Josh had taken a few days off playing UNOVR. Working split shifts was brutal, getting up before 8 in the morning, working until 11, then going back to work at 6 and working until 11 again. All he wanted to do between segments of his split shifts was eat and sleep. And even then, he couldn't sleep easily, stubbornly laying in bed while trying to put himself to sleep with his traditional video game system when what he needed was pain reliever for a headache.
Been there, done that.
Relieved that the split shifts were over and that it was too hot to go outside for the weekend, he could log in and game all day, only signing out to tend to his physical needs. There was one important thing he had to take care of with Alicia Westfield . Now an Ironsmith, he could wear armor and wield weapons. Crafting them simply did not work out well. "Alicia, I've resigned to it," Josh said to his best friend in the game as his Galarian Ponyta steed walked through the upscale commercial district. "I'm not gonna try to craft armor. There's a weapon and armor shop down the street. Let's take a look."
After riding north for a few blocks, the young man saw a high-quality building with an Armarouge standee on the inside. Dismounting from his Ponyta, Mirage the Nincada still resting on his head, Josh stepped inside the building, only to be greeted by a store employee doing some cleanup around the entryway area. "Welcome to Armarouge's Armaments. How can I help you two?"

”I’m sorry...” Alicia immediately replied, wincing in sympathy. ”If I realized he was going to be that brutal towards you, I would’ve tried to stop at least the second hit...””I heard about that one. Big booboo central...” Nym chirped from Alicia’s shoulder. ”Giyun was real mean there...”Alicia herself was concerned about going to a weapon’s shop. Not out of fear of Josh getting swindled or anything. But out of concern regarding his ability to find the kind of gear he was looking for. She did notice the Nincada, but decided not to comment on it’s presence yet. Following the boyscout in, she glanced around at the wares until the employee came around to greet them. ”Hey. My friend here’s looking to pick up some decently good quality gear. Don’t worry about me though. I’m just going to be window shopping. Came by to keep him company, you know?”With that said and done, she stepped back to let Josh and the store worker talk shop about what he was looking for. Silently wishing Giyun could’ve reigned in his temper a bit more as she did. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"...What's done is done," Josh replied with a shrug. "Going forward, try to rein him in, okay? Though I'm not sure what kind of bridle a Pokémon like Giyun would accept..." he trailed off as he turned back toward the shopkeep. "Sorry about that. We had... a bit of an issue. Anyway, I'm looking for gear ideal for mounted combat, but not something overly heavy. It's important that my Pokémon aren't weighed down too much by the gear."
"Very good," the young female replied. "Take the second right, then go all the way to the end. That's where we keep everything equestrian-related." Perhaps he wasn't specific enough? Would they have armor for humans, or armor for Pokémon? He didn't want both.
Luckily for Josh, Armarouge's took good care of their prospective customers. The section was exactly what he was looking for -- the armor looked biased toward head-on protection, and the weapons were mostly polearms, one-handed swords, and other weapons designed for use from the saddle. He pointed at a sword shaped like a lightning bolt. Its yellow blade looked thin but incredibly swift. Even while stored, its business end danced with electricity. "That one looks right up my alley! How much is it?" he excitedly asked a nearby employee, who quoted him a price that was multiple orders of magnitude beyond what he could afford.
"You're also too low of a level to equip this. Even if you had the money, I couldn't sell it to you," the armorer added. As Josh focused on the item, he saw he needed to be level 35 to use the powerful and speedy weapon.
"Holy... that's gotta be endgame gear. What do you have that's like that, but for a character around... level 17?"

Alicia sighed softly. It would be in poor taste to remind him that he technically poked the dragon’s pride in a sore spot. So she would’ve come off as playing favorites if she tried to restrain Giyun on the matter. That said, she didn’t really think that Giyun would accept any kind of bridle. Not without shredding it in his sharpened jaws. Letting Josh shop around, Alicia hummed to herself and browsed the wares on her own. Not to buy anything, but to try and inspire herself to create something uniquely… her. When she’d first joined UNOVR the idea that she could wear armor and fight alongside her friends had never occurred to her. But the more she lived in this world, and the more she chattered with all of her Pokemon, the more she felt a real bond to them. A bond for which she would try to move the Heavens and the Earth for. And had done so, once already, for all intents and purposes. The Pokeball that never left her side under any circumstances was testament to that. And as much as she would dread it… she would do so again if the situation called. Only when they tell her ‘don’t’ would she stop reaching for them. At least to keep them on her team. She still would to let them have a chance to live apart from her if that’s really what they wanted. ”Ugh, even in my thoughts, I’m rambling on and on…” Alicia muttered to herself as she shook her head. Just in time to hear Josh get denied the super-awesome end game lightning sword. Mentally noting that down, she silently promised to work towards forging such a thing herself. As a gift. She’d seen the tag in the iron-like glade. Having read it, it was immediately obvious who wrote the wish. And so if he gave her the chance she’d try to make something above and beyond what was being sold here. It would… likely require her to max the Ironsmith class though. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

The single added constraint made the armorer frown. "I'm... sorry, but what I have for a character of your level is going to be a lot less impressive. Weapons with special properties, like the Lightning Sword's power being proportional to its user's Dexterity instead of Strength, tend to have steep requirements to wield them. It won't be as light, but I can recommend this to you."
Walking to the other side of the department, Josh was led to some medium-length swords. They didn't have the speed of a shortsword, and also lacked the raw power of a longer one optimized for mounted combat. "I know they're not exactly ideal, but these are the closest that also fits your level." He showed Josh a Heat Blade, a basic mystic sword with a fire-based physical attack and no other properties. Next, the Thunder Buster, a similar weapon that inflicted electric damage. There was nothing special to them other than their respective red and yellow glows when in the hands of a mystic knight: exactly how Josh had developed as an Ironsmith.
"Of course all the fun toys are locked behind late game," Josh sighed, picking up the Thunder Buster and holding it in his right hand. "Might feel a bit awkward to hold while mounted. What do you think, Alicia? Could take a look at polearms, too." This was a time he wished Armarouge's Armaments had a try-before-you-buy policy...

Alicia could understand Josh’s frustrations. There was nothing quite like being denied the shiniest toy in the building to apply soul-crushing sorrow. More than a few individuals would not take such a thing well and crumble under the pressure. And with Giyun’s actions causing the boyscout trouble… the pinkette could only sigh as they reached an undeniable impasse. How could they resolve this debacle? ”Well… I’m still pursuing the forging aspect of the class. Maybe I can find the means by which to enchant a more plain blade? Like Rikku lets you do in Spira” Alicia suggested. ”Then we get you to give it a zap with Zio or a singe with Agi and maybe we’re good to go. You’re paying a premium for the elemental effect, so if we can apply that effect ourselves you can spend those funds getting something suited for your style.””Why’re we so focused on the type damage anyways?” Nym asked curiously. ”Aesthetics.” Alicia answered back immediately. ”Oooooooh…” the Tatsugiri droned out, nodding a bit. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"Oh, you mean like upgrading existing weapons?" Josh asked Alicia, snorting upon her reference to a weapon customization system that was highly abusable. "Fair, because I still have to buy armor." There was still the defensive aspects of Ironsmith. Constantly being in the thick of combat, especially while in the saddle, meant that he needed to raise his defenses as much as he could. He was going to be on the front lines, and performing the somatic components of spells while in the saddle wasn't the easiest thing to do.
"Before I commit to anything, I'd like to look at armor, as well," Josh waved toward the smith. "I'm looking to prioritize low weight but with... this threshold of defense. What have you got?"
After performing a search, the shopkeep gestured toward the highest result. "This looks like it would be perfect for your needs and your level," he said with a gesture toward... a windbreaker? That wasn't even armor. It was just a green jacket whose inner lining blew around like the wind. "It provides more defense than it looks, and it even gives you force resistance."
Josh turned around and rolled his eyes. Force resistance was not a concern for him, and this piece of gear looked way too flimsy. The duo went back and forth, negotiating among pieces that provided lower defense, were too heavy for him, and other issues the child saw. "Arceus me, Alicia... it's like pulling teeth," he whispered. "Not gonna lie, I'm kinda inclined to just take the swords and grind. Because this is not at all what I was looking for."

Alicia couldn’t help herself. She smiled upon Josh snorting at her reference. That system was indeed horrendously abusable. Extremely expensive in some regards as well. But well worth expending the effort for it. ”Exactly.”Honestly, the entire later parts of that game were busted. Not all in good ways either… but that was neither here nor there. Moving on. Alicia shook her head as she saw Josh be directed to armors… and had to suppress a snicker. Of course he would be directed to something that only barely counted as armor and would need magical reinforcement to be of any use whatsoever. Fortunately she was able to get her composure back by the time Josh had come around to her to complain, rightfully so, about his options. ”To be fair…” Alicia began. ”You’re at an awkward point in the level curve with your current funds. Which is making catering to your needs next to impossible. As much as I agree it’s pulling teeth here, it’s not entirely their fault. And neither is the fault yours. Chalk it up to the setting?”The pinkette sighed at that. ”If I were you, I’d get something cheap as a hold over and get back up in the metaphorical saddle. The whole point between the unlock requirements for Ironsmith is that we were supposed to make screw ups. You can’t make good equipment without figuring out what went wrong. As traumatizing as Giyun’s attack was… it’s going to be a lot worse from those actively seeking to destroy you. He got close, absolutely, but he never intended to kill. The only reason Luna didn’t do nearly as much was because I’d gone overboard. But that made it impossible for me to dodge her pounce in any reasonable time frame. We’re both in the same boat, just different sides.”Her piece said, Alicia stepped back for Josh to make his choice. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Josh sighed; Alicia was right. He was at that in-between spot on the level curve where he couldn't equip any of the fun toys, yet mundane weapons would be lacking. At the very least, he could get a couple of elemental weapons and a jacket that looked tougher than it seemed, particularly against special attacks.
"That's... very fair," he admitted, Alicia again making him look like a fool. How was she so damn wise all the time? It seemed like she thoroughly thought through every action she took, no matter what kind of time pressure she was under. Just... how?
Turning toward the armorer, Josh came to his decision. "One Windbreaker, one Heat Blade, and one Thunder Buster, please." Silently, he retrieved the sheaths that the swords would rest inside when not in use, made out of special materials designed to resist their respective elements.
"Your total comes to 300 BYTES." Silently clicking in his UI to confirm the purchase, Josh was now the proud owner of two weapons and a chintzy piece of armor, each of which appeared on him after confirming to equip them in the store.
"Equip here" was such a nice convenience.
Josh's appearance had changed drastically with his new gear. "I...I feel a lot more safe now. Thanks for the help. Once I do a bit more prep work, I think I'll be finally ready to take on that Colossal Skarmory," he mused as he led the way toward the armory's front door.

Alicia smiled softly as Josh seemed to see the light of the circumstances. She did feel bad for the boyscout being in such a bind. But a bind he was in and they’d be able to get him through it with a few more levels. So she imagined Josh would want to bring her on some kind of grind session later. ”You look a lot more relaxed too.” Alicia added. ”Skarmory huh…? That’s a Rare one isn’t it? Going to need some serious fire power to make that happen. Hopefully if you need to ring for me I’ll be able to help.”With their business here settled, the pinkette would follow Josh out, musing to herself about how they would go about taking on a Skarmory. Rath would be absolutely critical for damage output in such a scenario at least… And with Tikani’s type mod she could tank most of the armor birds attacks once everything was up to snuff. But that would be a long time out still, she hoped. Things were expensive the higher up the tree one got! ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin
