At first, Arthur had been planning to potentially use the Poochyena as trade fodder, but then with the acceptance of the recon mission and feeling that Buru was too spoiled to take on the mission, he needed another dog with a keen nose for the party.
So this was a trial, of sorts, to see how the Pokemon was like. When he opened the Poke Ball and let him out, he did think that he was cute, sniffing and trotting around, tail mostly held at a straight angle, seemingly cautious. When he would ask Hie a question, he would just bark in return or let a whine. Hm, he didn't talk, even with PokeSpeech on? Maybe he was young, kind of like what was going on with Mugan. Or maybe he just didn't like speaking. Buru certainly had a lot of words to say.
At least he seemed equipped to take commands easily enough. As a test, Arthur asked him to sit, lie down, and hand out his paw - all of which he knew what to do. Weird, it was almost like he was given someone's well-trained dog.
❝You'll need to expand your language teaching class to two, Gou.❞
<Haha, very funny.>
It would be three, actually, if they considered the Mantyke, but it looked like she was able to speak some kind of language, it was just all in bubbles, for some reason. Like bubble-like sounds, pop pop pop.

<What are we doing here anyway?>
Gou remembered that somewhere in this forest, they fought against something unlike anything he had ever seen. Corrupted seemed like an apt term, when he tried to explain it to his trainer, that was the word he used. It was not a new occurrence, as it turned out - there was a region choked full of these things, or well, they took on other forms over there, and he didn't really want to find out what those were (thankfully, his trainer had not expressed wanting to go there).
❝Looking for a particular Pokemon.❞
<Which one?> as if he would know.
❝A Shroomish.❞
Gou indeed did not know what that was, only that it sounded like a mushroom, so it must look like a mushroom - like all of these little things growing at the base of these tree trunks.
<How come?> their team, he felt, was actually getting quite crowded. He noted that Arthur always made sure that he was around in parties, except if he could only carry certain Pokemon, but there were others that already had to stay in their Poke Balls and within the boxes - they were getting shifted around. Well, he supposed that he couldn't really feel nostalgic about it, as they were not always all together at one point. That only happened when they set up camp in safe spaces.
❝It's related to the wish I'm gonna grant.❞
The Monferno remembered something about building a shrine. So the Shroomish could build one? That was interesting. He'd like to see a mushroom able to build something. Did it even have arms?

...huh.
On the day he didn't bring Rou, a Vulpix crossed their path. Immediately, Gou's fur stood up on end, kind of like a cat, and he entered a fighting/protective stance. He was much more prepared now compared to before, and he was not going to get knocked out so easily.
But this Vulpix was definitely different compared to the one that aggressively jumped on Arthur that long while ago (how long ago was that? A few weeks? A month?). It looked at them with a curious eye and didn't look hostile. In fact, it just sat there and licked its paw, much like a cat. The Monferno was not sure if he should drop his guard or not.
And then just as suddenly, it ran off further into the thicket.
❝Wait!❞ Arthur already had a Vulpix, but he learned not long after that it was a rare spawn, so surely someone else would want one for something good. He also broke into a light sprint, not wanting to get too close, but not wanting to lose sight of the Pokemon. Leaves crunched under his shoes and added to the ambiance. His Monferno was surprised by the sudden take off and at first followed right behind him before quickening his speed so that he was in front. He didn't want to expose his trainer to unnecessary danger if he could, but he was also interested in a rematch, even if it was not exactly the same as what he fought before.

Wait, where's Hie?
He almost tripped trying to stop his run. Gou's movement was much smoother. <What happened?>
❝Hie--❞ the Poochyena was nowhere to be seen. He had momentarily forgotten about the dog when he saw the Vulpix, and now the forest they were surrounded by looked all the same. Shit. he mentally cursed as he quickly scanned the area for any trace of black fur. ❝Gou, did you see where Hie went?❞
The Monferno looked guilty, feeling terrible that he was not paying attention. <Perhaps we can retrace our steps-->
But suddenly, the sound of steps appeared behind them, and they both turned around to find a long-haired girl carrying a basket of flowers and leaves on one hand, and a Poochyena on the other. Arthur immediately glanced above her head to see if she was a player, but she had the (NPC) tag on her. She looked too serene and peaceful for a place that they had encountered corrupted monsters in.
"Is this your lost pup?"
Hie let out a bark and wagged his tail a little when he saw them. She gently lowered her body until she could let the Poochyena's paws touch the ground, to which the dog scampered and stood nearby the Monferno. Arthur breathed a sigh of relief as Gou expressed how worried he was, carrying the pooch easily with his longer arms.
❝Thank you for bringing him to us.❞
She smiled and nodded once. "It is easy to lose one's way in this forest. You should be careful."
But she didn't leave immediately - in fact, Arthur noted that as soon as she stopped speaking, an exclamation point appeared right beside her name. She had a quest. Hm, a quick chance to return the debt? He would take it. ❝We will. May I ask though, are you looking for something here? We can help as thanks for returning my Poochyena.❞
Gou furrowed his brows, wondering why his trainer sounded all too eager to assist, but he remembered that with specific people, he always sounded like he was looking for something from them - something in turn for a deed. Was this one of those people?

"Oh! I am." she colored her words with surprise but her expression looked the same, as if expectant. Arthur was suddenly less sure about this. "I am looking for something special to finish this bouquet. It is for my partner, you see, she is ill and..." she looked away for a moment, "...I was told it might help her feel better."
Seemed pretty standard enough. Arthur played by ear. "I'm sorry to hear about your partner. What are you looking for, exactly?"
A strong gust blew between them; a trope that often signified something potentially larger than what he had originally thought of. It was a twinge ominous in a forest that looked innocent at first glance, but he liked to think that he knew better. "A petal from a Venusaur. The oldest of its kind."
A pop up sprang in front of Arthur's face, startling him slightly. The quest details are listed, but they did not say much other than what had already been mentioned. What else is this hiding? Something did catch his eye though, one that should probably bring some alarm: [Recommended Party Number: 3]
He had to recruit people for this? Damn. He wasn't exactly planning on being social today, but he supposed it was better to talk quests and Pokemon rather than clown politics and money. He pressed the ACCEPT button and then replied in kind. "Sounds interesting, where do we start looking?"

The lady walked ahead of them while Arthur, Gou, and Hie followed closely behind - the trainer making sure that his pup wouldn't wander away again. The path looked the same, both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Even if the trees had minute differences from each other, likely generated with randomized numbers to create a scenery, it was so minuscule that they couldn't be used as reliable marker unless he specifically did something to it, like put a burn mark.
"If I may ask," the NPC spoke, and Arthur was surprised she initiated conversation, "what are you doing in the forest?"
"Oh, I was looking for a Shroomish."
"Not a mushroom?" she looked amused. There were, after all, plenty of mushrooms in Birchwood. He just had to choose which of them spoke to him the most.
"I need one to grant someone's wish."
"Oh my. Not as an ingredient, hopefully."
Arthur let out a snort. "No, I need them to build something."
"Without arms?"
<That's what I thought too.> Gou piped up.
"When it evolved into a Breloom it does."
"Ah, I get it now." her smile looked a little more genuine now. She slowed her pace so that she was walking beside them. The Poochyena, on the other hand, did a bit of a trot so that he was walking beside the nice smelling lady. "What will you build?"
Arthur hadn't met such a curious and inquisitive NPC before. He wondered what she was up to. "I'm building a shrine. It's for someone's wish." he didn't want to divulge more details - for some reason he felt cagey about it. Was he embarrassed? Cautious? He wasn't really sure.
Thankfully, the lady seemed to notice this and only nodded, tucking one of her loose hair strands behind her ear. "A shrine sounds wonderful, though I wonder if this world is in need of more gods." she seemed to want to mention something else, but then let it go and continued to walk, her bare feet crunching the leaf litter she stepped on.

Eventually, they reached a clearing, which looked suspiciously manmade. The reason for that was because the path's end led to a sudden drop - a huge square-shaped hole that when Arthur dared to peer over the cliff, led to another blanket of leaves and branches. None of the trees grew tall enough to surpass the hole's height, but whatever spots he could see between the leaves was just plain dark. Who knew how deep this hole went, and the corners of the square were too clean to be fractured by the earth.
"I was told that the ancient Venusaur lives somewhere there." the lady said, one step away from falling into the hole. She was looking down, searching for something. "I cannot go there alone, so I appreciate that you asked me first."
Well, it looked like no one was recommended to go alone, Arthur thought, judging from the UI pop up that kept telling him that he should really bring a small party with him. Not just Pokemon, but other players. There was also something that felt like it was repelling him - nothing physical, but an invisible push. He supposed it would remain until he accepted the quest.
❝Right, it looks dangerous. I will need to prepare before I can head down there, if that's alright.❞
"It is understandable. I will lend you my aid."
He raised a brow, wondering if it was alright for an NPC to come with him, but that was until the lady suddenly disappeared from his sight, startling him. An illusion? Out from the bushes nearby them appeared the Vulpix they saw earlier, eyes wide and alert, knowing and wise.
<Truth be told, trainer, I cannot enter as I am. I will subject myself to you, so long as you promise me we find the leaf.>
There was an unspoken "but". Arthur had heard of Vulpix being able to cast curses. He wondered if the NPC had the ability or authority to do such a thing. He had wanted to trade this Vulpix, but it looked like she was going to lead them to treasure instead. This seemed like a lot of work, but he did accept the quest...
❝Fine, I will prepare a group and find the leaf. What comes after, we will discuss when we get there, yes?❞
The Vulpix smiled. <You are wise to think of this as a temporary truce. I accept.>
Arthur pulled out the Poke Ball and let her press her paw on the button, drawing her in, but not without a contract signed.
