Seta didn't seem to be in possession of Reynir or Nymris, which was about the only relief she experienced in the Everworld's depressing red and gold halls. Shalin's depressed-looking eyes shifted toward a Nihilego; it seemed even Invasive Species were not immune to being whisked here. Her eyes began to fill with tears as she recognized one of the masks.
It was the face of Rumble, her Onix.
At her low level, it was one of the few PokƩmon she could ride upon, and she longed to sit upon his tail. It was the fun kind of chaos Beta Testers like herself lived for. As she wandered the Everworld's halls, it became clear that UNOVR's equivalent of hell was the most well-built world in the known game space. Every glitch she had tried to abuse didn't function as she intended.
Had everything she knew about been patched out specifically here?
The girl approached the faceless, black-robed caretaker of the Everworld. "Seta, caretaker of the Game-Overed, Rumble's life was taken from me too soon. An Onix important to me, he gave his life protecting me in Ostellia when I... searched the wrong area to recover Reynir and Nymris from their abduction by Invasive Species. That he protected me despite my mistake shows how much he cared. He... didn't deserve to have his life taken from him like that."
It wasn't the Onix's fault that he wound up here. It was Shalin's. She came to Ostellia without the information on where her quarry was, and without the levels to survive on her own. "No more solo trips into Ostellia until I'm stronger. Whether by experience, by a more diverse team... I just want Rumble to have a second chance. But it's not what I want. You can even ask Rumble yourself. He'll say the same thing. I'm sure of it. Both of us just want to see my lost Ponyta and Pheromosa again..."

"It is not always strength that is the deciding factor," says the figure. Their sightless gaze regards you thoughtfully. "Though knowing your limits is a valuable skill."
They turn, and the grayness moves down the hall. They lead you to a door-shaped hole in the wall, Not a door, because that would require a barrier of some sort. Wood, a hinge. This is more like a taut black curtain strung up in a rectangular piece.
"Your spirit is nearby," Seta says, standing next to the opening, ushering you through.
You pass through the darkness. It's as brief as blinking, and you find yourself in a new world.

Shalin had expected to appear in a hellscape of untold horrors, demons, Corrupted PokƩmon to battle, and the like. Instead, she was in the center of a landscape resembling Glen Oak Park, the largest park in her home town. It more than resembled the large recreational facility... except it was completely devoid of visitors other than herself. "What's... a place like this doing here? And where did all my... PokƩmon go?" she asked herself, scanning her surroundings for them. Not one of them was anywhere close.
As she wandered the corner near the children's museum, where she had spawned, she found a curious red gate marked with a purple triangle-shaped sign. Not far from it, a purple gate marked with a blue, diamond-shaped sign. Right next door to it, blue gate with a yellow, star-shaped sign. What did it all mean?
Doing some quick math, that meant there were a total of... one hundred twenty-five gates on the park's property, and only one of them would lead her out of the trial. To brute force the solution would involve staying in the Everworld for over five days straight. "Guess I'm disappearing from UNOVR for five days," Shalin sighed as she pulled up the menu, utilizing muscle memory to navigate to the desired option as quickly as possible. She flinched upon hearing an unexpected dummy buzzer, a red message popping up at the top of her UI:
Error> Cannot log out while an Everworld trial is in progress.
There really was no waiting this Trial out in the real world, was there?

Even if Shalin could keep herself occupied all day, and sleep all night waiting for all the incorrect gates to disappear, waiting out this trial all the way simply was not an option. If she did, she would be ripped away from her WorldScreen in a stretcher once her neighbors caught wind of the horrific stench that would come from not taking care of herself properly.
For a trial of patience, she sure was on a time crunch, in a sick and twisted way.
As Shalin wandered about near the museum, she heard a strange sound akin to lashing vines. Peeking around a corner, she saw Saria incessantly cracking them toward what she could only imagine was an imaginary foe. "Saria!" she yipped, giving the Ivysaur a hug. "I'm so happy to -- wait, what happened to your colors?! They're all messed up!" It certainly looked strange to see blue leaves and vines growing out of a yellow bulb, the grass-type looking more like a poison dart frog in her now-purple skin.
The two circled around the museum, finding even more gates. There seemed to be five colors involved: red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Three of the colors represented on her PokƩmon. One of the gates she had passed around the museum had a purple, star-shaped symbol, and the gate itself was yellow. Giving it a try, she opened it and stepped through it. Her vision faded to white for several seconds before finding herself outside the museum again, hearing the sounds of her Ivysaur lashing at an invisible foe. Only her colors were completely different this time, and all the gates had totally different symbols to them. "Wait, now you're blue, green, and red?" she gasped.
it seemed she would only get one guess, and if she was wrong, the entire puzzle would reset with a brand new configuration...

The park was massive; without a ride PokƩmon, it would take a long time to go from the north end to the south end. She was familiar with the downtown recreational area, having been to the zoo on the north end several times. Its paved roads were completely devoid of traffic; it was eerie. In the real world, this place would be busy as long as the sun was up, from spring to fall... but especially in the summer, when kids were off school. She was fortunate to find one of her PokƩmon easily, but where could the rest be?
Wandering west to the playground, there were all kinds of wooden structures there for children to play around on. There was an entire obstacle course with a Mayan theme to it, a number of slides, several sand pits, and the like. From a distance, it looked like a native fortress, filled with arrow slits children could imagine firing bows out of.
As she wandered the wooden fortress in search of her PokƩmon, she saw a colored gate nearby shimmer. Staring at it, she saw its metal was blue, labeled with a green square. Had she and Saria already been wandering the park an entire hour? It sure didn't seem like it, with how urgent her search was for her PokƩmon. "So blue gate, green square is wrong," she said to herself, sending herself a direct message so she wouldn't forget. With how messed up her Ivysaur's colors were, that could be important information.
She continued to wander the playground, finding even more gates. Her astute mind noticed patterns starting to repeat. Among the metallic gates, there were five colors: red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. On each one was a colored symbol in the same spectrum as the gates, and that symbol was one of five shapes: a triangle, a square, a diamond, a circle, or a star.
The whole park was beginning to feel like a giant escape room that spanned dozens of acres.
Taking a turn for the lagoon, the glitch hunter could have sworn she heard a familiar buzzing sound over its waters. Squinting, it was too familiar. It was Flit, her Yanma! Whistling for the insect, she convinced him to turn around and land next to her. "Flit! It's you! But your colors are all messed up, too!" Instead of his head being green, it was as red as the rest of his body normally was. The head and body had swapped colors, now a lime green, and his wingtips were a bright purple. Just what was going on? Why were the colors messed up?
Sitting down on one of the swings, she opened up a drawing tool and made herself a table to write down all her clues, including the disappearing gate she had seen thus far. With how long it was taking her to find the solution, she may as well only have one shot at it. Otherwise, she would have to back out of the Trial and lose Rumble forever!

Putting the tables together took quite a bit of time, Flit buzzing near her as she was trying to compile all her clues into one place. Even with copying and pasting, it still took quite a bit of time to even get the framework together, let alone fill in everything to have a view of the big picture. "Flit, do you mind landing near me? I'm sorry, but your buzzing is making it hard for me to concentrate." The dejected insect understood why her trainer would feel that way. The spotlight was not on the discolored Yanma; it was on her and the massive effort it would take for her to recover her Onix. She also drew a very rough map of the park, recording the locations of gates she had seen nearby. Unfortunately for her, she had already forgotten the gates near the museum.
Retracing her steps back to the museum, she took detailed notes of every gate's location. One thing she began to notice between her first try and her second is that the gates didn't change locations; they merely changes attributes. This early on, was it worth trying another gate and likely being wrong, if only to gain more information about how the whole Trial worked?
No.
She still didn't have enough information... and the best way to get more information was to patiently scout. Whether for her PokƩmon or for more gate locations, she needed something. Remembering more of the park's layout, there was a zoo north of the museum. Walking past it, she saw all kinds of cages and exhibits for exotic animals from around the globe... but they were all empty.
Except for one.
As she passed the African lions' enclosure, passing many other gates along the way, she heard a familiar, cute-sounding roar. Turning her head toward it, she found another of her PokƩmon. "Kiara! You're here, too!" she called out to the discolored Litleo with a big smile, the cub desperately clawing at the bars of her enclosure. "It's okay! I'll get you out of here." With careful aim, she withdrew the Kalosian fire-type through the enclosure, immediately bringing her back out on the other side. The Litleo sprung into Shalin's arms, knocking her over. "Hey, Kiara, not so rough!"
There was no reaction to the lion's strange colors: green ears, yellow mane sticking out of the top of her hear, and purple fur where her normal browns were. The locations of her PokƩmon got her thinking. She started near her Ivysaur, presumably because it was her first PokƩmon. She had located Flit at the lagoon, the closest the park had to a wetland, where the dragonfly PokƩmon was well-known for making its habitat. Kiara was inside of an enclosure designed to replicate an African savannah.
Were they all in their natural habitats?
With the pieces of the puzzle coming together, Shalin asked her Litleo to let her stand. The cub climbed down from her chest, letting her sit up and take note of her partner's colors. As she finished taking her notes, she tried to recall all the major features of the park back in the real world. "What else is there..." she said to herself, hoping it would help her brainstorm. "There's the Luthy Conservatory... there's Glen Oak Amphitheater... there's the pet cemetery on the far north... the statue park to the southeast... I guess I'll start with those four." She had an idea where her Vibrava and Espeon would be hiding, but her Buzzwole was a complete mystery.
Where would such an alien creature hide?

Rather than fret over where Olivia could be hiding, Shalin went for the PokƩmon she thought she had an idea they were at. The conservatory was a good place to search; it was full of exotic, possibly desert plants that a Vibrava would feed on, right?
Her smile grew as she could have sworn she heard a distant buzzing noise in the conservatory's general direction. Having heard the Vibrava buzz her wings before, she and her Litleo picked up the pace, cutting across the grass and through the parking lot to the east. Passing by many gates in the lot, she took note of their locations before entering the central building. The lobby was eerily empty, none but tattered coats hanging from the coat rack and an unattended cash register at its front desk, its drawer wide open and empty. "It's just as empty as the rest..." Shalin trailed off, her skin tingling. Even her Litleo was starting to grow increasingly on edge.
Making her way back to the conservatory proper, Shalin immediately felt the humidity levels rise. "Sandy?!" she shouted, trying to get the attention of her Vibrava. "Sandy?!" she shouted again as she rounded a series of palm trees without response. "Sandy, where are you?!" she cried once again, looking past a thicket of ice cream banana trees, their blue bananas quite the delicacy (and quite expensive). As she rounded another corner, she began to sweat profusely, watching moisture bead down some orange trees.
There was no way her Vibrava could have been here; the ground-type dragon greatly disliked humid environments. Retreating out the door and heading outside, she peered into the glass windows surrounding the other two buildings. There were colored gates inside the conservatory, too. Just how widespread were these things?!
"Where did that buzzing noise come from, if it's not here?" she asked herself, concluding that the Luthy was a tropical conservatory. Just before she turned away, she saw another gate begin to glow inside the building. Sprinting inside, she was barely able to catch its disappearance. "So a red gate with a red star isn't the answer, either," she observed aloud, crossing that space out on her digital sheet.
When she left, Shalin could no longer hear the buzzing noise. Two hours had passed, and she had only found half her team. Not like taking this long was a bad thing; the longer she took while still remaining productive, the more gates would vanish, and the closer she would be to returning to the surface world with Rumble. Due to the size of the cemetery and its remote location, she decided to save that for last. She had her doubts one of the PokƩmon would be at the outdoor theatre, but being thorough there wouldn't take long. Perhaps one of her PokƩmon had found an audience to perform for in this otherwise desolate park!

Indeed, one of her PokƩmon was performing on the stage, but not in front of an audience... until Shalin stepped within the radius of the Espeon's CONFUSION. Between pangs of her headache, she heard the sound of a cheering crowd... and even saw one when she mustered the strength to open her squinting eyes amidst the twisted dimensions. Her cute CHARM had captivated her illusory onlookers for as long as she could hold her psychic field. "Starr! Starr!" Shalin called out, the field dissipating from the concentration-breaking cries. The psychic-type bounded toward her trainer and tackled her to the ground, excited to see her in the vast, empty park. "What were you doing up there? I could have sworn I heard... people..."
"It got so lonely here that I... made my own fake crowd to entertain," the Espeon answered. "I'm glad to see you and the others. Any leads on Olivia and Sandy?"
"None," the glitch hunter sighed as Kiara bopped the Espeon playfully. Blinking, she saw that Starr's colors were different, as well. Her gem and ears were blue, and her body was green, much like a Shiny Espeon would be. Used to it from her other PokƩmon, she suspected her missing Vibrava and Buzzwole would likely have different palettes, too.
"I saw something curious on the stage. Come take a look at this," Starr added, pointing her tail toward some graffiti painted on the back side of the shell. While it contained no legible words, a strange pattern caught Shalin's attention: four grey circles in a horizontal orientation, with a purple star to the right of them. The same shape as one of the shapes on the gate.
Shalin added the order and shape of the markings to the bottom of her notes. "Another element of this giant puzzle... what does this all mean?" she pondered aloud, unaware of how much time had passed since the trial had started.
For it only dawned on her now that the sun had been completely still in the sky.

Within the eerie representation of Glen Oak Park, time itself seemed to be partially halted. The only reference Shalin had of how much time had passed was seeing a nearby gate disappear. "Where have you been so far?" Starr asked.
"Let's see..." the Beta Tester replied, checking her notes. "The museum, the playground, the lagoon, the amphitheater, the greenhouse, and the zoo. I've covered a lot of ground already, and two of my PokƩmon are still out there." There was still quite a bit remaining, and with little idea how long she had been in the park, she was beginning to grow concerned for her real-world self. The gates seemed to disappear at regular intervals, but it was impossible to measure how long that interval was accurately.
With the other unexplored parts of the park so remote, there was only one location that made sense for Shalin to check next. "Let's go to the statue park." With a nod, Starr followed her. The girl's legs were beginning to grow sore from all the walking, making her realize just how dependent she was on Rumble for distance travel. She couldn't screw this up, or she would never see her precious, rattling Onix again.
In the middle of her trip, a shrill noise directed her attention to a gate near the park's southeast parking lot. Turning her head toward it, she saw the blue diamond adorning the red gate disappear. "So red gate, blue diamond is also wrong..." As she walked alongside the Espeon, she crossed off that combination from her grid. That was three gates gone. "That's also... the second red gate that's been wrong. What do you think that could mean?"
"When we know more, I'm sure it'll help you put it all together." Starr was right. Shalin had to remain patient and not put together too many what-if scenarios until she had the entire story.
As the duo arrived at the statue park, Shalin stopped at a life-size statue of a man on a pedestal. While there were no identifying marks other than "INGERSOLL" embossed on its base, beneath it was another set of colored graffiti. This one featured a green diamond with two grey circles on each side of it.
"Is this... an order?" the girl pondered, Starr's forked tail gently swaying back and forth as the breeze shifted direction. "The positions and colors... I wonder what else is hidden here." Before she could get too much farther, Shalin had a sudden urge to use the restroom... and they were not close.

While it wasn't pretty, the ladies' room seemed to be fully functional. There were working faucets, hand dryers, and several stalls. Awkwardly walking so that she wouldn't miss (for it had been quite a trip across the park), she swing the door open with a creak. A loud, squeaky buzzing sound scared her, causing her to soil herself before she could take a seat. It wasn't the buzzing of any ordinary PokƩmon; it was far too shrill to be any PokƩmon except Olivia. Was this the noise she had heard earlier? The sound of a sharp object pecking against the door was a giveaway. Only one PokƩmon species could buzz with such a high pitch and had such a sharp natural weapon.
It was Olivia, her Buzzwole.
"Olivia, is that you?" she asked, the Buzzwole responding by slamming her fist into the ground and nearly sending Shalin flying into the side of the stall from the earthquake-like impact. Olivia, too, was discolored. While her head was the proper red shade, her proboscis and the rest of her body were both a brilliant yellow.
Now that she had one of her precious ride PokƩmon back, she could cover the park's grounds a lot faster. Even with a mount, scouring the cemetery would take a long time. The pickleball courts were nearby and would take very little time to scour. Guiding her unusual steed forward, she circled the courts twice, only to come up empty handed. If she was saving the cemetery for last, that left one location, and it made her raise her hand to her forehead.
"I... I never actually went inside the museum, did I..."

Once Olivia had finished skittering toward the museum entrance, Shalin slid down from the wing and onto her own two feet. Withdrawing the Buzzwole and thrusting the sliding door to one side, she entered the playhouse, filled with art, history, and science-related activities for children. There was a play city-scape, a small sand pit full of plastic replicas of small aquatic PokƩmon, a workbench where one could construct tracks for toy vehicles, and even a life-sized cow statue that could be "milked". All throughout the museum's interior were even more colored gates.
Shalin played with some of the exhibits, including a door filled with gears; it seemed intended to teach children about gear coefficients and the math behind how different-sized gears worked. "I remember this from when I was six," she mused as she spun some of them, sticking the crank onto the largest one and watching the smallest one become a blur when she turned it.
Wandering to the back, where a prehistoric exhibit was set up, there were solid plastic statues of dinosaur PokƩmon intended for children to sit on. Tyrantrum, Aurorus, and Aerodactyl were among them, a thick, metal spring attached to the bottom of the flying-type to give a child the illusion of flight. "Cute..." she cooed, climbing onto the Aerodactyl and closing her eyes, imagining she was soaring through the skies on the back of the prehistoric predator. Her daydream would be quickly interrupted by the shrill noise and bright light of the gate directly in front of her disappearing, this one red and adorned with a green square.
As she slid down from the Aerodactyl replica, she noticed something odd about its left wing. On top of it was graffiti similar to what she had located before. This one featured a blue circle in the fourth slot. "Is the color order that of the rainbow?" she wondered, noticing the three graffiti-shapes she had found so far were a green diamond, a blue circle, and a purple star.
Another clue to the mystery, and yet, her Vibrava eluded her. On top of that, where was Rumble, her Onix? She had been everywhere but the cemetery. Was that where Rumble was... buried underground from being "dead"? There had been a rhyme or reason to her other PokƩmon's locations. Departing the museum, she and her Buzzwole took off toward the vast cemetery, this time on the Ultra Beast's backpack saddle. "I don't know how helpful or unhelpful that last gate was," she hummed. "It shares two traits with an earlier one... what does it all mean?"

Dejected, Shalin had exhausted all other possible locations in Glen Oak Park. The only other place to look was the gigantic cemetery covering the park's north end. And it was going to take a long time to search, even with the added speed of a Buzzwole mount.
As she passed by the gravestones, she noticed something unusual about them. Instead of having the names of real-world people on them, they had the names of PokƩmon etched in stone. Big Bee 's GUZZLORD. Tuesday 's CRYOGONAL. Yggy Br00ks 's DEWOTT. Laguna 's CETODDLE. There was one missing, and that was Rumble, her ONIX.
Riding all the way to the back of the graveyard, Shalin happened upon a spire-shaped gravestone that appeared to be painted red. Its shape was unusual, composed of a spire that was taller than she was. It looked narrow and sharp, too. Etched toward the bottom of the stone was humbling text that weighed upon her heavily:
RUMBLE THE ONIX >> JUNE 17, 2024 - AUGUST 17, 2024
Two months. That was all the time she got to spend with the male rock snake. Sliding down from Olivia's seat, the trainer hugged the red, spire-like stone and shed tears. "Your life was far too short, Rumble..." she trailed off, not knowing what else to say. Folding her hands in prayer, she meditated for the safe passage of the Onix to UNOVR's equivalent of eternal paradise.
The moment the tears touched the spire, an earthquake-like rumble knocked Olivia off her feet. The ground beneath her rapidly rose well above UNOVR's height limit, Shalin's skin tingling as she felt and heard something roaring beneath her.
That roar was Rumble, her Onix.
"Rumble! You're okay!!" her tears turned from sorrow to joy, ecstatic to see her long lost partner.
"How long have I waited to see your face again," Rumble answered in a low, cracked voice that badly startled her trainer and made her instinctively squeeze his head spike more tightly.
"You can talk?!"
"Of course I can. Just like any other PokƩmon." The Onix had never spoken to Shalin before this. Was it their traumatic separation that activated the rock-type's PokƩSpeech for the first time? "I am the key to our escape," Rumble continued. "Study me closely."
As Shalin turned around, she noticed carvings on the opposite side of Rumble's head spire. They were a sequence of shapes matching the ones on the gate:
ā² ā ā¦ ā ā
Furthermore, the Onix's colors were, like the rest of her PokƩmon, not their natural gray. Each segment was a different color than the previous. The first neck segment was yellow; the next, green; the third, blue; the fourth, purple. That pattern repeated itself all the way down to the end of the tail. "Rumble, these colors and shapes... what do they mean?" she asked, confused.
"I... can't tell you. For Seta's Trial to be successful, you have to figure it out on your own. Think about everything you've done. Once you have what you need, you'll know which gate leads both of us out... and back into the outer world. Take all the time you need. If you need a fresh state of mind, I'll do what I can to help."
A fresh state of mind. Maybe that's all she needed...

Seta's Trial was like a challenging coding contract. When she was stumped on a solution, one thing she had learned to do was to put the contract away and do something completely different. Using her mastery as a Beta Tester, Shalin relocated Rumble's mounting position from the yellow rock behind his head to the blue rock on his opposite end -- the largest segment located right next to the tip of the tail. "The energy of a Beta Tester truly is boundless, isn't it..." the noble snake mused as he felt the saddle materialize upon not just his tail, but directly on his rattle. The part of his body responsible for creating many of his seismic attacks.
"Are you sure you're feeling well enough?" the concerned Onix asked, worried the two would simply trade places in the Everworld.
"You were the one that suggested a fresh state of mind, and this was the idea I had to get there! Now, once we're out of this graveyard, let's go! ROCK POLISH!"
The giant snake heaved a sigh. "If you say so... Shalin, hold on tight." Smoothing his edges, the slithering PokƩmon rapidly accelerated, the Beta Tester giggling and whooping the whole time as her PokƩmon's tail swished back and forth. If she had even the most remote sense of time, it was gone, the girl energized by her own adrenaline.
Once they were out of the cemetery and into the open space east of the zoo, Shalin had Rumble kick it up another notch. "Now, raise your tail and rattle it!" The Onix closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief before doing as commanded, his last few tail segments shaking fast enough to blur. The loud noise was somewhere between a rumble and a hiss, the upper half and lower half of her avatar disjointed from one another visually.
And she loved every moment of it.
By the time she was done circling the east half of the park, she caught the light of another gate disappearing. Sliding off the tail, she immediately fell prone, too disoriented to stand. Peering toward the glowing gate, it was green in color, adorned with a bright yellow circle in its center. Had she entertained herself that long?
Time sure flew when she was having fun.
But the time for fun and games was over. She had been to every major landmark in the park, and yet one PokƩmon was missing. Every one of her PokƩmon she had met so far was in a location related to its habitat. Saria was her starter, so it followed that she would be her starter in the Trial, too. Flit was at the lagoon, the closest the park had to a wetland. Kiara had been at the zoo, caged inside a savannah-like enclosure. Starr was performing at the theater: an urban environment. Olivia, being alien, was in the restroom: a place completely artificial. And Rumble, her "dead" Onix, was exactly where the dead would be expected to be found: the graveyard.
Where was a Vibrava's natural habitat, and what was the closest approximation to it in the park? With a clean mind, she began aggressively brainstorming...

After a few minutes of pondering the park's layout and features, Shalin raised her palm to her forehead. "There's only one place in the park that's got deep sand. The playground. Sandy's gotta be there. Rumble, let's go!" While Shalin didn't move from the tail, Rumble didn't rattle her, either; instead, his slithering tail swayed back and forth, the girl's seat lagging behind her Onix's model with each swish.
Leaving a rainbow-colored trail on top of every strip of asphalt she crossed, she asked, "So you say you're the key to the correct gate, Rumble?"
"That's correct," the Onix replied. "I can't say any more, but I am the key. Study me carefully and completely." Perplexed, she tried to dissect the meaning during the noisy ride back to the playground.
"Can you give me one quick rattle to clear my mind?" Shalin asked.
"I don't think that's going to help," Rumble deadpanned, surmising that his trainer was asking simply for the out-of-body experience his powerful tail could provide. He got one last laugh out of the Beta Tester before they arrived at the sand pit the wooden fortress's slides all led to.
"Alright, let's start digging!" Shalin cheered as she slid off the snake's tail. After she took cover, Rumble got started by powerfully rattling his tail, sandblasting the surrounding parts of the fortress. While she was hiding beneath one of the slides, she noticed a red triangle on its underside, with four grey circles to the right of it.
It did not take long for a second hum to accompany the tail, an oddly-colored Vibrava flying out of the sand pit and toward Shalin. "I'm so sorry it took so long to find you, Sandy," she apologized, taking note of the colors. It looked very odd seeing her blurred wings purple instead of green as they whirred, the dragon-type stretching her red body and gazing toward her trainer with her yellow head and eyes. "But now the whole gang's here! We just gotta... piece everything together and figure out this mess." And what a mess it was.
With four of the five colored shapes and their order located, she could easily conclude that the final shape in the colored-shape sequence was a yellow square that went in the second position. She now had the order of the shapes and the order of the colors. Furthermore, all six of her PokƩmon's colors pulled from just those five. She felt she had all the pieces of the puzzle now.
Putting the puzzle together would be the true Trial of Patience.

As entertaining as it was to sit on her bug PokƩmon's wing and indulge herself in the oddities that came with it, the chaotic motion wouldn't be conducive to putting together the solution to a complex and intricate puzzle. Instead, she sat on the end of one of the playground's slides, Rumble coiling his colored body around her to see the Beta Tester's notes and listen to her talk through it. "So there's a color order and a shape order. And I know that the color order and the shape order correspond to one another. Each of my PokƩmon has three colors, too. Three traits to each PokƩmon, three traits to each gate."
Reading across her PokƩmon's color notes, she noticed some patterns: the three colors of each PokƩmon were cordoned by body part: the head, some middle part, and the main part of the body. Rearranging them into one line each, she made a critical observation. "In each of the head, middle, and body, exactly one color is missing. Rumble, let's theorize for a moment that the missing colors correspond to the colors of the gate and the colored shape on the gate. That would mean that with no purple head, no red midsection, and no blue body, the solution must include the colors purple, red, blue, and the shape that corresponds to those colors. Right?"
The Onix frowned, shaking his head. "I'm sorry, Shalin, but I can't comment on that. For the Trial to reunite my spirit and body, you have to overcome it yourself."
She really wasn't going to be able to get even the slightest nudge that she was on the right track, was she?
"Let's say I'm right. Then that would eliminate all possibilities containing yellow, green, squares, and diamonds." Creating a greyscale filter over her notes, she drew boxes around every section of her grid containing a yellow or green shape, background, or a square or a diamond. This eliminated nearly two-thirds of the possible spaces, including four out of five known incorrect gates, the only other one not covered by her deduction being the red star on a red gate.
Standing up from the slide, Shalin walked to the opposite side of the playground and sat at a picnic table near another gate that she had not eliminated yet using her theory. Rumble slithered behind her, leaving behind a trail of tilled earth with streaks of his five colors covering the bottom. "Red star, red gate... Wait. This means that if they correspond one for one, the correct gate can't have any common traits in its three elements." She began to highlight more boxes in her grid, turning any with two common traits monochrome. When she was done, her method had eliminated all but six possible configurations for the solution.
"Hey, Rumble," Shalin got the attention of her Onix. "Can you lower your head so I can ride you? I want to see if we can track down some of these missing six gates."
"I would, but there's no need," Rumble answered. "There's one of them right behind you."
Turning around, she covered her mouth upon seeing the blue gate decorated with a red star. She walked to within a few feet of it, sat down, and stretched. "In theory, this should give us our answer," Shalin mused aloud. "If this one disappears, we'll know it's wrong, and we'll get some more clues as to what the correct solution is. If this one doesn't disappear, then we know it's correct." The girl yawned, growing quite weary after running around the park for what she didn't realize was hours. "I'm gonna need a power nap..." Unable to fight her weary body any longer, Shalin closed her eyes and turned on her side, averting her closed eyes from the glaring sun.
