for a tall vanilla milkshake and was waiting for the platter of waffles and chicken (honestly, these strange food combinations) to be brought out—where was he, anyway?

What Alkaid would see would not be a younger man walking into the restaurant; he would see a young boy, and a short one at that. That he comfortably fit on the back of a Liepard showed just how short he was. "Hey, Alkaid !" the blonde greeted him in a higher-pitched voice than the redhead was perhaps used to. He took a seat at the table, finding its height uncomfortable for him.
For as many benefits as there were to being small, there were just as many drawbacks.
When the waitress came back with his friend's drink, Josh ordered his, too. "Can I get a medium vanilla milkshake, as well?" he asked. "And would it be possible for you to bring a bar stool here? This chair's a hit too short for me."

What was taking the waffles and chicken so long to come out—
He heard a familiar voice, however the body it came from definitely did not register right away in his head. He could fucking swear the last time he saw this young man he was much taller…
“The fuck happened to you?!” he would exclaim; never mind if he’d almost spat out the long sip of vanilla milkshake he’d taken prior to speaking up.
It now felt like he was literally speaking to a little kid, in the truest sense of the word.
He would then lean in as close as socially allowed.
“Did Midas traumatize you so much you turned into a kid? Were you cursed or something?” he would ask the other in a lower voice.
For some reason, he felt the back of his right hand twitch at that. Never mind if said hand was roughly wrapped in bandages for now; at least the bandages weren’t soaked wet with blood yet…

The voice may have been familiar, but it was at a higher pitch than Alkaid was perhaps used to. As the redhead loudly cursed, one of the waiters approached him and quietly addressed the outburst. "Excuse me, sir, but we do ask that you lower your voice. We do have children present." It took everything Josh had to avoid laughing; being a child meant that adults had to mind their manners around him. It also meant that he probably shouldn't curse, either; it would be strange hearing expletives come out of a child's mouth.
"I went to the Identity Parlor in Briarbane," Josh explained. "It's the only place in UNOVR I've seen where you can change your avatar. With me being a Pokémon rider, I felt it would be a good idea to make myself as small as possible. I set the height slider all the way to the left... and I mean all the way." Even for a child, he was tiny; at just barely under four feet tall, he would have approached world records for shortest human being of his age. "So no, Midas had nothing to do with this. I did this on my own terms."

He would only raise his eyebrows at the wait staff that came over, and give this tiny little huff before turning his attention back to the… now… damn it, it really felt like he was talking with a kid now, huh?!
Now I feel like a predator, were the thoughts that rose unbidden to the forefront of his mind before realizing that there was something else that was bothering him.
“You… you don’t have the option to make little cosmetic alterations available on your character screen when you log in?” he would ask the other, blinking as he took in—the eye-watering sight of his travel companion, who now looked…
“Holy shit, you look like an eleven year-old with that model,” he added a few moments later.
There, he said it. He finally said it.
“How do you even deal with being that small now?” he went on once the chicken and waffles had finally been delivered. Okay, time to see what was so ‘delectable’ about this absolutely strange food combination.
After a few bites of the waffle (which was fantastic, but nothing as fantastic as the ones down at that hawker stall near his workplace in the real world), he would then get to the point of the entire meeting.
“Have. Have you noticed anything strange, or off-putting about Alicia Westfield lately?”

The child shook his head and closed his eyes. "Nope. Only at character creation. And if I want to change it again, I'll have to show them an even bigger wallet." He wasn't planning on changing his avatar like that again, but if he did, it would come with a 4,000 BYTE grind. With that kind of money, he might as well just rush to endgame.
"There's a lot of benefits to being small, too!" the blonde chimed back. "You ever seen anyone ride a Liepard before? They're fast!" Luna was one slippery cat to handle, but when they were in sync, there was little they couldn't escape from. "There's also crawling around in spaces I couldn't fit in when I was bigger. I already ran into one in a dungeon in Birchwood. Might go back there and explore the rest of it now that I'm small!"
As Alkaid 's meal arrived, Josh had realized he had completely forgotten to order food. "I'm sorry, but can I also put in an order? Let's go... two scrambled eggs and a waffle." With the bar stool brought to his table, Josh climbed up it and sat on it. Now he could see the redhead clearly. "Thanks!"
After the waiter left, the topic turned to something more somber and serious. "I have. She's gone through... really hard times of late. And not just once. Do you remember that trick her Bayleef pulled in the big race?"

Huh. He wondered if the version of the game the… the literal kid had was slightly different from his; because for some reason he could still access adding cosmetic alterations—or maybe that came with the territory of him piling on tattoos and ticking that option to make changes to them even after the character creation screen was done?
“You know, I now feel like a babysitter next to you,” he would crack; realizing that quite literally, in all the truest sense of everything—he was talking to a literal kid.
(Who knew how old the other player was in real life?!)
“There is also, the very real danger of you getting stuck in those aforementioned tiny spaces, you know,” he would lightly warn the other. “Who knows what’s going to happen to you if you do get stuck and there’s nobody—not even your own Pokémon—to get you out of that sticky situation.”
Once he was done shredding the ‘chicken’ down and folding it in between the waffles, the topic of the conversation would take a turn for the serious.
“How can you tell? I was mostly in the back of the pack for the majority of the race. You know. Invasive species and all that,” he would remind the other.

It was not long before Josh's milkshake arrived, and it was a cold one. The taste made Josh smile, reminding him of the shakes he got every time he want to Beef-a-Roo, a local fast food chain in the area. They weren't cheap, but they were high quality. Plus, he loved keeping money local, not supporting some billionaire shill's international business.
"Just treat me as you always have," Josh tried to express his maturity to the redhead despite his apparent age. "I may have the body of a child, but I possess the mind of an adult. You know how many old folk wish they could be kids again with what they knew now?"
The blonde sighed, taking another big drink out of his shake before recounting his story. "Ever since she and her Bayleef returned from the Everworld, she's got the spirit of a Miraidon in her. She can drift like one. It makes me jealous how fast they can go. But it's not worth the trauma. That might be why she... went berserk at Midas Corp."

The moment the other mentioned the reason why he’d noticed something was off about Alicia Westfield, his own eyebrows went up.
“Wait, what? How can a Grass-type…” he would trail off. This definitely fell in the ‘does not compute’ territory; how could a decidedly Grass-type pick up a move that completely contradicted its own species? The Everworld?
…truth be told, he himself had not yet been to the Everworld—even on his first server. He’d definitely heard about the stories from most everyone else in his former guild, though.
About how a trip through the strange place would change not just themselves, but one of their Pokémon companions as well.
(Maybe it was because of this healthy sense of danger that their guild was better off supporting the larger, more offense-oriented ones. But that was an entire world away…)
“Speaking of which. Since you and the greenette left before we got to the end of… the end of that accursed place, something. Something happened. There were not just one, but… if I recall correctly, two pinkettes who made a grab for the tome.”
The look on his face turned grave.
“I tried to get Alicia away from the damned thing but she. She punched me. She fucking gut punched me!” he would growl, stabbing at one of his waffles with a little more force than was necessary.
“See, when the strange tome was opened… something. There was something inside of it.”
The reveal… that would come later.

Such violent behavior was unlike Alicia. Josh had known her as a sweet, if a bit timid, individual. Had MIDAS CORP really changed her that much? "Come to think of it... ever since then, I've noticed she'd been a lot more... brave than she used to. Willing to throw herself into danger more."
Was the ledger he had acquired from MIDAS CORP part of that tome? Josh had known that there was a sinister power emerging from it. He would have gotten rid of it if he could, but he seemingly could not remove it from his inventory; the "drop" command in his item submenu had been greyed out with every attempt. Was what Alkaid knew about that tome inside his, as well?
"What was in it?" the curious child asked, turning quiet as he saw his main course was on the way.

He could see the wait staff approaching their table with his companion’s food, so he chose not to speak about it; at least until the other had settled in with their food (and probably had eaten a few bites or so, just to be safe).
“Well. I can tell you, but. You might lose your appetite if I told you right now. Or are you alright with me telling you the rest of the story while you’re eating?” he would ask the other quietly; looking around and making sure that there was nobody else listening in.
Shit was about to go down and it was going to be very serious, all things considered.

As Josh feast eyes on his food, he spread the thinnest film of ketchup upon his eggs and a layer of strawberry jam upon his waffle. "If it's that bad, it might be best to hold off until I'm done," the blonde answered. He wanted to enjoy his food, not hurl it back up his throat in public.
"In the meantime, what else happened in the immediate aftermath?" he asked the redhead. "I really didn't want to stick around." Who would want to? Ultra Beasts were no joke; with the care he raised Izoni with, he wondered if he would be able to communicate with her like the rest of his Pokémon... and also the day he would be able to fly with the sticky poison-type. He would only have one shot at affixing a saddle to such a creature -- better make it count!
"Do you blame me, though? I do have a sense of self-preservation. Sometimes it might not seem that way, especially if [tangent=320 km/h for the ill-familiar with Imperial]two hundred miles an hour[/tangent] is involved," he couldn't help but shoot the other a grin.

He was about to hold his silence when the (literal) kid contradicted himself.
“Okay, you say one thing and want another,” he teased. “You want me to wait until you’re done eating, but less than ten seconds later you want to know what happened after you and the greenette left?”
A teasing smirk crossed his face for a few moments.
He also did not miss the crack on metric units.
“You just literally got the fuck out of range as fast as humanly possible without even sticking around to find out what waited at the end.”
He would stab at the waffle once more, rolling it up with the shredded chicken as filler before taking a bite out of it.

Josh accelerated the pace at which he ate his food while he was listening to Alkaid 's story, since it would clearly leave a sour taste in his mouth from his friend's description. "I'm just trying to carry on a conversation is all," he jabbed back as he downed a piece of egg. That ketchup, spread thin as butter, was the perfect addition.
"And do you blame me?" Josh retorted, remembering the horrors within the dilapidated skyscraper. "Both my Pokémon are gone. I didn't want to log in and find myself in some... Invasive Species jail for weeks on end. I bought the game to... you know, play the game." He wondered how his two horse Pokémon were doing.
Once Josh was done with most of his eggs, he gave the approval for the hot-headed Kindler to continue. "Alright, go ahead," he gestured with his right hand before picking up his fork and attempting to finish his waffle before the account got too gruesome...

tw: slight gore / blood / light cosmic horror (mostly for ‘kaid though) The crack on ‘invasive species jail’ wasn’t missed.
“Look, better that jail than logging into a game that’s mostly unplayable,” he would crack back, waving the stabbed piece of waffle on his fork before finishing off the rest of the dish he’d ordered.
Once he was satisfied that the other was reasonably done with their food, he would grab his milkshake and lean back on his chair, tilting it upwards so he was balanced on the chair’s rear legs.
After he’d taken a sip of the milkshake, he would unstick his throat.
“Alright, so. After you and the greenette bailed, there was just me, and two pinkettes. Alicia being one of them. Since most everyone fled at that point, it was just us three, I think, that was facing the open safe. There was a something on the desk not too far from where the safe had been smashed open.”
He would then wring his free hand before slamming the chair back on all four legs.
“Both the pinkettes tried to make a grab for the thing on the desk. I could already tell that Alicia was… deranged. Like, possessed of some kind of revenge air, or anger. Not guilt. I tried to stop her from grabbing it.”
He really hoped the other could handle what was going to happen next.
“I made to grab her away from the thing, but…”
At this point he was already unwinding the roughly-wrapped bandage on his right hand; before showing the other the injury that refused to heal no matter how hard he tried to staunch or cauterize the wound.
“…something in that book, I think, or a tome—couldn’t tell—dripped out and lashed at me. And ever since, this injury hasn’t fully healed.”
Should the other have the ‘realistic’ pain settings cranked up, for a few seconds it looked like the flesh on the back of his right hand bubbled, before drops of dark crimson liquid welled from the injury.
“Cazzo, sorry,” he would apologize as he grabbed the tissues on the table and dabbed at the blood that welled up.
