Josh stepped inside the Creed's base, having talked his way past C.L.A.W.'s bouncers and into the dreary, castle-like guild hall. Mirage softly buzzed next to him... as much as a saddled Ninjask's buzzing could be soft. The insect landed in the guild master's presence as Josh approached her.
"I have done as you asked and returned after defeating Kyukon in a solo race to the top of the Tower of Worms," he reported his success, the ten Poké Balls in a carrying case in his right hand. "I have fulfilled your conditions for membership. I would like you to hold your end of the bargain and induct me under your wing."
The conniving lady stared Josh down like a queen would a prisoner. "Except you weren't the first to complete a Challenge Tower alone. I was watching your race the entire time, and you finished in second place. Who finished ahead of you?"
"Alicia Westfield . She's one of my best friends. We pushed each other to our limits, even though she wasn't supposed to even be involved." Without even saying a word, a pencil and paper icon appeared above C.L.A.W.'s head. Shortly afterward, Alicia Westfield would receive a very threatening-sounding direct message from the guildmaster herself:
DIRECT MESSAGE> I've heard great things about you, Alicia Westfield . Some pleb named Josh Devlin is in my hall right now. Says you were the first in UNOVR to complete a Challenge Tower by yourself. Consider this an official summons. It's not in your best interest to refuse. Trust me.

In hindsight… she should have seen this coming. ”Should have just butted out.””What’s up?” Tikani asked. Alicia grimaced as she finally thought to shift her purchases around to have a few Bolter Ranks before going on a Drift. ”I’ve been given an offer I can’t refuse. You know where Creed’s HQ is, right?””Oh dear…” Tikani intoned. Giving Alicia a chance to mount up, the Bayleef shook her head. And then the crackle and boom of lightning resounded. Barely a minute after the NPC DM was sent, CLAW and Josh would see the purple sparks in the distance out of any window that might be aimed in the right direction.. While the Guild Master might not know the context, the boyscout definitely would. It charged towards the guild hall, before cutting out abruptly to reveal Alicia and Tikani, the latter kicking up a dust could behind her as her four feet stamped hard into the ground in order to brake in time. As the Bayleef came to a stop at last, Alicia would bob left to right once. Then the pinkette swung her leg back over and dismounted, dusting herself off. ”Hey Josh.” Alicia called softly. Given she was directly summoned by the Guild Master herself, it was undoubtable that CLAW would make arrangements to have her admitted. Well, try to at least. An Electro Drift, even from an unusual user, was a boost of speed that few could properly account for. So there had been a bit of time where the pinkette had to wait for the orders to filter through. And then she regarded the Guild Master at last. In another scenario… perhaps this would’ve been a happy first meeting. An exciting one even. All personality traits aside, the blonde woman was beautiful. Anyone would have to admit that. But factor those in, and Alicia was on guard subtly. Tense. Ready to bolt or fight, depending on how the situation developed. Given her level of development, that could be concerning. ”I must say, I thought I’d be able to stay off your radar for a while longer, ma’am…”The hero aspirant was at least being cordial enough. ——————————————————————— {party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Rath (Growlithe) [4/4/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

The purple sparks and the sound of a roaring engine were the herald to Alicia Westfield 's arrival. That the Guildmaster had involved his best friend. "Hey, Alicia," a nervous-looking Josh waved toward her. "I'm sorry that she dragged you into this."
As C.L.A.W. cleared her throat, a sinister track would override any music settings the two had for the guildhall. "Welcome, Alicia Westfield ," the scarlet femme greeted the Gardener. "I've never seen someone rise through UNOVR's PVP ladder as quickly as you. On top of that, you have done something no one else has done before: cleared a Challenge Tower by yourself, and in under two hours at that. And don't think I don't know about your special Bayleef, either. I've had my eyes on you for a long time."
Shivering, Josh turned toward Alicia again and whispered, "She's really scary... I'm so sorry for dragging you into this..." was all he could say. All he could do was repeat himself.
The haughty and powerful Guildmaster continued, her head tilting toward the child. "Don't think I can't hear what you're saying, boy. You're involved in this, too," she barked, making Josh leap like he had been the victim of a jump scare.

Helen… was terrified. As a human in the real world Helen would honestly admit that she was terrified of the personality before her. Who was, no matter how life-like she was, a character in a game that could not reach into her home and attack her. Helen didn’t care about those details. She wanted to scream in fear, turn on her heel, and flee. It was a good thing that the woman standing before C.L.A.W. was not Helen, then. Leaning completely upon the personality she had dreamed up upon creating her avatar, Alicia stood firm before the imposing Guild Master where Helen would snap. The music change had little effect upon the pinkette as she turned to Josh a bit. ”Really, I brought this upon myself. You’ve got nothing to apologize for.”She couldn’t fault Josh for being spooked when C.L.A.W. snipped at him. Taking a step forward, she loosely crossed her arms just under her chest. ”I’m flattered, C.L.A.W.. That someone of your stature would be going to efforts to keep tabs on a drifter like myself is high praise enough. And I imagine with Tikani’s speed it’s been more of a strain on your resources than it would be for most.”Of course… there was the crux of the matter. ”But much as I’m sure we could go round and round praising one another in our own ways… Shall we cut the chit chat and skip straight to the issue? I can only think of one reason someone like you would go out of your way to call me out. And as I mentioned, I’m something of a drifter. Never feeling quite at home in any one spot. It’s why, despite having the ability to join a guild for some time now, I still remain a free agent on my own. With what I bring to the table I feel it’s not too presumptuous to claim I would be welcomed with open arms into whichever guild I deigned to approach.”Gently pacing horizontally, the pinkette hummed. ”I’m a team player when I wish to involve myself, or if it comes down to brass tacks. But the fact of the matter is that by and large I fly solo. If your intent is to offer me a spot in The Creed, I have to say that I’m fairly difficult to convince. And I’ll say up front that even if I join it is likely to be a temporary affair. Admittedly, I’ve heard of a couple Pokemon you have on offer to your members, and I’ve been considering dipping in long enough to make those trades…”Audacity was the name of the game, in her opinion. She was strong, even if she didn’t fully follow the motto of The Creed. She believed she was a force that one would do well to respect. She had no need to approach this from a position of weakness. While she certainly couldn’t overcome everything C.L.A.W. could likely sic upon her if she became cross, it’s a fight Alicia could make costly before falling. ”If I have the flexibility to continue acting in a fairly freeform matter, I may be willing to consider accepting…” Alicia finished, smiling with a soft confidence. ”And I’d want for Josh to still be able to have a spot, should he want it. If I hadn’t heard about the race from him in the first place, I would’ve never become a part of it. By that metric, his victory over Kyukon is still valid, in my humble opinion.”… Helen was screaming internally at this moment. ——————————————————————— {party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Rath (Growlithe) [4/4/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3]

The guildmaster smiled at Alicia's desire to cut the formalities and get right to business. It was part of the reason the Gardener was able to curry favor so easily with her. "You both have shown how strong you are," the scarlet woman continued. "Alicia Westfield , where you lack is focus. Build. Know-how. You've been blessed with resources my most tenured members would kill for. Plus, I need someone to replace Tuesday after their retirement. You would have the Creed's entire library at your beck and call. It contains volumes on any viable PVP build. How to build any legendary Pokémon in the game. You could be number one in the world on the ladder, with the time, effort, and our help."
C.L.A.W. turned toward Josh after giving Alicia plenty of food for thought. "There is no question that you have held up your end of the bargain. As shrewd as I am at the table, I do keep my word. Josh Devlin , I offer you unconditional membership into The Creed today. If you are to accept, we do have a code of conduct... and those who do not meet that code of conduct will be subject to... disciplinary action."
Josh swallowed when he heard those last two words. He felt like Absol was important enough to him that it was worth joining just to get the Pokémon and leave... but what did she mean by disciplinary action? If it was simple removal from the guild, that was fine. Like Alicia, he didn't care to climb the PVP ladder.
With a nod, the boy stepped forward. "Then... consider us allies. Where do I sign?"
C.L.A.W. flipped to the end of two documents, presenting both Alicia and Josh with pens. "Right here, on the X at the bottom." Shaking, he picked up the writing utensil and penned his name on the sheet... in blood-red ink.

That was not the exact start up Alicia had been expecting. And the pinkette quirked an eyebrow in surprise, asking softly, ”A moment, please.”Turning away a bit, the aspiring hero quickly accessed the publicly available list of players. At first it was only those currently online, but with a few flicks of prompts she managed to change it to ‘all time’, and found the mentioned player’s available info. While a recent patch had forced everyone to respec, the sheer number of subclasses and titles unlocked by the individual in question still told a tale of how advanced that player had been before disappearing. Nineteen classes total, counting the three everyone started with. Along with twenty titles, including one implying taking on the hardest battles and coming out the other side still standing. C.L.A.W. was seriously considering her as someone who could actually fill the shoes this person left behind? That… was almost more intimidating than the presence she held. There was just one problem… Alicia despised same old, same old. She didn’t want to follow a script. The hero stood out from the crowd because he or she did things differently. And she despised the thought of just treading the same paths as whoever else joined The Creed. Other games had words for those kinds of cookie cutter players: Meta Slaves. UNOVR… was something where that kind of thing shouldn’t exist. Where you didn’t have to chain yourself to the most direct paths. ”I’m out.” Alicia replied at last, turning her back on C.L.A.W. ”Make no mistake, I realize exactly what you’re offering. The likely hundreds if not thousands of books available. But I can guarantee you this; if I’m expected to make use of any of it to alter how I fight, then you are in fact looking at another Tuesday. In their entirety.”If C.L.A.W. needed any help understanding that she meant she’d end up retiring too, then oh well. The offer she thought too tantalizing to ignore had in fact appeared to drive away the one she was trying to entice. ”At most, I’ll pop in later to trade for a Scyther. And maybe an Axew if you still have one when I come around. But after that, consider me a ghost.”She wouldn’t fault Josh for joining. They had something he wanted badly enough to accept a challenge for. But this wasn’t for her, and she hopped astride Tikani after letting the Bayleef back out. If the Guild Master had any words for her, anything else in mind now that she was told in no uncertain terms that the freedom to build in her own path was non-negotiable, she’d hear her out. Otherwise, there would be lightning and she’d be gone. ——————————————————————— {party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Rath (Growlithe) [4/4/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3]

The look of disgust on C.L.A.W.'s face turned to resentment. "I am very disappointed in you, Alicia Westfield . You have the freedom to build how you want, as long as it is within the myriad of viable PVP builds we have spent painstaking hours documenting. That is what I ask: improve. I'm sure there is a proven build close to your current one." It was clear to Josh that the lady's terms would not be acceptable to Alicia.
Her tone turned increasingly threatening. "If you turn your back on me, do so with the understanding that next time we meet may be as enemies." It was in that moment that Josh realized he might be trapped within the guild. Alicia, the most powerful force he was friends with, could wind up locking horns with the Creed's guildmaster in the distant future. She and Josh could end up going to battle with one another... with more than just their pride on the line.

”…” Alicia was honestly shocked, sighing. ”Are you listening to yourself? That’s exactly the kind of talk that shows I’d have no freedom.”It was becoming a bit… almost surreal. ”There’s millions of roads to power. Passion and Freedom are core to mine. Every soul is a flower. Every soul is unique. Every soul has to be researched just as much as the strategies. And like a delicate flower you have to understand what you’re trying to nurture. Growth, Improvement, is an art. Not a science.”This wasn’t mainline. Battles were not nearly as turn-based here as they were on consoles. ”Here… everything is viable. Everyone has value. And from what was said here…? You sound afraid of that flexibility.. Afraid of what I could become if not yoked to things you can predict.”She sighed, giving Tikani a soft squeeze. The Bayleef nodded, melding into purple lightning. With a crackling boom, she was gone. And as she left, she wondered what C.L.A.W. would be like next time. Could such developed personalities glitch? Or had she in fact burned a bridge? The only way to know for sure if she got the real C.L.A.W. was to keep meeting her in other contexts. Because this was not a good first impression. … though if she was being fair, she was coming in biased. She had no intention of joining unless she really liked the offer she’d gotten. DIRECT MESSAGE> I’ll try to get you out of there, Josh. Somehow. That guild is going to crush you the way it would’ve crushed me.——————————————————————— {party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Rath (Growlithe) [4/4/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

The guildmaster remained silent at Alicia's final rebuttal, disappearing in a flash of purple lightning and leaving Josh alone. "She is not your friend," the scarlet one tried to argue to Josh. "Strong she is, she is just one woman. She cannot outsmart our collective knowledge of players that have each held the top spot on the ladder. With our help, you will overcome her. You will humiliate her when the next tournament comes around."
Josh was growing increasingly uncomfortable in the haughty femme's presence, not saying a word to his superior. "There's going to be a guild meeting not long after the World Event is over. It would behoove you to be there," she attempted to persuade the young boy.
Afraid of the situation he found himself in, the boy told a little white lie. "I... may have a real life conflict around that time. I'll need to log out, check my calendar, and get back to you." With that, the boy vanished without a trace, now showing as OFFLINE.
