Why did it feel like he was in the business of misery these days?
First, it was Kartana—now, he was out here looking for a Charmander of his own! Since he knew he wasn’t going to have a chance in hell to unlock that last missing ‘player subclass’ (which lots of people speculated to be the Dragon-class one, plus he wasn’t going to be specializing too much in Dragon-types) he decided to come out here to look for the closest thing he could ever get to a Dragon-type… all things aside, really.
Wait, how many Fire-types did he have already? Doing a mental count, he knew he had to at least branch out to other Pokémon types before he got overrun with just one type—he didn’t have a single Flying-type yet, so maybe Charizard would be the first one? It was a step in the correct direction!
So now he was out here, back on Beta Island, out at the Crater where he felt like home.
…no, Alkaid, you are not going to dive into the fucking lava. That’s stupid, not to mention really insane if you did that!
Anyway. He would slap some sense into his cheeks as he set out on his new ‘search’.

He was working with a reduced field of vision, though—the bandages that he’d roughly wrapped around the cut on the right side of his forehead wasn’t exactly the best; since he had to put pressure on it and all that—plus the fact that it had the tendency to randomly bleed when agitated too much.
That was a definite cause for concern, really.
Hissing complaints as quietly as he could manage without spooking whatever the hell was watching him move around clumsily, he would wander over towards a rock not too far from a lava pool.
…no, Alkaid, swimming in lava is not possible, even for maxed-out Kindlers. That’s just absolutely insane. What the hell. Intrusive thoughts, go away!
He sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. Why was he being driven to this madness, really?
“Ugh…” he groaned a few moments later. “No, stupid brain, don’t even go there.”

The first thing he would notice out of the corner of his eye was something—huh. This one didn’t look familiar; out of all the Fire-type starters that existed, this… this one had to be the one from the newest generation.
And for some strange reason, he thought he felt the shadow of a smile flash across his face. Like… like there was some… some unknown memory associated with seeing this particular Pokémon. Like it reminded him of… of someone? From far away.
(From another universe, but really, he had no idea.)
“Go on, shoo, I don’t want to upset whatever companion you have waiting for you,” he would bark quietly at the Fuecoco (not that he knew what it was called) before heading in a different direction.

Once the strange, rice cooker-looking Pokémon had left, he continued to look around the Crater. He idly wondered if dipping even a singular toe in lava was a—
No, Alkaid, that is actual lava. You are not fucking going to let the intrusive thoughts win!
There was an itch he wanted to scratch, but he had to quell these damned intrusive thoughts from bothering him because the fact of the matter is that diving into lava sounded like a really good idea right about now!
“You are not going to jump into the lava!” he hissed to himself, slapping his cheeks in the process as he shook his head. Go away, intrusive thoughts!

The next Pokémon that would come his way was one he recognized—but alas, it was not the one he was looking for. Although, this one reminded him of another—another fleeting memory.
But what memories were these?
Where were they all coming from?
The Torchic would scratch at the ground, before letting out a crooning little cry and hopping from one rock to another. What was up with that?
“You know I want you to come with me, but… I know you’ll be waiting for me. I will return,” he hummed in that uncharacteristically quiet voice he would adapt whenever he would adopt an unnaturally serious air.
“Not now, not yet.”

He would leave the hoppy little Torchic behind, hoping that they would indeed be waiting for his return. For now, though, he had to press onward in search of the one Fire-type that he knew was waiting here.
But what if he had to jump into the—
No, Alkaid, diving into lava is not going to do you any good! Why were the intrusive thoughts bothering him again?
“Ugh, ow,” he would hiss as he pressed the flat side of his palm to the bandage that rested over the fresh wound on his forehead. “Not now…”
Even if he was to ask someone, anyone to heal the wound, it would leave a permanent scar on his forehead—yet another change to his in-game appearance. But this one was not one of his own doing…

Another Fire-type would emerge from a nearby rock—unfortunately, it wasn’t the one he was looking for either. A sigh would escape him as he realized that he might be stuck here for a while before he could move on in the Tower—hopefully he didn’t have any problems down the road once he got this last move.
(Either it was that, or he was planning a trip to the Arena again… maybe he would have to push up his plans a little bit! Who knew, hopefully he didn’t have to do that.)
The Cyndaquil would stare at him, wondering if they were alright in the head, before shaking their head and scuttling away. Wait, could they read minds, or something?
He blinked as he watched the aftermath of the Cyndaquil’s departure. What was up with that?

He was sorely tempted to scrape off the dried blood on his face, however fact of the matter was that the damned thing was bleeding again, so… wouldn’t that be an exercise in futility?
“Okay, calm down. Maybe if you had a companion to talk to while looking around here, it won’t be so lonely,” he mused to himself.
(Alright, talking to oneself was fine; but doing that in front of other people may get them thinking you’re not okay in the head! Calm down!)
For once, for bloody fucking once, he would actually go against his own personal establishment—which normally involved him in some kind of angry tirade; instead he would stand still and actually take a deep breath to calm himself down.
(In another universe, this would’ve been canonically impossible, since he was a hothead no matter where he ended up; but no matter.)

Huh. What was up with the rice cooker-looking… had it come back for more?
(And for that matter, why was he reminded of that strange person who always carted one of these around, despite never having met them out here? What was up with that?)
“No,” he would shake his head lightly in the Fuecoco’s expectant direction.
“I’m sorry. Much as I want to take you along with me, I… I’m here for someone else. Maybe on another day?” he would continue in the same quiet, disconcerting voice he would adapt whenever he wanted to be serious.
(Him? Serious? Wow.)
He would watch and wait; until the Fuecoco would eventually turn tail and depart.
Sorry… he thought in the back of his mind—what were these strange memories from?

Was it some kind of déjà vu that was attacking him?
Déjà vu for memories that shouldn’t even exist? What’s going on? he thought with this confused air as he decided to move on from where he currently stood. Maybe he’d be able to find something new all the way out here.
Why was he remembering things that shouldn’t even be there in the first place? What even was happening?
“What was that about,” he mused quietly as he came to a stop after walking what felt like an indeterminate amount of time. Had he gotten lost in here?
Surely not?

Okay, maybe he’d stumbled on a rice cooker lair because this was the… this was the third one of the species he’d encountered already!
Three? In a single trip? Surely something was wrong out here.
“Oh, no,” he muttered as he saw this one wobbling and trying to approach him on stubby little legs.
“Not today!” he would breathe out, quickly turning tail and running in a random direction; going deeper into the Crater area. There was no way… no, not today!
Certainly not!
He had to put as much distance between himself and the rice cooker as much as possible. Yes, he did make a promise to come by and get one at a later date—but why did he keep encountering them?

Was he going to have to end this trip on a bust and make an unscheduled appearance at the Arena if things didn’t pan out the way they would?
(Certainly not. To be fair, he’d been in the market for a Charmander for some time too… was he going to try and get all the Fire-type starter Pokémon? Maybe? It really depended on circumstances. Then there was also the issue of box space. Then there was also the other issue of trying not to have too many companions since he didn’t want to overlap any ‘mons he’d used before in the European side with what he had planned on this side of the world, so…)
So many decisions to be made, honestly!
Okay. Or maybe he had to lower his expectations to the point that it was near impossible for him to get what he really wanted? He knew that there was some kind of ‘desire sensor’ when games were involved, especially like this one, so…
Who knew what would come smacking out of the lava next, anyway?

And indeed, the so-called ‘desire sensor’ would deliver in the most unexpected of ways.
A certain Fire-type he was looking for, would rise out of the nearby pool of lava and then shake themselves off like it was nothing…
His hands were already trembling with excitement because holy shit on a stick, here it was! Pulling out a Pokéball from his pocket, he would pop it open and unleash unholy terror—just kidding, his Quaxly would hit the ground running so hard they would skid across the rocky ground before actually crashing into the Charmander!
“…okay, that was completely out of nowhere!” he exclaimed with a sigh of relief before the duck Pokémon picked themselves up and let out a really loud ‘QUACK!’ battle cry before charging forward in a surprise close-range Liquidation attack without even—
“What did I tell you about jumping the gun so early?!” he would sigh.
Really?

The urge to pinch the bridge of his nose was there, so he would indulge and just do it because—he knew he’d already talked with the Water-type about being too overeager and how it would get them into a lot of trouble, however they weren’t having any of that shit!
“…alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!” he grumbled as the Water-type picked themselves up before the surprise Flamethrower came from the Charmader and—
Well, fire was weak to water, right?
Another loud ‘QUACK!’ would come from the duck Pokémon, before a second slamming attempt at Liquidation was attempted—and this time, hopefully sending the Charmander flying his way!
“What the—hey! Warn me when you do that!” he yelped as he saw the incoming Fire-type that had been sent flying due to the force of the attack.

He barely had enough time to dodge the hell out of ‘blast range’ the moment the Quaxly came dashing back—ready to shoot down the Charmander with a Water Gun because jumping the distance and closing it with Aqua Cutter would need some extra momentum—which the Water-type didn’t have due to the short space between the incoming ‘flying’ missile and—
“Honestly,” he grumbled as he looked over at where the Fire-type had crash-landed and saw the blur of blue and white chase after it and hose it down with aforementioned Water-type attack.
“Don’t put the fire out on their tail!” he warned the Quaxly as the flames came ridiculously close to dousing the poor Fire-type’s flames. Mentally crossing his fingers, he hoped that they would listen to him at the very least…
In the meantime, he would get ready by pulling out the golden Pokéball and popping it to full size.
