Gou had no idea how to do this "heart-to-heart" talk that his trainer suggested.
Where could he even start? I'm sorry? What was he even sorry for? He thought he was doing good, getting that hit in before the Mantyke could do some more damage or worse. He didn't know that he was going to evolve from it, and for all he knew, maybe Kanya wasn't going to evolve if he landed the final blow.
It just felt awfully weird, or just plain awful, and he wished that Kanya would apologize instead of him.
But he had to be the bigger Pokemon, or so Kyukon told him.
<Is that something you have to do, being the bigger Pokemon?>
The question made his trainer pause; he looked unsettled. ❝It's supposed to be the right thing to do.❞
The Monferno decided not to press further, even if he was curious. He knew little of his trainer's background, other than he seemed to know things sometimes and in others had to ask for help. And he interacted with the world in a strange way - a way that (the monkey noticed) Kanya seemed to pick up faster than he did. He didn't know why that was the case though. Most of the time, he took how the world moved to be how the world simply worked, and that made sense in his head. Pokemon tended to be aggressive until caught by trainers, and trainers either chose to train these Pokemon or give them to others - perhaps to give chances to other people who cannot catch the Pokemon themselves. Communication between uncaught Pokemon and caught ones seem to vary, but most of the time, they did not speak at all. At least, that was what he had seen so far.
And for him, his purpose was to fight. To protect. To get stronger, because the world was dangerous.
He looked at his new, larger hands, flexed his fingers, formed them into tight fists. Deep down, he knew he could get much stronger still, and he still had yet to properly test this newfound power on something. So he asked his trainer if they could look for more Pokemon to fight, and he did agree, but he seemed to be interested to let Kanya tag team, which bothered Gou.
But he supposed his trainer was trying to help in his own way.
They were in the tall grass of Birchwild, where the trees grew tall and there were plenty of branches to swing from. With newfound length on his limbs, jumping from one tree to another had never been easier. Kanya, on the other hand, was keeping sure not to look at Gou, but with his height, it looked as if he was getting swallowed by the grass.
<I don't hear anything.>
<Not even with those bigger ears of yours?>
Gou thought about punching Kanya, just to get him to shut up, but he shook those thoughts away, surprised at its violent intensity.
❝Your ears are big too, Kanya.❞
<But his are–> he grimaced, seemingly giving up on a retort, and focused on walking.

None of them get it. Not even his trainer, but he was probably the only person who could get it if he knew how to explain what he was feeling (which was hard, because even he didn't know what he was feeling, exactly. Okay, so maybe it was ironic, but that didn't make him less angry about the whole thing).
This feeling of something had always been with him, but the more time he spent as a trainer's Pokemon, the more palpable it felt, the more it felt like that he wasn't sure of the what or the why of he did things. Sure, he enjoyed being able to beat down other Pokemon and exploring the world, but there was always something not quite right. Something (or someone) watching them? Watching him? He thought the something asked him once if he wanted to go back to Beta Island. He said no, of course not, why would he?
Oh but child, dear child, that is not even the worst part.
It was not specifically Beta Island that the urge wanted him to go back to, it was not being tethered, a different state of alive, a different kind of prison. He couldn't get the gnawing of distrust out of his head, so the solution was to fixate on the only drive he knew.
He needed to get stronger. To evolve.
Kanya's fur bristled before he suddenly bolted to the left, away from his trainer and the stupid bigger monkey, and towards a sound he could be imagining. All other things faded away - the shouts, the steps, the wind, the grass. There was only a cry that could be prey, and in hindsight, that could've been his own.

❝What the–?❞ the pop up appeared in Arthur's UI all of a sudden a second after Kanya bolted. There was only an X button to remove the notification, but nothing was written. Was it some kind of error?
<Kon..!> Gou had jumped down from the tree and was facing the direction the Sprigatito went. The trainer understood his intentions without him needing to say the rest.
❝I'll catch up.❞
The Monferno nodded once before taking off into the less trodded path. The line of trees here were denser, creating shadows that flicked as Gou passed through the sunbeams in quick succession. On the other hand, Arthur was still thinking of which other Pokemon to bring out to follow along, as he still had no suitable flying type Pokemon to do some kind of recon (he should really get one. The Mantyke he recently caught did not count, as the flying did not mean they could float freely). In the end, he let out Rou and Buru - two Pokemon that could move with relative ease while likely being able to follow his other two Pokemon through smell, or something.
<Smells nasty.> the Snubbull commented.
❝Huh?❞
The dog twitched her nose and sniffed. <Doesn't smell right. But it's kind of far….>
Arthur pursed his lips. ❝Got bad news for you, Buru. I think we'll need to get closer.❞
The Snubull was, after all, facing the same direction where his two Pokemon took off to.

<Kanya!>
The forest looked largely the same, but did not stretch onto forever. Eventually, it was stopped by a cliff that seemed to stretch to who knows where (it was hard to tell because the trees mostly covered the view of the sky). He could not go to the end, however, because there was something there. Something that shifted and moved unnaturally even if it was just standing there, staring down the cat's bristled form. Kanya looked so tiny compared to that thing, but Gou could only assume that it was hostile - it seemed ready to pounce at any moment.
The Sprigatito let out a sharp yowl before his collar glowed and let loose a flurry of Magical Leaves. It collided with the thing's black skin, but the glowing leaves would get absorbed into its body rather than notably do any damage. <Eat this!> he yelled before this time using Seed Bomb, but the attack had the same effect (which looked like basically nothing).
It was then the strange thing's turn to move, and it looked like it raised a leg to inch closer. It had a pair of eyes that looked uncannily normal against the rest of its body, and they were looking directly at Kanya. Before it could raise something akin to an appendage onto the cat, Gou ran in, letting his fist glow into a move he never used before: Mach Punch. It worked as a makeshift parry; the minuscule shockwave of impact enough to deflect the creature's leg(?) hand(?) it was hard to say.
There was a low hum in the air, constant and drawling.
<Are you-->
<NO!> the cat was about to bite the Monferno's flaming tail (or at least the part that was covered in fur), but Gou was able to quickly move it out of the way. <This one's mine! You're not taking this from me!>
<Are you insane?! That's not even a Pokemon!>
Fortunately for them, it also seemed to be moving slowly, as if unsure of what to do next. It was constantly observing them though - its eyes did not waver. <We need to get out of here!>

A generated Cottonee had been minding its own business, floating on a gentle draft, when a sudden shift in winds brought it down to the trees and into a strange sight. Two Pokemon were in front of something that it couldn't quite register in its eyes, like its vision was fogged up in front of it, except the fog had defined edges? It was weird. But there was not much to think about (frankly, it didn't really have the ability to think much at all at the moment) until something decided to whack it out of the air and straight onto the ground. The cotton ball bounced sharply before doing a couple more hops and rolling close to the two Pokemon.
<...ow.>
<Woah, are you okay?>
The Cottonee's vision was upside down, but it was not difficult for it to get itself upright again. <Think so!> it was floating a little above the ground, moving its leafy appendages. <What's going on here, anyway?>
<Well...>
Something was off. Like, the Cottonee couldn't really explain it, but when it got whacked, it was like gears started turning. Like, danger! And there were these guys that it could work together with! Though that Sprigatito did not seem so friendly (the Monferno commented, <Cleared your head?>, and the Sprigatito snarled, but then grimaced, as if trying to shake something off). Anyway, it had a clear thing to do: figure out how to get away or stop that thing, and maybe go with these guys after!
<Look, you won't be able to beat it unless we figure out some way to even damage it. Swear that I'll give you the final blow.>
The Sprigatito exhaled sharply. <...I know, I know there's...I can't figure out why I'm so angry.>
<I could help!> the Cottonee piped up, which prompted the two Pokemon to look at it. <With Helping Hand!>
<Oh, I'm not sure if-->
<No, it's worth a try. Maybe we just need to hit harder.> noticing that the Monferno didn't get it, the Sprigatito rolled his eyes and explained. <The ball meant it can boost our attacks with Helping Hand.>
<Ohhh. Right.>
All the while, the creature didn't seem to move all that much. It twitched, flickered, and then seemed to fixate on the newest arrival, shrinking itself in size before copying a Cottonee's body, but not quite. Its eyes, after all, were from a different Pokemon, and they hadn't changed, and the rest of its body was black with lines of white on it, glowing, looking like some kind of scrawl.

The glitchy Cottonee, now much smaller and more nimble, was now more erratic. It screeched without a mouth before zipping forward and then spinning wildly like a top. It aimed straight for Gou, who was arguably the most dangerous of the three, so the Monferno shouted for the other two to get out of the way before he attempted to catch the creature with his bare hands. It was nothing like a ball, but it was more solid than earlier - and there was some kind of force he couldn't understand that, in a span of a second, allowed to break free from his grasp and slam him on the chest. It sent him flying back, but the precious moments it was distracted were used for Kanya to make his move. If the thing they were fighting copied Cottonee, it might've copied the typing as well, which meant that it had one new move in its arsenal that could hit it for super effective damage.
<Hit me with that Helping Hand!>
The Cottonee let out a cry before its body glowed lightly - a light green aura that resembled a gust of wind then enveloped it before transferring to Kanya, which then covered him with a similar colored aura. Crouching down for a moment, the Sprigatito put energy and effort into his legs before running for a U-Turn right at their opponent. At first, the glitchy creature blinked in and out of vision, but when Kanya passed by its initial position, it quickly used its legs to change course land move to where he felt it would reappear, slamming it from behind. It only worked because he could still sense the presence of the monster; something perhaps as alien as the Beta Island he came from, but also something else entirely.

This thing was way stronger and way worse than the Mantyke.
Its Cottonee body meant that it did fly back when the U-Turn made direct contact, but it didn't slam into a wall, which meant that it was able to stop itself in mid-air. The creature, as if mulling over what to do next, suddenly spun around in the opposite direction, but then it glowed, releasing a flurry of white squares that travelled in lines, but then started to curve into paths that led anywhere. One went to the ground, destroying the grass, another went to a branch above, chipping its bark before doing enough damage to break it from the tree and making it fall onto the ground with a large SNAP.
Others were headed towards the three Pokemon, but they weren't directly aimed at them, so they dodged it with relative ease, though it took a little time for the Monferno to shake off the attack earlier. Unlike the Sprigatito, he didn't think about whether which attacks hit harder than others - he simply thought that he hadn't tried hitting it with fire yet, so that seemed to be the most prudent choice. He just hoped that he wouldn't cause another large forest fire.
Seeing an opening amongst the stream of sharp white squares, he shot a flurry of small flames (Ember) at their opponent - some of fireballs hitting the squares as they travelled. Kanya used Leafage to parry some of the squares and clear the path, and Cottonee also helped with Fairy Wind. In the end, the squares were cleared but none of them really hit the glitching creature, so Gou used that moment to run in with a risky Flame Wheel, not giving the monster reprieve before getting hit.

The hit sent the glitch monster flying once again, but this time it slammed into a tree bark, exploding like fruit into a blob of black and white before falling onto the ground, now looking more like a thin layer of splatter and puddles than something threatening. It didn't take long as well for what looked like the ground to absorb it, and then it was like it never was there, save for all the damage it caused in the surrounding area.
Gou only realized what he had done the moment he got his two feet on the grass and that the threat was eliminated. <Oh, Kanya, I-I'm so sorry, I was-->
But the cat only shook his head, looking like he had expected the outcome and was therefore not surprised. <It's fine. What matters is that it's gone.>
The Monferno pursed his lips. <Still, I didn't mean--about what happened last time, when I...>
<Hey, c'mon, stop. I should be the one apologizing.> the cat's ears folded down a little; his mouth tugged to a frown. <I can't get stronger alone, and being pissy isn't going to help anyone.>
<...if you don't mind me asking, why do you want to get stronger so badly?> to Gou, it didn't feel like the cat wanted to evolve because of his trainer. Earlier, it was like he was seized with something, but it wasn't quite fear. Not entirely, anyway.
<I can't say for sure. I just...something's just not right. And I feel like we're going to keep finding and fighting things that aren't...well, whatever that was. I just don't want to...> it had little to nothing to do with being a liability. For all he cared, everyone else could just get eaten so long as he escaped (well, he thought that, but if push came to shove, he actually didn't know if he could leave everyone behind. He liked to think that he could). But right now, he was the most likely to get eaten instead.
<Well, we're part of the same team. I won't leave ya out there.>
<...heh.> the Monferno was too good to him. As he thought, he felt like if there was anyone that could understand him, it would be his trainer. Maybe. He decided not to make any promises.
When Arthur finally found his Pokemon, he was surprised to find the pair walking towards him, looking rather worse for wear but alright, thank God. And there was another Pokemon following them as well for some reason (one that he didn't recognize). They explained that it helped them fight off whatever they were fighting, and that they wanted to join the team, if that was cool with him. Well, how could Arthur refuse an offer like that? It was certainly a bonus that it seemed he finally find a potential scout Pokemon after all that trouble.
