Arthur wanted to fish.
No, he had never fished in real life before. Okay, maybe once as a kid. Maybe a few times, but those were in tourist attractions, nothing gritty or habituous, nothing like a dad taking a son to a fishing trip. But he did like fishing in games, and almost all games had some kind of fishing minigame nowadays. Pokemon definitely had one, so it made sense that UNOVR had one too, so when he had spare BYTES that was exactly the amount he needed to buy a fishing rod, well...
He justified it as easy practice for Kanya without having to go back to Beta Island, because after the canopy fire fiasco, he was pretty sure that the NPCs were going to give him stink eyes for days. Weeks maybe. Eventually, if reason required, he would go back because of the abundance of rare Pokemon there, but he saw no need at the moment. He had the fish. He had the rod.
And the beauty of a fishing minigame meant that he didn't have to wait so long before he got a bite on the line.
The trainer took a seat on a foldable chair he got from the game as well as a roasted black bubble tea drink slotted on the cup holder. It felt like a luxury not to worry about gaining weight drinking this while still able to taste it and feel the texture of the tapioca pearls in his mouth. He just had to put all of the weirdness of this being a VR and him actually not eating anything in real life aside.
Koro-sensei was playing a quiter tune somewhere further away, but not far enough that he couldn't see him. The Kricketot could scare away the fish, after all. Gou and Kanya, on the other hand, were doing some sparring, and the fight was definitely much more lighthearted now that the Sprigatito was under his ownership. There was a lot of taunting from the cat (ironic considering that the monkey was the one with the actual move), shouting on which of them had the stronger and longer Scratch. The Chimchar, not wanting to rely on type advantages, was solely focusing on physical moves, practicing when to dodge and when to counter.
❝Can you quiet down, Kanya? You'll scare the fish.❞ even if this was a game, the wait times between fishing spawns still took some time.
Kanya meowed in slight annoyance. <It's not as fun if we're just hitting each other!> the lapse in focus meant that Gou was able to land a non-fatal slap on the cat's cheek. Still, he shrieked and stumbled on the landing.
<It's also hard to get a pleasant afternoon nap.> Rou grumbled under her breath, raising her head slightly from Arthur's lap.<< Party >>
