Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

The little feline rolled over onto its back and she scratched its tummy, feeling the static building in her hair, arcing off her hairpiece and turning her bobby pins into a faraday cage. Bzzt! "Ah! We've got to do something about that," Sarah said, rubbing her neck where the spark had pinged off her. She left Shinx rolling on the floor and went searching through the drawers of Poke-care goods. "Here we are! An anti-static brush!" She sat down again, cross-legged, and worked on removing all the electric tangles from her Pokemon's hair. As she did, she could feel the electricity in the room start to dissipate. Her hair felt less like a battery and more like, well, hair. Shinx mewed, rubbing against her hand, the carpet, the brush, everything, as if trying to mark the world with his musky magnetism. "I think I'll call you Steve," Sarah said, scratching the little cat between the ears. Steve's ears pricked up, and a cascade of happy sparks jumped around Sarah's hand. "You like that huh?" she asked, as more sparks jumped. "Yeah you do!" She pushed over the little kitten, playing carelessly with him as joyous bolts scattered around the room, zapping the doors and window frames. "Who's a good boooooy!?"

"There MUST be something more nutritional than that," Sarah said frowning at the mess of clothes and wood splinters spreading across the floor. The default refresh playroom looked like a kindergarten, and a room filled with foam, toys, and cute hats isn't super stimulating when the toddler has a bite force of a titanium crocosaurus. Sarah brought up her UI and flicked through the options. Beach? Too wet. Forest? That's just more wood. Savannah? Why was that even an option. Pokemon Center? He'd just chew through the electronics! She swiped faster. Train, office, bedroom, kitchen- she clicked filter and removed urban options -clouds, underwater, volcano, cave, WAIT. Cave? She clicked it, and the dresser and carpeted floor disappeared, replaced by chunks of stone, and crystal flooring. The soft lighting was switched with gentle bioluminescence, and the educational poster that read "BOOKS ARE FOR COOL KIDS!" was replaced with a family of Zubat. "Perfect! You can eat anything in here," Sarah said. Rushmore gnawed at the quartz chunks sticking out of the flaw. He snapped one off and chewed it like a butterscotch candy. Sarah sat down next to Rushmore. "Do you feel any different?" He shook his head and pulled a piece of flooring up. This one looked like slate, and he crammed it into his mouth. It crumbled like a cracker. "No new powers? No...changes?" Larvitar looked at her stragely, mouth full. He shrugged. "Bunya said there might be changes." The little creature just gnawed away, unworried. Sarah leaned against the wall of the cave, watching him. There was something off. She could feel it. She opened her UI and tapped on Rushmore. There had been reports of type changes. Was it that? Nope. Still rock and ground. He certainly hadn't duplicated. His rarity hadn't changed either. What else was there? Height and weight? Those...looked normal. She checked his move pool, and there was nothing new. All his old moves were- "What's this?" she asked the cave, staring at one move in particular. 'SANDSTORM ::' Wasn't Sandstorm ground? Or rock or whatever? Larvitar increased from Uncommon to Rare

The side dropped off into a distant crash far below, and the updraft buffeted hair and fur in turn. It felt a little like flying, and very close to falling. "But now I know you'll catch me," Shinx said. She put one foot in front of the other, padding slowly in front of Sarah. Her star tail flicked side-to-side, keeping time and balance like a metronome. Counting down the seconds. "I have a question for you," Sarah said, her arms out wide like an acrobat as she kept balance on the concrete ledge. "If you could leave. Leave right now and go anywhere in the world. Would you?" Shinx kept walking, her tail swishing as she thought about the question. "Anywhere?" They reached the corner of the roof, and she leaned gracefully turned to the right and continued around the edge of the building. Below them, the broken and overgrown remains of the Nexus stretched out far beyond their line of sight. "Can't we go together?" "Sure we can," Sarah said, smiling as she teetered on the corner. "Let's go together." Shinx increased from Uncommon to Rare
