Sarah smelled the danger before she saw it. Something sweet lingered in the air like unseen rot. She sniffed, frowned, and moved faster, Braixen's armor softly clinking with each hurried stride.
They reached Josh Devlin too late to prevent a fight, but not too late to throw an early punch.
Flames and shouts of battle filled the tunnels, soaking the rock in heat and a wash of slow-cooling color. Burning footprints studded the salted earth, leaving a trail of sizzling half-moons that pointed to Sarah's targets like neon fire.
The Pheromosa sisters had taken a big hit from Josh and his Z-Move. Josh may be a newer player, but already his combat style had progressed well. In time he would be a formidable ally.
"Nice work Josh, Raiden, Ares," Sarah said, her eyes flicking to the newly-evolved Charizard. "I'll wrap this up so we can keep moving."
"Chell," Sarah said, and her starter appeared next to her in a flash of azure flame. The crawling dragon fire wrapped around Emboar's body, flaring as she sized up her enemies. "We don't have the luxury of letting this battle drag. Flare Blitz," Sarah commanded.
Emboar hunkered down. Blue flames twisted like serpent tails around her body, coiled and hissing with anticipation. Emboar took three steps forward, moving fast and low. She threw her weight into the strides, building momentum with each crashing step as she stormed along the tunnel. Blue flames streaked behind her like the tail of a comet, leaving a burnt yellow afterimage streaked across Sarah's vision.
Emboar busted through the pair of sisters, slamming into them with momentous, meteoric force, and never slowing a step as her indomitable charge carried her down the tunnel. As she finally slowed and turned back towards her battered foes, she saw Braixen raising her wand.
The wand was old. Older than Braixen. Almost as old as Birchwild itself. Braixen had taken it from the Noonlight Shrine, a gift from whatever force had made it fall from the sacred branches. Perhaps Moltres herself had broken the twig off in her shifting slumber. Perhaps Autumn had delivered in in due course.
Perhaps it had been Fate.
Braixen clutched the Noonlight wand in her mailed paw, the weapon pointed squarely at the long-legged sisters. Hybrid eyes narrowed at her opposition: A pair of sizzling sisters standing in the way of their advance like petulant bodyguards at the gates of a castle.
"Do you know what force you vainly oppose?" Braixen asked, fox teeth snarling behind humanous lips. Lavender light gathered in the length of her wand, her annoyance made manifest. "You cave creatures must be truly mindless, for you would not dare to bring fist and wing to bear against us if you had knowledge of our past heroics."
The light in her wand harshed and heightened until the burn tinted ultraviolet; suddenly invisible to Sarah's eyes. The heat remained. A sweltering, marrow-boiling heat that was concentrated in the last inch of Braixen's wand.
"Begone."
Invisible heat roared down the tunnel, and the shadows around Braixen snapped to sudden sharp-edged stillness, caught in a snapshot of crisp dismissal.
Notifications pinged in Sarah's UI like warning lights on a car's dashboard. Damage numbers for Emboar and Braixen's strain, a harsh red message for the usage of her Z-Move, and the constant ticking away of her resources. "Well done you two. Chell, fantastic as always. Focus, how could they help but fall before you." She returned Emboar and addressed Ruby and Josh Devlin. "We lost far too much time. We need to push forward. Fast, and quiet. No more surprises." She looked at the new fluffy companion clutched in Ruby's arms. "Where did you get a shiny Litten?"
A heartbeat past as her eyes did another sweep of the party. "And where the hell is Kyukon?" {Combat Breakdown} Emboar: Flare Blitz + Recoil ( Roll) 606 damage to Pheromosa Sisters. Emboar takes 120 Strain (230/350 HP). Z-Move Inferno Overdrive + Recoil ( Roll) 842 damage to Pheromosa Sisters. Braixen takes 120 Strain (230/350 HP). 1448 damage total

Rule #2 of Dungeon Spelunking: Never split up from your party.
Arthur was not eager to throw himself into danger. He had held his tongue, stayed his hand, and he watched his teammates run into the darkness. He didn't have the right to say I told you so because he didn't say anything, but he thought of it, felt like they were drawing unnecessary attention to themselves, but then again, if they were able to beat back whatever sinister thing was running amok in this place and save Josh, that was good, right? Hopefully they didn't need him there; he was going to be more of a liability anyway combat wise, as he knew that his current levels did little damage.
He soon lost sight of them, and the tunnels began to multiply in number - no, that was an overstatement, it had just split into two, and suddenly his mind struck him with doubt. Had they gone left or right? He just had to wait and listen for voices, didn't he? But when he looked to his left, he thought he heard something else, something dripping, wet.
Hie had come from the right tunnel, running back to his trainer, not wanting to get lost. Kanya was right behind him, and they confirmed that the others had gone through that tunnel, if he wanted to follow. The Floragato had an inkling of an understanding of him - that he was not so eager to trail behind them, not just yet. He breathed in the air and noted why they stopped at this particular fork. <Salt, nya. The stink of the ocean.> Kanya remembered this when they first met back in Beta Island, when they ran away from the fire, into the water, towards the shrine at the end of a sandbar onto a cove. It was undeniable, unmistakeable; the only suspicion that remained against it was where they came from: a desert with no body of water in sight for miles and miles.
How far down were they, and where did the ocean lead?
Wordlessly, Arthur gestured his Pokemon to follow him, ascending up the hill (it was somewhat steep, he could feel his feet sliding back ever so slightly if he did not step properly, as the water made the ground loose) until he reached its peak, which further in led to a series of pools. Kanya tugged on his shirt and pointed at something further away, and if he focused he could see that they were bleached Pokemon, similar to the ones at the entrance of this dungeon. It made him shudder, but in order to get there (which did look like there was more of a path to walk through? He wasn't sure if that was a dead end, actually), he had to walk around the pools - on those thin rocky paths that remains just above the surface, or had already sunk a little.
Thankfully, he had Swimmer equipped, and the water that dripped on him rolled off, keeping him dry. There was also a door with a lock in this location, but he didn't really know what that meant, exactly. The UI was helpful in this regard, informing him that this was an alternate entrance. Another way out? He furrowed his brows.
Unlocking this, if he even could do it on his own, meant two, no, three things: they could leave through here, people could come in, and whatever was in here could also leave from there. He supposed there was no point worrying about the last one - it wasn't like the monsters were trapped in here if they were able to bring so many Pokemon bodies. No, the party was trapped with them. A two out of three benefit felt like that meant he should try to unlock this thing, even if the This will cost resources pop up appeared with that option.
He let out a sharp sigh and then pinpointed the entrance. He then withdrew Kanya and Hie - there was no point in exposing them to danger nor bringing them in this next leg of the journey, for the hatch was located at the bottom of one of the larger pools; a deep blue under the limited light of the cavern. He then let out Anta, who chirped happily in a much cooler and wetter environment, and he called her to his hands so that he could check for any signs of sunburn. Luckily, there was none.
āReady for your first dive?ā he said softly. She bubbled in slight protest, and even if he couldn't understand her, he felt she was saying something along the lines of, this isn't my first! To which he responded, āOkay, okay, I stand corrected. Your first dive with me.ā
And that seemed to appease her; she nodded once, which was basically moving her whole body, and he stepped towards the pool, his feet soon less an inch away from water and depth. There was no telling how deep this went, but as an explosion set off from one of the other tunnels, Arthur felt like he had nothing to lose. They were fighting, and he only prayed that they would succeed.
āAnta.ā
She went in first with no hesitation, he followed by fighting down the urge not to step forward. He immediately sank, submerged fully in water, and he couldn't help but hold his breath before consciously telling himself, forcing himself to remember, that he could breathe. Breathe. He inhaled, felt air in his lungs, exhaled. Shuddered. The only thing different from above and below was that his limbs felt more sluggish, but otherwise, it was only notably cooler.
Arthur looked down. There was nothing but the void.
The Mantyke let him hold onto what was best described as her shoulders, even if she didn't have any, and began to swim downward. Progress was slow with him holding onto his Pokemon, but he was also kicking his feet in hopes to help with the dive, and even with Swimmer, it did not stop his ears from popping; his mind starting to pulse from pressure. He tried to keep his breathing steady, but once in a while he would forget, seeing bubbles exit from his mouth, and panic would rise before he had to hammer it down. Eventually, after what felt like an inordinate amount of time had passed, they reached a bottom; a lone, seemingly manmade hatch on a bed of sand, rock, and bleached bone. He placed his hand on the handle, feeling rust and metal, took a breath, and then pulled.
After three or four tries, he heard noise, felt the entrance move, unlatch, unhinge, and then the door pried free. He expected a current to pull him in, but fate was kind at this moment: it only gave him a little more light at the other side, which seemed to show nothing but another cavern tunnel.
He decided it was better to go back the way he came rather than explore this.
When they broke the surface of the water minutes later, he let out a gasp of air, struggled a little bit, completely spent, before clambering up to the rocky path. Instinctively he thought to dry himself, only to find that his clothes were still pristine and his hair a slightly disheveled mess. āGod. I don't want to do that again.ā he muttered before thanking Anta for her help.

Ruby had to admit, the tooltips that appeared still caught her off guard, but she was used to UI elements appearing in her vision at this point. And yet, something about this seemed... off. It looked like the bodies had types, unchecked. Like, Darumaka was only Fire type, right? Why was it showing Fighting and Electric? The others equally showed false and true types.
Out of curiosity, she would reach up and attempt to poke "Ground" when the tooltip came over the Sandshrew, when her attention was immediately drawn away from the bodies by the call of one of her PokƩmon.
[tangent="Incoming! Twin threats, inbound!"]"Dee! Deedee!"[/tangent] It sounded alarming, like a warning.
And sure enough, within seconds something arrived. Two cockroach-like... sisters?, began gyrating. Not only was it uncomfortable, but their threatening presence immediately made everything that much more dangerous.
She could share this Tooltip wisdom in a moment, for now the lives of her friends were being threatened. Ruby immediately tossed out another PokƩmon, Faye her Fennekin.
"Darling! Protect the Litten!" Ruby immediately cried, watching as the protective Indeedee immediately cradled the heavy cat within their arms, having to pull themselves away from their strange, unsettling discovery. That too, would have to be addressed in a moment.
Ruby had seen Evolution happen before, but none of her own PokƩmon had ever evolved. To watch as the Charmeleon did it before her very eyes was awe-inspiring, and her PokƩmon certainly agreed, especially as they watched the Z-Move fire off as well. These Pokemon, these trainers, they were all certainly powerful. But no doubt such moves definitely put such a strain on their bodies.
"Darling, Faye, help them out! Patch everyone up!"
Without hesitation, Darling would immediately begin a silent prayer, a Healing Wish would suddenly wash across Josh Devlin's Zebstrika, reinforcing their strength all while also washing over Sarah Lee's Emboar. Their mind still distracted with the presence they detected, and cradling the Litten carefully. An uneasy look had spread across their face.
All the while, Faye took a far more active approach. She weaved in close towards the newly evolved Charizard as it blasted, buffing its strength with her Psychic energy, and stitching together its wounds. All before suddenly skidding to a halt in front of the Braixen. They looked like a person, but there was no fooling their nose.
They knew family when they were near it.
Their Psychic Energy would wash right over their body, only to immediately brush up against the Braixen's legs as soon as combat was now over. It seemed, the sweet gal, was looking to bond in the infentesimally small moment they had to rest. This place was hell, it was comforting to be in the presence of one familiar.
As soon as the two Ultra Beasts were put down for now, Ruby would let out a sigh of relief. She still didn't know what the Litten was saying, but judging by the confusion of her Pokemon, they probably didn't know either.
"Well done everyone. But- Yes, please. Let's not do that again. Not if we can help it. Josh, Sarah... Lady Richtung, Marchioness of Schneeland." She'd give the brief moment to bow politely, feeling almost odd without her kimono as she addressed the Braixen, glancing at Faye beside them. "But before we go, I have some news. And Kyukon-"
She sighed, it seemed they were going to need to collect everyone again. Perhaps it was for the best though, maybe they found something? She could only hope. "I don't know. Safe, I hope."
"Firstly, however, the Litten came from beneath a pile of bodies. Kyukon found them. They're... speaking nothing I can understand. And supposedly healthy. But-" She'd glance at her Indedee, who was still distracted by the ominious, ancient thing she sensed. She'd eventually snap back to reality, glancing at everyone before speaking, in the way that she did.
[tangent=""Boy. Healthy. Oddly Heavy, and a unique coloration. Unable to speak normally. My guess? They are special, keep them safe. but I-""]"Indeedee. Dee dee. Indee-"[/tangent] She paused, trying to figure out how to broach the conversation about her... senses.
Ruby unfortunately didn't know Darling wasn't done speaking. She was swift to speak up softly as soon as the silence began. "That also said, examine the bodies. Close. It's... as if they have extra types being attempted to be assigned to them? Or, maybe removed? I don't understand it, not yet. I don't fully understand what I am looking at, but I can see it?"
As Ruby spoke, her Indeedee suddenly tugged on her pants leg, immediately causing her to look down at them. Almost right away, she realized just by the fear on their face that something was wrong.
"I- D-darling, it's okay, I'm here. I'm so sorry." She'd immediately kneel down, holding one hand into her own. "What's going on? What did you find?"
[tangent="I sensed something. Dark. Crawling. Ancient. It's... intense. Something is here. It's old, older than I can fathom."]"Dee. Indeedee. Deed."[/tangent]
Ruby still as of yet, was unable to understand, but tones of voice are still easy to understand. They were terrified, even as they kept breathing, doing all of Ruby's own normal panic control strategies. Breathing in and out at exactly every 5 seconds, as if they were counting.
Her heart broke, and she felt terrible for having to look around at the other Trainers clueless, silently, dumbfounded, hoping someone would translate. Why had she been so stubborn to keep Speech off, anyways? She had all these excuses every other time, but right now... she couldn't picture a single good reason, and it hurt.
It meant she had been wrong every other time too.
[tangent="I can see... if I can find anything else."]"Dee... Indee."[/tangent] The Indeedee spoke, only to try and hand the Litten off to Ruby. Just in case.
Ruby didn't understand, not until the prompt appeared before her eyes.
PROBE DEEPER? [-5 RESOURCES]
Once again, she grew pale as a ghost, feeling as if her stomach was going to curl in on itself for subjecting her to this. She'd take the litten, trying to carry them gently, nodding her head. "O-okay. Yeah. Yeah. Probe Deeper. Just... Promise me, you won't go too deep. Don't end up like the others."

HEARTEATER PT.1
4. DEEPERāāāāāāāāāā Progression Bar: 24% | [tangent=-3 (Sarah, Braixen, Emboar) -3 (Josh, Zebstrika, Charizard) -2 (Kyukon, Mantyke) -4 (Ruby, Indeedee F, Fennekin, Litten) -5 from Open the Hatch -5 from Probe Deeper]118[/tangent] Resources Remaining | Litten: 700/700 HP |
Throughout the heated battle, still dangling from Ruby's Indeedee's arms, the white Litten appears to be trying to power up an attack. A small ball of light appears in front of it and starts to grow largerā but it fizzles, leaving the feline panting and exhausted. Fortunately, Josh Devlin and Sarah Lee are able to finish the sisters off without assistance. Barely.
Perhaps if Litten had something to eat, it would be able to finish charging that attack?
FEED LITTEN? [-10 Resources] Progress has essentially stopped, but fortunately, the battle took place at the tunnel exit. From their current position, the team can see a vast, funnel-shaped pit, sloping down into the earth. Should you peer in, you will see what looks like a dark red fog obscuring the bottom. The stone path you're standing on spirals down around its circumference in a lazy coil, leading to the next floor of the dungeon.
Two additional entrances are visible on the far side. Out of one of them comes Kyukon, perfectly dry, showing no sign of his underwater adventure. Harbor Entrance unlocked! All went without a hitch, though the white-haired trainer may think back on his dive and realize he and Mantyke hadn't been alone in that water. Something else had been moving in the depths.
Perhaps it's good he turned around when he did.
The other entrance is marked with a familiar locked-door icon. It would be a detour from your descent into the dungeon, but perhaps a worthwhile one. Or maybe one person could handle it on their own?
OPEN NEXUS ENTRANCE? [-5 Resources]
Ruby's Indeedee hears a voice. It slides into her thoughts like a knife, twisting, pressing for something. It rings with commanding presence.
But she doesn't understand what it's saying.
The voice grows frustrated. It feels around her mind like a person in the dark, seeking connection. If it finds itself thwarted by the Indeedee's mind, Darling may be just as overwhelmed by the alien consciousness. It doesn't think the way she does. One easy-to-understand emotion dominates all:
Hunger.
Hearteater wants to eat.
The Indeedee's mouth moves, and sounds unlike anything you've ever heardā except, perhaps another Ultra Beastā curl blasphemously from her tongue.
"ā¬āā āāā'ā āā āāāā, āāāāāāāā-āāā°āāā."
You see the Indeedee's eyes are fixed on Litten, who squirms free and jumps to the ground. It talks back in the same strange, modulated language. "āāāā āāā
āāā
, āāā°āā āā āāāāāāāā
." It takes a threatening pounce forward, like a cat jumping on a cricket. "āāāā āāāāā ā
āāāā āāæāā, āāā ā°āāāā āāā°ā° āæāāā āā!"
The presence suddenly vanishes. Litten seems satisfied, and jumps back into Ruby's arms. Hearteater has withdrawn: for now.
What the Indeedee can still feel is a connection: terminated, but not yet broken. Hearteater has many more pawns on the next floor: ones it can more effectively control. You are still in danger. And she gets the sense that if it chooses to do so again, it will not come so unprepared.

Arthur dusted himself off, thinking that he was swiping away water droplets, but that was just a lingering, phantom sensation from the dive. He took a number of deep breaths, in, out, in, out. Even if he could fill his lungs with digital air underwater, it still felt different from breathing air on land, even if it was humid and thick, with a faint taste of sea salt. Looking around, he noted that there was a clear path further across the pools, leading somewhere else. Instead of retracing his steps, he decided to follow that for now, seeing where his foolishness would lead.
Would this be the last time he would see his teammates for the duration of this run? Would they have thought he abandoned them? He was more concerned about what he should say if he ever saw them, depending on the state they were in. At some point, since the water-touched cavern walls started to recede, giving way to drier climate, he withdrew Anta and let out Gou this time, finding the starter's presence comforting.
The Monferno glanced around. <Where are the others?>
āI lost them.ā he lied. āBut with luck, these tunnels might converge at some point.ā
<With luck?> he questioned, but trying his best to keep his voice slightly above a whisper. How much would they rely on luck before it ran out? The Monferno frowned, but then noticed that his trainer's hand was trembling slightly. He softened his glare and held his hand. <Let's go find them, then.>
Arthur nodded silently before continuing the descent; the tunnels now moving downward. He hadn't said it out loud, and he wasn't sure if his Mantyke had noticed, but now that he was out of the water, he felt tethered to a memory of movement, ripples; something surrounding them, watching, waiting. It felt like invisible hands wringing him, but also whispering fearful doubt. Was he just being paranoid? He gripped his Pokemon's hand tightly.
Rule #3 of Dungeon Spelunking: Always stay calm in the face of the unknown.
Eventually, their steps led to a tunnel's opening and a spiraling pit. To Arthur's relief, the others had just come from one of the larger tunnel entrances, and they all looked fine. He wasn't alone (for now) - he let go of the Monferno's hand so that he could half walk, half jog to the group. āGlad to see you all in one piece.ā he noted that Josh's runaway horse was still on the field, which made him uneasy. At least the blond haired kid wasn't riding on them. āSorry I wasn't able to keep up to pace, but I did find something interesting along that other tunnel.ā
He pulled up his map and showed them the areas he had uncovered, particularly the cavern pools and the hatch he was able to unlock. āIt looks like some kind of entrance more than an exit. It seemed more beneficial to keep it open so that we have more options for escape, or perhaps others can find their way in. Actually,ā he pointed to the other locked-door icon across the party. āThe icon looked like that. Opening that other entrance sounds like it can be worth our while.ā
He wasn't sure whether he would volunteer himself to open it, but if he could. āWhat did you end up finding?ā
While listening, they were suddenly interrupted by one of Ruby's Pokemon speaking in tongues, to which the cat replied in kind (hostile; it felt like the creature was telling whatever invaded the other's mouth to bugger off). Like a while ago, the cat's dialogue as well as their intrusive guest was logged onto their dialogue notifications, which gave them a chance to translate, if they could. He pulled all of the utterances so far to see if he could form some words. āYou...others?ā he lightly shook his head. Sarah seemed better equipped for this. āIs your Pokemon okay?ā the last thing they needed was one of their own turning against them.
He also took a chance to take a better look at what was waiting for them below, which seemed to be the logical next step to their dungeoneering. The mist sure was welcoming, but they would need to get closer to figure out if the mist was breathable...or flammable (he remembered one particular game that made poisonous smoke prone to exploding). If he wasn't asked to check the other locked door, he would volunteer to take cautious steps down the spiral - at least to get a closer look at the mist; at least until it was about to touch his feet.

Their little group had busted into the dungeon and roared down the central path, faced powerful foes and come out the other side into a moment of relative peace.
Another chance at stealth.
"Well fought, now rest up you two," Sarah said, as she returned Emboar and Braixen. "Pokemon away if you don't need them," she advised the others. "We need to conserve out resources, especially if we're going to be feeding another mouth and unlocking every entrance."
"Great work, Kyukon," Sarah said, marking her own map with the Harbor Entrance that he had just unlocked. And the revelations didn't end there. Her eyes followed Kyukon's words over to the newly revealed Nexus Entrance. They would need every advantage, every angle and scrap of information that they could get their hands on. This place wasn't stingy with its secrets, but everywhere they looked Sarah found another hint pointing to something larger. Secret entrances, bleached bodies, unknown alliesā
"ā¬āā āāā'ā āā āāāā, āāāāāāāā-āāā°āāā."
Sarah froze at the alien sounds. Unfamiliar phonemes now formed in a familiar mouth. Ruby's Indeedee was speaking the alien language!
The Litten lashed back with its own strange, hissing babble, and the presence vanishes.
"What was that?" Sarah asked Ruby. "Are you okay Darling?" She felt weird asking that. She didn't even call Michelle darling. "I think things have just escalated," she proclaimed. "That sounded menacing, and based on what Ash was saying about Hearteater being a psychic presence I'd bet that was it right there. That was Hearteater speaking to us."
The question hung unsaid in the air.
Well what did it say?
She looked around the group. Beside her, Kyukon was scrolling through a chat log. "Great idea," she said, pulling up her own UI and setting to work breaking the code.
Kyukon made the first breakthrough. It was only a few words, but after that the characters fell into place one. The devs had been kind. This wasn't some ciphered system or wild new conlang. This was just an alphabet written with strange letters and spoken with unfamiliar sounds.
As Kyukon pressed further into the dungeon Sarah kept working on the translation. It wasn't hard to decode, just to understand when it was spoken. Catching what was happening in the moment would be truly difficult. "I think I have it," Sarah said, after a few minutes. She sent through her translations to the ground dungeon chat.
"That's the translation, but it'll full of unfamiliar phrases. Farthest-walker. Three doors." Her attention shifted to the Nexus Entrance awaiting their unlocking. "Though that one is logical enough. Next we have to unlock open the Nexus Entrance," she said to the others. "If it's what it sounds like then we'll be opening this place up for players to access it from every route in Ostellia." She smiled, they were about to secure a huge advantage for the upcoming battle.
She turned to Litten. "Is that what you meant? Open the the three doors to the outside?"
"And as for the last phrase: Mist and red." Sarah looked down the stone spiral and down into the deep, obscuring mass of the red mist. It reminded her of an antlion pit; a quicksand funnel that pulled any stumbling prey right into the jaws of the waiting predator.
And yet she couldn't help but be pulled into the pit. Maybe instead of quicksand, it was some sort of psychic gravity. Perhaps it was a sense of duty or fatal curiosity that dragged her feet down the path that ringed the red mist plug. Perhaps it was a rich melange of many things that drove their expedition inevitably downwards, towards the next level of the dungeon.
"We push on, swift and quiet," Sarah said, stepping lightly on the stone path. They didn't need another combat. Worse, they couldn't afford it. If they drew too much attention and the next encounter was another 2,000 HP wall then they were toast. Both Josh and herself had used up their Z-Moves. Unless she rolled some absolutely phenomenal Catalyst rolls they were in for a -50 resource retreat. That would put the squeeze on them like nothing else.
And so she moved slowly, pressing forward as fast as she dared, ever closer to the lair of Hearteater. She felt it in her gut, now. The presence of something grand and omnipresent. It wasn't much of a guess to say it was at the bottom of the pit āBosses were always at the lowest place in the dungeonā but something about having a concrete link to that conclusion made the realization hit much stronger. Litten had called Hearteater Mist and Red and, well, there it was, swirling below them.
"Hearteater is down there," Sarah breathed, "and it knows we're coming."

The speed demon found himself on his knees after both he and his newly-evolved dragon poured their all into the HYPERNOVA BLITZ. The Z-Fire attack's added oomph made the difference between victory and defeat, thanks to Ruby 's and Sarah Lee 's support. "Couldn't have done it without either of you," Josh panted, still trying to catch his breath. "Knowing how much it takes out of you doesn't make it any easier, though!" He remembered getting tossed from side to side when racing Raiden deep within the Surge Steppes, the momentum powered by their velocity putting great pressure on his lower body.
Being stationary while executing the Z-Move helped him recover substantially faster.
Once the boy scout mustered the strength to rise to his own two feet, he saw Kyukon returning from the tunnel. "Kyukon, you're okay! What did you find?" he asked the older Kindler. Listening to the account, it reminded him of his trip to the DOORTALS with Nero . "One day, I was doing some swimming with Ulysses and my inactive Swimmer class, and we found this seemingly endless array of doors beneath Route 7. Any of that sound familiar to you?"
Josh would wait for the others to answer before continuing. "We went through some of the doors there, and we found some... disturbing things. One of the doors was a portal to a location deep within Mistra. I'm confident it's deeper than anyone's been. As soon as my Dewgong stepped through, the Corruption was so intense that he became affected by it. Far as I'm aware, that's why his maximum HP is lower than what it should be." There was a lot more to it than that, but that would be a story for when the party wasn't in so much danger. "Long story short, it seemed like you could access any map in all of UNOVR from there, long as you knew the correct door. It was almost like a giant fast-travel hub."
A UI message would interrupt his thoughts, beckoning Josh on a trip to the "Nexus Entrance". As much as he wanted to, he couldn't. They needed to make better time. "There's also something we haven't tried yet. I need to see how Izoni reacts. She's the quietest PokƩmon I have. I knew I should have brought my Liepard here... she ended up being the last cut." Withdrawing Ares, Josh swapped his Ball with another one on his belt, a Naganadel emerging from within and poking a fierce-looking purple barb out of her long, central sting. The alien creature landed for Josh to sit astride. Just as he was about to place his hand on her and mount up, a buzzer sounded around him, along with a red UI message:
Error> You must be at least level 28 to mount this PokƩmon.
"Guess I'm going on foot..." Josh sighed, dejected. "Well, wish us luck." With that, Ultra Beast and boy scout delved deeper into the mist with no fear. While he doubted they would make much progress, being quiet was important. If the first level had PokƩmon that threatening, they couldn't afford any more encounters. Izoni's gambits, searching for a hostile PokƩmon to MARK, may have been something Josh overlooked.

Ruby was quiet, her eyes scouting the area. Progress had stalled for now, but that didn't mean it would forever. Her eyes would be distracted from the strange pit and the fog, seeing the Litten was hungry. She saw the little prompt to feed them, and considering they were readying an attack, it probably would be a wise idea to make sure they could defend themself.
FEED LITTEN [-10 RESOURCES]
"Here you go, lil' guy." She pulled out a few snacks from her backpack, a little bit of jerky for the cat. It should hopefully be pleasant.
She'd return Faye the Fennekin back to her ball, the less bodies they had about the better. It would be good to have them helping in combat, in case something happened.
"I think, opening the other entrance sounds pretty good." She'd nod her own head in response to everyone else. "If you opened up one of the paths," She glanced over at Kyukon as she spoke. "Then, perhaps opening the Nexus entrance would be a good idea-"
"ā¬āā āāā'ā āā āāāā, āāāāāāāā-āāā°āāā."
Ruby stilled immediately, fear gripped her heart as the Indeedee's lips were not their own. Terror pierced her very soul, stunned silent.
That was not her voice. That was not Darling's voice. She didn't even know what Darling truly sounded like, their real words, but that was not what she sounded like. Whatever the words meant, there was an undeniable message.
Hearteater knew they were here.
Litten jumped from her arms to begin communicating back, and it was enough of a shock to make Ruby immediately begin to move. She swiftly jumped forwards as well, moving to place her hands right atop the Indeedee's horns.
"Shh, shh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Ruby pleaded, her words were panicked. "I'm sorry I asked you to do this, please, just come back to me. Please, please-"
The presence fades, but Ruby didn't let go. Even as the Litten returned to one of her arms.
It took a few moments before Darling came back to their own senses, sighing heavily and leaning into their touch. They'd glance at the others, [tangent="I am, okay, everyone. I am okay..."]"Dee..." [/tangent]
"Darling, I-" Ruby had nervous tears, stumbling with her words. As the others moved to decode the language, Ruby was far more concerned with Darling.
[tangent="It's... it is okay. I am okay now."]"In.. Indee."[/tangent] She leaned into Ruby's hand, focusing on sensing her trainer's own emotions instead, for now. [tangent="It was... hungry. That was all I can understand."] "Deedee."[/tangent]
She focused on the expressions of worry, fear, and deep love of her Trainer for her PokƩmon. That focus, that love, it helped ground her. The little Indeedee was quiet, staying close to the trainer. Their psychic senses were still active, that presence still existing. [tangent="C-careful, there's still more I can sense them, I can-"] "Dee, Dee dee-"[/tangent]
The translation was suddenly revealed, and Ruby immediately stiffened all over again. Her face was as pale as a ghost.
Farthest-Walker.
Did the Hearteater know her name?
Ruby Walker.
She was absolutely terrified. Her heart nearly beating out of her chest as she stood up again. Her blood was pounding so hard she could swear she could feel it in her ears. "I-"
[tangent="Ruby?"] "Dee?"[/tangent]
"... G-guys, I'm, I am gonna- I'm gonna go unlock the third door. I promise, I'll be quiet. Just, be careful. Please. Everyone." She was absolutely panicked, and it absolutely showed. Her eyes were wide, fear visible in her expression. "Three doors open, let's open that third door. Let the light in. I'll be quiet."
Darling grew quiet, frowning softly. Her trainer was clearly absolutely panicked. She just grabbed Ruby's hand, squeezing as tightly as she could. [tangent="Yeah. Light sounds good. I think we could use some light."]"Indeedee."[/tangent]
Regardless if anyone followed her, she needed a brief moment to just think. It would do nobody any good to see her panicked so badly. She'd be quiet, kneeling through the tunnels, holding the Litten in one arm and Indeedee's hand close.
It was probably for the best that she had their company, at least. That fear in her eyes, she should not be fully alone.

HEARTEATER PT.1
5. ST. ELMO'S FIREāāāāāāāāāā Progression Bar: 72% | [tangent=-1 (Sarah) -2 (Josh, Nagandel) -2 (Kyukon, Monferno) -3 (Ruby, Indeedee F, Litten) -10 from Feed Litten -5 from Open Nexus Entrance]95[/tangent] Resources Remaining | Litten: 700/700 HP |
The next floor down is not as deserted as the previous one. Invasive Species periodically float down the rocky halls, patrolling or drifting aimlessly. You see Pheromosa Sisters, Blacephalon Brothers, Kartana Cousins, and Uncle Guzzlord. But they are easy to avoid. The duo of Sarah Lee and Josh Devlin moves quietly, avoiding drawing attention to themselves. They duck into alcoves and alleys. They know what's on the line.
Hooves clop in the hallway as the latest group passes. Josh's Nagandel suddenly grows tense. Since its release, it has merely seemed uncomfortable to be back in Hibernaculum: now it is finally reacting to something.
A group of the colorless Pokemon has just passed through the passageway: not comatose, not paralyzed, but walking. Swirlix. Shinx. Squirtle. Another Pheromosa, this one more demure. And the sound of hooves, of course, from a bleached-white Ponyta, its silent flames like St. Elmo's fire. To Josh, who spent so long searching for this PokƩmon on the Steppes, it is as familiar as an old jacket.
The other pale PokƩmon continue down the passage, legs trailing scarlet fog like puppet-strings. Ixion, however, stops and turns its head towards you, its nostrils flaring. Red mist trails from them in wisps, curling like smoke. Its eyes are blank, unseeing, but it seems to sense something nonetheless.
A [tangent=PONYTA: ā ā ā]tooltip[/tangent] appears above its head, invisible to anyone but the players.
BEGIN COMBAT WITH PONYTA? (-25 Resources, Roll for Combat)
REMAIN IN STEALTH (Ponyta escapes)
Kyukon finds the spiral growing more and more narrow as he descends, funneling more and more tightly towards the center. By the time he reaches the bottom, he is able to ascertain a deeper chamber below the first. The dungeon is indeed hourglass-shaped, with the first two floors on the top half, and the rest below.
Here at the center, the mist below forms almost a pool. It brushes against Kyukon's ankles harmlessly - no acid or poisonous effects. Neither does it ignite at Monferno's tail-flame. It feels warm, humid. One might reach out with a hand to touch it...
The red mist forms a ghostly hand, as if to touch Kyukon back.
Then its trailing fingers unfurl, opening into a flat palm. It waits. Expectant.
GIVE SOMETHING TO THE HAND? [-5 Resources] Ruby opens the Nexus Entrance and, of all things, finds sunlight. A clear shaft of light reaches all the way down here from the surface, allowing thick green moss and plant life to grow. As Kyukon rejoins Ruby, Litten jumps down to go flop in a sunbeam, wiggling on his back. "ā°āāā āāā, āāāā āāāā," you can hear it modulating to itself before it flips over and gets back to snacking on trail rations.
Also inside the door is a bunch of papers. Office memos. Broken printers and xerox machines, covered in moss. They form a small mountain, mixed together with various salvaged trinkets the invasive species have apparently brought down here. Night-vision goggles. A striped, black-and-white belt. A business suit and briefcase. A book that crawls with something dark.
CLAIM LOOT? (-5 per item) This loot will be unlocked as an option for all players at the end of Hearteater Pt.2. Higher up, requiring a climb, are some more exclusive items: A bottle filled with lightning. A metallic sticker, printed with circuitry, and another one embossed with a set of whiskers. A feather cloak that shimmers with flame.
CLIMB FOR LOOT? (-15 per item) This loot will be unlocked as an option for all players at the end of Hearteater Pt.2. Deeper in the pile, wedged tightly beneath a wealth of junk, you can see even rarer loot. A circlet of thorns. A scattering of icy jewels. A set of manacles. Even a bazooka that looks like it was built to fire Pokeballs.
RISK IT? (-30 per item) This loot will be unlocked as an option for all players at the end of Hearteater Pt.2. Sarah Lee, the Commander | Josh Devlin, the Specialist | Kyukon, the Inheritor | Ruby, the Observer

Have you not learned anything from last time? Shut it, I opened the door. I "let the light in". They can handle themselves just fine.
Arthur let them go, because a leader like Sarah would forge ahead without fear (with caution), because someone like Josh was bold, often reckless, but a force of his own. They should be fine. Laying low meant a better chance to survive, and more opportunity observe what [tangent=Coward, you shirk on your responsibility]had[/tangent] [tangent=There is no point, you are but dead weight where it counts]been[/tangent] [tangent=The one who will leave alive is the one most selfish]missed[/tangent]. As he watched them descend without him, he stopped at the center, the point where the figurative sand of the hourglass trickled to the bottom. The mist settled here, and with the other two in the party passing through with no reaction, he figured that it was safe to touch, but not linger.
Before he could move back up to join Ruby, who he felt needed more support at the moment and shouldn't be left alone, the mist swirled, rose, shaped itself like it was alive. Tendrils becoming something vaguely like fingers and a palm that was as large as his own hand. It faced downward first before turning its hand upward, expectant. Arthur hadn't realized he had lifted one of his arms up to stop his Monferno from approaching any closer.
<What...what is that?>
The pop up floated on top of it, the game goading him to do something. He didn't respond to Gou right away, opening his inventory to see what the options even were. All of his common items were grayed out. The only things he could give were any of his active Pokemon and his key items. Without even knowing what this thing would do or if something would be given back? What a farce, he should just turn away and leave it.
...but the thought didn't materialize into action.
<Kon, we should head back. Kon?> he pulled on his trainer's arm, at first gentle but concerned, later a little more panicked and frantic, but Arthur glanced at him, told him, wait.
Rule #4 of Dungeon Spelunking: Always feed the hand that calls to you.
There was something else that was not grayed out that he could offer.
He outstretched his hand to meet the mist. One of its red fingers lengthened and coiled around him - first his own fingers, then his hand, snaking up to his arm, to his shoulder, and then without even touching his chest, drew something out. It took the form of a small, light orb before withdrawing, enveloping what was taken and rejoining the pool. It did not move again, as if it was never alive.
The Monferno was aghast at what had transpired, but Arthur remained still, if not looking drained by the encounter. <What did you do?> it was accusatory, but coming from a place of worry and fear. The trainer realized he had only heard that tone in stories, not in real life.
ā...nothing significant. Hopefully a failsafe.ā he muttered. āWe're heading back up.ā
When he rejoined Ruby in the first floor, the door was already opened, and light came in droves. The cat seemed pleased by this, and it was also nice to feel sunlight (not harsh, not the desert) on his skin. In front of them was a swath of different items, and Arthur could see tooltips pop up when his eyes glanced over them, meaning that they each could do something, he just had to investigate them a little further. āSome kind of treasure trove..?ā
A treasure room, in other words, usually safe in dungeons, but one could never really tell in this case. Rather than going right for the loot, he tried to look around some more with as little noise as he could. His footsteps still echoed here, and he tried to pick up some of the papers that weren't completely overtaken by the moss, hoping to read what was on it. āWhat do you think,ā he asked Ruby, āShould we try to take one of these home?ā

Descending to the second basement, Izoni became more and more uncomfortable the deeper Josh walked. Was it the white-colored, zombified-looking PokƩmon that left the Naganadel unsettled? No. It was something far greater. A tooltip popping up at the bottom of Josh's HUD, near Izoni's party icon, shed light:
Josh rolled his eyes. So much for the idea of using Izoni. "I would presmue Apollo, and other Invasive Species, would also suffer similar status conditions if brought out," he speculated, voicing his thoughts to Sarah Lee . "My guess is the condition will last as long as we're in Hearteater. If I'm right, then that means if anyone makes it out of here alive, they need to tell our rescue party not to bring them here. I could be wrong, but that's what my intuition says."
Continuing onward, the sound of clacking hooves left Josh caution. "We've got company," he whispered as Izoni floated in near silence on his purple wings. The sound directed his attention to a line of bleached PokƩmon walking toward them. There was a distinct mark on the PokƩmon's left wing - one Josh recognized when he removed his own PokƩmon's saddles from them at night. "That's... Shalin Nariya 's Pheromosa, Sarah," he pointed. "I remember them from the Asper Cup race. Only one person on the entire server is crazy enough to ride one."
At the rear of the line of PokƩmon, a bleached Ponyta stopped and turned her head toward Josh. "Ixion?!" he gasped, perhaps making a bit too much noise. "You're alive! What's happened to you?" he asked. "Your fire is... not what it should be. It doesn't burn as hot as it once did." Eying the tooltip, Josh noticed there were three checkboxes: NORMAL, FIRE, and ELECTRIC. "Sarah, you think that's how we rekindle her flames?" he asked the Commander.
Reaching for his PokƩ Balls containing Ares and Raiden, Josh swiftly withdrew Izoni, thanks to his well-practiced ESCAPE Core Ability. Sending out two of his closest PokƩmon, he waited a moment to see how the electric horse would react. Raiden seemed... oddly comfortable around the Ponyta, his emotions in line with Josh's. He wanted his racing partner back: one of the few PokƩmon Josh had that could truly push him to his limits. "THUNDER WAVE, Raiden! Ares, FIRE SPIN! Use nonlethal force!"
The electric attack would reach the Ponyta first, Josh hoping the static would harden the speedy PokƩmon's muscles and prevent her from escaping the wide tornado of flames the Charizard belched and snorted toward her. "Sarah, relying on you for a Normal-type attack! I've got Kindler and Bolter mastered, so I can't use Normal-type attacks!" he relayed.
There was one more thought Josh had. If the FIRE SPIN wasn't enough to rekindle the Ponyta's flames, what about exposing her to another source of fire energy? Going into the inventory menu, Josh rearranged his items so that his FIRE STONE was on top of his inventory. Retrieving it, the hot item glowed in his hand like a lava ball, the only reason he could hold it directly being his KINDLER mastery. With an outstretched arm, he reached toward his lost PokƩmon, seeing if exposure to Fire-type radiation would reignite her flames to burn as brightly as they once did.

Sunlight. It felt good to finally welcome it down here. Seeing the moss and plant life grow felt good to behold, certainly helping soothe her worries for a bit.
Maybe, life could help restore color back to the Pokemon that were stuck down here? Seeing the Litten seemingly happy, wiggling about, was almost enough to wash her fears away.
Almost.
That thing, it knew her name. Right? It had to have! There was no other way to imagine it, a coincidence seemed entirely out of left field, even if it was technically possible.
It just didn't seem very likely.
Still tense, Ruby would be thankful for Kyukon 's arrival. She let out an immediate sigh of relief, looking back at them. "You okay? I'm sorry I- I kind of just, left for a second. Everything is... Intense, is a strong word, but it defines it all well."
All the sudden loot in there, however, had Ruby's attention. None of it was a priority, but her eyes still scanned through it all regardless. "We should go back to the others, I think. We're here for information, not- Wait, what?" Ruby's eyes immediately locked onto the jewels tucked deep within the pile.
Wedge tightly amidst all the junk, laid a multitude of interesting items. A thorn circlet, some manacles, even a whole bazooka! But none of that could compare, in her mind, to the Crown Jewels.
Why were they here? How did they end up here?
Did a Player lose them? Did the Princess somehow survive, and end up here, taken by the Hearteater?
Perhaps that all seemed so illogical... but the fear that it somehow drained the color of some Legendary that used to dwell here wasn't off the table.
"The Crown Jewels." Ruby suddenly spoke as if just saying the name of the item explained her decision, pointing forwards into the mass of items. "I'm grabbing that pile. Please, watch out for me."
Ruby would swiftly press forwards, her Indeedee keeping watch and turning around to scout the room as she squeezed in between some of the junk, luckily having a small teen avatar made that a bit easier. She'd carefully grab the frozen ice crystals, carefully placing them into her backpack to carry for now. It was better than leaving them here to rot.
RISK IT! (-30 PER ITEM) THIS LOOT WILL BE UNLOCKED AS AN OPTION FOR ALL PLAYERS AT THE END OF HEARTEATER PT.2.
Once back out of the pile, she'd take a few moments to catch her breath as she looked back up at Kyukon . "Now, we should go back and join the others. I'll keep an eye out. Just-"
She shuddered, looking back down where they came from. Confronting... Hearteater wasn't their goal, and yet she was certainly terrified they were going to come face to face with it. "Just, be careful. I really, really don't like this place."
Turning her attention back to her Indeedee, Ruby would give them a sympathetic smile. "Darling, I know I already put you through a lot. But, I'm going to need you a bit more. I'm gonna summon another friend."
Darling simply nodded their head, grabbing Ruby's hand in one of theirs.
Ruby would swiftly summon Murmur the Munna. The lazy Pokemon rolled over in the air for a few seconds, before even it swiftly realized the tenseness of the situation and righted itself right away.
"Murmur, like before, I need you to be my eyes. Explore, carefully. Don't get too close to anything, but float around, show me what you can see, that I can't."
[tangent="I can do thaaat-"]"Muuuuu-"[/tangent]
With that in mind, the Munna already floating off slowly, but carefully back the way they came, and inevitably moving to float down following the light, through the rocky halls. Their eyes were wide, used to being a scout for Ruby. They floated around during the Thunderfall Raid to watch the whole situation go down, like some frontline war reporter. But this was certainly different.
It felt almost like there was more riding on things this time. Murmur stifled their yawns, forcing themselves to focus as they'd follow the light directly, sticking close to the ceilings of the cave to avoid detection.
Ruby, meanwhile, would glance back up at Kyukon . "I'm uh- gonna do a neat trick, don't worry. I'll still be able to hear and see you you, through Darling too. Just, get her attention, okay?"
For a brief moment, Ruby worried that with her Dreamer abilities to see through their eyes and hear through the ears of her Pokemon, that she'd somehow expose herself even more psychically to the Hearteater, with Darling still certainly connected. She squashed that fear down right away, letting out a very shaky, nervous breath before suddenly-
Falling asleep.
Her eyes fluttered shut right where she stood, all as Darling seemingly began to walk back. While still holding Ruby's hand, the trainer would float up off the ground, as if weightless, being dragged around like a balloon. Her other free hand would swiftly move to scoop up the Litten, cradling them gently as she walked.
[tangent="Don't worry,"] "Dee."[/tangent] Indeedee would begin, smiling up at the fellow trainer. [tangent="We do this all the time, although never like this. Maybe, a bit of rest however brief, would help her nerves... I hope."] "Indeedee. Dee...dee."[/tangent]

Sarah and Josh hid in the passage as the pale Pokemon trudged past. Sarah had never seen some of these Pokemon before, let alone pale versions. "They remind me of the shiny Litten," she said slowly. Not quite, but there was some strange link between the Pokemon being colorless and the Litten being...not quite so.
She turned around to compare with Litten but Ruby and Kyukon were gone! Last time she had checked they were only a little ways back. Sarah grit her teeth. In the urge to press down further into the dungeon she had let the party get split up. She should have kept a closer eye on everyone. They couldn't afford to get lost down here. She sent them a quick message through their group chat.
As they watched the white parade, Josh passed her vital intel and his conclusion: The kidnapped Pokemon were being controlled while they were within Hearteater. "In Hearteater?" Sarah frowned. "This place is called Hibernaculum. The boss is Hearteater." They weren't inside the boss. Unless...She looked at the red fog trails drifting from the limbs of the Pale Pokemon.
Had Hearteater lured them inside?
Josh advised her further, that many of these creatures as victims of Hearteater's kidnappings. And he knew many of the trainers whose precious partners had been snatched away by Ultra Beasts.
The white-flame Ponyta was his.
Sarah nodded, and relayed the info quickly to the group. "We'll get Ponyta back," she said to Josh. "You engage, I'm right behind you."
She sent out Focus the Braixen, and disabled Kindler in her UI. The pair moved in as Josh attacked first. His style was strong, but he still needed to hone his control. Sarah winced as he hit his own Pokemon with full strength. "Pull your punches Josh," she said swiftly, as Braixen darted in and landed a single basic attack of Scratch.

6. TAKE HEARTāāāāāāāāāā Progression Bar: 78% | [tangent=-2 (Sarah, Braixen) -3 (Josh, Zebstrika, Charizard, Ponyta) -2 (Kyukon, Monferno) -4 (Ruby, Indeedee F, Munna, Litten) -25 from Begin Combat with Ponyta -5 from Give Something to the Hand -30 from Risk It (Unlocked: Crown Jewels)]23[/tangent] Resources Remaining | Litten: 690/700 HP |
Ixion stands, a colorless specter of its former self. Another heartbeat and it will turn away again, sightless eyes questing for its fellows rather than its former friends.
ā āāāā āā¬āā āāāāā¬āāā an eerie message comes from Josh's Nagandel before it is cut off and returned into its ball. The strange moment is dutifully recorded in your 'past dialogue' log.
Josh Devlin and Sarah Lee have surprise on their side. With each attack, a color is restored to the Ponyta's bright mane: with Fire Spin comes orange, with Thunder Wave comes gold. And with the final Scratch attack, its ghostly hide becomes a warm cream color once again. Though its knees buckle under the onslaught, Ixion's dark eyes show clear recognition.
There is a ping! as the greyed-out 'X-Zone' icon is suddenly restored in Josh's storage box, and the Fire Stone he had been holding begins to glow with brilliant light. The reclaimed Ponyta begins to evolve: of course, Josh may still press <B> to stop it.
Red mist boils off the horse's body and escapes deeper into Hibernaculum, returning to its sinister source.
[tangent=*This Pokemon will act like a bonus pokemon in addition to Josh's standard team. If recalled early, it will not be able to return to the dungeon!]IXION has joined your party![/tangent]
Crown Jewels retrieved, Ruby sleeps peacefully. She lets her consciousness spiral out, following the mental signature of her Pokemon, seeing through its eyes.
Munna makes its way down the passage, reaching the scene with the restored Ponyta. Sarah Lee in particular may notice the little pink Pokemon bob past, floating deeper into Hibernaculum, and may recognize it from its key role in the Thunderfall Raid. But the Munna continues (or leads) on, finding the tunnel slopes down, following the hourglass curve.
Multiple chambers branch off from the main tunnel, each filled with various things. Some are stocked with unmoving, colorless Pokemon. Others are stocked with plants, fresh water, and small balls of light. A creeping dread assaults Munna as it finds one mist-filled chamber pulses with Corruption: twisted shadows and many-eyeballed monstrosities slither listlessly around the room, searching for a way out.
Back with Ruby's body, Darling's eyes cloud and the Indeedee suddenly speaks again, toneless.
ā āāāāāā. āāāāā āā āā¬ āāāāā... Munna has to take cover as Invasive Species suddenly flood the room. They snatch up the corrupted items and Pokemon as if they were nothing, picking the pile clean. Horrors beyond comprehension struggle helplessly in the grip of Nihilego and Buzzswole as they are carried away, emptying the room and leaving something behind.
A glowing crucifix is embedded in the stone like a sword, hilt-up.
Munna cannot retrieve an item meant for a player. It certainly cannot wield a weapon. But perhaps someone else could?
Retrieve Crucifix? [-5 Resources] Kyukon, alert to potential danger after his solo dive, hears it coming first. A high-frequency whistle, a flutter. A flurry of white shapes like butterflies, coming from above. Something is changing in him. Was it this bright in here before?
A Kartana Swarm pelts from above, summoned from the surface at Hearteater's bidding. They tear through the pile of loot like paper planes. Cloaks, cuffs and seals are ripped away by a tornado of whirling shapes before the swarm buffets the entire tunnel, pushing the group back out of the Nexus entrance and deeper into Hibernaculum.
Strangely, they avoid Ruby and her Indeedee. Perhaps the 'unconscious' player fails to show up on their radar, or they recognize their master's touch on Darling's mind. Litten jumps down. Its paws ring like bells where they strike the stone, a thwongg! that reverberates clearly through the tunnel. Something is different about it: its legs seem redder than before, a bright vermilion that shines like metal in the sun.
"āāā āāāā āāā āāāā!" It braces itself, energy collecting in a bright ball in front of its mouth, and its fur ripples with heat and light as a charged SOLAR BEAM is unleashed at full power. It sears down the hallway, blasting Kartana away like paper dolls.
Kyukon feels a searing pain. His skin burns, his eyes pulse at the light. The sunlight at the Nexus Entrance was uncomfortable: this is now unbearable. One of his hands is dissolving into crimson mist, evaporating like fog in the midday heat.
A heartbeat passes. One, two. Ka-thump. Ka-thump. Ka...
The third heartbeat never lands. It endures: undying, unliving. Unbeating.

Color flooded into Ponyta, diffusing across its body like ink through milk.
"That's the secret," Sarah said, smiling as boy and horse reunited like a scene from a warm fairy tale. She sent a swift message to the others to detail the discovery. She marked the message as high-priority, and frowned at the lack of replies in the group chat. Was it bugging out? Were the others simply busy?
She received her answer in the form of a familiar pink creature: Ruby's Munna. It floated deeper into the dungeon, and Sarah immediately clocked the implications. "Ruby is asleep and scouting ahead," she told Josh. "She's likely holed up somewhere safe. I'm going to follow Munna. Either join me or head back and find Kyukon."
Both were solid options. Now that they had cracked the big secret she had a rising feeling in her gut. They were going to make it out.
Sarah and Braixen trotted down the tunnels in Munna's silent wake. Together they saw more Pale Pokemon, no longer such a mystery, they saw store rooms full of plants, light and water, surely food for Hearteater. And then they saw piles of living Corruption.
Sarah recoiled from the blackened masses. Why was there Corruption here? She'd heard no talk of Corruption in Ostellia! It had to be purged immediately, before it could spread! She looked at Focus and nodded.
But before they could wage fiery war on the darkness, a group of Ultra Beasts whirred into the room and picked up the screaming, malformed clumps. Sarah watched in furrowed confusion as the Corruption was carried away like so many sacks of potatoes. "How can they hold it?" she asked, words carried out on a quiet breath. "Did you see that?" she asked Munna, and Ruby beyond.
The room was now empty, save for a glowing crucifix embedded in the floor.
Sarah approached it. "A sword in the stone?" she wondered aloud. It was an old tale, and the meaning was clear. If she could draw the blade they she was the rightful King of Britain. Or, in this case, perhaps just a worthy leader for this expedition.
Of course she was! She was a leader in both worlds, her actions backed by long-sought knowledge and hard-won experience. She was the commander of this mission into the unknown. The strongest of their group. The logical choice for leader!
So why were her hands shaking?
Why was her party split? Why were they on the knife-edge of failure? Why was there so much doubt clouding her mind like dull, red fog?
What would a leader do?
Sarah raised her chin and reached out, grabbing the crucifix hilt.
She drew the sword as easily as her next breath.
Her arm strained to hold the weapon, her skills untrained in this digital world. She had been deemed worthy to hold the symbol of leadership, but not to wield it in battle. There was something very poignant about the situation, and Sarah grit her teeth as she sheathed her new weapon.
Perhaps in time she would learn to wield it.
A high-pitched whistle echoed down the corridor. Sarah turned her head towards the source of the noise. it hadn't sounded human, and none of her team would have been careless enough to let out such an obvious alarm.
"Munna, let's head back!" she said, backtracking down the tunnel. There was a distant roar of light and sound as someone let off a tremendous blast of energy. Sarah's skin prickled. Combat. She broke into a jog. She could hear Focus' armor clanking softly behind her. They passed the spot where Josh had saved his Ponyta. There were no signs of combat here.
She looked around for signs. There was a constant, high-pitched fluttering coming from back up the hourglass. Sarah looked back the way they had come and saw that the light had changed. It was much brighter.
She sprinted back up the tunnel, not caring for the sound she would make. They were split and under attack. It was times like this when her leadership would be truly tested.
As Sarah approached the Nexus Entrance she entered the battle proper. Kyukon under attack by a swarm of Kartana! "Focus. Protect him," Sarah ordered.
The lavender knight nodded, flipped down the visor on her helm, and pushed her way into battle with the origami horde. "Give up now!" Braixen shouted to the Kartana. "You will never push us back!" She launched a wave of purple flames into the melee. Tremendous heat crackled through the corridor, baking the air.
The light feeling in Sarah's stomach was still there, but instead of it filling her with hope it felt more like the moment right before the roller-coaster drops. She rushed over to Ruby and shook the Queen awake, catching her as the floating Dreamer sleep wore off. "Queen Rubella, the time for dreams has passed," Sarah said. "We have pressed far into the belly of the Hibernaculum, but there is more to find. More to uncover. And crucially, much to report to the world above." She put Ruby down and spared a swift glance at the battle behind her before continuing.
"I have taken us this far, and were I more adept at this role I would have perhaps taken us further." Another wave of heat roared through the tunnel, pulling the saliva from her mouth. She swallowed. Wet her lips.
"I will not be making it to Hearteater."
The words stung. The main purpose of the mission had been to reach the end, and here she was falling at the final wall.
No. Not falling. She was bracing her back against the wall so that she could help the others over. She had wanted a challenge. She had wanted to hone her leadership and here was the whetstone.
"I must stay here, holding back these creatures so that the three of you can make it to the end." Sarah put a hand on Ruby's shoulder. She gripped tight. "And you must lead the group the rest of the way."
Another wave of flame swept down the corridor, bathing Sarah in a purple glow that shifted to backlight Ruby.
"Goodbye, your Majesty. I will give you and Kyukon as much time as I can." She pulled back her hand from Ruby's shoulder and took a step towards the battle. "Now GO! Get out of here! I'm about to light this place up!"
Sarah turned to face the fight in a whirl of rainbow flames. Her jorts switched from Power to Cool, letting off a little burst of frost. But this was more than a symbolic transfer of power.
Sarah opened her UI and tapped swiftly at the icons. Kindler was re-equipped. "Warlock! Block the tunnel. No Kartana gets past us!" Sarah shouted, as she sent out the ice-clad bird.
Warlock stretched her wings, almost filling the space with her enhanced wingspan. "I'm not large enough," she said, voice as slippery as a swallowed worm.
"You have your role," Sarah replied. "Block the tunnel."
Warlock nodded, eyes hard as she stared down the Kartana. Bright light from the Nexus Entrance streamed through the cloud of enemies, glittering against Warlock's icy wings and casting a thousand tiny rainbows along the tunnel walls. "It will be done."
New light gathered in Warlock's breast, cascading down her body as she evolved. Sarah nodded. The wings of a Pidgeot would be perfect. Then a second burst of light, stranger than the first, followed on the heels of the first as Warlock Mega Evolved. Warlock let out a screech of war and extended her wings, stretching them to their limits. Her glorious crest rippled down her back like a frozen waterfall.
"Sunny Day!" Sarah commanded.
Sunlight streamed in through the Nexus Entrance, roasting the Kartana from behind.
"Fire Blast!" Sarah yelled, over the sound of sizzling metal.
Braixen unleashed another wave of flames, and the tunnel became a furnace.
The mix of brilliant lights merged and refracted, bouncing off each other with powerful intent. An explosion of multicolored light triggered in the midst of the swarm. Then another. Catalyst was turning their fight into a reactor that fed on their light and formed new colors in the chaos.
Behind her, the Catalyst light had seeped into Pidgeot's icy body. Rainbows refracted inside the giant bird, filling Warlock's wings with enchanting light. Her body grew like Winter ice, wings groaning with the sound of fast-growing crystals. She had followed Sarah's orders with flying colors.
"Catalyst Overclock!" Sarah cried, her words lost in the roar of flame and the BOOM of exploding attacks. She had spent all Thunderfall trying to trigger the attack through flashy attacks, but to no avail. Attack after attack with not a single explosion.
And now here she was, holding the line in an act of true leadership and it had triggered. It was a sign. A sign that even when the battle was impossible she would be granted the strength to fight on if only she did it for the right reasons.
Warlock bent her huge wings over the top of Sarah to shield her from the explosions. "We're not going to make it out of this!" she said solemnly, her ice body shaking with the effort of holding together in the heat.
Sarah placed a hand on Warlock's neck. "I know," she replied. "But everyone else is."
The sunlight pouring in from outside brightened further, strengthened by Warlock's Catalyst empowerment. The tunnel shook with detonations of rainbow light that painted impossible afterimages on Sarah's eyelids. There was a final explosion of impossible sound, and the three of them raised their voices in a roar of triumph.
They were united. A single, impenetrable wall that could hold off any enemy. No matter the size. No matter the strength, or number. This is what it felt like to be a true commander.
This is what it meant to be a Leader.
