All the while, Arthur was reminded that even if these lands were floating through the power of game logic, his body didn't have that same luxury. The method he had thought of so far was reminiscent of Snakes and Ladders, only Stura was acting as both a snake and a ladder. He would return the Onix back to his Poke Ball before sending him out in an island that seemed reachable if the rock snake outstretched his body like a makeshift bridge. He marveled at how the Pokemon handled his body, with each stone surely weighing plenty, but they moved and shifted without issue, forming solid ground to walk on, so long as his feet did not slip on the smooth stone.

They climbed up the islands slowly, this way. Sometimes Arthur did not judge the distance correctly and he had to point the Poke Ball a certain angle to return Stura. Sometimes the Onix took a while to settle into a position that ensured he would not fall over. The islands themselves were not all that stable, and there was a time when the weight made it sink. Not all the way down, mind, but enough that they had to consider another spot to tread.

If this were another kind of game, Arthur might've had a field day with the plants that grew here. There was not much variation, but there were plenty and vibrant, and some of them glowed. When taking breaks from all of the climbing (he was not a climber, and his hands were actually getting sore and scuffed. He took many breaks), he would look at the plants and admire them, wondering if any of them were special enough to give him some kind of in-game reward. Unfortunately, the HUD was silent, and he only saw scenery and stone. In the distance was a different kind of rumbling and hyperactive lightning. One crashed into the natural lightning rods a few kilometers away. It made him jump when electricity collided with metal. From afar, someone might've thought of it was dazzling, but he could only think of him being thankful that he was nowhere near.

The Onix was a quiet worrier, eyeing the trainer and muttering to be careful whenever he hooked his fingers on his mineral skin. There was no real goal on high he wanted to go, though. There simply just came a point where the islands were too far to reach, and that was the end of their climb. If Arthur dared to peer over the edge of the floating island, he would see the ground, but far, far down. He would surely die if he fell from this height.

He took a deep breath. ❝Okay. God, am I really doing this?❞ he wanted to rub his eyes but his hands were dusty and dirty. Gritting his teeth, he positioned himself two feet away from the edge and made sure that he was looking forward, not down, not up.

The Onix looked at the trainer quizzically. <That's all?>

Arthur glared at the Pokemon behind him. ❝I don't need commentary.❞ it was precisely why he had none of his other Pokemon out. He let his voice travel to some parts of the Surge Steppes before checking his UI to see if that registered. Sure enough, there was some progress made there. Great! He just had to do it again, but the words lumped in his throat, and it sat on his tongue a little too long.
