After his second-place finish in the Asper Cup gave Josh the ability to teach any Pokémon on his roster Extreme Speed (though only one at a time), Josh was ready to take his racing and battle prowess to new heights. He was also one of the server's strongest guildless players. It was completely unheard of for a character Josh's strength to be guildless.
All three guilds appealed to him. Mythstar was all about exploring the unknown, which was a good way to get stronger. Round 2 was aimed at social players, and Josh was quite the socialite, trying to make as many connections as he could to leverage into quests and the like. The Creed satisfied his dopamine rush from "number go up", and would almost certainly be able to provide the resources to get a leg up on his PC rival Alicia Westfield . When they met for the third time in the Arena, their battle was going to be violent and brutal. He had to come out on top. And The Creed had all the resources he needed to do just that.
As Josh walked in to apply for a membership, a bouncer at the base's entrance stopped him. "Members only, kid. And you don't look like a member. Unless you're here to apply for membership?"
"That's... actually why I'm here," Josh hesitated at first, sounding more confident by the end. "I was looking for a guild to join, and I wanted to spend some time with each before making one my permanent home."
"We don't appreciate window shoppers," came a snippy reply that made Josh gulp. "Half-hearted members will--" The conversation would be interrupted by Kyukon 's presence, a well-respected guild member that had grown great in strength in recent weeks...

For a guild that focused on power and the arbitrary desire of increasing numbers, Arthur did not look the part with his Cottonee floating beside him - the newest addition to his team. Despite this, the bouncer immediately changed his tune upon seeing him - it was not like he was particular nice to this guy or even did anything memorable. He figured that his membership alone was enough to do a personality override, and the NPC put his hands behind his back.
"You may enter."
Well, Arthur was intending to enter, but he already noticed Josh - and he was reminded on how tiny he was now. It was basically accentuated by the large man standing in front of him, tall and imposing. ❝Thinking of joining the Creed, Josh?❞ he asked before turning to the bouncer. ❝This guy won't cause any trouble. Worst he'll do is challenge everyone to a race and wipe the floor with them.❞ he said with a wave of his hand.
"Trouble does not mean he is worthy to join, sir."
God, he was reminded of his bodyguard back at home. He faced the other trainer, with the Cottonee now sitting on his shoulder. ❝There should be an option in your UI to join a guild, or are you planning on doing this the hard way?❞ hard being - he felt like Josh to be the type to request an audience with the guild master for a formal meeting, something like that. Arthur only met her once, when he decided to join and check the place out. She didn't look like his mother, but she had a few resemblances in manner - he was faintly familiar with these types of women and usually kept a wide berth from them.

Not saying anything to the bouncer at first, Josh stepped toward Kyukon . From what he could see, everyone inside was so tall and imposing... like he would be on a one-way trip to the Everworld if he tussled with any of them. It may have been a good thing Tuesday and Verai had seemingly vanished from UNOVR; he had challenged them to a duel in the Arena, not knowing just how massively powerful they were. Even now, he wouldn't stand a chance, likely letting them relish in a flawless victory.
"I'm unsure," Josh admitted. "Like I said, I wanted to check all three of the guilds out before committing to one. Besides, I want an Absol badly, and I've heard that joining this guild is the only way to get one without trading for one. And traded Pokémon aren't as obedient as ones caught yourself, from what I understand."
"Racing?!" the bouncer barked, making the boy flinch. "What a waste of skill. That skill could instead be honed to climb the PVP ladder. To destroy the latest raid on day one of its release. Besides, he's just a kid. Tell him to join Round 2 or something. Those babies would be a much better fit for him."
The child was steaming mad. Completely blowing off Kyukon 's suggestion to simply join from within his UI, Josh stomped his foot down. "Then what can I do to prove myself worthy?"
The bouncer whistled for a substitute to take his place in keeping the base guarded. "I'll... be right back to talk to our guild leader."
Once the shift change had taken place, Josh turned toward his friend. "Sorry I blew up like that. Do all members of your guild have that kind of attitude problem?"

Arthur hadn't thought about switching guilds, but it made sense - if he was not going to rely on other trainers to get exclusive Pokemon in the trade shops, it meant that he would have to go there himself (though that meant wasting some precious bytes that he could use to upgrade other things). He did find it a little ironic that traded Pokemon were not as obedient, partially because he did still have Stura in his box (he had not been able to find time to meet up with Torino again), and they were technically trading Pokemon fodder in order to get the one rare one. So...did that count? He supposed not since they would be listed as the original owner or something.
But the bouncer was, for some reason, really pissed off today, and he mentioned something about the PVP ladder. It crossed his mind that he had not bothered to try fighting other players, now that Arthur thought about it. After all, he was definitely in no shape to square off against the more active players in the server, and he was quite enjoying the PvE aspects of the game. If the wild Pokemon and the NPCs could give him a hard time, what more of actual players? ❝Ash is just a kid--❞ he retorted, though it wasn't like the NPC would be familiar with the anime-only character, but the other trainer was not having it. It wasn't surprising - the NPC just blew off Josh's love, after all.
He was frankly more surprised that Josh didn't do something else. The bouncer that took his place was much quieter and stoic.
He frowned and shook his head. ❝To be honest, I haven't visited here all that much, so I haven't had any terrible run ins. The NPCs mostly just give some helpful info but don't say much else. I did hear talks about some of the previously active players though. Tuesday, in particular...❞ (when he heard the username, he realized that the tea shop in Briarbane must've been hers. Who else could have it been owned by?)
❝Anyway, I'm just here more for the trade shop than anything. Absol, right? Want to ride on the herald of death?❞ he said with a small smirk. Thinking about it, an Absol would be a cool Pokemon to have, but it wasn't high on his priority list, especially with such limited box space.

Josh could hear some raised voices within the guild hall, including that of the bouncer. Just what was going on back there? Shaking his head, he brushed the conversation off. "This is my first time here. I know power players are notorious for being snooty, which is why I'm not inclined to stay here very long," he whispered to Kyukon . "I'm honestly thinking Round 2 or Mythstar might be better for me."
As Josh stepped back and was about to raise his voice back to a more comfortable speaking one, Kyukon hit the nail on the head as to why he was interested in The Creed in the first place. "I do," he confirmed. "They're fast, can turn on a dime, and they're one of my favorite Mega Evolutions. I love their wings, and wonder if they could use them to fly!"

It was not like Arthur was oblivious also to the commotion happening inside. He couldn't quite tell what was going on though - they were too far to hear behind closed doors, and the walls were decently proofed. ❝Indeed, it's not surprising.❞ he muttered, as he knew plenty of people like that online and in real life. He only realized then that he was glad he hadn't met any of the sort so far in his adventures in UNOVR - nothing like the trash talking toxic piles of garbage in voice chat, anyway. ❝Do let me know how that goes and I may hop as well, especially if the Pokemon there are cool.❞
He listened to Josh and nodded along until he got to the part about Absol having wings. ❝Wait, they have wings? I could've sworn...❞ was he misremembering? He recalled the Pokemon being a sleek cat-like creature, something like a leopard or a puma or something. Nothing in his memory had "wings" listed as part of the description. Did Absol gain an evolution or something? No if that were the case, wouldn't he have said its species name?
But anyway, it looked like the commotion had died down as quickly as it had erupted. The substitute bouncer stepped aside while the original bouncer came out. His lips were sealed but he had a sneer on his face as he bowed and gestured to someone else walking towards them - a different aura than all the rest who were inside the base. Ah, he remembered this feeling, and he was not the most keen to expose himself to it again, but there was little choice in the matter.
❝Looks like you reeled in a big fish.❞ he muttered to Josh.

"Only when Absol is Mega Evolved," Josh confirmed. "I'll have to show you if I can procure one from the guild. Of course, I still have to get my Sweeper class completely maxed before I can Mega Evolve anything." That was going to take a lot of work, especially with him advancing his Tank class, too. He needed to do that if he wanted to survive his next encounter with Aravan Escher, his RIVAL. Before then, though, he had promised he would help get the poor oceanographer's Nihilego out of the Everworld.
Was that ever going to be a trip.
The initial bouncer had returned. "C.L.A.W. will see you. Follow me." With that, he trailed the intimidating guild member, who led them through a somber hall whose windows were tinted jet black. Dimly lit by a single chandelier, the entire hall reeked of dread. "Your respect in her presence is required. She does not take well to those who get out of line." Josh gulped; The Creed was looking less and less like the guild he wanted to join.
Once the two had been led back to a throne room that looked more like a castle dungeon's interrogation chamber, C.L.A.W stared toward the child with intrigue. "Welcome, Josh Devlin . I've been watching you for quite some time, As a candidate for the most powerful guildless character in all of UNOVR, you've come to the right place. While you are missing some ideal characteristics of our members, such as... your conscience getting in the way," she coughed, exhaling a puff from her cigarette. "Your raw strength isn't without merit. You even made a valiant effort against one of UNOVR's superbosses." Josh heart beat rapidly. How did she know? And did she know about Alicia Westfield too? Was she watching her?
As he remained silent, C.L.A.W. cut to the chase. "I tell you what, stranger. I'll offer you membership into the illustrious Creed if you can do something no one else had ever done before. I want you to go to the Challenge Tower and complete a tower of your choice. By yourself."
Josh staggered backward upon hearing the gauntlet that was thrown. "All 100 floors?"
"All 100 floors. Bring back the ten Pokémon you obtain from the tower as proof, then we'll talk membership."

Arthur nodded, pretending that he knew what Josh was talking about. In truth, he had never heard of Mega Evolution and didn't even know that was a thing. Was that different from regular evolution? Super evolution? Maybe it was just a new kind that gave Pokemon different appearances or something.
He figured that the bouncer was just referring to Josh when he said to follow, but of course the trainer was going to see where this was going to lead. He slipped his hands in his pants pocket as he strolled into the guild base. This was just the upper area of it, but most of the rooms and features were underground. The place was plush and posh, heavily leaning towards gothic, but there was a hint of the nautical as this was a lighthouse. He wondered why there would be such a structure when there didn't seem to be any water nearby, unless the land had changed significantly from when it was built. What could cause that kind of disturbance?
Eventually they were led to one of the rooms, and (NPC) C.L.A.W. sat there, regality hung over her person. While Josh was standing there trying to keep his wits about him, Arthur was much more relaxed, watching the whole scene play. It definitely felt like he was an observer in the middle of a quest being given, and he noted that the guild master was being particularly harsh, not sultry. Perhaps the AI knew that such tactics were not going to work on him, or was the guild master being warped by what Josh expected to see? No one would really know the answer to that. He raised a brow at the mention of a super boss, but frankly he had no idea such a thing existed, or if it was just specific to Josh doing something crazy again. For the NPC to acknowledge it, though...
And then the challenge was posed. Woah, where was this coming from? All he had to do was press a button and he was in, what was with the extremely tall order? This just weirded him out.
❝Seriously? you might as well throw in something to sweeten the pot.❞ Arthur spoke up, which basically caught the eyes of all of the bodyguards in the room. He could feel their glares, but he was used to such looks - he just had to keep his eyes on the one that mattered. ❝Ten Pokemon from the Tower - you know, that reminds me, your rarest trade is worth that, right? If Josh succeeds, a fair trade should include the Absol in there. It is something that no one else has done, after all.❞

"Wait, Absol is in the Creed's trade shop?" Josh gasped. That was even more of an incentive for him to climb a Tower. It would get him ten Pokémon to pawn off to the guild for the dark-type of his dreams. "Absol is one of my favorite Pokémon! I've got this Mega Absol plush on my bed back home... the most adorable thing!" The mention of a Pokémon plush and the word "adorable" made C.L.A.W. visibly wince.
"...I'm surprised someone who plays with toddlers' toys wants to join a guild about strength at all costs. You're not impressing me... so I'm adding one last condition to your membership, brat. Kyukon , how about you test him yourself? You're one of our newer members, and every member worth their salt has done something no one on UNOVR had done before. Race him to the finish. If he finishes first, he's in. If you finish first, he's out."
Wait, what?! Now not only did he have to finish a tower by himself, but it was a race against one of his friends? This guild really was for the hardcore player, wasn't it...?

Arthur raised his brows. Huh, he didn't see that coming, but at the same time, he was not opposed. His lips curved into a smile and he did a small bow. ❝Sure, I'll race him. It is a deal.❞ and that meant that the terms were absolute.
A quest notification quickly popped up in front of them, detailing the challenge. Any legacy tower was fair game, and there was no time limit (after all, this had never been done before). In truth, Arthur felt that it was possible since there was no deadline, it was really just a matter of who was first, and in a way, who was luckier with their prompts as they climbed the tower. Well, he was excited, because in this type of race, he actually might have a chance to beat Josh, and how many opportunities like that existed?
❝Just so you know,❞ he would tell the other trainer once they were out of that room with the imposing guild master. ❝I do not have intentions of losing.❞ he would worry about the lack of box space later. For now, it was time to head to the towers and get this started. ❝May Lady Luck bless us both.❞
